On the morning of the next day, theFurenof Earl Chengyi reluctantly announced the news of Wengongzicoming to the residence today to visit Ruan Xi.
The concubines in the residence secretly derided Zhangshi, the dignified and legitimate wife for losing her head in her continued fight for favour despite being at her age, such that she gave a good son-in-law to an illegitimate daughter like Ruansi niang, thereby allowing her to step on her biological daughter's head. Meanwhile, the other two concubines with daughters were extremely dissatisfied with Zhangshi.
All three of them were illegitimate daughters, and yet Zhangshipersonally helped the motherless Ruansi niang arrange such a good marriage, which was equivalent to stepping on their daughters' heads.
The two concubines found it difficult to settle the thoughts in their heart. When they thought about how the Earl had been resting in the main courtyard for the past few nights, they secretly scolded Zhangshifor coming up with a tactic like this to fight for favour even though she was akin to a pearl whose lustre had yellowed in its old age.
However, their opinions were only like this because no one apart from Linyiniangknew that Zhangshihad been pitted by her own daughter in her moment of soft heartedness, and she had been regretting her actions for a long time.
Truthfully speaking, Linyiniangheld Zhangshi's hypocrisy and viciousness in contempt.
It was clearly her fault and yet she vented her anger on Ruansi niang's head. She looked abled, virtuous and magnanimous on the surface, but she acted against Ruansi niangin the dark, and she nearly took away Ruansi niang's life.
……
All the servants in the Limpid Heart Garden were in high spirits. With a face full of smiles, they took care of Limpid Heart Garden until it was spick and span, and the grass and fauna in the courtyard was neatly trimmed.
The fact that the Fourth Young Lady's fiancé was personally paying her a visit in her illness meant that Wengongzivalued this marriage and thought highly of the Fourth Young Lady.
Concurrently, it also symbolised that the Earl Chengyi Residence was claiming connections to the higher status Wen Family, which was a huge backing.
Even the vegetarian and Buddha-reveringLao Taitaimade her servants send over a few sets of new spring skirts and head ornaments upon hearing the good news.
Once theLao Taitaistarted, theFurenand other concubines in the residence also followed suit by sending a few good items.
Silks and satin, rouge and powder, jewellery and head ornaments…
In a span of a day, the number of items that Ruan Xi received was greater than the amount that the original owner had accumulated in her private stores over fourteen years.
In the room, Su Yu helped her Young Lady dress and make up enthusiastically.
Despite being the involved person, Ruan Xi was the calmest among them which made her appear slightly inharmonious.
"Young Lady, aren't you happy?" Su Yu could not resist asking curiously as she observed her Young Lady's customary appearance.
Ruan Xi gave a pause before she plastered a resplendent smile on her visage. "Iamhappy!"
Su Yu: "……" Why was she getting the sense that her Young Lady's smile was rather perfunctory, was it her illusion?
Ruan Xi released a sigh quietly. Before she even met Wen Ting Zhou, she was already having opinions about this fiancé of hers. What if the other party was a transmigrator…
Ruan Xi was not afraid of the other party being reborn, but she feared that he had crossed over.
Coincidentally, she could take the chance to observe him when he paid her a visit.

Su Zhu returned from the main kitchen, holding a large food box in her hands.
Her face was glowing with health, and she looked proud and elated.
"Young Lady, asnubiwas on the way back, she overheard people talking about the tea party that the Third Young Lady was hosting."
"Tea party?" Su Yu widened her eyes.
"Yes, it's happening in the apricot garden in the residence. It happens to be the season where the apricots are flourishing." Su Zhu placed the food box on the table and took out several plates of exquisite-looking pastries.
"Young Lady, because the Third Young Lady is hosting a tea party, the main kitchen has made quite a lot of pastries.Nubihas brought back a few types."
Ruan Xi nodded, glancing at the overstimulated and tireless Su Yu. Helplessly, she said: "That's enough Su Yu, stop fussing over it. Wengongziis studying in the academy and the time that they are given for their afternoon break is short. In all likelihood, he will only come over in the late afternoon withda geonce his school concludes."
Breakfast had been greasy and ridden with issues in one or two of the meat dishes. Thus, Ruan Xi merely took a few symbolic bites before she decided to use the pastries to cushion her stomach.
Her stomach happened to be hungry right now.
It seems like her legitimate mother was resolute in making her obese by giving her big fishes and meats in all three of her meals daily. It had to be said that she was truly willing to put down the capital.
When Su Yu heard her words, she felt that they were reasonable so she could only stop her hand movements.
Ruan Xi moved towards the table and sat down. Her golden finger was not forthcoming with any prompts; it seems like there were no issues with the pastries so Ruan Xi settled her mind and started eating them.
After eating her fill, Ruan Xi thought about her state of affairs as she drank her flower tea.
It was not feasible to continue living her days like this, where she was constantly being stared at by her legitimate mother like a pig raised for slaughter. It was too oppressive.
Marrying out would naturally resolve everything, but Ruan Xi remembered that she had just turned fourteen. Herhair tying ceremonywas still a year away, and while she was allowed to marry out after her coming of age ceremony, most noble daughters would only marry out after they were sixteen.
及笄 (pinyin: ji ji) — a coming of age ceremony for girls at the age of fifteen, where they begin wearing their hair bound up and held in place by a pin.
Ruansan niangalready had her hair tying ceremony, and she was probably marrying out next year.
What a headache.
Ruan Xi pursed her lips.
When Su Yu and Su Zhu saw their Young Lady frowning as she was pondering about something, they stood at the side quietly in a perceptive manner.
Time slipped by unconsciously, and the fellow sisters that Ruansan nianginvited arrived one after another, thus livening up the residence.
On the converse, Limpid Heart Garden finally quietened down gain.
However, this silence was quickly shattered because her legitimate mother had brought herself and a physician to her door.
The grandiose group of people then filled Ruan Xi's room to the brim.
Zhangshiwas around the ages of forty, but owing to her good maintenance, she looked like she was barely thirty with her dignified and beautiful facial features. Furthermore, she had the imposing manner of a matriarch after being in control of the housewifely duties for many years.
Hurriedly, Ruan Xi gave her a standard bow that was suited for the younger generation. "This daughter pays her respect to Mother."
Her legitimate mother Zhangshismiled and nodded before she spoke with a genial expression: "Si niang, from the looks of your complexion, you should be mostly recovered, but it is better to allow the physician to take your pulse."
Saying that, Zhangshiimmediately allowed the physician to take Ruan Xi's pulse. Then, she scrutinised Ruan Xi's rosy countenance carefully.
She did not expect thatsi niang, who had been on the verge of biting the dust, would not have the pallor that indicative of the fact that she was just beginning to recover.
Zhangshiwas inwardly shocked. Thisyatou's body was a lot healthier than she had imagined.
Sure enough, giving her the infertility medicine was the right choice.
Ruan Xi pretended to be moved to tears of gratitude: "… Many thanks for Mother's concern."
Yes, she ought to thank Zhangshifor her 'concern'.
She clearly knew that she was beginning to recover from her cold and yet she told the kitchen to prepare an entirely greasy meal.
She would remember her legitimate mother's 'consideration' with reverence.
If she did not remember incorrectly, the old physician that was currently taking her pulse was the same physician who had opened a prescription for the original owner.
I wonder if he belongs to my legitimate mother, Ruan Xi mused in her heart.
The old physician took Ruan Xi's pulse carefully before he retracted his hand a short while later.
No matter how disgusted Zhangshifelt in her heart, she still wore a gentle and affectionate smile on her face.
"Physician, hassi niangfully recovered from her illness?"
The old physician nodded his head and replied honestly: "The Fourth Young Lady's body is unhindered for the most part, but the fierce and violent cold has harmed her vitality, so she needs to carefully rebuild and make up for her lost vitality."
Zhangshiseemed to release a breath of relief before she promptly nodded. "She ought to. Please open a prescription for her, physician."
Hence, the old physician opened a prescription and left immediately.
It was clear to him that this Fourth Young Lady's cold was not severe, and she only needed to drink some ginger tea and she would be fine. Who knew what happened to her in the end, such that it heavily injured her vitality. The filth in the rich and influential families… The old physician did not want to be mixed into it.

Her legitimate mother appeared quite busy, since she swiftly departed with the prescription after the physician took her pulse.
She also had her servants send over the medicinal herbs stated in the prescription.
After Ruan Xi looked through all of them, a dark glint flitted past her eyes. Her golden finger had shown its power and prestige again; the majority of medicinal herbs had 'ingredients' added to them. Let alone nourishing her vitality, it would be stranger if she did not harm her body further through consumption.
Her legitimate mother had truly "expended much care and thought" on this.
She could not build up her health by taking tonics, and the path of reinvigorating herself with food had been obstructed.
Should she askLaoTaitaifor support?
Ruan Xi mulled over it, only to abandon the thought in the end. There was a possibility thatLao Taitaiwould pay attention to this matter, but it would infuriate her legitimate mother Zhangshi.
It looks like she could only walk the fiancé route, and hope that Wen Ting Zhou had not been transmigrated into.
The temperament cultivated by a noble son in an ancient era aristocratic family was vastly different from a modern person.
This was also the reason why Ruan Xi wanted to seize every minute and second to completely fuse and grasp the things that the original owner had learnt.
The temperament of a modern person and an ancient noble daughter was not the same. Since Ruansan nianghad been through a lifetime in the ancient era, the flaws on her person were not as obvious after her rebirth return. But as a modern person herself, Ruan Xi could still discern a trace of it.
Ruan Xi suddenly remembered that the female protagonist in the book should have transmigrated over around this time.
Nonetheless, it was unlikely for her to have any interactions with the female protagonist.
Hence, Ruan Xi tossed the female protagonist to the back of her head.
Conforming to Ruan Xi's expectations, Wengongzidid not come over in the afternoon. When the noble daughters who were attending Ruansan niang's tea party learnt of the fact that Wengongziwould be visiting the Earl's Residence today, they were ecstatic, and they constantly raised their heads to look around hopefully. Even their gossiping had an absent-minded quality to it, and if they hadn't been told that Ruansi niangwas recovering from her serious illness, they would have wanted to catch a glimpse of this Ruansi niang. As a result, Ruansan niangwas quite annoyed.
Unfortunately, they're bound for disappointment, since Wen gongzi is only coming over to the Earl's Residence with oldest brother after their school ends.
Remembering her motive for hosting this tea party, Ruansan niangcould only suppress her displeasure and interact with the distant cousin of the future Empress Dowager in a warm manner.
After the tea party concluded, the noble daughters left reluctantly.
In a feat of coincidence, the steward of the gate house rushed over to the main courtyard to report not long after they had left.
"Furen, the Oldest Young Master has arrived with Wengongzi!"
Wengongziwas here….
This news was delivered to the Limpid Heart Garden very quickly.
Su Yu and Su Zhu became excited and nervous.
Ruan Xi: "……"

Was the female lead among the "friends" invited to the tea party? I think it was hinted that she'd be there as Ruan Ning wanted to curry favour with her. – I just want a name so I can differentiate between the several "female leads": there's the original in the novel, there's Ruan Ning whose first transmigration seemed very much like a FL, until she was buried with the emperor that is – and then there's OUR FL, Ruan Xi who we were introduced to first in the beginning.
Incidentally, who was the Male lead in the original? Has he been mentioned yet? what was the female lead doing while Ruan Ning was making a name for herself with her golden finger?

The "fellow sister" that Ruan Ning invited to this party is the distant cousin of the female protagonist in the book, and Ruan Ning hopes to get closer to said cousin so she can meet the book female protagonist.
The male protagonist of the book is the Fourth Prince, who hasn't showed up officially.
And in the book, when Ruan Ning was making waves with hwe golden finger in the book, the female protagonist took her as a cautionary tale for what she shouldn't do, and she concealed herself and became laid-back (chill about everything) in the Fourth Prince's residence as his concubine.

I think "motherless Ruan san niang" in third paragraph should be motherless Ruan si niang?
