Disclaimer: I Don't own Doctor Who that goes to the BBC
A group of four pirates rowed the long boat back to their ship through still waters through dense fog. The ship was still as there was not enough wind to fill the sails though a small breeze blew the array of charms hanging like chimes.
The pirates climbed aboard and were greeted by another, "What's wrong?" One of them asked.
"Man wounded," another pirate answered, grimly.
"Wake him," one of the pirates said, stunned as he looked at the wounded man as he pointed to the aft of the ship
The pirates were there, in the Captain's cabin, waiting on the Captain's decision. "He slipped in the bilge water, Cap'n, and fell on to the rigger," one of the pirates said, "His hand... I don't know if he'll survive."
The Captain turned around and looked at the wounded man's hand, where there was a small scratch on his finger, "You're a dead man, McGrath," the Captain said as he turned over McGrath's hand to reveal a black spot on his palm, "Same as all the others," They heard a hypnotic woman's voice singing, "She's here."
"Oh, save our souls," one of the pirates muttered.
"I've got to escape!" McGrath cried as he ran from the cabin.
"Don't go out there! McGrath! Don't listen for God's sake. The siren is a-calling," one of the pirates called after him.
The Captain locked the cabin door. He then took a pendant from his neck and wrapped the leather strap around the door handles. On one side of the pendant was a carved relief of a mermaid. The others heard McGrath's scream as the pendant slowly swung at the lock.
The other pirates came out on deck. There was no sign of McGrath, only his pistol. The Captain picked up the pistol. "Same as all the others," the Captain said, "No sign of a struggle. No bones or blood."
"We're shark bait, every single one of us," one of the pirates said, "Stuck on the ocean, waiting until the wind changes."
"What's that?" The Captain asked as he heard a banging from one of the hatches.
"The creature, it's returned," one of the Pirates said, fearfully as they approached it cautiously as the Captain aimed the pistol at it.
The hatch then suddenly burst open to reveal the Doctor, Rose, Jack, Rory and Amy.
"Yo ho ho!" The Doctor exclaimed, "Or does nobody actually say that?"
A while later the Captain was questioning the presence of strangers on his ship, "We made no signal."
"Our sensors picked you up. Ship in distress," the Doctor explained.
"Sensors?" The Captain asked, causing Rose and Jack to facepalm themselves.
"Yes. OK. Problem word. Seventeenth century," the Doctor said before explaining what he meant in 17th century terms, "My ship automatically, er..noticed-ish... that your ship was having some bother."
"That big blue crate!?" The Captain asked with disbelief as the Doctor snapped his fingers.
"Tis more magic, Captain Avery," one of the pirates told the Captain, "They're spirits. How else would they have found their way below decks?"
"You would call me a spirit," Jack told them, "Because I can't die. If I die, I'd come back to life a few minutes after dying."
"Jack?!" Rose hissed at him.
"What, Rosie?" Jack asked the Time Lady, "I figured it'd be easier to tell them that now than later as they'd be freaked out if they see me die and come back to life."
"Good point," Rose told him.
"Well, I want to say multidimensional engineering, but since you had a problem with sensors I won't go there. Look, I'm the Doctor, this is my wife, Rose and these are our friends, Amy, Rory and Captain Jack Harkness. He's not really a captain, we call him that for fun." Jack then glared at him, "We're pirates, same as you. Arghhhhh!" The Doctor turned to look at the pirates behind them and when he turned around, Avery had a pistol aimed at his head, "Except for the gun thing. And the beardiness."
"You're stowaways! Only explanation," Avery said, "Eight days, we've been stranded here. Becalmed. You must have stowed away before we sailed."
"What do we do with 'em?" One of the pirates asked.
"Oh, I think they deserve our hospitality," Avery answered.
At the ship's deck, the Doctor was standing at the edge of a plank jutting over the side of the ship as the pirates laughed.
"I suppose that laughing like that is in the job description," the Doctor told them, "Can you do the laugh? Check. Grab yourself a parrot. Welcome aboard."
"Stocks are low. Only one barrel of water remains. We don't need five more empty bellies to fill. Take the doxies below to the galley," Avery said, "Set them to work. They won't need much feeding." Two of the pirates 'escorted' Amy and Rose to the stairs that lead below-decks.
"Rory, a little help?" Amy said as she called out to her husband, who was being restrained by another pirate.
"Theta! Help us!" Rose yelled at the same time.
"Don't worry, Arkytior. Me and Jack will think of something," the Doctor told her.
"Hey, listen right. They're not doxies," Rory told the pirates.
"I didn't mean just tell him off. Thanks anyway," Amy remarked sarcastically.
"Yeah, thanks, Rory!" Rose muttered as the pirates forced them below.
"If you're lucky you'll drown before the sharks can take a bite," Avery told the Time Lord.
"If this is just because I'm a captain too, you shouldn't feel threatened," the Doctor told him, "Your ship is much bigger than mine. And I don't have the cool boots. Or a hat, even."
"Time to go," Avery said as he aimed his pistol at him.
"A Bit more laughter, guys?" The Doctor said as he motioned the other pirates with his hand to make them laugh more before they began laughing.
"Amy, what are we going to do?" Rose asked Amy.
"We're going to do this, Rose," Amy answered as She opened a chest and found it filled with swords and took out two out and as she's testing the feel of it in her hand, she saw two long coats and tricornes hanging on a peg and grabbed them and handed one to Rose.
"Where are the rest of the crew? This is a big ship. Big for five of you. I s'pose the rest of them are hiding some place," the Doctor said before he held his nose, "and they're going to jump out and shout boo."
"Boo!" Amy and Rose both shouted at the same time.
The men turned around to see Amy and Rose wearing the coats and hats, with their swords pointed at Avery's throat.
"Throw the gun down," Amy ordered before Avery dropped the gun to the deck and Amy kicked it away, "The rest of you, on your knees."
"Amy? Rose? What are you doing?" The Doctor asked them.
"Saving your lives, Theta," Rose answered, "OK with that, are you?"
"Put down the swords. A sword could kill us all, girl," Avery ordered them.
"Yep, thanks. That is actually why we're pointing them at you," Amy explained.
One of the pirates came at Amy with a wooden handle, surprising her and forcing her back from Avery. When the Doctor tried to intercede, Avery pushed him back into the rigging. When Amy advanced on the pirates with the sword, they backed away, gasping in fear as Rose did the same to the other pirates. Amy then showed off a little, swishing the sword through the air. The pirates took advantage and pushed forward again. She fought them off as one of them advanced on her with a rope, backing her into a corner. Amy swung through the air on a piece of rigging, swinging her sword. She cuts a dark skinned pirate as she passes before landing on a barrel.
"You have killed me," the dark skinned accused
"No way. It's just a cut," Amy said with disbelief as a black spot appeared on the dark skinned pirate's hand.
"What kind of rubbish pirates are you?" Rose asked.
"One drop, that's all it takes. One drop of blood and she will rise out of the ocean," Avery explained.
"Come on. I barely even scratched him," Amy scoffed, "What are you all in such a huff about?" One of the pirates approached her as she swung out on the rope. He stopped her and the sword flew from her hand as Rory tried to catch it, but cut his hand as a black spot appeared on his palm as Rose threw her sword into the ocean below.
"Doctor, Rose? What's happening to me?" Rory asked both Gallifreyans.
"She can smell the blood on your skin," Avery explained, "She's marked you for death."
"She?" Rory asked with curiosity.
"A demon, out there in the ocean," Avery explained.
"OK. Groovy. So not just pirates today. We've managed to bagsy a ship where there's a demon popping in," the Doctor said as he looked at Rory's hand, "Very efficient. I mean if something's going to kill you, it's nice that it drops you a note to remind you."
"Quickly now. Block out the sound," one of the pirates said as a song then began to play. before
the others put their hands over their ears.
"What?" Rory asked, confused.
"The creature. She charms all her victims with that song," Avery explained.
"Oh, great, so put my fingers in my ears. That's your plan?" Rory said with disbelief, "Doctor, Rose, come on let's go lets get back to the...back to the…" He then began acting dopey and giggled.
"Why's he acting like that?" Jack asked.
"The music. It's working on him. Look," one of the pirates answered.
"You are so beautiful," Rory flirted with Amy.
"Wow, even I wouldn't flirt like that in these circumstances," Jack muttered.
"Oh, you wouldn't?" Rose asked him, "What about that time with River and the Silence?"
"I mean more dangerous than that," he explained.
"What?" Amy asked Rory.
"I love your get up. That's great. You should dress as a pirate more often. Cuddle me, shipmate," Rory said as he continued to flirt with Amy.
"Rory, stop," Amy pleaded.
"Everything is totally brilliant isn't it?" Rory asked her, "Look at these brilliant pirates. Look at their brilliant beards. I'd like a beard. I'm going to grow a beard."
"You're not," Amy told him.
"The music turns them into fools," Avery added.
"No wonder they're acting stupid all of a sudden," Jack muttered.
"I had the exact same thought, Jack," Rose said, agreeing with her immortal friend as Rory and the dark skinned pirate continued to act like they were drunk or high.
"Oh, my God," Amy gasped as off the starboard side of the ship, a section of the water glowed green. Everyone watched and soon a woman rose from the water. She, too, glowed green. Rory's jaw dropped at the sight of her. Amy grabs his arm and held him back as the Siren floated down to the deck. The dark skinned pirate walked towards her as the others half-heartedly grab for him as they, too, are entranced. The Siren had her arm outstretched as the dark skinned pirate reached for her hand. Still held back by Amy, Rory reached for her. As soon as the dark skinned pirate's hand touched theSiren, his body was dispersed. Rory then broke free from Amy.
"I have to touch her. Let me touch her," Rory said.
"Sorry, but he is spoken for," Amy said as she pushed her way past Rory and faced the Siren before the Siren hissed and turned red, sending Amy flying backwards as she landed on the deck.
"Amy!" Rose and Jack yelled.
"Everybody into the hold," the Doctor ordered as the pirates headed to the hold as Rory stood there, still entranced, "Rory!" The Doctor made sure Amy, Rose and Jack were safe before grabbing Rory.
"Hey!" Rory protested.
Soon they made their way down into the hold, splashing through the gathered water.
"What is that thing?" Amy asked.
"The legend. The siren. Many a merchant ship, laden with treasure has fallen prey to her. She's been hunting us ever since we were becalmed. Picking off the injured," Avery explained.
"Like a shark. A shark can smell blood," one of the pirates added.
"OK. Just like a shark. In a dress. And singing. And green," the Doctor muttered, "A green singing shark in an evening gown."
"The ship is cursed," Avery told him.
"Yeah right. 'Cursed' is big with humans. Means bad things are happening but you can't be bothered to find an explanation," the Doctor said.
"Rude!" Rose said as she slapped her husband's shoulder, playfully.
"She's the most beautiful thing I've ever seen," Rory blurted.
"Actually I think you'll find she isn't. We have to leave. Right now," Amy told him.
"I agree, Amy," Jack said, agreeing with her, "She's the last thing I would ever flirt with."
"That thing of yours really is a ship?" Avery asked the Doctor.
"Well, it's not propelled by the wind," the Doctor told him.
"Show me. Weigh anchor. Make it sail!" Avery said as he pulled out his gun.
"And the gun's back. You're big on the gun thing aren't you? Freud would say you're compensating. Have you ever met Freud? No? Comfy sofa," the Doctor muttered.
"Doctor, Sigmund Freud was born in 1856," Rose told him.
"Leave the cursed one, Captain," one of the pirates told Avery, "The creature can have him."
"Yes, please," Rory pleaded.
"We don't want the siren coming after us," Avery added as one of the pirates cried out as one of them lifted his leg from the water as There was something on it.
"It's a leech!" Amy exclaimed.
"Everyone out of the water!" Jack yelled as everyone climbed out of the water onto the crates as one of the pirates pulled the leech from his leg.
"It's bitten me, I'm bleeding," the pirate said as the black spot appeared on his hand.
"She wants blood," Rose realized, "Why does she want blood?"
"What were you saying about leaving the cursed ones behind?" Amy asked the pirate who suggested that they should leave Rory behind.
"It's OK. We're safe down here. No 'curse' is getting through three solid inches of timber," the Doctor said when the Siren appeared behind the Doctor and began to sing.
"You were saying?" Jack asked.
"Ah. Hello again," the Doctor greeted the Siren as Amy and Rose held back Rory but the pirate who suggested that they should leave Rory behind walked forward.
"No! No! No!" The Doctor, Avery and Jack all yelled as the pirate who suggested that they should leave Rory behind touched the Siren's hand and disappeared as his hat fell to the floor. Everyone rushed from the hold as the Doctor pushed Rory with the hat from the pirate who suggested that they should leave Rory behind's hat in his hand.
The Doctor then bolted the door behind him.
"Safe?" Amy asked, repeating what he said a while ago.
"He has his good days and his bad days, Amy," Rose told her.
"How did she get in?" Avery asked.
"The bilge water - she's using water like a portal, a door," the Doctor answered as he used his sonic screwdriver on the hat before he flicked it as it extended outwards, "She can materialise through a single drop. We need to go somewhere with no water."
"Well, thank God we're not in the middle of the ocean," Amy muttered, sarcastically as the Doctor puts on the hat.
"Did you see her eyes?" Rory asked her, "Like crystal pools."
"You are in enough trouble," Amy told him.
"Would it be better if I knock him out?" Jack asked as he was getting sick of Rory saying how beautiful the Siren was.
"No offense, Jack. But I think that would make things more difficult," Rose answered.
"Rose is right, Jack," the Doctor said, agreeing with her.
"The magazine!" Avery suddenly said.
"What?" Amy asked.
"He means the armoury where the powder's stored," Jack explained.
"It's dry as a bone," Avery added.
"Good let's go, there." The Doctor said.
"I give the orders," Avery said as he pulled out his gun and aimed it at the Time Lord.
"Ah. Worried because I'm wearing a hat now?!" The Doctor asked as he grabbed Rose's hand as they began to head to the magazine with Jack following them.
"Nobody touch anything sharp!" Rose warned them.
"Come on Rory," Amy told her husband as she pulled him by the arm.
In another section below-deck, one of the pirates took out a ring of keys to open a locked door.
"Quickly, man," Avery urged him.
"The key, 'tis gone, Cap'n," the pirate told him.
"How can it have gone?" Avery asked with disbelief.
"It seems that someone had the same idea we did," Jack said as he pushed the door down and they entered the room cautiously and saw that the room was empty.
"Barricade the door," Avery ordered as one of the pirates grabbed a lantern, "Careful of that lantern! Every barrel is full of powder."
"Who's been sleeping in my gun room?" The Doctor asked when Avery heard a muffled sound of someone coughing and removed the lid of one of the barrels and reached a hand in and pulled out a young boy.
"You fool. You fool, boy," Avery told the young boy, "What are you doing here?"
"Who is he?" One of the pirates asked.
"What, he's not one of the crew?" The Doctor asked.
"Doctor, he looks too young to be a pirate," Rose told him, "He looks like he's around 10."
"No. He's my son," Avery told the Doctor, "And he's about 14 years old."
A few moments later, the boy was sitting on a bench with Avery next to him as everyone else stood and looked on.
"What in God's name possessed you, boy? Your mother will be searching for you," Avery said before the boy looked down, telling Avery that his mother had passed away, "When?"
"Last winter," he answered, "Fever. She told me all about you. How you were a Captain in the Navy. An honourable man, she said. How I would be proud to know you." He then coughed, "I've come to join your crew."
"I don't want you here," Avery told his son.
"You can't send me back. It's too late. We're a hundred miles from home," the boy told him.
"It's dangerous here. There's a monster aboard. She leaves a mark on men's skin," Avery told his son.
"The black spot?" The boy asked before showing him the palm of his hand and they saw that there was a black spot on his hand, causing Avery to grab his son's hand as he began coughing again.
A little later, Rose, Amy, Jack, the Doctor and Rory were sitting while the pirates stood as Rory rubbed the spot on his palm.
"There's nothing wrong with the boy. He has no scars," Avery told them.
"Yep. Ignore my last theory," the Doctor told him.
"He has his good days and his bad days," Amy said, remembering what Rose told her earlier.
"It's not just blood. She's coming for all the sick and wounded. Like a hunter chooses the weakest animal," the Doctor realized.
"I was thinking that too," Rose told him.
"Me too," Jack said.
"OK, look. He's got a fever," Amy told the Doctor.
"The siren knows it. Humans. second-rate. Damage too easily. It's only a matter of time before everyone gets bruised. My ship. it can sail us all away from here. You, Rose and me, we fetch it. Let's go," the Doctor said as he and Rose stood up.
"You're not the Captain here, remember?" Avery reminded him as he pulled his pistol back out as the boy opened one of the barrels to reveal water as the Siren reached through with her arms before the Doctor forced the lid back on.
"The water's dangerous. That's how she gets through. One touch of her hand and you're a dead man!" Avery explained to his son as the Doctor placed his hand on the shoulder of Avery's son.
"We're all cursed if we stay aboard!" One of the pirates proclaimed.
"It's not a curse. Curse means game over," the Doctor told him, "Curse means we're helpless. We are not helpless! Captain, what's our next move?"
"Wait with the boy," Avery said after he placed a pendant around his son's neck
"Captain, we're all in danger here," one of the pirates protested.
"I said wait, and barricade the door after we've gone," Avery added
"Sure you and Rose both want to go?" Amy asked.
"We have to get Rory and Toby away," the Doctor explained, "She's out there now, licking her lips, boiling a saucepan, grating cheese."
"Amy, don't worry about us," Rose told her, "If anything happens to us, we'll just regenerate."
"OK, well remember, if either of you get an itch, don't scratch too hard," Amy told them.
"We've all got to go some time," the Doctor told them, causing Amy, Jack and Rory to exchange as they remembered watching the Doctor and Rose's next incarnation die in Utah, "There are worse ways than having your face snogged off by a dodgy mermaid." He then patted Rory on the shoulder.
The Doctor, Rose and Avery stepped out of the room as Avery put his gun away, "Do either of you want to draw lots for who's in charge, then?"
"Darkness. Demon. You can have first go," the Doctor told him.
"I agree with my husband," Rose said as the Doctor patted Avery on the chest.
They made their way back to the hold as Avery slipped and nearly put his hand down on an exposed nail, but luckily for him, the Doctor grabbed his hand just in time before patted him on the shoulder, "Nearly. Phew!"
The Doctor and Rose ran up to the console while Avery stood by the door.
"By all the…" Avery began to say as he slowly walked towards the console.
"Let me stop you there. Bigger on the inside," the Doctor explained to him.
"And it's basically another dimension," Rose added, "Through a form of science that our people created called Dimensional transcendentalism, which means the inside is bigger than the outside."
"Don't mind, do you, if we just skip to the end of that moment?" The Doctor asked him, "Oh, and sorry I lied by the way, when I said yours was bigger." He then pointed in different directions, "Kitchen that way. Choice of bathrooms - there, there, there."
Back in the magazine, Toby was sitting on the floor, coughing as Amy looked at him.
"What's wrong?" Rory asked her.
"The most beautiful thing you've ever seen," she reminded him.
"Oh, tell me I didn't really say that," Rory begged her.
"I hate to break it to you, Rory, but you did," Jack confirmed
"What's going on?" Amy asked as she noticed the two pirates removing the barrels blocking the door.
"We're not staying here to mollycoddle the boy," one of the pirates answered, "The Captain's gone soft, it's time for us to leave."
The Doctor was typing on the console with Rose using another control when Avery started pointing and touching controls, "What's this do?"
"That does very very complicated. That does sophisticated," the Doctor explained after pointing and rung the bell on the console, "That does whoa, amazing, and that does whizz bang far too technical to explain!"
"Wheel?" Avery asked them as he noticed an object on the console that looked like wheel and an Atom.
"It's actually an atom accelerator," Rose corrected him.
"It steers the thing," Avery surmised.
"No...Sort of...Yes," the Doctor answered.
"Wheel. Telescope. Astrolabe. Compass. A ship's a ship. Oh…" Avery began to say with amazement.
Back in the Magazine, Toby stood up as he began to speak to the pirates, "He told you to wait, you dog. He's your Captain, a Naval Officer. You're honour-bound to do as he tells you."
"'Honour-bound'?" One of the pirates scoffed, "Do you know what kind of ship this is? Do you know what your father does?"
"Don't listen to him, Toby," Amy said as she puts her arm around Toby's shoulders.
"We sail under the black flag," the pirate told him, "The Jolly Roger."
"Liar!" Toby growled as he lunged towards him, "He's no wicked pirate!"
"Oh, you think so?" The pirate asked him, "I've seen your father gun down a thousand innocent men."
"This is how the professionals do it," the Doctor said as he and Rose set the TARDIS in motion but Its machinery groaned and went nowhere.
"It's stuck," Rose explained, "Not responding."
"Becalmed?" Avery asked.
"Mm-hm. Apparently. That's new," the Doctor confirmed.
"That's never happened before," Rose told him, "You had to gloat, didn't you?"
"I'm not gloating," Avery told them.
"We saw that look just now," the Doctor told him, "Ha-ha, their ship is rubbish."
"True," Avery muttered.
"Get what treasure you can, I'll meet you in the row boat," one of the pirates told another pirate in the magazine.
"You're going to remain at your post," Toby ordered the pirate as he walked towards him and pointed a sword at him.
"I am not playing games with you boy, you put that down," the pirate told him.
"One more step and I'll use this, you blackguard," Toby told the pirate.
"You don't know how to fight with a cutlass, boy," the pirate told him.
"Don't need to, do I?" Toby told him as he lunged forward and cut the pirate on the hand.
"Ah!" The pirate said as he began to breathe heavily, "No…"
Back in the TARDIS, the Doctor checked the controls with Rose helping him, "It can't get a lock on the plane."
"The what?" Avery asked them.
"The space we travel in. The... ocean. Sort of ocean but not water. The TARDIS can't see. It's sulking because it thinks the space doesn't exist. Without a plane to lock onto we're not going anywhere," the Doctor explained.
"I'm confused," Avery told them.
"I would be too, if I was human," Rose muttered.
"It's a big club. We should get T-shirts," the Doctor told him before there was an explosion and a rumbling sound, "What's happening?"
"You little swabber!" The pirate that Toby stabbed yelled as he turned his palm over to reveal that he now had a black spot as well.
"Congratulations. Made it to the menu," Amy told him, "Probably shouldn't go out there now."
"You scurvy ape," the pirate said as he pulled out his pistol.
"Don't shoot! The powder will blow and kill us all," Jack ordered him, "Well everyone except me due to my immortality."
The other pirate then took the key ring from the other pirate's belt.
"Mulligan, what are you doing?" The pirate asked as the other pirate left the room.
"No honour among pirates," Amy muttered as the pirate lowered his gun and began to pile the barrels back in front of the door.
"OK. She's had her little sulk. Now she's heading for the full-on screaming tantrum," the Doctor said as he and Rose frantically worked on the TARDIS's controls.
"Can either of you fix it?" Avery asked them.
"The parametric engines are jammed," Rose told him, "Orthogonal vector's gone. We're almost out of ideas."
"Almost?" Avery asked them.
"Well, we could try stroking her and singing her a song," the Doctor told him.
"Will that help?" Avery asked them.
"Doubt it," Rose answered.
"Hard to say, never has before," the Doctor said at the same time as he flipped a switch in the hopes of regaining control but it didn't work as the TARDIS rocked, "Argh! we've lost control of her, she's about to dematerialise we could end up anywhere!"
"That sounds bad," Avery muttered.
"It is," Rose answered.
"Yes, it is! Out! Now! Abandon ship! ABANDON SHIP!" The Doctor said as he grabbed Rose's hand and AVery as he pushed him out the door as the console began to explode, shooting sparks.
As the Doctor, Rose and Avery ran out of the TARDIS and as far from her as possible in the cramped space before they turned around to see the TARDIS enveloped in a green light as it disappeared.
"Someone just nicked our motor," Rose muttered.
"Eh?" Avery asked.
"It's complicated to explain," Rose told him, "Just think of a ship that needs engines."
"OK, OK, OK. TARDIS runs off on its own. That's a bit of a new one," the Doctor muttered, "Bang goes our only hope of getting them out of here."
"Not much of a Captain without a ship, are you?" Avery asked the Doctor as the three of them
began to head back to the magazine but were stopped by Mulligan who held two pistols on them as he was also carrying treasure, a crown around his arm.
"Mulligan? What are you doing? This is mutiny," Avery told the pirate.
"She doesn't want me. She only wants Toby and the scrawny looking fellow," Mulligan said as he ran off.
"He's got the last of the supplies. We should go after him," the Doctor told them.
"Never mind the damned supplies," Avery told him, "What about my treasure?"
"The supplies are more important than your treasure," Rose told him as she, Avery and the Doctor followed Mulligan, who fired but they took cover.
"Don't get injured. Don't get injured," the Doctor warned Avery as they chased Mulligan back to the hold before he locked the door behind him. Using a flint, he lit a fire in a small hand-held paddle before dropping it when the flames burned his hand.
"Come out of there you mutinous dog!" Avery ordered from outside the door as Mulligan burnt his hand and dropped the paddle, leaving him in darkness.
"Ow!" Mulligan cried as the Doctor used his sonic screwdriver on the lock as they heard the Siren singing. The Doctor, Rose and Avery then began checking each other for injury, to find that none of them had any injury. They then looked at the door and saw green light through the cracks.
"She's inside," the Doctor muttered.
"She's come for Mulligan," Avery added.
"Possibly from burning his hand," Rose surmised as Mulligan screamed as the Doctor finally opened the door.
They then enter the room and found it empty as Rose took out her sonic screwdriver and scanned the room with it as Avery grabbed the crown.
"No water in here. How did she take him?" Avery asked with confusion, "Doctor, You said she uses water like a door. That's how she enters a room."
The Doctor looked at the highly-polished crown.
"Are you thinking what I'm thinking, Doctor?" Rose asked her husband.
"I am, Rose," he answered before speaking to Avery, "I was wrong. Please ignore all my theories up to this point."
"What, again!?" Avery asked him.
"We're all in danger. The water's not how she's getting in," he told her, "When we were down in the hold, think what happened. You, us, Jack, Amy, Rory, leeches."
"She sprang from the water," Avery answered.
"Not just any water," Rose told him.
"Rose is right, only when it grew still! Still water. Nature's mirror," the Doctor said, agreeing with Rose.
"So... You both mean?" Avery asked.
"Yes. Not water... Reflection," the Doctor answered.
Back in the magazine, as Toby sat on the floor, he took the pendant from around his neck and began to rub it.
"The siren legend. The curse," the Doctor muttered.
"You said curses weren't real," Avery told him.
"No, but legends do tend to have some truth to them sometimes," Rose told him, "She attacks ships filled with treasure. Where else do you get a perfect reflection?"
"Polished metal," Avery answered.
"Hmm," the Doctor said as he put the crown away in a bag as Avery automatically reached for the pendant before realizing that It wasn't there.
"We must warn them," Avery told them.
Back in the magazine, Toby was now using a cloth to polish the metal.
The Doctor, Rose and Avery then hurried back to the magazine as they reached the door.
"Amy!" The Doctor yelled.
"Jack!" Rose yelled at the same time.
"Open the door!" Both Gallifreyans yelled at the same time
"Toby open the door!" Avery yelled as Amy, Jack and Rory removed the barrels, "Toby!"
"Open the door!" The Doctor and Rose both yelled.
"Toby!" Avery yelled as Amy, Jack and Rory opened the door as the Doctor pushed his way through and grabbed the pendant from Toby and began breathing heavily on it to fog the surface. Amy, Jack and Rory all just stared at him as he gave a thumbs-up as Avery relaxed as both Gallifreyans then ran out the door.
In the cabin, both the Doctor and Rose grabbed two rifles and used the butts of the rifles, and began to use them to smash the small panes of glass that make up the aft window.
"We've got to destroy every reflection. Gold, silver, glass. She could spring from any of them," the Doctor explained as he and Rose continued to smash the windows, "Oh, yes, yes, I know I know. Very bad luck to break it. But look at it this way, there's a stroppy homicidal mermaid trying to kill all."
"How much worse can things get?" Avery asked them.
"Yep," the Doctor answered as he looked at treasure in the room, "Help us lug this lot out."
"Where are we taking it?" Avery asked.
"The ocean," Rose answered.
"No. No! This is the treasure of the Mogul of India," Avery protested.
"Oh, good. For a moment there I thought it was yours," the Doctor muttered, sarcastically.
"Doctor, Rose, wait. Must we do this?" Avery asked both Gallifreyans.
"Any reflection, any mirror, and the siren will attack. We have to protect Rory and Toby. Go and get the crown from the storeroom," the Doctor explained as left the room as the Doctor and Rose began to throw the treasure out the broken window.
With a sigh in the ship's storeroom, Avery took the crown and left the room.
A slight breeze moves the dangling shells and charms and the full moon shines down as the Siren sings her song.
"Just wait?" Rory asked after the Doctor, Rose and Avery returned to the magazine.
"Not my most dynamic plan, I realise," the Doctor told him.
"I'll say," Rose muttered.
"TARDIS?" Amy asked.
"It's been towed," the Doctor answered.
"What?" Jack asked with disbelief, "What about the Extrapolator shielding?"
"Jack, when we regenerated, our regeneration energy must have destroyed it," Rose explained.
"Sorry. We might be stuck here for a while," the DOctor told them.
"So you're saying that we should all just wait here below?" Rory asked them.
"The sea is still calm, like a mirror," Avery told him, "If you go out on deck she'll rise up and attack you."
"It's OK. The calm won't last forever," the Doctor told him, "When the wind picks up we'll all set sail."
"Until it does, you have to hide down here," Avery added.

Should blood affect Jack when he, the Doctor, Amy, Rose and Avery cut their hands in the next chapter?
