Okay, peeps, let's do this thing. And, a word of warning: You are going to hate me for this. So without further ado, I give you chapter 19 while I take a massive step THAT way.

Disclaimer: I don't own them. Lucky them.

Chapter 19: In the Dark

Bullet Bills descended upon towns across the planet. Each Bill boasted the same green skull emblem, and each released the same sulfur-yellow fumes in their wake. They went to every nook and cranny they could find. When the Bills couldn't find any more spaces outside, they smashed through windows, doors, and any other entrance available.

However, while their aftermath was devastating, they did not attack anyone. In fact, they avoided civilians and animals alike. They simply chose a path and went on it. When they finished with their path across a town, village, or city, the Bills moved on to the next.

As the Bills left their towns, the same question went through the residents' minds.

Why?

*J*J*J*J*J*J*J*J*J*J*J*J*J*J*J*J*J*J*J*

Nothing but darkness, all around him. He paced the floor, but there was no ground beneath his feet. He rubbed his wrists, disturbed by the fact that he felt restraints on them, but there was nothing there. It was ironic, such a powerful being demonstrating such anxiety.

A window of sorts opened that created a stark contrast to the void, showing the world just beyond his prison. Based on first-hand experience, he knew he couldn't jump through portal to freedom. It only existed because his captor used it to show him its progress.

It. Not him or he. His captor didn't deserve the honor of being recognized as that.

He watched what it showed him this time.

Bullet Bills. Peculiar ones at that. But he recognized them. His captor had shown them to him prior to sending them out. Complete with an explanation of their function.

He noticed that the Bills' set paths had three major traffic hotspots: Toad Town, Petalburg, and Big Ape City. He growled and clenched his fist.

I should have known this would happen someday. Why didn't I do anything?!

"Because you thought you could suppress me forever."

He whirled around and threw a punch. Its hand was perfectly positioned to easily catch his giant fist before he had even turned.

"You know that wouldn't have worked even if it landed."

It squeezed his fist. Hard. His knees buckled under the pain. After a few agonizing seconds, it let go.

He glared daggers at his adversary. "What do you want!?" he spat, although he could easily predict the answer.

"Yes, you could," it said, chuckling. The chuckle sounded like his own, but somehow… off. It still made him want to throw up. "But regardless, I just wanted to make sure you saw the progress my Necro Bills were making."

He growled loudly.

It laughed just as loudly. "I really do enjoy being your enemy. No one can read you quite like I can."

"The Stars will stop you. We will win."

It shook its head and sighed. "You fool. Your precious Stars can't save you. Not this time. And your little treasures will be in their right place: in my control. Except for that ONE. She might think she protected her brat from my influence, but that just means I can have at least one casualty."

This was unexpected. His eyes widened. "What do you mean?"

It turned to leave. "You'll see. The next phase of the plan will ensure that your precious Stars can't interfere." It started walking out.

He started after it, but his wrists snagged on his invisible restraints. He pulled as hard as he could, but to no avail.

"WAIT!" he called out after it. "That's not what I was talking about! What are you going to do with—"

It vanished, leaving his question unanswered.

He looked back towards the window. The Necro Bills had finished their assignment. They soared high into the sky and exploded one by one. He sent a wish to the Stars, hoping against hope that it would transcend the barrier between him and the world beyond.

Give them strength...
