"A Moment that made you Angry"
"The darkness has not been conquered, and it will continue to fight against the light forever, but as long as people remember to follow their dreams, evil will be kept at bay.
"And on days like today, it's hard to see any darkness anywhere. Now it's up to our children, and to children everywhere, to follow their dreams. Who knows where they'll end up, but the only way to find out is to take that first step into adventure."
"So, what do you think?"
TK didn't have the words to respond, at first only being able stare back across the cafeteria table. On the other side, Davis eagerly waited to hear how his "pitch" had been received. Eventually, it became clear that the silence between them had gone on for a bit too long.
"Davis..." TK began delicately. "I have no idea what you just described to me."
"It's the happy ending your story needs!" Davis punctuated his declaration by slamming his fist down on the table.
The previous day, casual conversation had led to TK mentioning the idea of writing a novelization of the various adventures of the Digidestined. Having wrongly assumed that Davis hadn't been paying attention, the last thing TK had been expecting was to have an epilogue for their adventures described to him. In retrospect, though, Davis never did anything halfway.
"Yes, I got that." TK paused for half a second to let his eyes fall down to his lunch before looking upwards again. "I'm just a little confused about the particulars."
Davis tilted his head. "Which particulars?"
TK paused again, needing to decide where to begin. "For starters, you sent my brother to Mars."
"What's wrong with that?"
TK took a deep breath, calming himself. "He's never once shown any interest in being an astronaut."
Davis crossed his arms and kept a straight and confident face. "Look, I know a lot of these choices might seem weird on the surface, but I actually put a lot of thought into them."
"Does that include making Yolei a housewife?"
Davis' eye twitched. "Being a mom is an incredibly important and rewarding job. I'm sure Yolei would agree."
Sensing his friend's hesitation, TK pulled out his D-Terminal. "Let's text her and ask if she agrees."
Davis instantly stretched across the table and snatched the device from TK's fingers. "Or maybe some of my ideas could use a second pass!"
They both went quiet for a couple seconds after that, with TK taking a second to look Davis over. His previous conviction seemed to have dissipated, and not just because he was afraid of Yolei. Getting older came with a lot of uncertainty, and even Davis' confidence wasn't immune to worrying about the future. They all felt this way at one point or another, and because of this, TK was willing to give one conceit.
"Okay, Davis," TK said calmly. "If the day does ever come that I write about our adventures, as long as you promise to never bring this up again, I will give your character a noodle cart."
Davis' whole face lit up. "Okay, Deal!"
"Great!" TK refocused on his lunch. "Since that's settled-"
"Actually," Davis interrupted as he pulled out a notebook. "I had another idea to run by you. This one involves a ramen shop owner during the zombie apocalypse..."
TK sighed. Among his regrets in life, his biggest in this moment was telling Davis Motomiya about his dream of becoming a novelist.
Author's Note:
Is this a gag chapter, or is the implication that Davis willed the 02 epilogue into existence? Open to your interpretation...
