Chapter 10
Piper Slammed the front door as Preston quickly retreated from the door step and then called out. "Blue, I'm sorry can we talk please?" when she didnt recieve an answer Piper moved down the hallway towards Nora's room and lightly knocked on the door. "I'm mad at you Piper so make it short." Nora said a bit vehemently. "Blue I'm sorry i tried to speak for you back there, I just thought you might want to take a few days to you know get past the events of yesterday was all." The door to the room slowly opened and revealed a sobbing hot mess that was Nora. "Oh Blue come here" Piper said as she stepped forward to hold her close. Piper held Nora close to her chest as she sobbed softly, "I'm sorry Piper I didn't mean to yell at you and I Know you were only looking out for me." "Blue it's ok, I know you are still upset about yesterday and I don't blame you, But it wasn't your fault that Dogmeat died." At the mention of Dogmeat Nora began sobbing again harder than before and fell to her knees crying uncontrollably. Piper felt her heart break clean in two as she watched her new lover and best friend on the floor curled into a ball as she cried and knew the tears weren't just for Dogmeat, but for her late Husband as well.
Piper sat down next to Nora and slowly rubbed her shoulders while trying to calm her down, and after a few minutes was able to help her to her feet again. "Thank you for being here Piper, I dont know what i would do if you weren't here right now." "Think nothing of it Blue, there's no place id rather be right now than by your side anyway, but I suppose i owe Preston an apology for how I reacted earlier tho so I will be back in about a half an hour." After Piper left Nora decided that a shower would be a helpful thing in her current mood, and realised that Piper was correct, that going after a group of Super Mutants would'nt be the best plan right now. She decided to delegate the task to Ronnie Shaws group at the Castle.
By the time her shower was done Piper had returned with Preston, "General, I want to apologise for earlier, I wasnt thinking when i asked you to go to Ten Pines to deal with some Mutants." "It's ok Preston, I wasn't really thinking straight either, and let my emotions get the better of me." "Any way General I have to ask if you've given any thought to the task at hand?" Nora sat on the ruined couch and thought for a few minutes how best to handle this as she Knew that even though she was the General of The Minutemen Ronnie Shaw still didnt trust her too much. "I need you to send word to Ronnie Shaw at the Castle, she seems to hate me but she will listen to you, and as I am in no position to be able to take this on personally I think she and her group would be best. We have Mortars set up at Tenpines Bluff for additional support and if she takes her five best snipers and a few grenadiers it shouldnt be too much of an issue." Preston stood quietly while Nora explained the best route and the plan of action that she knew would work best, and he had to admit she was right. He smiled knowing he had definitely picked the right person to lead the Minutemen back from the brink.
Preston took his marching orders and set out for the Castle to talk to Ronnie in person as he knew Nora was right, Shaw hated the ground she walked on but still respected her position of leader of the Minutemen. Nora meanwhile took a slow walk over to the graves of her husband and her faithful friend and taking some small flowers she had found growing behind house, laid a few on both graves. Nora held the fresh tears at bay as she sat beside the gravemarkers and barely noticed as Piper sat beside her,and placed an arm aorund her shoulder. "I know its not fair Blue, but we need to find out what we can about the crazy bastard that attacked you as well." Piper said softly "Tomorrow we should go to Diamond City to see what Dr. Sun discovered about him." Nora replied morosely.
The next morning found both Nora and Piper on the road to Diamond City, at he behest of Nora Piper was in a full suit of T-45 power armor and even though she didnt really enjoy how clunky it was at this point Piper was willing to do anything Nora asked if it meant she would be happy. As the two passed the old Red Rocket Nora froze and stared at the decrepit pumps as waves of emotion swept over her, remebering fondly about the day she had met Dogmeat and subsequently learned about the Mole Rat nest under the station. As Nora stared a single tear slid down her cheek, quickly being replaced with a look of anger and greif the likes of which chilled Piper's blood. They stood together in silence for a full twenty minutes before Nora spoke. "I met him right here the day after i left Vault 111." "He was happy to see me and sad that he had lost someone he had loved, And I think thats why we instantly liked each other." Piper didnt say anything but slowly walked up to where Nora now stood, her Power Armor making a soft clunk clunk clunk with each step she took. "When this is all done, I want to fix this place up and make a monument for him." Nora said sadly. "I'll be right there with you Blue, to help in whatever way i can." Piper stated with tears in her eyes.
As the duo made their way into Concord a muffled thump drew Nora's attention to the old bookstore on the corner, and no sooner had she taken a step towards the sound, a blue laser bolt whized by her face and struck Pipers armor clad chest. "Ambush!" Piper yelled and drew her 10mm ducking for cover to fire back at her attacker, and as she reached a covered vantage point she noticed that Nora had drawn the gun she called Spray n' Pray. "Blue dont be crazy! Get to cover" "I'll be fine Piper" Nora yelled back amidst a hail of laser fire that seemed to somehow just miss Nora every time. "They arent trying to kill me, If they were we would already be dead Piper." Nora stated flatly and pulled the trigger unleashing a hail of explosive .45 rounds at anything that moved in front of her. As Nora continued to fire back the laser fire slowly diminished until only one Synth remained standing, which Nora had very effectively cornered in the back of the Bookstore. Piper watched in awe and fear as Nora took both of its arms and one of its legs clean off with the submachine gun and began to move toward the crippled synth.
"What the fuck do you want with me you pile of god damned useless fucking scrap!? Talk now or never talk again!" Nora half yelled half growled, a level of rage and raw emotion in her voice that Piper wasnt sure she liked hearing. "The objective is to take you into the Institute, we are sent to collect you." The synth said flatly in an odd mechanical voice. "The one in power armor is expendable and therefore needs to be eliminated." "Who sent you? Specifically. Tell me you takling scrap heap!" Nora growled, her voice so full of hatred Piper could almost smell it. The Leader of The Institute sent us. Even if you defeat us more will come, you will be taken to the Institue no matter how long it takes." "I'm going to let you return there scrap, but you deliver a message for me when you do. I'm coming, and when I get there I will bring and unstoppable torrent of rage and destruction with me."
With a bright blue flash the nearly destroyed Synth vanished into thin air and Nora screamed in rage then opened fire on one of the already destroyed Synths, emptying an entire magazine into the inanimate machine. "Blue, um are you alright?" Piper asked tentativley hoping she wouldnt have to avoid a hail of bullets herself. Nora turned to look at Piper, and Piper was shocked to see that Nora was smiling. "I'm perfectly fine babe, why do you ask?" Piper made a mental note to never piss Nora off for any reason. "OH you know just wanted to know why you filled the destroyed Sybth with more bullets was all but I think i'm better off not knowing is all" Piper chuckled nervously.
Later that afternoon Nora and Piper walked through the main gate of Diamond City and headed straight for 's office. "AH Nora welcome, Dr Sun said lightly I assume you're here to find out what I discovered about your attacker." "You assume correctly doc, what do we know." "Well for starters your attacker isnt human, its a Synth without a doubt. This component I took out of its head confirms it." I fucking thought as much," Nora stated hotly "What else were you able to find out?" "Well, and this is purley speculation mind you, but I think it wasnt originally sent to kill you, just capture you." "But something must have went screwy in its programming when it got here." "That sounds a lot more feasable than you think doc" Nora said, "earlier today Piper and myself were accosted by a small group of the all metallic Synths in Concord." I cornered one and made it talk before it vanished back to where ever the Institue is located, and it told me that capturing me was its objective but anyone with me was expendable." "I sent a message of my own to those fucks in the Institute however, I let them know that a storm is coming and when it arrives it will be their end."
