Olivia felt her body tense as she entered the empty room. All she had to do was wait. Although, waiting seemed like the hardest part. A million questions swirled around in her head. She was having a hard time finding one to grasp onto. She and Elliot had been a part a little under five years. She wasn't quite sure how things were going to go between them.
When she noticed a tall form making it's way into the room she picked up on the gate she had grown to know over the years instantly. She braced herself. Things were different now she reminded herself. She had changed since he had been gone. She had become stronger. More independent. She had to learn how to do things on her own without relying on someone other than herself. But had he changed, too? She knew he must have.
That thought quickly escaped her mind as a sense of familiarity walked through the door way. She immediately felt tears begin to fall as she launched herself into his arms and wrapped her own arms around him. She didn't even get a good look at him. Instead she threw herself into him. She was surprised it didn't cause him to stumble. It was almost as if he expected it. She felt his grasp tighten around her torso and suddenly everything melted away. All of her thoughts, her fears, and all of the people that were clearly watching them.
"I've missed you," he stated. He buried his face into her neck and took in a deep breath. Her scent was the same as it had always been. He found comfort in that. She was still his Olivia. Olivia could hear the raw emotion in his voice. She used that opportunity to pull back a little bit. She let his arms stay around her waist, but she wanted to see him. She used the pads of her thumbs to wipe away his stray tears and then wiped away a few of her own. She leaned up grabbed his face between her hands and then connected their lips. She needed this connection. He began deepening the kiss. He even bit at her bottom lip in order to ask for more.
While she was enjoying the physicality of it all, something broke her trance and she pulled back. Olivia wasn't claustrophobic by any means, but some how the enclosed space had began to get smaller. She ripped herself out of his grip and sat down in the chair closest to her. The fingers connected to her right hand were dancing over her lips. She glanced up at him to see the confusion the sudden onset of the distance brought.
"We can't just jump in where we left off," Olivia finally stated. He was taken aback and she seemed a million miles away. For the first time in their lives their was a disconnection between them. Olivia let a few stray tears fall.
"Did you meet someone else?" Elliot's voice was almost quiet. She wasn't even sure if he had truly asked the question. She looked up at him to see hurt take over his features. Once she knew he was looking at her she shook her head.
"No, not in the way you are thinking." Olivia gave him a small smile which he returned. "But you have been gone for almost five year, Elliot. I thought you were dead." He nodded as he tried to process her words. He could tell a new set of tears were threatening to fall. He was surprised that she wasn't trying to shove them away.
"I guess I always thought when we were reunited that things would just fall into place, but I guess you are right. They can't." Olivia shook her head.
"As much as I want them to, no." Olivia pushed out the chair beside her and motioned for him to sit down. He hesitated before taking a seat. Olivia adjusted her chair so she could face him and he did the same but towards her. He looked at her and he couldn't believe the difference. She was still beautiful. Hell, she was even prettier that he remembered. A part of him questioned how he was able to stay away so long, but then he remembered the threat made on her life.
His train of thought was broken once her hands grabbed onto his. He could see an internal battle waging behind her brown orbs. She was quiet for a moment. It was like she was trying to find the right words to say to him. "Elliot, I do have something important to tell you, though."
"You can tell me anything, Liv." His brows furrowed. Olivia couldn't help but laugh at how much the gesture reminded her of their daughter. Daughter, right. She was about to tell him about the little girl she had gotten to love for the past four years.
"When you died I was pregnant. I didn't know it yet. I was only about four weeks along," Olivia paused and took in a sharp breath. "But she was the miracle I needed. I shut down after I lost you." Olivia let a tear slip. "Elliot, she is the most amazing little girl. She has your blue eyes and your temper."
"We have a daughter?" Elliot asked. He had tears in his eyes and Olivia couldn't quite tell if they were happy or sad. She nodded though and decided not to dwell on it.
"We have a daughter," she confirmed. She watched as he swiftly stood up out of the chair he was sitting in. He broke all skin to skin contact with her and a part of her felt empty again. "I've missed so much." His hand ran over his face as if he were trying to rub the truth away. "I need to see her," Elliot concluded.
"No, not yet."
"Olivia, she is my daughter."
"She is my daughter to, Elliot. And while you have been God knows where I have been there with her." Olivia raised her voice a little and that quickly shut him right up. He just nodded and let himself fall back into the chair he was previously sitting in. She took in a deep breath and sighed. "It's not that I don't want you to meet her, because I do. It's just that I need to explain a few things to her first. She is going to be so confused, Elliot. The man I have told here was gone all these years suddenly isn't going to be." He nodded as she explained her reasoning.
"You're right. I'm sorry." He grabbed her hands again and squeezed them.
"So yes, as much as I want things to go back to the way they were, they can't. Not for her sake." Olivia gripped on to his hands and tired to reassure him. "I am going to talk to her tonight. Depending on how she reacts or handles the news maybe you can try meeting her in the morning. If you want to get on her good side bring her a toy. She loves Dora."
"What about things with us? Are we going to be okay?"
"I've wanted you back in my life the moment I learned that you were gone. Elliot, I've never put my self out there, I haven't dated anyone, you were -are - it for me. That being said I want us to take things slowly. We don't really know each other anymore. I guess we are just going to have to take some time and figure it all out. Nothing has to be decided today. All I know is that I still love you." She leaned in and kissed him.
"I love you too, Liv," he stated while her lips were still connected to his. She pulled back again and then smiled. He could tell that she was happy. "You know I expected you to be a little mad at me," he laughed out.
"I had to live without you for almost five years and they were so hard, Elliot. I understand why you had to do what you did. It doesn't make it any easier, but how many people get to say they get their loved one back. Not many. I'm more thankful than I am mad. Now our daughter on the other hand is going to be pissed at you."
"I can't wait," he stated with a genuine smile on his face. "You are really going to talk to her tonight?"
"Yes." Olivia bit her bottom lip, "Do you have anywhere to stay?" Elliot nodded.
"Yeah, they are putting me up in a hotel until I can figure out some arrangements."
"This won't be forever, I promise. I just need to make sure we do this right for Eleanore."
"Eleanore," he smiled, "Thats her name?" Olivia smiled back at him and nodded.
"Here are some pictures of her," Olivia handed over the book she decided to bring for him to look at. She watched as his eyes examined every picture. He made sure to analyze even the smallest detail the picture offered.
"She is beautiful. Looks just like you," Olivia nodded.
"She does."
"How are Maureen, Kathleen, Dickie, and Lizzie doing?"
"They are really good. Maureen is a social worker, Kathleen is in college still. She is undecided on her major, but she is figuring it out, and the twins are still in high school. They all pop in from time to time to visit our little Ellie bug. I see Kathleen the most. She loves spending time with her. They have a pretty strong bond."
"I can't wait to see them all. If I didn't think he was capable of hurting all of you I never would have gone along with the FBI's plan." Olivia nodded. She understood. She did. As much as she wanted to be pissed off she couldn't be. He was there right in front of her. Breathing, talking, touching. It was all she could have ever wished for.
"It's getting late, but I don't want to leave," Olivia sighed.
"I'm not going anywhere this time. Go home to our daughter. Talk to her and then hopefully in the morning I can come over and meet her," Olivia nodded. She knew it needed to happen. She wasn't sure how everything was going to play out, but what she did know was that everything was going to be okay. Elliot was back. He was safe. Unharmed. He was hers.
"Mommy!" Eleanore exclaimed as Olivia walked through the front door of their New York apartment. She crouched down and let her daughter run into her arms. She held her tight knowing this was the last time she was going to have her to herself. She wasn't mad at the idea of sharing her, especially since it was with Elliot, but it was going to be an adjustment.
"Hey, Ellie bug." Olivia broke away from the hug and stood up. She thanked Lucy for watching her daughter before the young adult made her exit. "Ellie, how about we get dressed into our favorite pajama's, make some hot coco, and then have a little talk."
"Did I do something bad, mommy?" Eleanore furrowed her eye brows, just like Elliot had done earlier, and then looked up at her mother. It was as if she was questioning herself what she could have done.
"No, you didn't do anything bad. There is just something pretty important we need to discuss." Eleanore looked up quizzically at her mother, but she did as she was told. She ran to her room and grabbed her Dora the explorer pajama dress while Olivia slipped on her favorite red silky pajama shorts and matching top. Olivia also washed off the makeup she had applied to her face earlier before making her way to the kitchen.
By the time Olivia was done making the hot coco Eleanore was just coming out of her room. Olivia was sure that the four year old got distracted by a few toys while she was getting dressed.
"Careful, it's hot," Olivia warned. She sat down both cups on the coffee table in front of her couch. The four year old nodded and sat back. She decided to wait until it cooled down a little bit to take the first sip. "I bet you are wondering what we need to talk about, huh."
"Yeah," Eleanore nodded.
"You know how we talked about daddy? We said he went to heaven. Some place so far away that we can't visit him and he can't visit us?" Eleanore nodded. "Well, it turns out Daddy didn't go to heaven after all." Olivia could tell she lost the four year old. "It turns out we didn't lose daddy. We just had to believe we did in order to keep him and us safe. There was a very bad man trying to hurt us because your daddy was working his case. Your daddy had to go away for a while, but he is back Eleanore. You get to meet your dad."
Olivia stared at her daughter as her blue eyes began to search for answers. Olivia knew she told the four year old a lot of information. She also knew that the information probably wouldn't make sense to her.
"No, mommy," she finally answered.
"No, what?"
"No, him."
"Ellie bug, this is a good thing," Olivia paused. She thought about telling her daughter why it was a good thing, but instead she decided to switch her tactic. "Do you remember that time you fell off of your bike and you ran to me to make it all better? All you wanted was a hug and to kiss your boo boo. I held you so tight that it made all the fear and the pain disappear?" Ellie looked down at her knee where a small scar formed from that incident. She looked back up at her mother and nodded. "Well, your daddy has the same power. His may be even more powerful than mine. He was bigger arms and the ability to wrap you up in an even tighter hug. Plus he is a lot scarier to the mosters so when they try to hide under your bed he will definitely scare them away." She watched as her daughter begin to smile. "So do you want to meet him?"
"Will he buy me toys too?" Olivia threw her head back as she laughed. Toys they were the way to this kids heart.
"I'm sure he will. You are going to have him wrapped around your little finger."
"Okay."
"Okay you will meet him?" Ellie nodded. Olivia released the breath she hadn't known she was holding. Relief flooded her. She knew Ellie was probably going to test him out. While she did have his temper, she also had Olivia's heart. She felt things deeply. It was going to be interesting to see how it went between the two.
"Mommy," Olivia turned her attention to her daughter. Her blue eyes were focused on Olivia.
"Yeah, Ellie bug."
"I love you." Olivia smiled and tugged her into her side.
"I love you more." With that the mother and daughter each decided it was time to take a sip of their luke warm coco.
