Chapter 3

Kiara looked around in her bedroom, her own bedroom..she thought to herself. She got used to sharing a room with the other girls back at the Orphanage, she unpacked with what little clothes she had to the drawers, her toys in the chest. Kiara placed the white carnation on the vase by the window.

"Seto...Mokuba i miss you guys." Kiara said softly.

A soft knock echoed making the young girl jump, she turned her head.

"Kiara? Dinner's ready." Her father said

Catherine waited nervously at the dinner table. She glanced at the older stern looking man salt and pepper hair in late fifties, her father in law, known to be a ruthless business man.

"Don't be nervous." He said "It's just dinner."

"Our first dinner with her." Catherine said

"Her? You didn't tell me you adopted a girl." He said "I thought you and my son adopted a boy."

"Kenji and i decided on her." Catherine said standing her ground. "We both chose her as our child..we knew you wanted a grandson but she touched our hearts more than anyone."

Before Jiro said anything, Kiara and her husband Kenji arrived, Kiara smiled politely at her.

"Kiara...this is Jiro Sasaki your grandfather." Catherine said

"Hello." Kiara said Jiro stared at the young girl, Kiara felt nervous under his gaze. "Nice to meet you."

"Let's have dinner now before it gets cold." Catherine said

There was an awkward silence in the dinner table, Kiara stared at her plate it was something she wasn't used to, she recognized that it's some type of fish, greens that she could identify as brussel sprouts mixed with broccoli and roasted potatoes.

"Kiara is something wrong?" Her mother asked

"Ah...n..no." Kiara said lightly flustered not wanting to cause trouble, she had tried to eat what was in front of her.

Catherine raised an eyebrow seeing the young girl. "Kiara tell us a little about yourself." She said

Kiara placed her knife and fork down, trying to mind her manners. "Like what?" Kiara asked

"Well...what's your favorite food, hobbies that sort of thing." Catherine explained.

"My favorite food...i like fried shrimp and hamburger steak!" Kiara smiled "And sweets!"

"What are your hobbies?" Kenji asked

"Well...i love gardening! The game duel monsters and chess!" Kiara said

"Chess?" Her grandfather spoke up, most kids her age do play chess but some don't have the patience for it.

"I played a lot with my friend Seto and his brother Mokuba." Kiara said then she frowned. 'I wonder how they're doing?'

After dinner Catherine watched as one of the maids picked up the plates, almost all the plates were empty except for Kiara's. She noticed that the young girl barely ate through dinner although Kiara had sampled most of what's on her plate she left most of it, this made the new mother worried if she'll have the proper nutrition she needs.

'Did she not like it?' She thought.

"I guess that meal didn't suit her…"Catherine said letting out a sigh. " I was sure she'd like it."

"My lady..if i may say something." The maid said. Catherine nodded for her to continue. "She is a child, and children tend to be picky eaters, it might take some time for her to get used to these types of meals..maybe start off with something she likes."

Catherine nodded her head, she thought back at the conversation she had with her during dinner. "Yes, you're right." She said getting up from her seat she smiled at the maid. "Thank you Tabatha."

Three days later….

Kiara walked around the house exploring it, the house felt big and spacious for the young girl.

"Young miss, are you lost?"

Kiara turned around recognizing the maid.

"I...um…" Kiara glanced down at the floor. "I'm just exploring…"

"Exploring? Well be careful." She said softly. "If you need anything don't be afraid to call for me."

"Ah...okay, thank you...um...Tabatha." Kiara said a small smile escaped her lips while the maid nodded.

Once Tabatha left to continue with her work she walked towards Kiara's room to clean she was surprised to find everything neat. She knew most children would forget to clean up after themselves, she was expecting clothes scattered around the floor, toys everywhere but nothing the dirty clothes was in the hamper , toys in the chest. She looked at the vase by the window sill of a wilted flower. Tabatha raised an eyebrow wondering why the young girl didn't discard the flower, it was already gone.

'Maybe putting a fresh one will make her feel more at home.' Tabatha thought. 'If i remember correctly she had a white carnation.'

Meanwhile Kiara wandered into a room well...an office more like it, no one was around she saw a large desk and chair, a large cabinet with bottles in it, a large book shelf filled with books and she saw a small table with chess board and pieces on it, with two chairs.

The blue haired girl looked at the chess pieces seeing it into what looked like a match in the progress.

'I know that move! Seto used it to beat me.' Kiara thought she raised her hand and took the white queen moving it diagonally. "Checkmate!" She said smiling.

"Checkmate?" A voice said Kiara froze she turned her head seeing her grandfather looking at her. He sat at the opposite side of her staring at the pieces, he looked at the move that she did. 'Interesting…'

"I...um…." Kiara stammered.

"Well?" He said taking the pieces placing them back into the original places. "You said you like chess, let's have a game."

Kiara nodded as she sat down, the older man stared at the young girl. 'One game won't hurt.' He thought 'It will tell me all I need to know.'

Meanwhile with Catherine…

"Okay, Catherine you can do this, just follow the recipe..sure you've only cooked a few times..of course some failed attempts...but you can handle making this simple dish." She said to herself rolling up her sleeves. Adding the ground meat on a large bowl, picking up some spices.

"My lady what are you doing?" Tabatha said walking into the kitchen finding the blonde woman making a mess in the kitchen a few dirty bowls in the sink, some flour on the counter.

"I'm making Kiara's favorite meal hamburger steak." Catherine said placing the bowl down, she went to the sink and washed her hands for the next step.

"You don't have to do that, I can-"

"I know i don't have to, i want too." Catherine said making her way to the cutting board peeling off the skin of the onion. "This is what mother's do right? Cooking their child's favorite meals..I want to make something for her to show her that i listened and to show her that we want to know her even more." Her eyes started watering while cutting the onions. "We have her in our lives now, I want her to be happy here with us." She stopped cutting onions and sniffled.

Tabatha smiled softly, she had only been working for three years in the home and grew to care for her bosses, she felt heartbroken when she found out of their infertility, now that the child is here everything is new for them. "My lady, If you want i can help you." She said

"No thank you, you can make the other meals i want to make Kiara's meal myself." Catherine said fully determined.

Jiro watched the young girl in deep thought in their chess match. He moved his piece. "Check." He said as he crossed his arms over his chest.

Her blue eyes stared at the pieces and smiled moving her white piece diagonally, landing next to his. "Checkmate!" She said "Best out of seven?"

"No." Jiro said "Why don't you go and get ready for dinner?"

Kiara nodded as she got off from her seat walking to the door she paused to turn around.

"Thank you for playing chess with me." Kiara said as she left the room.

Jiro stared at the pieces. "Having a granddaughter might not be so bad…" he said to himself.

It was now dinnertime Kiara waited in her seat, her father and grandfather waited, Tabatha served their meals, she looked up at Catherine nervously holding a plate for the young girl.

'Please let her like it..' She silently prayed as she placed the plate in front of Kiara.

"Is this...hamburger steak?" Kiara said looking at the plate, she stared at the oddly shape burger with what look liked thick sauce covering it along with some vegetables.

"Yes, i made it just for you." Catherine said sitting next to Kiara.

'Just for me?' The young girl thought staring at her plate, her blue eyes shifted to her adopted mother's hands seeing some band aids around her fingers, a sign that the woman hardly cooks. Kiara couldn't help but feel something warm spread through her. 'She made this for me…'

Catherine felt her heart beating fast as she watched the young girl pick up her fork cutting into the meat. She watched the young girl take the first bite.

"H...how is it?" The woman asked softly.

Kiara smiled brightly. "It's good!" She said

"Really?" Catherine smiled the young girl nodded as she continued eating her meal.

Her father smiled, knowing that his wife isn't the best cook yet she tried making something for their child. Kiara left her plate clean.

"Thank you, it was really good." Kiara said

Catherine beamed at the compliment, smiling at the young girl. After dinner Kiara went to her room she noticed a fresh white carnation by the window sill.

The next day Cathetine presented a white hi lo off shoulder dress and white flats to the young girl.

"What do you think?" Catherine asked

"It's so pretty!" Kiara said smiling.

"You'll be wearing this to a party tonight." Catherine said

"A party?" The young girl repeated.

"It's a business party, who knows you might find kids your own age as well." Her mother said "Now let's get you ready to go."
