Chapter 13: Fury
Amy rolls over, dreading that the squeaking sound of the bed will disturb Rory who is sound asleep next to her. Despite his promise to stay awake, the redhead was glad that he was able to rest a little bit with his arm wrapped around her. It made her feel safer when he held her so close.
It's not that she'd been able to get much sleep anyways and it wasn't just because the bed was old, uncomfortable, and creaked every time either of them moved. The mattress hadn't been updated since the 1980s… or so she assumed. While she'd travelled through many time periods with the Doctor, she still could not fully tell when something was from. While the décor of the room was old, she wasn't sure of what decade this place was built and decorated. It felt older than it was.
She gazes at the lamp on the bedside table and towards the window, with bluish-green curtains concealing the morning light. It was gray outside, meaning that morning had finally arrived, and they could leave this weird town. Her night consisted of mostly closing her eyes, nodding off, waking up, rolling over and closing her eyes again. Sadly, her fear prevented her mind from calming down enough to sleep restfully. This place has a secret and while the Doctor seemed desperate to figure it out, Amy knew that all of them should just leave. Not a particularly exciting adventure, but this place was far from safe.
Rory snores softly, so Amy takes a moment to slowly push back the covers and get up. She goes to the bathroom, another outdated eyesore and checks herself in the mirror. There are dark circles under her eyes and her flaming red hair is a mess. Thank goodness she had reduced her work as a model. The pressures of having to appear beautiful all the time were arduous, and annoying, and took a toll on her mind. She was glad to be a journalist now and free to appear how she wanted.
Exiting the loo, she gazes at Rory for another few moments, deciding to let him sleep a little longer before the three of them leave.
How did she become so lucky to have met Rory? A man who only ever thought of her, who fell in love with her at such a young age, who waited 2000 years for her, and who would devote the rest of his life to making her happy. She sometimes wondered if she deserved him; someone so brave and selfless… she loved his stupid face so much.
Amy slips into the hallway. The sounds of the diner are heard in the distance; the clanking of silverware on dishes, voices chatting with each other, food frying, ovens beeping, and a bell announcing the orders. It wasn't hard to hear this as the motel part of this Granny's restaurant was dead quiet. Nothing to be heard.
She walks to the next room and knocks on his door.
"Doctor?"
She waits.
"Doctor, are you awake?"
Not even a sound or any kind of response.
"Raggedy Man?"
Worried, Amy tries the knob. She finds the door unlocked and her heart sinks a little into her stomach. Inside, the bed and room remain untouched, and a chill is coming from the open window across from where she's standing.
"Oh…no!" she gasps, racing to the window.
She gazes out into the town below. The place was alive with people and cars navigating the town… as normal as can be. Anger fills Amy as she knows that something has happened to the Doctor, what that was, she was going to find out!
They should've just left!
A million possibilities of what happened to her best friend race through her mind. Had he been captured? Was he being held somewhere? Was he being experimented on? Would he be sold to the American government? All of it made her fear that she and Rory would be next.
Amy storms down the stairs and pushes through the doors connecting the bed and breakfast to the main diner.
People are sitting in booths and at the counter of the restaurant chatting, eating, and drinking coffee… so normal.
Some people notice the woman who is now fuming at the back entrance of Granny's.
"OY!" she barks at the patrons in the restaurant. "What did you do to 'im?!"
The people of Storybrooke look at the feisty redheaded stranger in confusion, annoyance, and general fear. This woman whom they'd never seen before is standing there yelling and asking them where "him" was… Who was she? Where had she come from? Was she the cause of the damage last night?
"Who's him?" a man from one of the booths asks. He sits with a blonde woman and a young little girl in pigtails.
"The Doctor! Where is he?!"
"Doctor Who? Doctor Whale? He's at the hospital," a woman dressed in modest religious-looking garments, complete with a cross around her neck replies.
"No not 'im… The Doctor… the man who stayed here last night," she snarls.
The citizens of Storybrooke just look confused.
A brave waitress goes up to the woman and tries to calm her down.
"This Doctor person, whoever you're waiting for, I'm sure he'll be right back. Can I offer you some coffee while you wait?"
"Don't give me that routine!" the redhead continues very loudly. "You're all in on it aren't you?!" She glares at all of them.
"Wha-?" the waitress begins to say.
"You're all a part of the sham huh? The grand conspiracy?! I know that there is something wrong with this town and that you lot were all hiding something. While I was perfectly happy to leave without questioning it, the minute you take away the Doctor, is when you sign yourself up to have everything stripped away!"
The diner is completely silent, except for the little girl in the booth, who begins to sniffle in fear at this whole thing. The blonde woman takes her daughter into her arms and comforts her, shooting dirty looks at this strange and crazy woman.
"Are you threatening us Sister?"
Amy looks over to the counter and recognizes the bearded man in the plaid shirt from the night before who threatened them with a pickaxe.
"I wouldn't have to if you didn't take the Doctor like that."
"Like what? Look, Sister, we didn't take him and why would we? We want nothing to do with you or your alien freak."
"DON'T CALL HIM THAT!" Amy snaps.
"Why? It's the truth. Which reminds me…" he turns to the crowd around him. "Hey everyone, the person she's talking about is an actual alien," the bearded man announces out loud to everyone. "That's right, Aliens have landed in Storybrooke."
There are gasps, whispers, and looks of horror while eyes remain glued on Amy. The noise that arises becomes more aggressive and frightening, a lot of now directed at the woman accusing them of taking a doctor.
At that moment, Rory comes through the doors and nearly walks into his wife. He can sense the tension in the room immediately, and there are more gasps as another stranger has revealed himself to them. Everyone in town is beyond bewildered and just wants the room to stop spinning. Why can't they just enjoy breakfast and coffee in peace?
The former Roman had woken up to find his wife's side of the bed empty and when he heard the yelling downstairs he bolted out of bed and down to her. He recognized her loud and aggressive Scottish accent and worried that Amy was either in danger or about to fight somebody. He hadn't even thought of the Doctor until he entered the room, where the bearded man revealed everything in front of the population of this town.
"And here's her husband," the short man smirks. "Welcome to the E.T.s. The couple from the flying saucer."
"Amy…" Rory whispers. "What did you do?"
The man in the booth across the restaurant stands up and moves in front of his wife and frightened daughter, butterknife in hand and prepared to protect them from this alien threat. Other people either attempt to hide or just sit and stare in total shock.
Just then, a familiar patch of blonde hair above a red leather jacket can be seen through the windows, along with a tall figure dressed in all black. This gets the redhead fired up and she walks directly across the restaurant and pushes open the doors with such force that the bell has no time to ring. Rory hurries after his wife, worried she might do something rash.
Emma and Killian stand at one of the picnic tables, holding each other close in preparation for going inside to order breakfast.
However, the blissful mood changes as Amelia Pond approaches them, seeing red.
"OY! YOU!" she shouts at them, heading directly to Emma.
Killian instinctively stands in front of his pregnant wife to protect her but keeps his hand in his pocket to avoid revealing his hook and making things a million times worse.
Fortunately, Rory catches up to Amy and grabs the sleeve of her shirt to keep her from going over and throttling these people.
"Amy don't," Rory says.
"DON'T HIDE FROM ME! WHERE IS HE?" she screams, fighting against her husband's hold on her sleeve.
"Where is who?" Emma asks, peering around Killian in confusion and little fear.
"YOU KNOW WHO!"
"Back off," Killian warns in an almost growl. "Way off."
"Don't threaten my wife," Rory warns angrily, worried that this man might hurt them. He steps in front of Amy to protect her. However, she refuses to be held back.
"Well then don't threaten my pregnant one," the pirate replies.
This revelation causes Amy to stop fighting and look at the blonde. While it was barely noticeable, there was a bump and swelling to the blonde woman's shirt, indicating pregnancy. She realizes that she can't attack a pregnant woman and needs to calm down a bit more to get them out of this situation.
She takes a step back. "You're right. I'm sorry… I just want to know what you did to the Doctor."
"Isn't he upstairs?" Emma asks.
"Don't give us that. We know you took 'im. Probably going to sell him to the government so they can do their experiments."
"We don't know what you're talking about," the dark-haired man, hand still in his pocket, answers. It concerns both outsiders that the deputy has some kind of weapon concealed in there.
"Then how come his room's empty and the window is open."
"How the hell should we know?" the blonde retorts. "We haven't seen him since we dropped the three of you off last night."
Amy grinds her teeth, wanting to believe that these people are lying and that they have horrible intentions for all of them, but the redhead can see the genuine confusion on the couple's faces. She's battling tears in her eyes while trying to remain restrained.
"And you're sure you haven't seen him?" Rory asks.
"Mate, after we dropped you off, Emma and I went home to sleep. We just drove up here for breakfast."
"Then where is he?" Amy asks.
"I don't know!" Emma says in frustration. "Did he wander off? Is that something he'd do?"
The couple from the TARDIS look at one another, knowing that would be exactly what the Doctor would do.
"Yes…" the Scottish woman admits.
"Well then, we'll help you find him," the sheriff answers. While Emma wanted these people gone from town as soon as possible, the fact that the alien one of the group has now disappeared makes it ten times worse. This could mean a million things… invasion… harvesting… They needed to find this Doctor as soon as possible.
Suddenly, the ground begins to shake violently, nearly knocking all four people off their feet. Killian instinctively rushes to Emma and wraps his arms around her before grabbing the nearby table for support. However, doing this for the sake of his wife and unborn child has revealed his missing limb and the shiny instrument that now stood in its place. Amy and Rory struggle to remain upright and also go for the same picnic table. They end up on their knees, holding the seat to stay in one place.
When the shaking stops, both outsiders see the hook on the end of the man's hand and their hearts go into overdrive about what this means. They try to recover from the motion and gather themselves, grasping each other's hands tightly for support as the rest of the whole world erupts into chaos. Car alarms go off in the streets, people are screaming, crying and running for cover, phones are going off and various other objects fall from their places. It's a massive wall of noise that no one can respond to…yet.
Though, none of them will have time to react as they're hit with another violent shaking. This time, a new sound follows it… the sound of the earth rupturing beneath them.
A large crack forms in the middle of the street in front of the diner and something is glowing from beneath the asphalt. The sound of a roar is heard as something seems to want to emerge from the depths of Storybrooke.
