Heliotropes

Eternal devotion.

"Luffy," whimpered Nami. "Help me."

Without a word, Luffy dropped his hat onto Nami's head, and turned to walk away from her. Only a few steps away, he paused and threw his hands into the air.

"OF COURSE I WILL!"

With tears streaming down her cheeks, Nami watched Luffy retreat towards the rest of the crew. "L-Luffy…"

"Let's go," he told them.

"Yeah!" they chorused in response, but Terra's attention was still focused towards the crying redhead. As the rest of the Straw Hat Pirates headed towards Arlong Park, Terra approached the navigator.

Terra crouched down in front of Nami with what she hoped was a reassuring smile. She reached for Nami's hand, which the woman gave with little resistance. Gently, she turned Nami's hand palm-up.

"I'm glad you asked for help," she said as small green leaves began to sprout from the middle of Nami's palm, quickly blooming into vibrant purple petals. Nami gasped as the blossoms grew so large that the flowers spilled over their joined hands, clusters of flowers and leaves cascading around them and growing into large shrubs despite the rocky terrain below.

"Terra," whispered Nami, her watering eyes on the garden blooming over their laps. She was so distracted that she hardly noticed the vines creeping up towards her wounded shoulder. "What is this?"

Terra smiled as she plucked a flower with her free hand, and she softly replied, "They're my eternal devotion. I know we don't know each other very well yet, but we're nakama now. You should always ask me for help, okay? For you, there's no charge."

Nami laughed, the sound gentle and tinged with a sadness that no bouquet could erase in one day. "I'm going to hold you to that."

With a grin, Terra tucked the flower behind Nami's ear. "I hope that you do. Now, let's take care of that arm of yours..."

...

Gentle waves crashed alongside them as Brook hummed along to the ocean's song. Her chin rested against her knee, pulled tight to her chest and kept there by skinny arms wrapped in bandages. Beside her, Brook's long legs dangled over the edge of the deck.

"Brook," she spoke. The skeleton's humming stopped, and two wide empty sockets turned towards her. "Your old crew— you must miss them."

"They were the greatest friends I have known," he solemnly expressed.

She nodded, her jaw digging against her knee. "They've been gone for a long time now…" she paused to gather her words. Her eyes were locked onto the endless waters around them. "Do you think that it ever gets easier, missing people?"

"I believe that it does," Brook responded. "I will always miss them, but I'm very glad to have made new friends."

"I'm glad too," she said, a small smile on her face. "Don't tell the others this, but I always thought that Luffy was right. We really needed a musician."

"Yohoho!" he laughed. "That makes me glad to hear! Your secret is safe with me, Miss Terra!"

"Are you any good at keeping secrets?"

Brook chuckled, and she saw him shrug from the corner of her eye. "It has been a long time since I have been entrusted with a secret— but any secret of yours, Miss Terra, I would guard with my life. Although I'm already dead, yohohoho!"

Terra's lips twitched, her smile growing. "There's no need to go quite that far. It's not that serious, I just haven't told the others."

Lifting her head from her knee, she extended a hand past the banister and allowed a cluster of purple flowers to grow within her palm. "The Straw Hats aren't my first crew," she admitted to the air between them, her eyes distant as her flowers fluttered the waves below.

"What happened?" he asked.

"I did," she said. "I left them behind. I'm not even sure if they're still alive. I hope that they are."

"You must have had your reasons for leaving, Miss Terra," said Brook, his voice gentle.

With a nod, Terra pulled her fist back to her chest and considered the small flowers that rested within her palm. "My first captain gave me these flowers when he asked me to join his crew. They're called heliotropes, and they're from the island we met on," she explained softly. "He told me they represented his eternal devotion. He was a big flirt like that, but it was comforting all the same." Terra laughed lightly, lost in her memories.

With a shake of her head, she continued, "I wasn't with them for very long after eating my devil fruit. I had a lot of trouble controlling it. The next thing I know, I'm being accosted by our dummy of a captain, and I'm a pirate all over again," despite her words, her voice was fond. "Sometimes I wonder what my friends would think, if we could meet again on the seas again one day. I wonder if they would be upset to see me with a new crew."

A skeletal hand pressed against her own. "I am sure they would be happy to see you happy and unharmed. You are— happy, aren't you, Miss Terra?"

"I am. I don't regret my choices," she said confidently. "I love being a Straw Hat. I would never leave you guys— I doubt anyone would let me, anyway. Zoro might actually kill me first."

If he had lips, Terra knew that Brook would be smiling. "I never thought that I would get the chance to step into the sun with my friends again. But I'm glad to be a Straw Hat, and I believe that my old friends would be glad for it as well."

Terra turned her hand over to clasp Brook's in return, and offered him the heliotrope. "There was a song that I used to sing with them," she said. "It would make me happy to sing it with my crew again. Would you sing it with me?"

Brook plucked the flower from her hand, and tucked it behind her ear. "Miss Terra, I would be most honoured."

They looked out towards the sea, and now it was Terra who began to hum.

"Yo hohoho, yo hohoho…" she sang, knowing the tune would be familiar to the old skeleton. They had sang it before, after all. He joined without skipping a beat, their low voices joining each other and disappearing over the waves.

"Gather up all of the crew, it's time to ship out Binks' Brew. Sea wind blows, to where, who knows? The waves will be our guide…"
