(A/N: I do not own Paw Patrol, enjoy!)
Roller Derby
Marshall and Cinder were enjoying an early morning jog around the fire station. Surprisingly, they had not gotten any calls after midnight the night before and were putting the six hours of sleep that they had gotten to good use. Neither was a big fan of lifting the heaviest object they could find and moving it from point A to B. While running around the block was a little mind numbing, that was exactly what the two Dalmatians were trying to take advantage of. While they had only been back together for a few days, they could feel their neural link starting to reestablish itself. At the moment, they could only feel each other's general presence and mood; the twins were hoping to speed along the process. They had never been able to do that before and it usually took most of a month for the link to be fully established. Since they only had a month, Marshall and Cinder had plenty of reasons to want to establish the link sooner, including wanted to play better practical jokes on the rest of the crews. Having two nearly identical Dalmatians was a veritable gold mine of opportunity. Marshall hadn't been able to pull that many with Axel because they were very clearly different pups. But with Cinder, the possibilities were endless. The two pups had almost driven their parents crazy a time or two with their pranks and had since learned when to knock it off; but to get to that point, they had to start! The twins were hoping that by doing mind numbing activities together, that their brains would naturally establish the link faster. It wasn't a particularly good theory, but absent any others, they were giving it a try. Cinder, as the fire captain, was carrying a radio for the two of them in case a call came in.
As the two pups finished their run, the stopped to drink at the pup water fountain out in front of the station. "Feel anything sis?" Marshall asked as Cinder lapped at the water.
"No" Cinder softly replied between drinks, "you?"
"I might have felt an inkling, almost as if you were too far away for me to hear you" Marshall replied, "but only once or twice."
"We'll just have to keep after it then" Cinder softly decreed, "Maybe we need to be more tired so are brains aren't thinking about it."
"Maybe" Marshall said as Cinder yielding the water fountain to him to drink from. When Marshall finished drinking, the siblings stretched out so as to not get cramps later in the day before heading inside for breakfast.
Inside, they met LT Ken, Allison, Juan, Mike, Kevin, Sadie and Axel from the morning shift. "You two get a good run in?" Sadie asked.
"Uh huh" Marshall replied, "nothing too crazy though."
"See anything heavy that needed lifting?" Axel asked hopefully.
"Only that big boulder that sits on the corner" Cinder softly replied with a smile.
"Oh, darn" Axel replied sadly. The boulder in question was about the size of Engine 25's cab and likely weighed around 20 tons.
"Ready for breakfast?" Allison asked the assembled crew.
"Yes please!" came a chorus from people and pups alike. Soon, the pups where chowing down on their breakfast while the humans were enjoying bowls of cereal. Marshall and Cinder liked how the morning shift always ate breakfast together. It was a great opportunity for them to just chat with each other about things other than work. They finished just in time; as Juan was doing the dishes and Kevin was putting the bowls away, the station alarm went off.
"WE HAVE A REPORT OF A MULTI-VEHICLE CRASH ON THE FREEWAY RUNNING THROUGH DOWNTOWN. CLOSEST ENTRANCE IS OFF OF BROADWAY, PATROL HAS A UNIT AT THE ENTRACE WAITING TO ESCORT, ALL UNITS RESPOND CODE 3."
In less than two minutes, the crew was loaded up and driving to the scene, sirens blaring. As Engine 25 approached the indicated on-ramp, Allison could see the police car waiting for them. Once they were a little closer, the patrol car pulled out to stop traffic and then led Engine 25 and Medic 25 up the onramp on the shoulder. Once they could see the freeway, Allison was glad that they had an escort. Traffic was stopped almost cold. It would have been nearly impossible for Allison to negotiate the big fire truck through traffic. While they could drive on the shoulder on their own, it was always easier with patrol unit out front to get people to move over and give them as much a space as possible.
As they approached the scene, they could see there was a police SUV already blocking the traffic lanes to give them space to work. As the patrol car pulled off behind the SUV, Allison brought Engine 25 next to the wrecked cars at an angle to block the lanes further. One car looked like it had rolled a few times before coming to rest right side up. The remaining two cars looked as if one had T-Boned the other into the concrete barrier that kept vehicles from falling off of the freeway. "Medics, get your initial assessments in while we break out the rescue gear. Sadie, grab the foam extinguisher just in case, it looks like we have fuel leaking from the T-boned car" Cinder directed and her team got to work as soon as the trucks stopped moving.
Marshall, Mike, and Kevin each headed to a vehicle to assess the driver and any passengers. Marshall went to the vehicle that appeared to have rolled over. While it was resting on its wheels, the roof had been dented inward and the windshield and windows broken in multiple places. Marshall could see that the driver was bleeding from his head and he did not appear to be moving. Marshall tried the door but it was stuck. Checking to make sure the vehicle was not leaking gasoline; Marshall spied a hole in the windshield on the passenger side that was almost big enough for him to get through. "Ruff, Glass Breaker!" Marshall barked and his rescue knife popped out of his back before flipping end for end so that the glass braking tool was facing forward. Marshall carefully used the tool to enlarge the hole so that he could safely crawl inside the wrecked vehicle. Once inside, Marshall used his paw to carefully sweep the broken glass onto the floor of the car so he didn't have to worry about accidentally cutting himself. "Hi there, my name is Marshall and I'm a paramedic; I'm here to help you" Marshall said to the man as he worked his way over the center console so he could see his patient. Receiving no response, Marshall quickly checked for breathing and a pulse. The driver had both but he was definitely unconscious. Marshall checked for other injuries and found only cuts and abrasions. The blood on the driver's head was from a shallow cut on his forehead, probably from broken glass. Seeing that the patient was not in immediate danger, Marshall slowly made his way backwards into the passenger seat before starting to crawl back out the window of the car.
As Marshall's head emerged from the broken windshield, he was greeted by Mike and Kevin. The three paramedics started their triage meeting. "Ok," Marshall began, "I have one adult male unconscious but stable breathing and pulse, minor cuts and abrasions."
"One adult male, ambulatory, minor cuts and abrasions" Mike reported.
"One adult male, conscious but trapped, possible broken legs, no indication of spinal injury" Kevin finished.
"Got it," Marshall replied as he sorted the patients in his head. "Unconscious is #1, trapped #2 and ambulatory #3." Receiving nods of agreement from the other two, he continued, "We'll get the crew on removing the roof of this vehicle first. Kevin, stay with patient 2 and monitor for signs of deteriorating condition. Mike, stay with patient 3 and monitor for shock, if he is still good by the time we get the roof off, hand over to patrol to monitor until we can get a BLS transport. I'm going to request an ALS transport for patients 1 & 2." As the paramedics went off on their assignments, Marshall yelled "CINDER!"
Hearing Marshall calling her, Cinder ran over to the vehicle.
"This one first," Marshall said without preamble, "going to need to get him out on a short spine board so probably taking the roof off would be fastest. I'll also need some heavy blankets inside the vehicle to protect him from any debris. Triage level 2."
Cinder waved the Engine 25 crew over as Marshall continued, "Next will be the man trapped in the T-boned car, triage level 3. Third patient is ambulatory, triage level 5. We will need one ALS and one BLS transport for a total of two transports. We'll take patient 1 in Medic 25 as soon as we have him out of the vehicle."
"Sounds like a plan" Cinder replied. As Marshall slid himself back into the car, Cinder gave directions to her team, "Allison, chock the vehicle so it won't move. Juan, start with the jaws on the driver's side rear corner and work counter-clockwise. Sadie, get two fire blankets from the truck that Marshall can use to protect the patient. Axel, make sure the glass is detached and then get ready to do some heavy lifting."
As her team went to work, Cinder hopped on the radio, "Dispatch, Light Force 25, on scene assessment complete, three patients, triage levels 2, 3 and 5, request one ALS and one BLS transport, request technical send three flatbeds and a crew to clean up some spilled fuel, check-in on scene."
"Dispatch copies, will advise ETAs once known."
As Cinder returned to oversee the rescue, Juan had already cut through all of the supports holding the roof of the car on except the two closest to the driver. Marshall had laid one of the fire blankets that Sadie had brought over the drive to cover him from the neck down. Marshall was positioned on the seat behind the driver, with paws on both sides of his neck and head to keep him steady. Allison and Sadie were holding the roof of the car up and in place while Axel got into position on the front corner. Once Axel was supporting the weight of the roof, Marshall pulled the second blanket over the driver's head and neck and then over his own to protect both of them while Juan made the final cuts. Marshall also pressed his back up against the roof of the car so that it wouldn't fall down on top of him or the driver. Juan got to work with the Jaws of Life making the last two cuts. Once the last cut was made, Juan put down the Jaws of Life and joined the other three in lifting the roof. Juan and Axel swapped, with Juan taking the front corner and Axel shifted to the back corner, opposite Sadie. The two pups supported the weight of the roof while Juan and Allison guided it back. Once it was clear of the patient, the two firefighters and two fire pups flipped the roof fully back so it would be out of their way.
Axel tapped Marshall on the shoulder to let him know that the roof was clear. Allison grabbed the short spine board and Juan got to work prying the door open. Once there was enough space, Juan inserted a pry bar into the door and then he and Axel used all their strength to pry the door open enough so that they could get the patient free. Then, while Marshall guided Allison in placing the short spine board between the patient and the seat, Sadie stuck her head down by the patient's legs to ensure that they were not caught and there were no obstructions. Once the short spine board was in place, Marshall carefully strapped the driver into position, making sure that his spine stayed aligned. Meanwhile, Juan had cleared away all the rescue tools and brought over the stretcher so that they could transfer the patient to the stretcher as soon as he was extracted. Once everything was ready, Juan and Allison took up positions on either side of the driver's head while Sadie and Axel took up positions near his torso. LT Ken stood behind Axel, ready to move the driver's feet once they were free of the vehicle. At Marshall's count, the team slowly lifted the driver by the short spine board and guided him clear of the vehicle. Allison and Sadie had the harder time as they were on the vehicle side and had to work their way across without dropping him. As soon as the driver was clear, the crew slowly lowered him onto the stretcher before moving the stretcher away from the car to give Marshall enough space to work. Marshall unstrapped the driver from the short spine board before having Juan and Allison lift him up and slowly remove the spine board from between the patient and the stretcher. With the short spine board removed, Marshall situated the patient so his spine was realigned in the stretcher before strapping him down. Marshall checked the driver one last time before clearing the crew to load him into the ambulance. Marshall went and relived Kevin, who had been with patient 2, so that Kevin and Mike could take patient 1 to the hospital.
Meanwhile, since none of the technical trucks had arrived yet, Cinder had the police officers reposition the patrol SUV behind the car that had T-boned the other. Attaching the winch, the police officers slowly dragged the car back far enough to give the firefighters space to work. Juan used the Jaws of Life to cut the door of the car off at its hinges since it was fully jammed into the frame of the car. Once the door was off, Juan placed a hydraulic ram between the back of the door frame and the section of the engine compartment that had been crushed in. Sadie stuck her head in to guide Juan with paw signals as he extended the ram and ensure that nothing got caught and that they didn't accidentally injure the driver. Simultaneously, Marshall hopped up in the passenger seat and was keeping the patient calm while he gave him a more thorough examination now that more space was opening up. "Ok bud, the good news is that you don't appear to have any significant internal bleeding, just a lot of bruising which is to be expected. However, you definitely have broken your right leg just below the knee and it appears that you left knee is shattered. We will get out of here soon and to the hospital as fast as we can."
The man groaned out an acknowledgement. Marshall heard new sirens approaching and saw the two requested ambulances pull up. The BLS ambulance took the ambulatory patient away while the ALS ambulance crew grabbed their stretcher and brought it over to be ready once the fire team had the last patient out. "That's good Juan!" Marshall heard Sadie tell the fire engineer who then retracted the ram so that they could remove it.
"Ok team, same lift positions as last time" Marshall directed and the fire pups and firefighters got into position. "Since we have good indications that the spinal cord is intact, we'll just lift him straight onto the stretcher. Sadie, Axel, focus on guiding the legs and feet safely out. With the broken bones we will have to be extra careful. I'm going to put a quick splint on the right calf and wrap the knee to keep them as stable as possible while we lift." Now that he had room to work, Marshall carefully applied the splint and then the knee wrap. While neither fully immobilized the injury, it would be enough to protect them while they lifted the patient. At Marshall's direction, they ever so carefully lifted the man out of the car and onto the waiting stretcher. "Ok guys," Marshall addressed the other paramedics, "go ahead and put a rigid split on the right calf to fully immobilize it. Don't touch the joint though as that will require surgical repair and we don't want to make it worse by putting excess pressure on the broken joint."
The two paramedics concurred with Marshall's plan and got to work as soon as they had the patient loaded. Moments later, they were on their way to the hospital. Marshall walked back to the fire truck and grabbed a bottle of water. He didn't realize how thirsty he was until he started drinking and had gulped down the whole bottle in less than a minute. Grabbing another water bottle, Marshall hopped up on the roof of engine 25 to see if he could see the technical trucks. As he scanned the traffic jam, Marshall only saw one set of the flashing yellow lights that the technical trucks used. As he hopped down, Cinder was waiting for him.
"See them yet?" Cinder softly asked.
"Just one" Marshall replied, "Most likely the fuel cleanup team."
"Great," Cinder replied with a snort, "And here I was hoping that we would be leaving soon."
"With this traffic, we'll be lucky if they get here in the next hour" Marshall said.
"I can still hope right?" Cinder softly pouted. She would never pout to any of their teammates, but her twin was a different story.
"Yeah, sure, in your dreams maybe" Marshall replied with a laugh.
"Dispatch, Engine 25" Cinder said into her radio while giving Marshall a dirty look, "patients transported, remaining on see until technical takes over, available for emergency."
"Roger Engine 25, technical reports that spill cleanup team should be on scene in the next 10 minutes, however, the flats will be one and a half to two hours. You are clear to return to station once cleanup is complete and technical declares that the scene is safe."
"Engine 25 copies" Cinder acknowledged while glaring at Marshall who was sticking his tongue out at her.
