I'm glad you guys love the first chapter, I wanted to give Charlotte a better introduction than before. At least this way you guys have a better view of her, being Harry's full legal guardian.
In this chapter, Charlotte goes to pick up Harry, and let's just say the Dursleys will be lucky if she leaves them unscathed.
Also, for those of who you wanted to see Dumbledore brought up on charges, that will eventually happen but for now, it's just about getting Harry somewhere safe.
And for those of you who have nothing but negativity to say about the rewrite, please take it elsewhere. I'm sorry you're not liking this, but I felt this was the best way to continue.
I don't own Harry Potter.
Enjoy!
Little Whinging, Surrey:
When Charlotte first saw the address on the paper, her blood boiled; she knew Dumbledore would leave poor Harry with Lily's horrid sister. The old man had played a dangerous game, she would remedy that. She had the legal paperwork to be Harry's guardian stored in Gringotts and sent off to her home in Paris and to her family solicitor. The second she left the bank she'd transformed into her animagus, a red-tailed hawk and flew as fast as she could to Surrey. Now she stood on the very edge of Privet Drive, taking a quick look around for anything suspicious. She sensed no magic around, other than the obvious 'barrier' over number four, and no signs of anyone in the area.
'I'm coming Harry.' She ducked under some bushes before transforming again, this time dressed as a muggle social worker, with a black and red pantsuit and her hair pulled back in a low ponytail. She also wore glasses, but they were just for show. Muggles weren't a mystery to her, if anything their fashion sense was much better than witches and warlocks. Taking a deep breath, she carefully approached number four, noticing the car gone which meant Vernon had already left for work, good.
Knock knock knock
"Coming…" a voice called from the other side of the door, and it opened to reveal the bitch herself. "Hello, can I help you?" she obviously tried to sound polite, but the bags under her eyes told another story.
"Hello Petunia Dursley." Charlotte gave a light smile, and then picked up the sound of a baby crying. "Might I come in? I have much to discuss with you."
"Discuss? Who are you?" she eyed Charlotte strangely.
"You can call me Margie Pearl, but I do recommend letting me inside, unless you want the neighbors to see." Charlotte pulled her jacket aside, revealing her wand's handle in the hidden pocket. Petunia went pale and backed up as if being struck by a snake. Charlotte stepped in and closed the door behind her.
"Y-You're one of them…those frea…" Charlotte's eyes glared so fiercely Petunia went quiet.
"I wouldn't finish that if I were you, angering a witch can be fatal to your health. Now, I don't have time to waste here with you so I'll get to it." She sighed. "Where is the boy?"
"You stay away from my Diddykins!" Charlotte's hazel eyes rolled.
"I'm not here for your future delinquent of a son, I'm talking about your nephew, Lily's child." Petunia paled again.
"Why do you want the brat? The letter said we had to take him in…"
"Letter? By chance was this letter written by a man named Albus Dumbledore?" her eyes said it all. "I see, well you won't have to worry about him. I was granted guardianship of Harry Potter this morning, and I've come to take him home."
"Why bother? The child is a freak, nothing special, not like my Dudley." There was a loud smack in the air, and Petunia suddenly found herself on the floor, and her face burned on the left side. "You…how dare you!" Charlotte took off her glasses and knelt to Petunia's level.
"I did warn you not to anger me, but apparently it bears repeating." She pulled out her wand and pointed the tip at Petunia's chin. "Now, where. Is. Harry. Potter." Petunia's eyes were full of fear, Charlotte almost thought it nice. What she knew about this woman, she deserved more than just a slap or two.
"WAAAAHHH!" a loud shriek echoed through the room, and Charlotte's ears heard it coming from…the stairs' cupboard? She shot up and ran over to the door, seeing it had a new lock placed on it, and a vent? She quickly undid the lock and yanked the door open, only to be met by a ferocious odor and the increasing sound of crying.
"H-Harry…?" she was stunned for a moment, and then felt sick as she took the baby's appearance in. He was filthy, his skin was coated in dust, his hair was all messy and knotted slightly, and his clothes were soiled mostly at the waist. His nappy hadn't been changed; the smell was enough to make her vomit in her mouth. "Oh, you poor child…." She teared up and lifted him from the dirty blanket, taking him out and laying him on the floor. His crying continued, and he squirmed as if in pain.
'How can anyone do this to a baby?' she quickly took off his onesie and saw that she was correct, his nappy had not been changed in who knows how long, and it leaked into his clothes. His skin was pale and had a large red rash going into the nappy.
"You vile bitch!" charlotte snarled at Petunia who hadn't moved from her spot on the floor. "You've had him for only a few days and you let him get like this?!"
"I didn't want him! That letter said we had no choice, your kind left him here!" hazel eyes flashed and Petunia sunk further down.
"Soon enough they will pay for it, and so will you." Charlotte quickly used her wand to dispose of the ruined clothes and nappy. She used another to quickly clean the dust and filth off the little boy's body but knew something needed to be done about the rash. "You're going to regret this bitch, Dolly!" a loud pop was heard and Petunia shrieked, backing up against the wall.
"Wh…what is that?!" a house elf dressed in a pink and black frock came forward.
"Mistress summoned Dolly?" the elf looked at her, and then shrieked when she saw Harry.
"Dolly, calm down." The elf took several breaths before she finally did. "I need you to go upstairs and find the nursery, grab a clean nappy, some wipes, clean baby clothes, and whatever else you can find to heal this rash."
"Right away mistress." The elf popped away, and Charlotte kept trying to calm Harry. Petunia stayed in her spot just shaking in fear, probably all she could do now; Dolly appeared some minutes later with the needed supplies and handed the nappy to Charlotte.
"Alright Harry, here we go." Charlotte took the wipes, organic with aloe, good for a baby's sensitive skin. She cleaned Harry's lower half up and used a cream Dolly found specifically for diaper rash before wrapping the clean nappy around him. The onesie Dolly brought was a bit big for Harry, but it was soft and warm for the weather outside. Harry calmed down after he was cleaned and dressed, but when his stomach growled Charlotte's anger grew.
"Mistress…?" Dolly could sense her anger, so Charlotte took a breath.
"Dolly, I want you to take Harry back to the hotel and feed him, I will be along shortly. Our portkey leaves in an hour, make sure everything is packed and ready to leave." Dolly nodded, lifted Harry up with magic and popped away. Charlotte stood up and marched over to Petunia, grabbing the front of her blouse and yanking her up until they were nose to nose.
"Y-You…" Charlotte's grip tightened.
"Say another word and I will rip out your voice box." She snarled. "I knew putting Harry with you would be horrible, but this…to neglect an innocent baby, your own blood, is something else entirely."
"I didn't want him…!"
"Lily wouldn't have done that to your son, were the situations switched. You had him for only a few days, and you let him wallow in his own filth! To top it off you just left him in that cupboard, but did you even feed him?"
"NO! My son is worthy of milk, that freak is not!" one more smack and down the bitch went again. Petunia shrieked and held her cheek, tears fell from her eyes, but did Charlotte feel bad? No.
"You really are the most despicable muggle I've ever met, no doubt your obese husband is the same. Nothing would give me better satisfaction than to beat the living shit out of you, or maim you at best, however…" Charlotte's wand appeared in her hand.
"W-What…what are you going to do?"
"Just tie up some loose ends, but before I do, I need to let you know a few things." She crouched down to Petunia's level. "Lily was a good person, and she worked hard, loved, lived, happily as she could, while you merely stewed in your jealousy and sank to a level far beneath what you could've been. You had potential Petunia, but you chose to lock yourself away and settle for a life as a housewife. While there's really nothing wrong with that, you pretty much wasted your teenage years."
"She was a freak…our parents loved her more, they cast me aside!"
"They didn't, they loved you but they pitied you, because you couldn't accept that Lily had magic and you didn't." Petunia's eyes went wide. "Yeah I know about the letter you sent that old goat, but he didn't let you into the school. You just couldn't let it go, and here you are, pathetic."
"I am a good wife! I will be a good mother to my diddykins!" Charlotte laughed.
"Diddykins will grow up to be a thug and a criminal, because you and your husband will spoil and indulge his toxic behavior as he bullies the children of this neighborhood. You'll make excuses for him over and over, but in time, too late in fact, you'll realize that you've made some horrible mistakes and you will drink yourself into an early grave. Vernon will die before you, heart attack in shame of him, and you will suffer for a few more years. Your son will be in jail for killing a man in a barfight, and you will end up alone, and unloved, all because you couldn't let go." She stood up and pointed her wand at the terrified woman's forehead.
"No…don't…"
"Like I said I'm short on time, but I can't have that old bastard looking for me anytime soon so, I'm just going to modify your memories. Trust me though, you're getting off easy." A swish of her wand, and the last few days, the memories of Harry, and her arrival, were gone from the woman's mind. Another swish, and Petunia was sound asleep and levitated to the couch.
'Your future won't change unless you do, but that's a million to one chance.' With that said, Charlotte removed all traces of her in the house, and disapparated to her hotel room at the Waldorf Hilton. Dolly was in the room bottle feeding Harry, and the little baby seemed very content.
"Mistress, I's be finished packing all items for home…"
"Thank you Dolly, how is he?" she sat on the bed and stroked his now clean hair. His eyes smiled at her with his mouth currently occupied, he was such a beautiful child. He had his daddy's face but his mother's eyes, but as she stared at his eyes Charlotte's own suddenly saw the scar. She ran her finger over it, it was still fresh and red, a permanent mark of the curse that took down the dark lord. People would know him by it, and she would have to fix that.
"Little one is well, but he's thinning mistress, Dolly thinks he need see healer."
"He will when we get home, the portkey will leave in thirty minutes."
"Twenty miss, Dolly's be keeping track."
"Twenty then, I've already paid for the room and we're out of here soon." She'd checked into the hotel a couple of days ago, and the first trip took out her energy but she had come and done what was needed. As soon as they got home, a new life would begin for them both.
The next day, Hogwarts Great Hall:
Albus Dumbledore was not a man who could be easily scared or angered, but in some rare cases, like today, he could become extremely puzzled. The day had started out just fine, the weather was cold but decent for November, the staff and the students were still rejoicing the fall of the Dark Lord Voldemort, the ministry, while in slight disarray, was rounding up the remaining 'guilty' death eaters, and young Harry Potter was safely tucked away at his relatives' home, where he would remain until he received his Hogwarts letter.
He had just gone back up to his office to prepare for another death eater trial that afternoon, when he suddenly received an owl from Gringotts. The letter was firm but short, demanding he meet with Ragnok, and naturally he complied, not sure what the reason was for. When he arrived however, Ragnok led him back to the office of the goblin Bloodfang, the goblin in charge of the Potter family accounts. They'd just told him some rather grievous news, or at least it was grievous to him.
"You cannot be serious, there is no possible way that someone else could have…"
"Our words are clear enough headmaster, the child, Harry James Potter, has been granted a new guardian selected by his parents. They have already come and signed the appropriate paperwork, and as we are aware, has gone to collect him." This could not be right.
"I knew James and Lily Potter very well, they couldn't have chosen someone else…"
"Yet they did, and that person has taken custody of the boy." This was not good, if someone else had the child it would surely complicate things.
"Might I know who they are?"
"That information is confidential, but the boy's guardian has requested that all items belonging to the Potters' be returned to the vault. That would include the cloak James Potter left with you." He had plans for that cloak, he had to hold onto it.
"I'm sure they won't mind if I kept it a little longer, I was planning to return it to the boy when he started school."
"Their words are clear as well headmaster, return the cloak by the end of the month or you will be charged. Furthermore, all connections of yours to the Potter family vaults are cut off, no one else is allowed to touch the vaults or their contents without his guardian's sole permission." That struck a nerve, whoever this was obviously had an issue with him.
"I must implore you tell me the guardian's name; I must see to it the boy is safe."
"We can already assure you he will be and will speak no more of this matter. The paperwork has been signed in blood, not even the Wizenagamot can overturn it." That was bad, this meant he couldn't use his position as chief warlock to summon this guardian and 'convince' them to return the boy. Unless the boy came and looked abused or hurt, there was nothing he could do.
"How long ago were they here?" they could at least answer that.
"Yesterday morning." A day late, but perhaps he could find out more.
"Are you sure there's nothing else…?"
"Nothing else that we're permitted to share with you, good day headmaster." He didn't dare argue more, the goblins were clever and difficult creatures, and it would do him no good to prolong things. He just bowed his head and left the bank swiftly until he stepped outside and disapparated to Surrey. He stood out on the edge of Privet Drive, and the neighborhood was mostly empty. He quickly strolled up to number four, knocked, and Petunia answered.
"What are you doing here?!" she all but shrieked in his ear.
"Good afternoon Petunia, I'm sure you remember me, I'm Albus…"
"I know who you are, your horrid sense of fashion gives you away." She remembered him, good. "Why are you here?"
"I've come to ask about your nephew, Harry Potter, I left him here a few nights ago." She looked at him confused.
"What are you talking about? We don't have him." Now he was concerned.
"Petunia, you must be mistaken, I left young Harry here just days ago on your doorstep with a letter."
"Well, we didn't get a letter and we have nothing to do with your kind, whether you left him here or not we don't have him. Good riddance too, Lily's gone and her child can join her for all I care." She slammed the door in his face, and the old wizard could only stare in disbelief. It wore off quickly though, he knew all he had to do was find the boy, convince the guardian to give him up and 'talk' to Petunia about his upbringing. She might not love the boy as hers, but this was the best place for him to be.
Meanwhile, in Paris:
Charlotte woke early the next morning; she was always an early riser but this time she woke extra early to check on Harry. He had slept in her room, the nursery wasn't ready yet, but that would be something to think about later.
After returning to the hotel and getting Harry fed Charlotte's international portkey activated, taking her, Dolly, and Harry straight to her family home in Paris. Prewett Manor, built back in the 1800s when her ancestors first arrived in France, and eventually migrating to England as the centuries passed. It was big like a castle, but it still qualified as a manor. It had a massive amount of land, with flower gardens and fountains all along; something her mother had enjoyed creating. The manor was also heavily warded, if anyone of ill intent tried to enter they would be either stunned or vaporized.
Dolly took Charlotte's things to her room, and Charlotte had called her private healer to check Harry over. Healer Jean Dubois had given Harry a thorough examination and found no lasting damage to the child other than minor malnutrition and diaper rash. He recommended keeping Harry on a steady diet until he got his weight back up, and gave a salve that helped vanish the remainder of the rash. The scar wasn't infected that was good, but he asked to see Harry again in a few weeks. Charlotte agreed, and off he went.
The rest of the day went by with Charlotte giving Dolly a list of things to buy, mainly baby clothes, nappies and other needed supplies. She'd spent time with Harry, being with a baby was nothing new to her, after all she had friends who had children the same age or a little older. Dolly brought everything back that evening, and Charlotte had the other house elf Dipper fix dinner for her and Harry. After that they both crashed early for bed, it was a much needed rest for both of them.
"Harry, good morning sweetie." The baby was already awake in his crib, and he smiled, reaching for her. "Aww, did you have a good sleep?" she had expected to wake up to him crying in the night, but he was surprisingly quiet.
"Baa, ba…"
"Ba ba? You want a bottle?" he smiled at her. "I'll take that as yes, come on then." She lifted him up, but checked his nappy first, he did need a change. One quick swap here and there, Charlotte pulled on her bathrobe and off to the kitchen they went.
"Good morning mistress."
"Good morning Dolly, where's the highchair?" Dolly pointed to the corner of the kitchen, Charlotte waved her hand and the chair floated towards the table. "Can you get a bottle ready for Harry, and where did you put the applesauce?"
"The left cupboard by the sink mistress, Dolly's bought cinnamon, strawberry and berry flavor for little master."
"Well done." After Harry was situated Charlotte summoned the applesauce, just to see if he would like one or more. The cinnamon one was sweetened with natural cinnamon and fruit juice, too much sugar might get him ill again since his stomach was still a little tender.
"Mistress, does you want your usual breakfast?"
"Banana pancakes and dried apricots." Her usual breakfast consisted of fresh fruit and cinnamon raisin toast, but today she felt like pancakes.
"Coming up mistress."
"Make yourself and Dipper something too." Dolly nodded and went straight to work, while Charlotte began to feed Harry.
"Open wide sweetie, aaahhh…" Harry mimicked her, opening his mouth big and wide before a spoonful of cinnamon applesauce went in. "Is that yummy?"
"Yum yum…!" he giggled as he spoke.
"Goood, here's some more." Harry kept on eating the sweet food, he finished it quickly before Dolly served Charlotte's breakfast. "That's a good boy Harry, a very good boy."
"Shall I's be giving him his bottle mistress?"
"Yes, but don't let him drink too much we don't want him to get sick." Dolly did as told, letting Harry grab the bottle and drink it down. Charlotte ate her own breakfast quickly, taking a glance at the morning paper. Nothing out of the ordinary in the beautiful city of Paris, what more could one expect in a peaceful place?
"Mistress, he's be finished."
"Good then, Dolly you and Dipper eat and finish cleaning the kitchen, I'm going to get dressed with Harry. Oh, I'm expecting a friend at nine, call me if the floo goes off."
"Yes mistress." it would be two hours before they came, giving Charlotte enough time to get Harry upstairs, washed, and put into some fresh clean clothing. She still had to get the nursery ready, but in the back of her mind, she had other thoughts to consider.
"Ok, how about a bubble bath?" Harry seemed happy, whether he understood or not. "Bubble bath here we come." Charlotte summoned the clothing to the master bathroom, along with a couple of towels. She set Harry down on the soft, white rug, and turned the water on.
"Bubb…b-bubb…"
"Bubble Harry, bubble." She pulled out some baby wash and poured it in, watching it foam instantly. Once it was filled enough Harry was stripped down and slowly placed in the water. "Bubble bubble…" Charlotte grabbed a handful and blew them at Harry, and he laughed trying to catch the fly aways. "Bubble bubble…." She blew some more, and as he kept trying to catch them she took a washrag and cleaned him down.
'Maybe I should get him some bath toys.' Something else to get on the list.
"Scrub-a-dub-dub…" she said it in a singsong voice, Harry didn't fuss a bit as she kept washing and rinsing him off. He didn't even mind the baby shampoo, the bubbles kept him entertained enough. "Alrighty baby, time to dry off." Harry didn't want to leave the tub but calmed down the second she pulled him out and wrapped him in the fluffy towel.
'He's adorable.' Too damn adorable, how could anyone hurt such an innocent little thing?
Knock knock
"Yes?"
"It's be Dipper mistress, sorry to be disturbing you and little master, but guest is waiting at the floo." Already? Lord she had to come this early?
"Go on and let them in, serve some tea I'll be down with Harry in a few minutes."
"Yes mistress." Charlotte quickly used her wand do dry Harry off, dress him, and then walked as fast as she could to her room. She pulled out a simple blue dress and flats, combed out her hair, and gathered Harry to greet the guest. When she reached the living room, her face broke out into an instant smile.
"Bonjour Charlotte!" a woman, elegant, blonde, tall and proud stood before her, smiling as big as she was.
"Bonjour Apolline!"
I hope you guys enjoyed it, and I'm glad I got it out earlier than planned.
Charlotte's now Harry's 'guardian' though she still counts as his new mother. Petunia is no longer a problem, and Dumbledore while he can't find Harry yet, he is not going to quit.
Next chapter Charlotte shares some personal thoughts with an old friend and makes a choice to where the future takes her and Harry. We'll also get a view on what her thoughts are about the Weasleys, you'll get a better view of what's up in that family.
