Chapter Eighteen: A Royal Student's Preparation for a New School Year
Leah stood in her bedroom chamber at her family's palace. She was dressed in the Everston Community Academy Uniform. It consisted of a white button up with a light blue vest with yellow buttons and a blue blazer with matching purple skirt and a matching yellow bow around her neck with blue penny loafer shoes. Her hair was down, and her blue eyes could be seen in the mirror.
Today was orientation day at Everston Community Academy. While it was still about two weeks before the school year was to begin, this event was still mandatory for all students to attend especially in the case of the first-year students of the academy. The event itself was mostly just introducing the faculty of the school and it's headmaster along with announcing class assignments and any changes to the school's policies that were implemented over the summer.
Leah already had a fairly good idea of how the school operated. Being the younger sister of two of the school's alumnus and having one older sister in attendance of the fourth-year classes meant that she got a look into the life of students there. This meant that she knew more about what she was getting into with the exception of her friend Lenny and her two nieces-in-laws Ari and Ruby.
Taking one last look at herself in the mirror she nodded and began to make her way out from the bedroom chamber that belonged to her. She, Ellie, her other niece-in-law, and Evelyn were to meet in the throne room to wait for the carriage that would take them to the school for the day after they had their breakfast.
Everston Community Academy's campus was in the middle of a forest. The students normally lived in the nearby cities with their families or teleported in via the way stones that the school had. Some lived in the dorms that the school had but only about a fourth of the school's population. It was only about thirty minutes out from each of them.
If she were to be honest she was nervous, not just because of the new school but because of her circumstances at the moment. Because of the situation with Jonathan and Dark Strom Leah was worried that they might try to kidnap her again. Thankfully she heard from Donny that security had been raised at the school so hopefully that would prevent that.
She was also thankful that her friends from the little club would be there. She hoped that seeing them would help calm her down. She didn't know what class she was in, but she hoped that at least one of her friends would be there.
She entered the dining room to see her mother and father along with Donny, Kelly, Evelyn, and Ellie sitting at the table waiting for her. "Good morning Leah, looking forward to your first year at ECA?" Donny asked with a smile.
Leah nodded and sat across from her father. "I am though I'm still a little nervous about the new school I'm glad that Scott, Evelyn, and my friends will be there. I hope some of the other tiny club members are in my class." Leah stated calmly has she ate the food that she had been given.
"That's good to hear Leah. You know, me and Donny were nervous when we first started at ECA. But we made lots of friends there and you might make some while your there too." Kelly smiled at her younger sister-in-law.
"I know but I already have a lot of friends. I want to spend my time at school with them you know?" Leah replied has she ate the food given to her by the servants attending to the family. Today they were having pancakes with maple syrup with bacon.
"I understand Leah but has a duchess in order to maintain political influence you're going to need to be able to learn how to make friends. Ones that aren't met through prior connections. Ones made through your own terms. You'll also need to learn how to judge character has well. Do you remember when I told you about why I broke up with Jonathan?" Victoria asked her daughter softly. Leah frowned and nodded.
Victoria and Jonathan had dated for a time when she was in high school. During that time she discovered that Jonathan was using her for her family money, which she was the last inheritor of. After that she broke things off with him. However Jonathan was too persistent for his own good which led to her and David filing a restraining order.
"Mom is right Leah remember when we first met Magda? When she first got here you and I both thought she was a good person until we learned who she was and that was only after I started suspecting something off about her. Not to mention that we didn't notice anything wrong with mom or dad until later on in both cases. That doesn't mean you can't spend time with the Tiny Club members of course." Donny pointed out.
"I know I'd still like for one of them to be there in case of someone like Jonathan or Magda is in my class." Leah replied softly.
"If you want I can have some of my classmates keep an eye out for you. I know some of them hate bullying in any form and are more then willing to but one in their place if they see them." Evelyn offered with a smile.
"I think that the school would appreciate it themselves." Kelly smiled at her sister-in-law. "Scott's told me that there's been an increase in harassment incidents at the school and some of the teachers are on the monitor list this year.
"Monitoring list?" Leah and Ellie asked having never heard of it before. Kelly and Donny nodded both having been involved with the list before.
"Yeah, you see when a teacher has caused an incident that was caused by them but wasn't severe enough to get them fired they are put on to a list for a number of years depending on how severe the incident was. If they are on the list they have certain privileges taken depending on the tier they're on. On tier one they can't supervise clubs or other after-school activities, field trips or any ceremonies and are subject to surprise visits and check ins by the headmaster and or another staff member. On Tier two they have to be supervised by an assistant teacher and have all the restrictions that tier ones are subject to. On Tier three a staff member has to be in the room with them at all times and they are only allowed to act as assistant teachers. If they cause enough trouble then they are either upped a tire and their time extended or fired depending on the severity of the second incident." Evelyn explained with a smile.
The family went on to talk for a few more minutes before it was time for the children to head to school for the day. Walking out of the palace grounds they saw the private carriage that had been arranged to take them to school. It was only 15 minutes for the young girls until they got out.
Everston Community Academy stood in the middle of a forest near a number of villages and small towns, and cities. It had a number of buildings that stood in a circular formation and were for the most part made of stone. The doors were made of dark brown wood and had silver handles. Students were walking the grounds all on their way to the auditorium. Staff stood around to direct the students to the auditorium.
There were a total of 3,600 students in the school. 1,800 middle school students and the other 1,800 high school students. Each year 600 students each divided into homeroom classes of 25 students. 24 homeroom classes were assembled each year, each one with its own unique set of students, some more so than others. With that being said, that didn't mean the teachers weren't unique in their own right.
Many students were talking with their friends about the coming school year and what they were hoping for. The auditorium was dim but there were lights on the stage. The seats were blue and soft, made to be comfortable and the curtains were closed, and students were finding their seats. There were signs in each area designating which class the area belonged to. These areas consisted of twenty-five seats with five-by-five seating with a chair behind them for the teacher. These areas were in rows of 24 each one dedicated for one year "Alright Leah and Ellie we're at my year's area. When you get to the first-year area just sit somewhere until you are assigned to your class or classes okay?" Evelyn smiled before making her way to her own class.
Soon enough Leah and Ellie saw their friends saving two seats for them. "Hey guys!" Smiled Leah happily. The crew turned and smiled at their missing members.
"Hey Ellie, Leah how are you doing?" Max asked with a big smile on his face. He had brown skin with black hair and brown eyes. He and Leah were the first to make up the Tiny Club. He had been introduced to her after Donut had come back into their lives after being taken from his parents for a number of years. After getting to know him for a time Donut had decided since he was transferring to EJCA and would be in the same class as her it would be a good idea to introduce the two of them. Ever since they became the best of friends and to this day were often seen together outside of school confiding in one another about their lives or studying together as well.
"We're doing great, what about you guys?" Asked Ellie with a smile. Ellie had been introduced after Kelly had gotten her though adoption after her cousin died and the father had prior criminal records along with the rest of her birth family. With the criminal records they had they were unable to take care of Ellie and she became Kelly's daughter thanks to the fact that her mother was there to watch over her.
Generally everyone was doing great. The group of preteens talked for a few moments before the announcement was made that the assembly was about to start and for everyone to take a seat. The curtains opened and a man with tan skin and brown eyes with a green suit was seen on the stage. Along with several staff members.
"Hello everyone and welcome back or to in the case of those who have transferred in or are first year's welcome to Everston Community Academy. My name is Scott Turtleson, and I will be your headmaster for your time at our school. We here at ECA serve to make sure that all of you will leave here not only with an education, but the tools you will need to take on the world has full-fledged members of society. From knowledge on current events and how they impact your life, to a basic understanding of the legal system or guidance on how job searching works, and politics, we plan to ensure that you will leave with everything that you need to know to live a successful life." Scott introduced himself to the audience.
"Throughout your time here you will learn not only about yourself but the world and how it can impact your life. You will struggle from time to time, but our teachers, staff and faculty and your classmates will be here to help you overcome them. Afterall the point of education is to prepare you for life after your time here with us. With that in mind, I will be allowing our staff and faculty to introduce themselves. But first I have a few announcements to make." Scott informed the students with a frown.
"Firstly the staff have noticed an uptick in bullying incidents in the last three years. This will not be tolerated by me, the teachers, the staff, or the faculty. So in order to make sure that this is handled I have had our head of security who will be introducing themselves shortly hire more hall monitors. So expect to see more of them around the hall has you walk around the academy. With that in mind you'll also see that there are more security personnel outside the campus as well. This is in response to the recent incidents over in Atlantide and the possible resurgence of the criminals that caused the Parva Alliance Political Civil War and the uptick in bullying that been reported here at our school. We have also hired new assistant teachers due to some of our teachers from last year being put on the monitoring list or the teacher needing assistance with their job. With that I will allow our staff to introduce themselves."
Scott then walked to the chair behind the podium and sat down with the rest of the faculty and staff. A man in his early thirties came up and took the podium. He had a mostly gray coat with red and yellow mixed in. He had read and brown hair with brown eyes. "Hello and welcome to our school. My name is Angelo Walker and I'm in charge of security here at the academy. I expect for all of you to not only treat me but the other people here with respect. With that being said if you have any security concerns expect you to inform me no matter what you're supposed to be doing during that time of day. I also want to make it known that I don't except prank calls on the job. If you use the school's security line to prank call me and I will give you a detention and possibly an explosion if you do enough times."
Angelo went back to his seat and a young woman about his age came up and introduced herself. She had blue hair with stars in it and brown skin with yellow eyes. "Hello everyone and welcome to our school. My name is Venus Ishikawa. I go by they/them and I'm the school's director of medicine. I will be in charge of the nurse's office. If at any time you or another student at the school is injured or ill please come and see me. Also I've been asked by the headmaster to remind student that those who needs medications at random times, such has inhalers, insulin, seizure medications are allowed and required to carry it on their person at all times. Any teacher that tries to make them leave it outside the classroom or in their locker will be put on the monitoring list for the rest of the year or longer if an incident happens during that time and will be held responsible if one happens. Teachers are also obligated to send you to me should the need arises. If they do not they will be held responsible for any permanent or lasting damage done. I hope that while you're here that you'll trust me to help you when needed. thank you."
Soon enough all the staff and faculty had been introduced and the students were ready to be assigned to their homeroom classes. Scott came up and stood at the podium. "Alright everyone, now that our staff has been introduced I will now be assigning all of you to your home room classes. I will first call out the class name and the teacher who will be in charge of the class. When the class is called if you're sitting in that class's area please vacate it and wait for more seating to become available in another classes area. When your name is called please sit in the seat that has your seat number in your class. Your names will be called according to your seat number."
"Starting with the first years we have class ECA-A7. They will be under the care of homeroom teacher and headteacher for first years Haruto Ishikawa. Students for this class will be Leah Pierceton, Maxwell Dogsonburge, Ellicean Pierceton, Ruby Aquarius, Alexzander Ranpart, Ana Okita, Artemis Umbra, Arial Ranpart, Kiyo Rasmos, Shino Crossrodes, Nico Alvarez, Lenard Aquarius, Phoebe Jonson, Yuuto Vanders, Clover Ravenseal, Shizu Miryoku, Sidney Bluewater, Angela Kent, Airianna Aquarius, Marcy Kent, Flora Bellaward, Cassandra Catson, Mason Duckworth, Yuki Jevilson and James Rosegold." Scott called out with a smile.
"Class ECA-B7 under the care of Malcom Moddy. Students for this class will be Thea Hawthrone, Bria Ryan, Lucretia Martinez, Iris Douglas, Vulcan Norris, Zephyrine Lows, Echo Iselin, Sapphire Rasmos, Jaida Castillo, Xero Frostburg, Ayden Foster, Kacey Rossi, Melanie Iselin, Femi Anubis, Gracey Rossi, Lotus Anubis, Rebecca Joelton, lynx Westly, Roja Okami, Wren Schaffelia, Maeve Jonson, Atlas Anubis, Avery Wingstrom, Dina Okami, Gray Schiffelia, and Aura Stromsong." Scott called out the next class after having the area cleared.
The rest of the first-year classes were assigned but Leah and the rest of the Tiny Club members sat quietly and tuned it out, for the most part they were eager to get to know their new classmates that they hadn't met yet. Leah though was interested in the fourth year. She wanted to know which class Evelyn was in. The last few years she ended up being in class ECA-E for the class of 1697. Though the school normally kept the same homeroom classes together until graduation there were students who got transferred around from time to time for various reasons.
"Class ECA-E10, will be cared for by Callum Crossrodes. Evelyn Pierceton, Caitlyn Heartfire Divil, Griffin Nakumura, Yudai Endo, Melisa Harmony, Ivory White, Chase Walker, Jax Kollmann, Rose Flowerthorn, Ember Jonson, Harper Leisure, Robert Marcon, Lesia Skyheart, Leslie Oriana, Prim Redrose, Eris Ford, Sarais Hightrees, Allen Beckley, Rosanna Perkings, Clement Crawford, Isela Mores, Aris Ford, Aaron Darklock, Amy Whitmore, and Emily Herman." Scott called out.
Evelyn smiled as she was already in the appropriate seat, as were the rest of her classmates. She was also pleased to see that her homeroom teacher would remain the same. Her classmates were the same as last year as well. She knew these people and how they operated. She could trust most of them to help her keep an eye on her younger sister's class. Despite not knowing her until three years ago and having a rough start to their relationship she still cared about the young girl. While there were still some rough patches in their relationship they were still close. It helped that Donny noted that they had a lot in common with one another and helped them see that.
With that the rest of the homeroom classes were called and the students were seated with their teachers for the year. Scott smiled and continued with the orientation speech. "Now that everyone is in their homeroom classes and seated I'd like to say that I hope that all of you will enjoy the school year and that you will all be able to learn not only what you need to become full-fledged members of society, but about yourselves has well. Believe me, the path to becoming one isn't easy, we teachers, staff and faculty would know. But we will be here to help you when you need it. Has all the second and higher year would know our school motto is "focus on being the best version of yourself that you can be." When applied to all walks of life this means always looking at your weaknesses and strengths and seeing how you can play off one another. So I want all of you to think about how you can improve and what about yourself you want to change instead of what others want you to change as we go through the year. With that I now will dismiss the homeroom teachers to allow them to show you to your homeroom classrooms and for the first years give you a tour of the school. Classes A7 through C7 your dismissed"
