Holly was stunned when she found Captain Jack Harkness lying on the ground outside where the TARDIS had landed. Holly took one look at the Doctor before running after Martha to see if Jack was okay. The Doctor rolled his eyes when he saw her look at him.
Martha looks at Holly and motions for her to help. "Can you feel a pulse?"
Holly presses her fingers on his wrist. Geez, this was weird, she thought as she looked back and forth at the Doctor and Martha, wondering if the Doctor could hear her. The Doctor looks straight at her as she says to Martha, "no pulse."
Just wondering... was that you that spoke about wondering if I could hear you? thinks the Doctor in her mind. Martha tells them she's going to get a kit. As Martha's out of sight, Holly comes back up to the Doctor.
"You could hear me," she says. "Is that a Time Lord and Time Lady thing?"
"Yes. Telepathic communication was very common, but only to some. Like I, for instance, have that ability."
"So I do too," says Holly. The Doctor gives a small smile.
"So that's Harkness? Why did you not let him in the TARDIS?"
"I assume you know," he says just as Martha comes back out with her doctor kit. Holly shakes her head.
"No. I don't."
"Here we go. Get out of the way. It's a bit odd, though. Not very hundred trillion. That coat's more like World War Two," she says, pushing Holly out of the way, making her hit the Doctor. They both stumble back because they were already so close to each other. He lands on the floor with a thud, Holly crashing on top of him. She groans as he pushes her off him, and they both stand up as soon as they hear Jack moving. Well, Holly was struggling to get to her feet and the Doctor reaches his hand out for her to grab. She feels how warm it is.
"Your hand —" starts saying as Martha finishes screaming, but is interrupted by Jack introducing himself.
"Oh, so much for me. It's all right. Just breathe deep. I've got you," Martha says as Jack breathes heavily. Holly rushes to help, and he looks at her confused.
"Captain Jack Harkness. Who are you two good-looking ladies?"
Holly blushes. "Holly Morgan, and this is —"
"Martha Jones."
Holly and Martha share a smile.
"Nice to meet you, Holly Morgan and Martha Jones," he smiles back at the two.
"Oh don't start," the Doctor groans, making Holly giggle. Jack smiled at her before glaring at the Doctor.
"I was only saying hello!" he says.
"I don't mind," Martha comments. Holly smiles.
"I don't either."
Don't you start either, the Doctor transmits. Holly smiles once more.
When you don't get all jealous I'll stop, she adds, making him frown as Jack starts to talk.
"Doctor," he greets.
"Captain," the Doctor says.
"Good to see you."
"And you. Same as ever. Although, have you had work done?"
Liar, transmits Holly. He gives her a look.
"You can talk," Jack looks him up and down.
As all this is going on, Holly couldn't help but think what Scarlett would say when she learned that Holly met Captain Jack Harkness. Same with Leila and Nathaniel. Who knows about Neil, she thinks. Maybe she and Neil will become best friends in the future like the rest of them? That's probably why he was gone throughout the Doctor's timeline.
"Just got to ask. The Battle of Canary Wharf. I saw the list of the dead. It said Rose Tyler," Jack says, making Holly perk up.
"Oh, no! Sorry, she's alive," The Doctor says. Holly smiles again.
"I was wondering what happened to her! I didn't see her anywhere when I first arrived in the TARDIS," she says. Jack looks confused.
"You knew her?" He says. Holly blushes.
"It's complicated... and a long story. I will tell you about it in the end."
"Oh, are you one of Leila's friends? Ah, Holly! I knew I heard of you before. Leila was so excited to tell me all about you. You're from that parallel world with the television show!"
"That's right!"
"Television show?" Martha repeated.
"Again... long story," Holly replied. The Doctor rolls his eyes, then smiles as Jack says to him, "but you're kidding, right?"
"She's in a parallel world. Safe and sound," he says, Jack's smile is wider. "And Mickey, and her mother."
"Oh, yes!"
Jack gets up to hug the Doctor. Holly eyes him and transmits, I'm so not letting you down for this. He glares at her, his smile fading. Holly hears the sound of Martha saying, "Good old Rose."
"Oh, come here you!" Jack wraps his other arm around Holly. "You're one of us now!"
"I guess I am!" she giggles. "Though I didn't ask to be here."
"What do you mean?" Jack says as he pulls away from the two.
"I don't know what happened, but I just randomly showed up here after my best friend Nathaniel put some kind of equipment on my arm. Obviously it's gone now. I arrived underneath the TARDIS's console."
"That's weird. And Nathaniel? Isn't he one of the friends that Leila mentioned before she left and actually helped me on my way?"
Oh Doctor, Holly looks down, disappointed as they all start walking.
"Yes. He is. And I'm going to kill him whenever I see him. I also want to meet this Neil guy everyone is talking about. So what happened to you, Jack?"
He starts telling the story.
"So there I was, stranded in the year two hundred one hundred, ankle deep in Dalek dust, and he goes off without me. But I had this," he shows a bracelet. One like Scarlett's, "I used to be a Time Agent. It's called a vortex manipulator. He's not the only one who can time travel. That's where Leila, Nathaniel, that Neil guy, and what was the other one...?"
"Scarlett Lucas. Surprised you can remember."
"Yes. That's the one. That's where they all come in. Though if I remember correctly Scarlett didn't have a vortex manipulator: she is connected to your timelines."
"That's correct," the Doctor says.
"Anyway, I thought 21st century, the best place to find the Doctor, except that I got it a little wrong. Arrived in 1869, this thing burnt out, so it was useless."
"Told you," says the Doctor. Holly rolls her eyes at him.
"I had to live through the entire twentieth century waiting for a version of you that would coincide with me. With visits from Neil every once in a while, which was nice, but he told me I had to do that and not mess with the timeline."
"But that makes you more than one hundred years old," Martha comments, which makes Holly realize that.
"And looking good, don't you think? So I went to the time rift, based myself there because I knew you'd come back to refuel. Until finally I get a signal on this detecting you and here we are."
"But the thing is, how come you left him behind, Doctor?" Martha asks the Doctor. Holly looks at him as he looks at her.
"I was busy," he says plainly. Holly rolls her eyes and transmits, yeah. 'Busy.'
"Is that what happens, though, seriously? Do you just get bored with us one day and disappear?"
"Not if you're blonde. Sorry Holly. Looks like you're going to be stuck with him for a while. I can already tell by the way he—"
"So she was blonde? What a surprise! And I could totally tell by the way he remembered her when Scarlett showed up a few hours ago."
"You three! We're at the end of the universe, all right? Right at the edge of knowledge itself and you're busy blogging! Come on," the Doctor says, clearly annoyed. Martha and Holly roll their eyes in sync. Holly turns to look at what the other three are looking at. They look down over a cliff onto a high tech construction of some kind.
"Is that a city?" Asks Martha.
"A city or a hive, or a nest, or a conglomeration. Like it was grown. But look, there. That's like pathways, roads? Must have been some sort of life, long ago."
"What killed it?" Asks Holly.
"Time. Just time. Everything's dying now. All the great civilizations have gone. This isn't just night. All the stars have burned up and faded away into nothing," the Doctor adds.
"They must have an atmospheric shell. We should be frozen to death," Jack says, totally lighting up the mood.
"That just made me a happy-sunshine girl," says Holly, shaking her head.
"Well, Martha, Holly and I, maybe. Not so sure about you, Jack." The Doctor and Jack share a look, and Holly watches.
"What about the people? Does no one survive?" Martha asks.
"I suppose we have to hope life will find a way."
"Well, he's not doing too bad."
"Human!" shouts a man running through the city, pursued by the tribe.
"Is it me, or does that look like a hunt? Come on!"
The Doctor grabs Holly's hand and has her run along with them to help. We are in deep trouble, Holly thinks. Never in a million — or trillion, as she would say, years she would think of doing this. Being at the end of the universe with the Doctor. She hoped everything would be okay in the end, but with the way things were looking, they weren't going to be. As the minutes rolled by, Holly was beginning to lose hope. She wished her best friends were here to witness this. Someday she will see them. Someday.
