Sakura glared at the chunin who had run away, "Kakashi-sensei taught me that those who abandon their allies are less than trash." she said coldly and the man winced.
The young kunoichi was still slightly blood stained even after taking another rinse after she cleaned up the headless corpses, and even though her pupils were black again it was plain that they still smoldered with unnaturally dark flames.
One Taki jonin cleared his throat, "So, some Iwa shinobi escaped and we cannot use that location." he pointed out, Sakura glared at the man.
Shibuki wasn't exactly the bravest man and the brass kunoichi was radiating malice, but he managed to avoid fidgeting too much by being as far from her as politely possible.
Shino adjusted his shades, "The plan could still work, but if the enemy knows we are scouting it would be best to hunker down again." he began, "Sakura-san, I would ask that you get some rest, why you ask? Because you will likely be the one to fight of the Tsuchikage should he lead the attack again due to your immunity to his devastating ninjutsu." he explained.
Sakura grit her teeth, the muscles of her jaw visibly taut, but she nodded. Kiba frowned, he agreed with Sakura's anger and thought the chunin deserved punishment.
Shino seemed to agree, "Then we will bring up the case of gross negligence, unnecessary retreat, abandoning of a cell member during a mission, and panic under duress to Hokage-sama later." the Aburame listed plainly, it was clear he was not going easy on the man.
"Borderline treason." Kiba added dryly, the Inuzuka were known to hold loyalty as a virtue to be put on a pedestal above most.
"Probably could have killed the two that got away if you stuck around." Sakura herself piled on, clearly angry. Shibuki was just relieved the girl wasn't trying to kill the man from what he'd heard of her temper, although from what he heard of Konoha the man wouldn't have much of a career after that stunt.
"So, what do you need, Sasuke-chan?" Naruto asked with a grin, he liked the Slaanesh shrine better but the way the Uchiha had asked intrigued him. Plus the blonde did actually still like his teammates despite their flaws.
"Itachi said Madara Uchiha is alive." Sasuke said bluntly as he lifted up a tatami mat behind the offering box to reveal a hidden stairway.
Naruto took a moment to consider what his teammate said, "That's stupid, Madara Uchiha would be ancient." he pointed out.
"Oh please, you think Tsunade and Orochimaru are the first powerful ninja to try to escape aging?" Sasuke pointed out, "Obviously he's not in his prime anymore, but I think I figured out something, there are a lot of puzzle pieces missing though." he grumbled as he went down the stairs.
Naruto saw no reason not to follow, "Well, fair point, immortality is way more common than we thought." he agreed as he crossed his arms. Maemi shrugged and followed the two downstairs.
"Wait what? How common?" Sasuke asked, hesitating on what he wanted to say.
"We captured the head of a nukenin that can still talk and is insistent his immortality comes from some kami named Jashin." Naruto began, "This other guy got away who might have been immortal from the way everyone was talking, plus those two Orochimaru had were hard to kill and Orochimaru himself was pretty confident he has perfect immortality." the blonde explained calmly.
Sasuke halted at the bottom of the stairs, "Alright, your mission went weirder than mine, pretty sure you must be the actually cursed one of us." he said before he continued towards a large stone tablet in the hidden underground room.
"Hey!" Naruto gave an indignant cry at the insult as he followed.
"We knew it had to be one of us, but Sakura is downright normal, compared to us at least, Kakashi still seems baffled by the shit that happens sometimes, and while things can go wrong for me, you just can't seem to have a normal mission." Sasuke explained calmly.
"Have you been reading classified documents?" Naruto asked with a raised eyebrow.
Sasuke scoffed, "We're ninja, of course I've been reading your mission documents." he said as if it was obvious, "Now can either of you read this?" he asked and waved at the stone tablet.
"There are words among that?"
"I still have trouble with normal kanji."
"Well that answers that." Sasuke grumbled, "So, Sharingan is still the only thing that can decipher this, suck it Aoki." he muttered the last part under his breath, "I think Itachi wanted to take my eyes somehow and use them to defeat Madara, or Madara wants him to kill me and take my eyes." he gave his hypothesis without explaining his working out to his blonde teammate.
"Eye." Naruto corrected and the Uchiha glared at him, "What was he going to do, put them in the palms of his hands?" the blonde asked sardonically.
"Fuse them, I think." Sasuke confessed, "Like I fused my eyes into one." he added, "Possibly different, even Aoki isn't sure."
Maemi smirked triumphantly at a Fearling not knowing what was going on with something weird and mystical, but frowned as she realized she had no idea either.
"Well we have a week of gate guard and urban patrol duty before my esteemed self is promoted-" Naruto began to explain.
"Promotion?" Sasuke asked, the feathers of his brow ruffled in a way that the blonde realized indicated a creased brow.
"Yeah, to jonin." Naruto said with a smug grin as he puffed out his chest proudly.
Sasuke's beak snapped shut with a clicking sound before he sighed, "Fine, I'll just try to spend as much of the week training as I can get away with." he grumbled, "Then we need to prepare a plan to attack Akatsuki." he insisted.
"They're coming for me anyway." Naruto pointed out, "Also they'll want Fu-chan as well, so if they're going for jinchuriki, which just seems to be anyone with a Chakra no Bakemono in them, they probably want that Iwa shinobi we captured, Akayoroi." he explained.
"Han, but good point." Sasuke corrected but acquiesced, "So, I'm guessing you clashed with them, rescued Fu, and that's why you know what they're after?" he asked and the blonde nodded, "Alright, we'll try to come up with a better counterattack plan when Sakura gets back, because she will find a way to get involved regardless." he decided.
Naruto shrugged, "Okay, see you later." he said before he turned to leave.
"Don't tell anyone about the secret room beneath the shrine either." Sasuke ordered.
"This is a secret room?" Naruto asked, suddenly excited. The Uchiha wished he hadn't brought it up.
Naruto agreed not to tell anyone, but not before trying to get a rise out of the Uchiha. He wondered if instinctively trying to anger the champion of a rival of the god of rage was just part of his new instincts, but for some reason getting into small fights like that with Sasuke felt natural. He wondered if it was how brothers acted but he shook the thought from his head, he had no idea how brothers acted, so obviously the Uchiha was just his best friend.
It was odd to mentally acknowledge it, especially since Sasuke was a champion of Tzeentch, the only champion so far to Naruto's knowledge. Meanwhile Naruto himself was a Daemon Prince, but even Maemi seemed confused about the fact he'd kept his body.
"Why are we at another training grounds?"
Naruto glanced at his Familiar, she was almost up to his shoulders now, and he'd grown some himself since he first summoned her, "To train, duh." he said with a smirk as he pulled out a scroll and unfurled it.
Maemi decided not to point out he'd already trained, excessive training would be good but, "Your girlfriends at home will get worried if you're out too late." she pointed out instead.
"Yeah," Naruto agreed, "but we haven't had much time to practice with this." he said as, with a puff of smoke, he retrieved his kusarigama from the storage fuin scribed into the scroll.
Maemi cocked her head to the side, "Ah, you don't just want to be a kensai," she recalled, "you want to be Kanzen no Shinobi." she purred approvingly, "You just mastered the different shapes of katana until you got the best you could find, your nodachi, because Slaanesh-sama prefers them." her tone was full of approval.
"Yeah!" Naruto agreed happily, "So obviously mastering the other weaponry shinobi use is a given," he began as he started spinning the weighted end of the chain to get used to the feel of it, "maybe we should even ask Tenten-chan for tips, she's great at shurikenjutsu but she seems pretty interested in different forms of bukijutsu too y'know." he continued to practice swinging his weapon around as he spoke.
Maemi smirked, "I'm sure you two would have a lot of fun training together." she agreed, "You should probably name your nodachi though." she added.
"Eh?" Naruto asked as he hit his target but was annoyed by how ungracefully and slowly the chain returned to a ready grip, "What for?" he asked.
"Your nodachi is now of a similar level to the Kiba, those Raito on your back," Maemi began to explain, "it won't channel or focus chakra for you," she clarified, "but it is your weapon, you held it when you ascended so it will grow with you, and naming it will only help it to grow into a legacy of its own." she finished her lecture with a firm nod and a grin.
Naruto glanced over his shoulder at the sword, he'd barely noticed the weight of it rested over the Raito but he was very aware of its presence on him, then he grinned as he remembered what it was being used for before he bought it, "Monohoshisao!"
Maemi frowned at the rather boring name, and she got the feeling it was taken, "Why?" she asked bluntly.
"Everyone is scared about being hurt by weapons named Samehada or Kubikiribocho, but how embarrassing would it be to get carved up by Monohoshisao." Naruto explained before he burst out laughing, finding the idea so amusing that he actually doubled over.
Maemi sighed but couldn't resist smiling at the good cheer of the Daemon Prince she was bonded to, "If you're sure then." she agreed.
"Hokage-sama, we have a problem."
Tsunade did not groan no matter how much she wanted to, given the mission Gai was returning from this was serious no matter how late it was or how much she wanted to go home, "What happened with Raikage-dono?" she asked carefully instead of the many things she wanted to do.
"Oh," Gai seemed surprised by the question, "nothing bad with him, sorry, that part is fine." he said as he pulled out a small message scroll sealed with the Raikage's sigil, "However, a new, uh, Konton no Kemono is moving in from Oto no Kuni." he explained.
Tsunade frowned, "You're sure?" she asked.
"It had the same mark as the icon of the shrine outside of the Haruno household."
Well that removed any doubts about the nature of the beast, "Describe it." the Hokage demanded.
"Yamanokami." Gai began and Tsunade glared, "It's a giant boar, frothing, it's almost like a Chakra no Bakemono with how resilient it is, it truly does seem like the exaggerated tales of dire boars that come down from the mountain to demolish entire towns and reshape the land." he explained, "I managed to help lure it into a trench some chunin made, but from what we can tell even with my help those patrols out there can only slow it down."
Tsunade's eye twitched, "Why is it coming here!?" she snapped.
Gai tried his best not to shrug, he knew it would be unprofessional and would only anger the woman further, "I do not know." he confessed while keeping his posture stiff.
Tsunade reached for her sake, "Find Naruto, if he's difficult to find for some reason get Jiraiya, and if that man can't even be found at the hot springs peeping on women then get Kakashi to help you hold it off until myself or one of those two arrives." she ordered before she stood up and made hand signals to her Anbu.
Gai was surprised that Naruto was listed first, then the implication of exactly how much that meant sunk in when she clarified that Naruto alone could be trusted to deal with it but he nodded obediently and turned to look for one of the three.
Naruto wasn't entirely sure what Gai wanted so long after sunset, but the man had a serious expression when he pulled aside the flap to Ichiraku, "Sorry sir, we've just closed," Teuchi said, "Naruto-kun is just finishing that bowl." he clarified why the blonde was allowed to sit and eat before it could be asked.
Gai could guess that most customers probably wouldn't be allowed to stack up bowls while the chefs were closing but he didn't waste time arguing, he was amused the blonde was in literally the very first place he looked, "Sorry, but there's an emergency outside Konoha," the jonin began, "Hokage-sama ordered me to get Naruto-san to help deal with it. I'll explain more on the way." he finished urgently.
Naruto raised an eyebrow but lifted his bowl back and began to chug the remaining broth, soon the bowl was empty, his cheeks filled, and the hermaphrodite was chewing as he handed the bowl to Ayame as he reached for his purse.
"We'll put it on a tab for tomorrow, this seems important." Ayame picked up on how on edge the bowl cut jonin was and spared the man further waiting, the blonde gave a thumbs up and moved to follow while swallowing food that probably was not properly chewed.
"He's grateful." Maemi spoke for the blonde before chasing after the two shinobi.
Teuchi scoffed, "It's cute she thinks she needs to tell us." he muttered to his daughter as they began to finish cleaning for the night, the young woman nodded in agreement.
"Should I join his harem?" Ayame asked and her father dropped the bowl he had picked up, mercifully back into the sink with a splash, "Surely he needs a housewife among all those warrior women." she mused, unaware of Isaribi, "I do know his favorite dish." she added in an amused tone.
"Are you trying to give me a heart attack!?" Teuchi was not amused by his daughter, he hoped she was joking at least. The man took a deep breath, "If this is about me chasing off the last guy he was too old for you." he added, "On that note, Naruto-kun is too young."
Ayame rolled her eyes, "Somehow I doubt Naruto-kun's maturity is an issue, if you haven't noticed." she retorted dryly, "We know he can handle his money, he's never left his tab unpaid for long, he's polite, he's nice, he's cute, and also he's somehow maintaining all that while building a harem and the girls he dates always seem happy and maybe I want that."
Teuchi listened to his daughter ramble, "You know I won't stop you," he guessed, "and I probably can't intimidate Naruto if I wanted to." he added more quietly in a grumble to himself.
"You could intimidate him by refusing to serve him." Ayame pointed out, but she knew the answer before he said it.
"I love you, but I'm not risking that much of our income to scare off someone that wouldn't even understand why he's being punished, especially not if you're the one expressing interest."
"It's a massive boar," Gai began as they raced towards the gate and Naruto wondered what the big deal was, "before I left they were calling it the Ikari no Yamanokami," okay that sounded bad, "it tears through Doton no Jutsu of specialist as if they were mere mud fortifications, it seems nigh invulnerable-"
"It's fur gets in the way?" Naruto guessed, recalling the beast of a lion that his golden hide pelts had come from.
"Not as such," Gai denied with a shake of his head as they were allowed to race through the gate without complaint, an Anbu already explaining things to the on duty chunin, "its hide is so thick that it might not even bleed if you cut it too shallowly, hard to cut through, and behind that lays densely packed muscle of a ferocious beast that seems dead set on getting to Konohagakure no Sato." he finished.
Naruto frowned, he still wasn't ready to use his kusarigama and it sounded like this beast would need to be dealt with by his newly named nodachi or the lightning infused Kiba. His decision was swift and he reached up to pluck his long sword from its perch on his back, releasing the hold his chakra had maintained for almost the entire day, even while training.
Feeling the now familiar weight of his favored weapon in his grip the blonde grinned, he felt a certain need to use it against the so called mountain god of a boar. The blonde turned to the jonin as he flashed his fangs, "My magnificent self named this nodachi," he began proudly, "Monohoshisao."
Gai blinked owlishly, unsure if the blonde was joking or not, "I suppose it is long enough to be used as such." he mused with a raised eyebrow, "You plan to use that instead of the Raito?" he asked curiously.
Naruto nodded, "The Raito turns everything into Raiton chakra," he said, "my esteemed self can do better than that." he assured as brilliant pink chakra flowed down his arm and blade. Gai lowered his raised eyebrow and did not comment, he'd heard of how powerful that strange Hoshi chakra was.
It didn't take long for Naruto to hear the beast, he guessed he could cross the distance without worrying too much about the bond with Maemi and without a hand sign he used Shunshin no Jutsu. Gai's eyes widened as the blonde disappeared with a burst of speed and moved to use the same jutsu to keep up as Maemi did the same.
Naruto saw the boar and it saw him, he heard the Tatakainouta and his eyes widened as he planted his hooves. The boar was exactly as described, a massive boar the size of a small house, with dark matted fur, vicious tusks stained red with gore, a frothing mouth, a flash of brass near the shoulder, red eyes, and the mark of Khorne glowed red on its skull as if recently branded there, too recently, as if the brand itself was there.
The beast charged and Naruto swung Monohoshisao down to meet it, the tungsten blade flowed with Hoshi chakra and clashed with the skull of the boar, it cut into the hide but his chakra did not. His eyes widened since it was similar to Sakura and he realized it must have a brass collar.
Naruto tried to hold the boar back but he was pushed back, his hooves dug into the earth and he flared his chakra but that only served to dig deeper furrows in the earth beneath him as his sword forced a distance between his body and the tusks of the beast.
The Raito used chakra as well, as did most of his blades, so the tungsten nodachi was his best bet at killing the boar, but a clean swing had done nothing to halt its charge or damage its skull from what he could see. He took a deep breath and braced himself for his next move, then he pulled his sword back and swiftly thrust.
Monohoshisao cut across the left eye of the beast but glanced off into the left shoulder of the boar before it could go deeper, Naruto was again pushed back almost as soon as he'd stopped and was nearly gored as he was slammed through a tree.
Wood splintered around him as the blonde realized his song was not much use against this kind of opponent and he understood why people hired shinobi or samurai to deal with mountain boars that came down to villagers. He also grudgingly confessed silently to himself that he could see why a mortal might mistake such a monster for a mountain god.
Naruto sidestepped around the beast, pulled his blade back over his left shoulder as he did, and swung deep into the side of the beast. He cut from shoulder to haunch but its only response was to turn, skid into a few trees, knock them down, and charge the blonde again.
His eyes widened and he tried to thrust into its snout, another attempt at stabbing it in the brain, but still his heavy sword clashed against the bone of the beast and glanced away from the opening he wanted to stab through before it got caught in the bone. Naruto was baffled by how dense the bones he was trying to cut through must be, even without using chakra nagashi his nodachi was still tungsten.
Again the boar pushed the shinobi back, he understood how they'd managed to stall it then, goad it into attacking a different direction to Konoha. Naruto supposed patrols couldn't be expected to do that forever and that fuinjutsu would be needed to deal with the boar, so he disengaged and leaped to escape its gaze as it snorted and scanned the area.
The other shinobi were all hidden, the blonde noticed a few looking at him with shock but ignored them as he considered what fuinjutsu he knew. Not a lot and probably nothing that could stop the boar, which left killing it.
So he lined himself up and used Shunshin no Jutsu to launch himself sword tip first into the midsection of the boar as it attempted to continue towards Konoha, the blade dug in deeper than any attack had managed yet and the beast shrieked angrily in pain as it thrashed.
Naruto frowned as he leaped back, due to the difficulty of removing Monohoshisao from the boar his pants ended up caught by the thrashing tusks even as he dodged, "Huh, you're actually probably the most dangerous, scary thing that Orochimaru has sent." he acknowledged, even with Jugo he had been able to cut the supposedly immortal berzerker.
The boar shrieked again as it tried to gore him, Naruto hopped back and swung his blade in a parry against the tusks, pink chakra formed wings from his back and he used the leverage of his sword against tusks to send himself further back, continuing the action to parry and move back as he lead the beast away from Konoha to give himself time to think of a way to deal with it.
Gai turned to Maemi as they followed, "What happened to you two?" he asked.
"Ascension." Maemi answered bluntly, "Apotheosis, basically imagine if a Kami could make Hankami by adoption," she began with the idea she got back in Oto no Kuni then she frowned, "actually that's basically what it is." she decided with a shrug, it was close enough to the truth anyway.
Whatever answer Gai was expecting, that Naruto was essentially a demigod by adoption was clearly not it. The man turned to watch the fight, but Maemi was smug to note he seemed less on edge, an indication the man believed her words and wanted to see how a Daemon Prince could fight.
Although that brass collar on the boar was an issue, Maemi was surprised that Orochimaru managed to get one on the beast if he was behind that too. The Alluress wouldn't be too shocked if Khorne had intervened to place the collar there between here and when it was released, but the beast would still have to have done something to catch the god's eye before that.
Naruto flipped in the air over the charging beast, swinging his Monohoshisao at the neck of the beast. The tungsten blade clashed with brass collar but to the annoyance of the recently ascended Daemon the collar was not broken, barely scratched as his blade slid off it and into the back of the boar.
Naruto tried to push his blade deeper but the boar squealed and bucked as it tried to knock him out of the air, it rolled over and knocked over a small group of medium sized trees. Blood stained the destroyed trees and bits of wood and leaves stuck to the bloodied fur of the panting, frothing boar.
The horned blonde landed, to the surprise of the watching shinobi he didn't seem winded. He did have an annoyed expression as he considered the boar while dodging it, he kept himself in line of sight so it wouldn't turn back towards Konoha as he began leading it back over stretches of land it had already destroyed.
Naruto knew logically that Jiraiya would show up and have some fuinjutsu to deal with it, but for some reason that solution bothered him. He realized he didn't just want to kill the boar, he needed to kill it, a personal desire to prove he deserved his ascension blended with an atavistic need he didn't fully understand, a need to kill this beast that was marked by the god who hated his god the most.
The blonde could not let the boar survive him, it was an insult to Slaanesh's choice to grant him Apotheosis. With that realization Naruto's stance shifted, dropping lower he planted his hooves with chakra and swung his sword thrice in a single breath.
The third cut stayed firm as Naruto was pushed back, away from Konoha again but he would not have nothing behind him forever. His tail lashed out and delivered venom into the boar, he struck viciously, hatefully, cruelly he blinded the beast by not only striking there but gouging at the visual organs with the barb of his tail.
The boar did not react to his venom before Naruto's back went through a tree for the second time that night, the squeals of the boar were grating on his frayed temper but he focused and intentionally pushed himself further from the boar, sliding faster through the earth under his own strength before his back went through a third tree.
Naruto took a deep breath, the markings on his face and arms glowed brilliant pink with Hoshi chakra, he brought his sword up, he exhaled as he swung down where he could see skull beneath everything. As hard as the boars skull was, tungsten was harder and the beast finally halted, Naruto's strike slammed its head into the earth and the two skidded for a few more yards before coming to a stop as the tip of Monohoshisao dug into the brain of the boar.
Naruto's breathing was even, the shinobi watching were surprised, they were silent until a moment later when Jiraiya arrived with a couple of Anbu, "Oh, Naruto-kun already dealt with it." he said blandly, having not seen the beast in action he was still impressed, "You guys made it sound like this unstoppable beast that no one could kill."
Naruto smirked as he lifted his nodachi to rest the back of the blade against his right shoulder as he watched his sensei take in the shocked and awed expressions of the surrounding shinobi, "Built different." he said as if that explained everything as he sauntered over to his sensei with his tail swishing behind him to flick blood away.
"Well I guess I might as well take the corpse back myself." Jiraiya said with a morose sigh as he pulled out a scroll.
Maemi could tell that had cemented it, Gai believed what she had told him, her choice of words would spread. She was confident that she was actually a step ahead of even Aoki with this move, but to be fair to the Fearling she had a massive head start.
"Naruto-kun, why are you so late for dinner?" Isaribi asked, her expression worried. Tayuya looked annoyed and hungry, Kin looked similarly annoyed but her hand was on the older former Otonin's thigh.
"We killed a Yamanokami that was charging for Konoha, it was probably big enough to destroy the whole village if we hadn't stopped it." Naruto explained with an amused laugh, Maemi noticed he'd slipped into a lazier royal 'we' when he could, it would spread credit to others but at this point she doubted it mattered.
"Sure it was, can we eat?" Tayuya asked.
"Isaribi-chan, did you make them wait for my esteemed self?" Naruto asked as he crossed his arms and frowned at the purple haired young woman.
The scaled girl looked sheepish, but it was Kin who spoke up, "It's her idea, but to be fair Haku-kun enforces it." she added and now it was the ice using pretty boy's turn to look sheepish.
Naruto shook his head, "Alright, no time to scold, dinner time." he said and made to walk towards where he could smell the food. Maemi decided not to mention that this would be his second dinner, it would just annoy the girls and Haku.
Naruto did not enjoy guarding the gate, he knew it was a job that needed doing and technically his heightened senses made him perfect for the job but he felt better suited to other tasks. Like crushing Oto no Kuni, he still wanted to do that.
Maemi being figuratively attached to his hip just meant that Tsunade had an excuse to give him the job without a partner too, so it was just him and his Familiar. The thought of having sex to pass the time crossed his mind, but there simply wasn't enough time with the foot traffic.
You would think a hidden village would have less people coming and going, it wasn't a constant line or crowd but shinobi passed through often enough to leave for missions or come back from missions that there wasn't any time for Naruto to goof off.
A bored Naruto wanted to goof off, but couldn't, it made him feel practically ill for reasons he couldn't explain. He groaned with frustration as his occupation forced him to go against his very nature, even if the nature was relatively new.
Naruto realized he was getting bored faster than normal, but he shoved that thought aside as he smelled the scent of someone familiar and bolted in their direction. The watching Anbu were alarmed but Maemi noticed, "It's okay, he's just grabbing a friend who was getting close by anyway." she assured, trying to calm down the hidden guards who were about to go after the blonde.
Soon enough Naruto returned with Hinata in a princess carry, his speed had clearly startled the kunoichi who had her four arms wrapped around him both under his arms and over his shoulders, "How was your mission?" the blonde asked cheerfully as he sat in his assigned gate guard chair with the former Hyuga heiress in his lap.
Hinata smiled, "Oh it was boring, but we succeeded perfectly, all the supplies delivered to Kusa." she assured.
The Anbu with the cat mask and the sword appeared from hiding, "That is the sort of information that should be brought to Hokage-sama." she pointed out bluntly, her arms crossed and her tone stern.
Hinata's eyes widened and her mouth opened in genuine surprise, she hadn't even considered the fact that she'd told Naruto before the Hokage, he was just the first person to see her since the mission, he'd grabbed her as soon as he'd detected her it seemed, and he'd asked her about her day.
"S-sorry." Hinata said, blushing as a bit of her old stammer came back, "Naruto-kun just asked in a really loving husband way so I couldn't resist." she confessed.
The Anbu did not miss the look of brief confusion on Naruto's face that indicated he had not actually intended to do that, "It's fine," the masked kunoichi began carefully, "just get to the office to give a report before you get all deredere." she scolded lightly.
Hinata blushed brighter as Naruto grinned, "Can't she wait until the rest of her team arrives?" the blonde asked, "They're supposed to report together anyway, and we just wanted to hear if Hinata-chan fought anyone interesting but it doesn't seem like anything interesting happened at all." he explained before he sighed.
The Anbu woman looked and saw the team was just down the road, to her relief they had picked up above a walking pace but once they saw that Hinata was with Naruto she was annoyed to note that Kurenai slowed down and the others followed suit.
The purple haired Anbu kunoichi decided not to answer and instead moved to a new hiding spot, she pointedly ignored the fact that Naruto's eyes glanced over every hiding spot that held an Anbu operative.
Once Asuma, Choji, and Kurenai arrived at the gate Maemi confirmed their arrival for Naruto as Hinata hesitantly disentangled herself from her blonde lover, "Tell me about your new boons when we're home?" the pale eyed kunoichi asked as she stood.
Naruto laughed, "Of course." he assured, he knew she could tell something had happened from his new pink markings but he was looking forward to telling her he'd achieved Apotheosis.
"Hankami?" Tsunade asked and Gai nodded, Kakashi didn't look surprised or concerned but that man was hard to get a read on. Surprisingly Jiraiya just looked curious so the Hokage pressed on, "I heard the term for what he became was Kajomao." she pointed out.
"They might not be mutually exclusive titles." Jiraiya pointed out, "How many Mao from legends and myth would also be called Hankami if you looked at their lineage?" he asked.
Tsunade had no idea what the actual answer to that was, but from what Jiraiya implied it was a lot, "We know his parents." she pointed out dryly.
"We do?" Gai asked.
Kakashi looked at Jiraiya and Tsunade before he turned back to his rival, "Minato-sensei had a baby with Kushina-san." he said bluntly.
Gai was confused for all of a second before he registered the look of fury on Tsunade's face and bemusement on Jiraiya's, "Oh, then Naruto-" he began before his eyes widened, "that's why he's the jinchuriki." he realized.
"How did no one piece it together anyway?" Tsunade asked, she thought it was fairly obvious knowing the two personally.
"No birth records whatsoever in any hospital, even his mother was unknown." Kakashi explained.
Tsunade looked furious again, "Are you shitting me!?" she snapped, "Do you have any idea what civilians who don't understand fuinjutsu would think of that!? What shinobi who barely understand fuinjutsu would think of that!?" she asked angrily.
Kakashi looked a bit ashamed as he rubbed the back of his neck and avoided eye contact, he recalled well enough how badly Naruto used to have it. Jiraiya coughed into his fist, "Uh, uncomfortable tragic pasts aside," he began and suppressed a wince at the glare the Hokage gave him, "Naruto-kun being a Hankami by adoption does seem likely." he continued.
"How so?" Tsunade challenged as he squared her posture and crossed her arms, her eyes narrowed at her old teammate.
"He gets away with calling a literal Kami his kaachan and tousan in the same breath while preaching and hasn't received divine punishment." Jiraiya answered sardonically as a smirk crept up to his face.
Kakashi tried not to laugh, "Huh," he covered his exhaled bemusement, "I guess that is a good point." he acknowledged as the Hokage's left eyelid twitched and a vein throbbed in her forehead.
Tsunade closed her eyes and took a deep breath, "Alright, you have a point." she agreed, to the surprise of the others, "You know who the most recent Hankami in legends is right?" she added.
Gai frowned as he considered that, "The progenitor of ninjutsu?" he asked.
Jiraiya nodded, "Rikudo Sennin, all the most powerful and noble clans claim lineage from him, according to legend the Senju and Uchiha are descended from him and their rivalry started while he was still alive." he added.
"Which would also make the Uzumaki descended from him." Kakashi mused and the other ninjas turned to stare at him, "If it's true." he added.
"Until Shodai-sama founded Konohagakure no Sato and started the ninja village system the world was still in the Sengoku Jidai." Tsunade began as she stepped her fingers, "Shinobi fought for whoever had the highest bid and samurai fought for Daimyo, clans fought, warred, and formed rivalries over land. Shodai-sama was called Shinobi no Kami for having the power to end this period of rampant child soldiers."
Gai already knew this, and he knew the others knew it, but he wondered what she was getting at, "Sarutobi-sensei was also known as Shinobi no Kami for having power to rival Shodai-sama." Jiraiya interjected.
"And what legendary figure did that title come from?" Tsunade asked rhetorically, they all knew it was the Rikudo Sennin, "Well, I think we may have our fourth living Shinobi no Kami." she decided as she pulled out another bottle of sake.
Gai finally understood what the Godaime Hokage was hinting at, he almost questioned her until the image of the blonde felling the boar earlier that night flashed through his mind and he held his tongue.
Kakashi had not even seen the boar so he raised an eyebrow, "The way you were talking, you think he's going to do a bit more than Sandaime-sama about the current state of the world." he pointed out.
Tsunade smirked as she poured herself a cup of alcoholic rice wine with hints of plum, "Well, they're called Konton no Kami, a Hankami of one of those is bound to upend something." she mused, Gai couldn't help but be worried at the attitude the other three elite shinobi had towards that idea.
His thoughts were cut off by a knock on the door, "We'll go." Jiraiya said before he hopped out a window, Kakashi shrugged and left out the door with Gai, the two jonin gave a nod to Asuma, Kurenai, and their two respective genin as they passed.
Translation Notes: As I'm sure some guessed from context the name Naruto chose for his sword isn't particularly threatening, and I'm sure some probably saw it coming or understood the reference from context clues.
I think I have probably referenced Yamanokami once before in the story, it just means mountain god but is thought to refer to rabid boars or particular large boars who were enraged in some way. I don't think it bears putting in the regular translations, mostly because I consider it to be similar to terms like hengeyokai, bakemono, or tengu in that they're descriptors of something common in Japanese folklore, much like how I don't translate kitsune into fox or karasu into crow unless I'm referring to a common form of the animals that isn't using chakra or magic, or how I refer to the meteorite from Hoshigakure as the Hoshi but still call stars stars.
