The Granger Son
Chapter 13
4 Years Later…
A lot had happened in Harry's life since being a part of the Granger family and attending Hogwarts; especially attending Hogwarts. He, as well as Hermione and Draco, had gotten into more trouble than they should have. As First Years, they had discovered the mystery of the Sorcerer's Stone; Second Years, the Chamber of Secrets an Harry had met the true Heir of Slytherin, Lord Voldemort—the man who murdered his birth parents; Third Years, Sirius Black escaping, and finding out that he not only was Harry's godfather, but was not at all responsible for selling out Lily and James like everyone thought he was; and Fourth Years, Harry having to participate in the Tri-Wizard Tournament, his sister and friend watching worriedly out for him, and him having to watch the revival of Voldemort, as well fighting him and seeing Cedric Diggory be killed.
Yes, a lot had happened, but Harry still tried to remain a happy child, despite everything going on around him. One thing that made him happy was that all his friends knew about him being adopted and Hermione being his sister. They were surprised somewhat, but also knew they should have suspected with how close Harry and Hermione were. And like Draco, they swore to secrecy about it when the siblings let them know Dumbledore would try to take him away from his family if he found out that was where he was. The ruse of him living with the Temples had been working so far the past nearly four years, and Dumbledore still believed he lived with them in Wales. The old man was leaving him alone, but Harry could tell that he was watching him closely.
McGonagall was also working in secret concerning Harry and keeping his whereabouts secret. Of course, it was her idea to have her in-laws do this ruse to protect Harry, but one a visit with Nora and Gregor, Gregor had off-handedly mentioned the legalities of what they were doing, making McGonagall realize that there was a possibility she and her in-laws could get in trouble for essentially hiding Harry. Therefore, she had paid a visit to her good friend Kingsley Shacklebolt at the Ministry of Magic and brought the situation to him. Kingsley was an Auror—Head Auror, to be exact—but was also well versed in Wizarding Law. Since learning about what she was doing to protect Harry, he had been working with her to make sure she and her family wouldn't be held criminally liable concerning the ruse they were playing. Harry was legally adopted, but only in the Muggle World; his adoption wasn't legal in the Wizarding World. But that wasn't going to stop the duo from trying to keep Harry with the Grangers if they could.
As for Dumbledore, he was frustrated because he could see Harry thriving within Slytherin House while in school, and Slytherin had been winning both House and Quidditch Cups; Harry was Slytherin's Seeker. He firmly believed that this was a result of Harry being with the Temple family that he was thriving so well in the House he wasn't supposed to be in. And if he thrived in Slytherin, there was no way Harry would be protected from Death Eaters or be able to fight against Voldemort. He wasn't being shaped into the wizard he needed to be when the ultimate fight eventually came. Therefore, he needed to get Harry away from the Temples and place him with the Dursleys, especially now with Voldemort's return. Those blood wards provided by Harry's maternal aunt were necessary. Dumbledore wasn't sure when his opportunity to get Harry away from Minerva's in-laws would come, but he'd be ready when the opportunity arose. And luckily for him, that opportunity finally came a week later.
Minerva was working diligently in her office that evening, preparing lesson plans, examinations, and the like for the upcoming school year. She was going to make sure her students were ready for the new term. As she worked, her Floo Network roared to life, letting her know someone was calling. Looking up, she watched the green flames dance a bit before Kingsley's head appeared in the flames.
"Kingsley, hello," McGonagall greeted. "What prompts your call?"
Kingsley had a grave look on his face as he said, "Minerva, this call is rather urgent; it isn't a social call."
"What is it?"
"There has been a Death Eater attack in Wales."
Minerva felt her heart stall in her chest, her eyes wide as she stared at Kingsley's floating head. Quickly moving from her desk to the fireplace, she asked, "And?"
"The Death Eaters somehow found out that Harry was supposedly living with the Temples, having been adopted by him, and they attacked their home. Unfortunately, there were no survivors; I'm so sorry, Minerva."
As shocked and distraught as she felt at the death of her in-laws, Minerva couldn't help but think about Harry. He wasn't there, and he didn't know about the attack. And if Albus found out about it—and he would—he'd find Harry's body not present there. Looking at Kingsley, she asked, "Does Albus know about it?"
Kingsley nodded. "Yes, he is aware of it and knows that Harry wasn't at "home". He told me he's going to search for Harry himself to deliver the news, and you know if anyone can find Harry, Albus can. Minerva, we have to move quickly now concerning Harry."
"Absolutely. I'll head over to the Grangers and tell Harry and his family about the attack. Hopefully I'll make it there before Albus realizes Harry is there, as well as lives there."
"You do that, and I'll head over to Gringotts in the morning. I'll try to see if I can view the Potters' wills. They will state who Harry's legal guardians, and hopefully do so before Albus does anything."
Minerva nodded and thanked Kingsley before cancelling the Floo call. Once she did that, she grabbed her wand and quickly strode from her office, making her way through the corridors to exit Hogwarts. She had to get to the Granger home, and fast.
At the Granger home, the family was inside having family game night. They were playing rummy, as well as charades. Currently, they were playing charades and it was Hermione's turn. Robert was laughing while his wife and son were trying to guess what his daughter was attempting to act out. Just as Jean exclaimed her guess and Hermione proclaimed it right, there was a knock on the front door.
"I'll get it," Harry said, standing from his seat and walking towards the door. Opening the door, his green eyes widened in shock at seeing none other than Professor Dumbledore, his stomach dropping inside of him.
Dumbledore was just as shocked to find Harry at this location. As soon as he had heard about the attack on the Temples, he had gone to Wales to try and find Harry's body, hoping the boy was alive. However, he had been surprised to only find three bodies, none of which were Harry's. He had then quickly returned to his office and used an advanced Tracking Spell to find the boy's whereabouts. He had been surprised to find him far from Wales, and in a Muggle neighborhood no less, even more so that it was the home of Miss Hermione Granger.
Robert came around the corner to see who was at the door, seeing as Harry had not yet returned. And like his son, he was shocked to see the old Headmaster of his children's school at his doorstep. Looking at him, he greeted, "Professor."
"Mr. Granger, good evening," Dumbledore replied pleasantly, letting himself inside and walking past Harry and Robert.
Harry looked at his father before closing the door, and following the old man into the living room where Hermione and Jean were waiting, The women looked surprised at seeing Professor Dumbledore in their household as he looked around, and a feeling a dread fell over the entire household. Dumbledore however, continued to look around the family's home, particularly at the many pictures depicting Harry as a part of the Granger family in different stages of growing up. It was obvious to him then that the boy had been a part of this household for the entirety of his life since Lily and James's death. The Temples and Minerva had lied to him.
As for the Grangers, they all knew that they had been caught in their ruse. But how did Dumbledore know Harry was here? How did he find out?
Finished looking around, Dumbledore turned to look at Harry and said, "Harry, my boy, I had come to deliver the news of your family's death to you, but I see that you have been with your family this whole time."
Harry's eyes widened. The Temples were dead? Nora, Gregor, and Andrew were all dead? But how? When? Before he could ask these questions, the Headmaster continued speaking.
"And now that I can I was tricked concerning your whereabouts, I am going to correct things now. Harry, I plan on taking your from here to live with your real family."
"But Harry is with his real family," Hermione spoke up. "We're his family, he's been with us his whole life. We're his real family."
"I mean his blood relatives, Miss Granger. I will be taking him to be with his mother's family."
"I am his mother," Jean said standing defiantly. "And I won't let you take Harry from us. He is our son through legal adoption. He's ours, and you can't take him."
"And I don't want to go," Harry added.
Dumbledore sighed, him having a feeling something like this would happen. Luckily, he had come prepared. "That may be so, but the Department of Magical Law Enforcement, or the DMLE, does not acknowledge the legal proceedings concerning adoption via Muggle means. They will only go by what is written in the magical child's parents will."
He then reached into the pocket of his robes and pulled out a rolled piece of parchment, opening it and showing them the contents. "I have your birth parents' will right here, Harry. In the event something happened to them, the Potters, particularly Lily, granted guardianship of you over to me. Therefore, I am your legal guardian and can make decisions in your best interest."
Jean let out a horrified gasp while Robert stood seething. They couldn't believe this! This old wizard was really going to take their son away from them! Both Jean and Hermione were distraught with the turn of events, and Robert was furious. It took everything in him not to punch the living daylights out of the old man. Through the tears in her eyes, Hermione looked at the will Professor Dumbledore was holding. She blinked when she swore the will shimmered in his hand a bit before becoming solid once more. Was that…was the will real? Before she could think on it more, let alone ask about it, Harry spoke up in a shout.
"I won't go! I'm not leaving my family for people I don't even know! I don't care what my birth parents' will says! I'm with my family and I'm staying with them! You can't make me, Professor!" Harry shouted defiantly, his hands balled in fists and shaking by his side as he glowered at the Headmaster.
"I must abide by the law, Harry, as so do you," Dumbledore replied patiently. "Because I have legal guardianship over you, I can make any decision concerning your wellbeing. And I will move you in with the Dursleys as soon as tomorrow. Make sure you are packed and ready to leave in the morning around eleven."
He then looked at the rest of the family. "You all have a good night."
And in front of them, he Disapparated away, leaving the Granger family completely at a loss of what to do. Jean cried into her husband's arms while Harry's magic lashed out, destroying the living room around them. Hermione, though her tears fell down her face at the prospect of losing her brother, couldn't help but wonder if the will the Headmaster had shown them was even real. Needing to consult her textbooks, she ran upstairs to her room to do so.
Outside of the Granger home, McGonagall had heard everything said inside. She could not believe the audacity of Albus. How dare he disrupt this family and leave them in a state of distress, as well as claiming to take their son from them in the morning! She had to do something, she needed to act quickly. Albus may have had Lily and James's will, but that didn't mean it was true. She needed to see their wills for herself, and would do so with Kingsley tomorrow morning, and as soon as possible. Disapparating away, she made her way to the Ministry, intent on alerting Kingsley about Albus's plans.
