In, out, in, out, in, out, the sound of the intubation was lulling Sylvie to sleep, she could feel her eyes starting to droop and she wanted nothing more to give into the sleep that was begging to take over but she was afraid something would happen if she didn't keep his eyes on him at all times. It had been two days and he still hadn't woken up, the doctors assured her it was normal and that he would wake on his own when he was ready.
Sylvie heard a knock at the door and turned her eyes to meet the matching blue ones at the door "Hey Jay" she smiled at him. "I'm here to give you a break" Sylvie shook her head declining the offer. "I'm okay, I promise".
Jay looked at her skeptically, "Fine, I'm going to keep you company" he pulled up the chair next to her. "I've had lots of company, you don't have to stay" she didn't want anyone else there out of pity of her, she really just wanted to be left alone but she knew these were his friends and family and they were worried also.
"I think Kim's scared to come see him" Jay stared at Antonio as he spoke, "She's working around the clock, she hasn't slept, we're all worried about her." Sylvie shifted in her chair, her and Kim had never really been on the same page when it came to Antonio and she knew Kim blamed her for a lot of what happened. "She probably doesn't want to see me, I know she'll blame me, hell even I blame me."
"No one blames you, it was a burglary, it wasn't your fault."
"But if I wouldn't have asked him to hangout then he wouldn't have been there" Jay could see the sadness in her eyes and knew she didn't deserve it, she was one of the kindest people he knew. "And if he hadn't been there then you and the kids could have been there alone and he would never forgive himself if something had happened to you guys, this is how he would want it. Trust me, I feel the same about Erin and Madison, we might not be together but that's my family and I would die for either of them, just like he would for his kids…and you."
Sylvie wanted to talk about anything but this, "Tell Kim I'm leaving for a little bit this evening and she can come up then, I think Gabby will be here too." She leaned forward and grabbed Antonio's hand squeezing it while praying she would feel him squeeze back but his hand remained motionless as usual.
"She doesn't hate you, she just doesn't know what to do with you and she has Gabby in her ear, remember when you were all friends, life was so much simpler back then." Jay chuckled.
"Yeah back before we all decided to complicate the hell out of our lives, back when I thought he and I were going to be together forever but…" Sylvie went quiet the words never really being able to leave her mouth.
"He cheated." She looked at Jay and he nodded, "I'm the one who made him tell you, I thought you deserved better than a lie." He shrugged knowing she probably never knew it was him who had caught Antonio. "He's a good guy who made a huge mistake that he's more than paid for."
"He has, he made a promise to take care of us and he always has even when it meant sacrificing his pride and watching Abbie be so close with Matt, he has always taken the high road so she would be happy."
"Dammit, why can't he just wake up?" she huffed and pushed her back into the chair frustrated with the lack of progress and the conversation. "Can we talk about literally anything else please?"
"Maddie's been threatening to riot if she doesn't get to spend the night with Jackson soon." He laughed. "How about I send him to spend the night at your house and you can deal with the little monsters?" she chuckled grateful to have someone there to lighten the mood.
Sylvie stared at the large red stain in the middle of floor, she hadn't been home since that night and truth be told she didn't want to be here now but she needed clothes and to shower and she needed to face this sooner or later.
She was startled out of her thoughts by a knock at the door, she peeked through the peep hole curious as to who it could be. She pulled the door open, "Hey" she was able to get out before arms wrapped tightly around her threatening to cut off her air supply. Matt pushed her back from him and checked her over, "Matt I'm fine, we already did this at the hospital remember" she pulled herself from his grasp.
"I know, I'm just double checking and I haven't exactly been able to see you the last couple days, how is he today?"
"The same" she sighed as she maneuvered around the stain and toward the kitchen, "I keep praying he will wake up and the doctors are telling me to give it time but what if he doesn't?"
"How many times has he been shot? He's always fine and he will be this time too." he followed her to the kitchen and watched as she started to unload cleaning products from the pantry.
"Are you cleaning that yourself? Sylvie you don't have to."
"I just want it done, I want the kids to be able to come home" She focused all her attention on the task she had set. She couldn't stand the thought of Antonio's blood just continuing to sit on her stairs and floor, she needed the reminder to be gone, she wanted to forget that night had ever happened.
"Do you want me to help?" he could see she was hurting and everything in him wanted to fix it for her but he knew the only thing that would was Antonio waking up, "Just keep me company please, I'm a little freaked out here alone."
He watched as she cleaned and helped when he was needed but he mostly just let her work at it on her own, "So are you guys a thing?" he hated himself for even asking it but it had been on his mind since he found out about the shooting and they had never shied away from telling each other the truth no matter how hard it was to hear.
She stopped mopping and shook her head, "No we're just friends, same as we've always been" Matt stared at her a moment trying to decide if she was telling the truth or not, "But you love him, the way you could never love me."
Sylvie closed her eyes not wanting Matt to see the truth, she didn't want to hurt him, "You know the history, you knew it going into this." She sat on the stairs trying to keep her emotions at bay, if she started crying now she feared she would never stop.
"I do but it doesn't make me blind to what's been going on the past year, he's always loved you and you're the one who stops it from going forward and I think it's because you're scared of how I will react so I'm setting you free, he's not the same guy he was back then, he's more than proved himself."
"Matt.." Sylvie started, "No, I mean it, I'm fine. I've tried to make it right with Gabby but she doesn't care so I've decided I need to stop making the wrong decisions and do something that's right for once and that means letting you finally be happy with who you were meant to be with all along, we're still family that isn't changing and I do love you but it's not the right type of love."
She felt the buzzing of her phone vibrating in her pocket, "Hello?" she answered not recognizing the number. "Gabby? What's wrong? Okay, I'm on my way." She hung up the phone and stared in disbelief at Matt.
"What's the matter?" Matt was worried by the look on Sylvie's face, "He's awake" her look of disbelief breaking into a smile as relief rushed over her.
