Mount Justice.
November 20, 09:48 EST.
A knock on her door distracted M'gann from the show she was watching.
"M'gann?" called Black Canary.
M'gann panicked for a moment. "Uh, just a sec," she called out, quickly shutting down her HoloBook and then shuffled over to sit on the edge of her bed, shedding her human disguise in favour of her Miss Martian form. "Uh, okay… come in."
A moment later, Black Canary opened the door and stepped into the room, her expression stern.
M'gann didn't need to read their trainer's mind to know what had put that expression on her face.
"We need to talk about your 'game' with Superboy," declared the older hero, confirming her guess.
"So now you understand that among humans, that game could be very hurtful?" Dinah queered, crossing her arms over her chest.
M'gann nodded miserably and then turned away from her, her eyes starting to prickle with tears. "I'm sorry… I'm really sorry."
Black Canary put her hand on M'gann's shoulder. "I'm not upset… anymore," she assured her, then her lips quirked up in a small smile. "But please, M'gann… from now on, just be yourself."
M'gann pushed her hand away. "This is myself!" she insisted immediately, startling the older hero. Then she crossed her arms over her chest. "This is who I am."
The PA beeped and Batman's voice echoed into the room. "Robin, Kid Flash, Superboy, Miss Martian, report for mission briefing."
Dinah turned towards it, startled, and M'gann stood quickly, following her gaze.
"If you want to talk?" Black Canary asked.
"We've got a mission," replied the Martian girl, cutting off the conversation.
10:16 EST
"Rumaan Harjavti is the democratically elected president of Qurac," Batman declared, indicating a holo-screen with the picture with a middle-aged, bearded and dark-skinned man, then another screen showing Qurac and part of one of its neighbours. Seconds later, another screen – a GBS news video showing the president shaking hands with Bruce in the Quraci capital – popped into view, partially blocking the previous screens. "Harjavti has been praised as a fair, wise leader… a humanitarian."
"Sure…" drawled Wally, then with a glance at Robin, smugly added. "… any friend of Bruce Wayne's."
"But three days ago, Harjavti allied himself with the dictator of the neighbouring nation of Bialya, Queen Bee," continued Batman as the GBS feed disappeared and the woman's picture popped up beside Harjavti's, with the holo-map expanding to show the whole of Bialya.
"Not a fan," growled Conner.
"Few are," agreed the Dark Knight. "But Harjavti suddenly backs Queen Bee's baseless claim that Qurac and Bialya were one nation in ancient times…" The map changes to show Bialya's flag over both countries with no border. "… and has announced the countries will reunify in two days at a ceremony in Qurac."
Another video feed popped into view and began to play. "After the ceremony, I will step down as President so that our rightful monarch – Queen Bee – may rule," declared Harjavti as he stood in front of a platoon of armed soldiers in the Quraci palace, with a mural of the Quraci monarch in the background.
Unhappy crowd noises echo out of the feed as the feed cut to the Bialyan Royal Palace. "I laud President Harjavti for unifying our peoples," announced Queen Bee. "And I will gladly come to Qurac to be crowned sole leader of our nation."
"And the Quracis are okay with this?" Wally asked incredulously.
"Hardly," confirmed Batman and another video popped into view showing a large group of protesters including a young boy and his pregnant mother. "They're well aware of the brutality of Queen Bee's regime. But Harjavti has censored the press…" The video shifts to another of armed riot police attacking the crowd. "… silenced all legitimate protest and invited the Bialyan military into his country to enforce martial law."
"Queen Bee has to be controlling Harjavti," stated Robin. "Doesn't she have the power to enthral most men?"
"And some women," confirmed his mentor. "But not long-distance, and we have confirmation she hasn't left Bialya."
Robin deflated a little. "
Something else is at work here," declared the Dark Knight, his eyes narrowing behind his cowl. "Find out what… Robin, you're acting team leader."
Wally's eyes widened then he smiled brightly.
It took Robin a moment to process his mentor's last comment, but when he does his own eyes go wide and his mouth drops open. "Promotion… sweet," said Wally and raised a hand in front of his best friend, clearly expected a high five.
"Me?" asked Robin nervously. "What about Aqualad?"
"Busy helping Aquaman," Batman replied bluntly. "You're the next logical choice."
"Great…" Robin sighed.
"Dude, you totally left me hanging," whined Wally.
Qurac.
November 20, 23:56 EET.
"We're right above the Quraci-Bialyan border," Robin declared as Bio-Ship dropped out of low orbit.
"A border the Bialyans are in the process of ignoring," reported Wally as he glanced out of the window next to his seat.
"No opposition," Conner noted. "Guess Harjavti really is in bed with Bialya."
Robin looked up from his holo-glove. "Wouldn't expect opposition here."
Superboy turned, his expression curious.
"It's an animal sanctuary."
M'gann leaned over to read the Boy Wonder's screen. "The Logan Animal Sanctuary?!"
Robin turned to look at her. "You've heard of it?"
"Guys, the tanks have caused a stampede," reported Wally, urgently. "With civilians in harm's way."
Conner moved next to him. "I see them," he confirmed. "A woman and a small boy."
"We have to help them!" insisted M'gann. That's Marie.
"We're way off mission here," Robin pointed out with a frown, then paused to think. "Deploy… but stealth mode."
M'gann relaxed and nodded her agreement.
"If the Bialyans know we hit them, then this becomes an international incident," Robin reminded the Team.
M'gann targeted one of the tanks and activated Bio-Ship's lasers, hitting one of the leading tanks and taking out one of the treads, causing it to crash into one of flanking vehicles. Satisfied that they weren't a threat anymore, M'gann moved past them and targeted another tank as the soldiers scattered as Robin and Wally joined the fight on the ground, taking out several.
More fire from Bio-Ship landed near the remains of the detachment, forcing them to flee over the border into Bialya.
M'gann shifted her attention back to the stampede, which was still closing in on the civilians.
(Drop me here,) said Conner and jumped down through the hole in the floor as soon as it stabilized, landing in front of the pair with a yell. He grabbed the leader of the stampede by the horns and forcing it to the ground and the remaining animals all go around the crater formed by his landing, Marie, the boy, and the injured animal.
As M'gann watched, the injured animal got to its feet and ran towards the stampede.
"Oryx!" cried the boy, but the creature ignored him and continued to run until M'gann was able to snag it telekinetically and raise it away from the group.
"Whoa…" mumbled the boy, awed.
"Are you both all right?" asked Robin as he glanced at the pair, then stood as Wally joined him and pulled off his googles.
"Mom, Mom, Mom!" cried the boy again. "We were just saved by Robin and Kid Flash!"
"Well, Superboy and Miss Martian helped too," Wally pointed out modestly as Conner moved to join them.
M'gann gently guided the creature back to the ground. An oryx? She wondered as the young boy ran up to the beast and hugged it.
"Oryx!"
Setting Bio-Ship on auto-pilot, M'gann went invisible and drifted down behind Conner and Wally.
"We diverted the Bialyans around the sanctuary," said Robin confidently. "You should be safe now."
"Yeah, coast is clear, Miss M," said Wally. "You can de-camo now."
M'gann lowered her hood, shedding her camouflage at the same time. "H-hi," she stuttered, shyly offering her hero a small smile.
The boy brightened instantly.
"You may have made things worse," said Marie sadly, crossing her arms. "Bialyan border crossings are a way of life here… usually, they wreck a few fences and move on. Engaging them might have made us a target."
"Mom!" whined the boy, clearly annoyed, a sentiment which was echoed by the animal in his arms. "Uncool."
"I'm sorry, I should thank you," said Marie with a sight as she stepped to the side and put a hand on the boy's shoulder. "This is my son, Garfield. I'm…"
"Marie Logan!" finished M'gann, unable to contain herself any longer. "I can't believe I'm actually meeting you in person!"
Conner threw her confused look, but she ignored it. "I've- uh- I've admired your stance on animal rights for years…"
(You've only been on Earth six months,) Conner pointed out.
M'gann panicked for a moment, then turning away blushing brightly.
But before he or anyone else could follow up, the wildebeest that he took down wobbled over to them, clearly in bad shape. "The oryx is sick, and I think you injured this wildebeest," declared Marie after a moment.
"Uh... Sorry?" responded Superboy, a little non-plussed.
"I suppose it was unavoidable," conceded Marie with a sigh. "But both need to go to our clinic."
M'gann moved in front of the rest of the Team, raising her heads in front her. "The boys can do that," she suggested. "You and I can, uh…fix your fences!"
"That's not exactly our…"
"Robin?" begged M'gann.
"Please, Mom?" asked Garfield.
Both sighed and let out a short 'fine' in unison.
"Yes!" exclaimed M'gann and Garfield.
06:16 EET.
Fence posts dropped into the ground one after another in a line leading up to Marie's truck.
M'gann stood with her feet braced wide and her arms outstretched next to Marie's truck and physically lifted fence posts out of the bed, then dropped them into ground where Marie indicated starting at the furthest point and moving back towards the pair. Once they were all in place, M'gann turned her focus towards a reel of barbed-wire mounted in the truck bed and played it out, sending them towards the implanted posts and wrapped them securely around them.
"Well, you're certainly a time-saver," Marie mused.
M'gann released the wire and moved out of her crouch, smiling proudly.
"How was it being Megan?" M'gann asked curiously as Marie routed through her tool bag.
"Being Megan?" echoed Marie as she pulled a pair of wire cutters out of her bag and moved to cut the wire off the reel. "I don't know. I was young… it was fun."
M'gann tucked her hair behind her ear. "Remember that time you were supposed to make cookies," she said quickly. "… only you thought it'd be faster to make one giant cookie…"
"Listen, Hello, Megan! was a job," replied Marie, curtly. "The person you saw on television isn't who I am."
M'gann's heart dropped and she lapsed into silence, until she heard a noise in the distance. "What is it?"
Before Marie could reply, the noise got closer and M'gann was able to locate the three drones that were bearing down on the facility.
Almost as if they knew that they'd been spotted, the drones opened fire on the pair.
M'gann turned toward Marie and took her down to the ground seconds before Conner reached them, shielding both from the gunfire.
When the drone climbed away and out of the sight, the pair stood up and Marie looked at Conner, panic clear on her face. "Where's my son?!"
"I ordered him to stay inside," Robin assured her as he joined them.
"He's eight, he doesn't do orders!" snapped Marie.
Before the Boy Wonder could reply, a noise from the barn drew their attention that way.
"Mom!" yelled Garfield as he threw open the doors of the barn from the inside and lead the two injured animals out. "It's okay, I got the animals out!"
Seconds later, the drones returned, kicking up dirt as their gunfire traced harmlessly across the ground before hitting a large fuel tank and detonating it, sending Garfield flying.
"Garfield!" screamed Marie. She tried to move to him, but she was held back by Conner as M'gann took off and intercepted the boy before he hit the ground, then drifted back down, handing the bruised, battered and incoherent boy over to his mother before turning her attention back to the drones, trashing two as Conner neutralised the third.
The couple said on watch for a few moments in case another flight of drones turned up, then followed the rest of the group inside, following an obvious blood trail towards the back of the house.
As they approached the room, Marie's voice filtered in the corridor. "He's in shock, he needs a blood transfusion now. Is either of you O negative?"
Robin's voice replied with a no after a moment, and Wally echoed the same after a breath.
"Neither am I," griped Marie. "It's the hardest to match, I kept a supply in the clinic…"
"I can run him to the nearest hospital," claimed Wally as he moved out of the corridor into the bedroom.
"The nearest hospital with a blood supply is half an hour away at your top speed," countered Robin. "Longer by Bio-Ship."
"He doesn't have that much time!" cried Marie, a hint of hysteria in her voice. "What's Superboy's blood type?"
"He's Kryptonian," replied Robin angrily as M'gann and Conner reached the door. "And Miss Martian…"
"Might be able to help," finished M'gann.
This got pretty much everyone's attention instantly.
"My shape-shifting occurs at the cellular level," she explained as she walked into the room. "I think I can morph my blood to match his."
"Please try," begged Marie, reaching out and griping M'gann's arm tightly as she came within arms' length.
M'gann raised her other hand to her head as Marie released her. "I'll need to concentrate," she said, then glanced over her shoulder at Marie. "No distractions."
Marie nodded and turned to the boys. "Out… all of you, out!"
Once all of the boys were out of the room, Marie crossed to the door and slammed it shut, then glanced back at M'gann, worry clear on her face.
M'gann's eyes began to glow green as she reached for Garfield, wiping some of the blood falling from Garfield's nose with her glove, then staring at it until her eyes shifted to red. "I'm ready."
16:32 EET.
"It's done," reported M'gann as she rejoined the boys in the house's living room. "All we can do now is wait."
Wally was fumbling with a remote, and accidentally activated it.
"My fellow Quracis…" said a familiar male voice from the set.
M'gann perked up. "Is that Harjavti?"
"… Queen Bee's rule is a gift to Qurac."
"Hey, that guy in the back in the hoody…" interrupted Superboy, suddenly. "I know him."
Robin activated his holo-glove, captured a screenshot and enhanced it.
M'gann recognised the man now as well. "It's Psimon… the psychic we fought last time we were in Bialya," she confirmed. "He was working for Queen Bee then; he must be controlling Harjavti for her now."
Wally facepalmed and groaned. "I remember the headache from when he brain-blasted us."
"We have to get Harjavti away from him," insisted Robin, eyes narrowing.
The door behind them squeaked as it opened again. The Team turned to face Marie. "I think it worked," she reported. "Garfield's stable."
"Good," said Robin. "Because we have our mission."
Dhabar.
November 21, 22:11 EET.
(Harjavti's alone,) declared Robin, then the boys dropped into the dimly-lit room. Robin headed towards the president, who sat silently at his desk, while Conner and Wally moved to stand guard at the exits.
"Where's my daughter?" asked the president dully as Robin moved into his sight-line, clearly still strongly under Psimon's mind control. He groaned, moving for the first time as he brought his fingers to the bridge of his nose. "Where's Psimon?"
"Forget him," countered Robin, shortly. "Let's get you out of here."
But before the older man could act, both doors burst open and an entire squad of Bialyan soldiers decked out in full-body alien weapons poured into the room and encircled the Team and President Harjavti. Then a Bialyan officer strode in, unlike his soldiers, he carried no obvious weapon. "Well, well, American heroes… here to assassinate the President."
Miss Martian engaged her camouflage and dropped into the room and snuck around the general.
"… such a shame we arrived too late to stop them."
(Those are Apokoliptian weapons,) Superboy told his team-mates tersely.
(Which they'll use to kill Harjavti, so we get blamed and Queen Bee gets to rule Qurac,) concluded Robin. (Form up around the President.)
(I've found Psimon!) said M'gann as she sensed a familiar mind elsewhere in the building.
(Wait!) insisted Robin, but she ignored him and flew off.
M'gann flew invisibly and silently through the palace until she came to an auditorium and landed with only a slight click of her boots between two rows of seats, but always immediately she was hit with a brutal psychic wave that knocked her across the room into the stairs at the back of the room.
As she returned to visibility, she looked up and saw Psimon walking out onto the stage. (Tsk, tsk… am I the only one to learn anything from our previous encounter?) he taunted, then headed up the aisle towards her. (You didn't think that maybe if you could sense me, I could sense you too?)
M'gann struggled onto her knees, furious and defensive but didn't give in to his taunts.
(Or that this time, I'd be ready to use your greatest fear against you? Psimon says: Show me who – or rather what – you really are!) he demanded as he dropped hood and exposed his clear skull, unleashing an even more powerful physic wave.
M'gann gasped and clutched her head, her eyes bulging in fear. (No, no, no…!) she screamed as the pain drove her onto her elbows. "This is who I am!"
But mere words weren't enough to deny Psimon's power and within seconds she was back in her hated hunch-backed, chalk-white A'ashen form. Racked in pain, both physical and mental, M'gann wasn't reassured by Conner's message that they were on their way and lashed out them, knocking them out.
(Psimon says smartly done,) said the mercenary, clapping sarcastically. (Brain-blasting your own team… I had no idea you'd go to such lengths to hide your true self from your good friends. Well, actually, I did. But you needn't have bothered, it's being recorded for posterity.)
(No!) M'gann shouted as she followed his gaze to a bank of security camera feeds, then sent her own psychic waves at Psimon.
The mercenary blocked them with ease. (Ah, ah, ah…) taunted Psimon and waggled a finger at her. (I didn't say 'Psimon says'…)
When M'gann regained consciousness, she found herself back in her Miss Martian form, lying in the Bialyan desert. With a little effort she managed to raise herself onto her knees and then stagger to her feet and start walking.
But a moment later, Psimon was back. (Come now, we both know that's not who you really are,) he insisted. (Must you even lie to yourself within your own mind?)
(It's not a lie… this is who I am,) M'gann cried, then she struck out at the mercenary.
But Psimon easily raised a black shield to block her psychic blast, (Wow… and they say I'm pathological,) mused Psimon.
M'gann shot another brain-blast at him, but this time he turned it around on her, sending her flying, images of her past littering the sky and ground around her.
(Off our game, aren't we?) sneered Psimon as he flew towards her. (Let's dig a little deeper… find out what you're really afraid of… hm?)
M'gann screamed as a black wave burst from the man and enveloped her, turning her back into her birth shape.
For a moment, there was only endless darkness but then her friends… the Team and Zatanna – appeared. But they weren't friendly now… now they were staring at her in fear and distrust. "Keep back!" Wally shouted as Artemis gasped and shrank away from her.
(Well, of course, friends and teammates shrink from you in fear.)
In a red flash, larger-than-life versions of Black Canary, Batman, and Red Tornado appear and stare down at her.
"You should have told us the truth!" snarled Canary.
"I don't see how we can trust you now," said Batman.
"Then you're kicked off the pep squad."
The three turned around and walk away, not seeing M'gann attempt to reach for them.
An oversized version of her uncle came into view. (I am sorry, M'gann…) he began. (…but there is no place for you on Earth now.)
Before she could try and argue her case, he disintegrated away into nothing and she was back in the desert again.
(Oh and banished to Mars too,) continued Psimon as she was enveloped in his darkness again. (Yet even that's not the worst, is it?)
"No, please… stop," M'gann begged, breathlessly as Conner appeared out of the darkness, as he turned in her direction he has bathed in red light.
"Love you?" he asked darkly. "I can't even look at you."
M'gann fell to her knees crying as Conner faded out of existence.
For a tense second, M'gann was alone, but then Psimon joined her. (Oh, what you wouldn't do to prevent that now, right?)
M'gann perked up. (That's right.) she agreed and she started to rise to her feet as the world around began to shake.
Psimon puts on a tense smile but looked worried. (Now, now, my pretty… I know you don't want to do anything you'll regret…)
M'gann's eyes began to glow red. (You don't know me at all!) she declared and a massive beam of psychic energy burst from her and struck the mercenary in the chest.
A stunned lock crossed the man's face as the blast expanded, tearing his clothes as it enveloped him.
Dhabar.
09:16 EET.
"What do you mean the President won't see me?" Queen Bee demanded as she stood on the steps of the Democratic Palace, flanked by journalists, photographers and Bialyan military forces. "He invited me!"
"Not of my free will… no!" shouted Harjavti from an archway above her. "But now that I am free of your minion's thrall… the Quraci people will never suffer your tyrannical rule!"
"Mark me, Harjavti, you will suffer for this," snarled the Queen. "Qurac will be mine."
President Harjavti didn't reply as the dictator spun on her heel and stalked away.
Presidential Office.
09:24 EET.
The Team turned M'gann's way as she stepped into the office and shed her 'Queen Bee' disguise.
"Sorry you had to lie to everyone like that," apologised Robin before anyone else can say anything. "But I couldn't think of any other way to convince the public Queen Bee was behind this."
Wally fist-bumped Robin's shoulder. "Dude, you saved a country. Pretty big win for your first turn as leader."
"Yeah, thanks," said Robin unconvincingly.
If you knew all the lies that I've told you… told you all… You'd want nothing to do with me, thought M'gann sadly. I couldn't bear that…
Marie Logan Sanctuary.
16:16 EET.
"And I assure you, the Wayne Foundation is here to do whatever it can to help you and your people rebuild Qurac," announced Bruce Wayne as he stood in front of the Democratic Palace, shaking hands with the reinstated president.
"Gee… Bruce Wayne sure got here fast," snarked Wally. "Almost like he knew…"
Robin elbowed him in the stomach. "Don't you have a 'souvenir' to collect or something?" asked Robin, leaning back in his chair with a smirk.
"Hello, Megan!" said Wally, then zipped over to the television cabinet, removed a certain video cassette and ran over to M'gann to show it to her. "Something you'd like to tell us?"
It was labelled 'Hello Megan Pilot'.
M'gann scanned the group, then sighed. "Growing up on Mars was not a happy time for me," she admitted in a hushed tone. "I started watching the broadcasts my uncle sent from Earth to teach us about our sister planet and when I saw Hello, Megan! something just clicked. Maybe it was the similarities in our names. Maybe it was the way all Megan's problems could be solved in twenty-two minutes. All I know for sure is that Megan helped me smile through a lonely childhood." She paused for a moment, then turned her gaze towards Marie. "So, when I came to Earth and had to adopt a human form, I chose you."
Marie gave her a small smile of understanding.
"Well… uh, Megan."
"Which begs the question," began Robin slowly, exchanging a look Wally who returned to his side while she was talking, then leaned forward on his thighs. "… what do you really look like?"
Can I risk it…? M'gann thought as she stood slowly. No, I couldn't bear it if… But I've got to give them something… She pulled her hair into her scalp and extended her brow-ridge out so that she looked like a shorter, female version of her uncle. They should believe this. I hope…
"Bald M'gann…" said Wally, then dropped his voice. "Still hot."
Conner stood up and strode over to her, taking her hands in his own and guiding her around to face him. "You know you don't have to put on a mask for me."
Could he…? M'gann wondered, hopeful for a second before her fears kicked and she broke away, hugging herself as her hair returned. "I do it for me… this is who I am inside," she insisted, then she turned to Marie. "Please don't be mad."
"Mad? I'm honoured." Marie assured her. "M'gann, you saved my son. He says he's your blood brother now, and I agree. You're family."
M'gann quickly crossed the room and threw herself into the woman's arms. "Thank you," she whispered. "You can't know what that means to me."
