Finding a doctor that they could understand was hard, almost as hard as finding a doctor that could understand them. But thankfully, they managed to find one that could speak French. Erik lied about being Christine's husband for practical purposes. Such as being allowed to linger out front after he carried her to the back. She was the one that actually remained in the room with the unconscious woman. Something that both irked her and soothed the worried part of her that she was determined to not give into.
Smelling salts were used to bring her around. They waited semi patiently as Christine slowly regained her bearings. Once she had, the doctor immediately began drilling her with questions and checking some vitals.
The only advice that the doctor could give about the nausea was to wait it out, even if it lasted awhile. It was probably nothing more than a bug or something. He also made a point about remaining hydrated even if she couldn't hold down foods.
Christine had only nodded blearily and he offered her an almost sympathetic smile before letting them go. Giry approached her and carefully pulled the younger woman's slender arm around her shoulders.
It was another few minutes before Christine could make it to her feet, leaning into her slightly as they slowly made their way out to Erik.
"It's nothing serious and there is nothing he can do. We shall have to let it run it's course." Antionette informed coolly once they'd reached him.
Erik nodded distractedly, more interested in relieving her of her burden. She pretended not to notice the way Christine leaned more heavily into Erik, a sign that she had more trust in the masked man despite what he'd done in the past. If she wanted to be a foolish idiot, that was on her.
They walked along the path in a painstakingly slow manner until they reached inn that was willing to rent the three of them a couple of rooms for awhile. Though they did seem awfully amused by Erik's somewhat broken attempt at English. If only that had been one of the languages the man bothered to learn, it would make this so much easier.
Antionette had her own room and Erik was posing as Christine's husband just as he had with the doctor, so they were sharing a room. The ruse had brought a pink flush to Christine's cheeks, being the only natural color that had been there for quite a while. It was something that she was relieved by and resented in equal measures.
The nausea didn't let up at all as she was lead to believe. While it still seemed to vary in potency, it remained. Christine would've thought that it just meant that she was sicker than originally assumed if it weren't for the fact that her monthly was extremely late at this point.
This scared her because she was beginning to notice other symptoms that just didn't go with the theory of her being sick. Such as her bosoms being incredibly tender to the touch. She wanted to go to the doctor again but she wasn't sure if she should ask Erik to take her.
He was an amazing man, but potential pregnancy was a delicate situation and she didn't know how he'd react to the news. So with this in mind, she braced herself to ask Antionette.
Christine wandered over to the older woman's room slowly, doing her best to not upset her stomach again. She wasn't sure she had much more to bring up. She knocked on the door and when it was opened, she smiled as sheepishly as she could manage.
"What is it?" Antionette questioned blankly, leaning heavily on her cane. The lack of inflection caused Christine to hesitate but this was the lesser of two evils.
"I...I think I should go back to the doctor...things have changed. Can you come with me?" She implored. She could see the reluctance in the older woman, yet she was still relieved when she nodded.
Pregnant. She was pregnant. A part of Christine was overjoyed, granted it was much sooner than she was really expecting. The other part of her was completely unsure what to think of it. What did this mean for her relationship with Erik? Would he be excited as well? Somehow she doubted it. The idea that he wouldn't be happy about this was soul crushing.
When she'd made the decision to be with him, she'd decided that she wanted everything with him. Not just the eventual marriage, but the family that typically followed as well. Even if it was out of order.
She perched on the side of the bed, her hand resting on her stomach instinctively. Even if there weren't any changes yet, she felt the urge to do so. Could she bond with them already? She wasn't entirely sure but it brought her some comfort to do such a thing so surely that had to count for something.
Christine was so distracted that she hadn't even noticed Erik when he entered the room, presumably having been out trying to find some sort of job that he could do with a limited grasp on English. He approached her and leaned over, pressing a gentle kiss to her cheek.
"How are you feeling, Mon ange? Any better? You seem like you have something on your mind." Erik mused softly, tilting his head to the side ever so slightly. It was usually a habit that amused her, but she wasn't sure anything could amuse her as of right now.
"...About the same, darling. However..I do have something on my mind. It's about something I learned today." Christine uttered, inwardly cursing herself for beating around the bush.
His confusion heightened, as did his concern. Erik wasn't sure what that meant, but he could only assume that there was either another trip to to the doctor or she'd gone somewhere else today. One situation was more likely than the other. He could only hope that whatever she learned wasn't too horrible.
"What did you learn today? I must say that I'm intrigued." Erik uttered kindly, keeping his tone light and conversational.
Christine didn't answer right away and it was something that only made him more nervous. She took a few deep breaths and he knelt beside her, resting a hand on one of her knees as he looked up at her imploringly.
"I'm... I'm pregnant, Erik." Christine finally murmured, clenching her eyes shut so she couldn't see his reaction.
His blood ran cold and he found himself at a loss. There were so many emotions swirling through his head that he didn't know which to act upon. So he did the only thing that he could think of to ensure that he wouldn't say something stupid despite how boldly he'd given Giry his opinion on the boat.
He stood up and left.
