Chapter 4

Landing in the bottom of the hole, Percy noticed he was in what looked like a hallway leading straight ahead decorated with murals on the walls depicting scenes of battle.

A glint of light at the end of the hall caught his eye, and he moved to find what looked to be a small wooden shield and a sword propped up underneath a torch.

Iron Sword

Basic Sword – 50 Damage

Wooden Shield

Durability 20/20

Percy realized that he had jumped down into the dungeon without any form of weaponry or protection. He was such a dumbass, how was he supposed to protect himself here if he didn't have anything to fight? Sure he has food and water, but unless he planned on duking it out with whatever was down here he probably wouldn't have stood a chance.

Deciding not to look a gift horse in the mouth, he picked up the sword and shield and progressed further down into the dungeon until he reached the entrance to a small room. Hearing chattering from inside, he crouched down and slowly entered, seeing crates lying all around the room and a skeleton standing in the center of the room fiddling with its sword. Percy needed to gauge the strength of his opposition, so used observe to find out what the skeleton's stats were.

Skeleton

LVL: 5

HP: 250/250

MP: N/A

Basic enemy, skeletons are physically weak, and have been summoned and bound by ?. Beware, they are strong in groups.

Kill to gain 25 EXP, $, ?

Huh, seems simple enough of an enemy then, typical new player enemy. He figured it made sense since the dungeon was rated for those at level 5. He was fairly certain he could defeat the skeleton even with his limited knowledge with swords, however that didn't mean he should just go rushing in. Deciding on attempting to sneak around and attack from behind.

Unfortunately for Percy, the sudden ping in the small room startled him as he was passing by a crate, knocking it over and crashing to the ground. The skeleton, now fully aware of his presence, charged Percy in an attempt to run him through. Jumping out of the way of the skeletons thrust, Percy struck back at the skeletons over extended arm.

-50 HP + (STR) = -63 HP

The skeleton pulled back, sending a diagonal slash at Percy in an attempt to cut his head off. Percy brought up his shield to block the strike, then bashed his shield forward. Sending the skeleton back, Percy sent a flurry of strikes at the now prone skeleton. Sure enough, the skeleton soon collapsed into a pile of dust, leaving behind a $5 bill and what looked like a bone.

Percy had no clue what he was going to do with the bone, but figured he should keep it just in case it may come in handy later. As soon as he touched the $5 bill, it disappeared and he noticed that the money on his character screen automatically went up by the same amount. That would definitely be useful in protecting his money from Smelly Gabe, that creep always shook him down first thing when he arrived at the apartment.

$: 23 + 5 = 28

EXP: 100 + 25 = 125/150

Grinning, Percy felt like he could take on the world. This was the level of enemy he had to face down here? To think he was worried about what he would face, this was a cakewalk! Giving a war cry, Percy charged forward down the hall, ready for any challenge he would face.

Even though Percy was working on it, he was still a little daft, and he should probably listen to his more rational side a little more. After all, he wouldn't be running away from 10 skeletons that he had almost immediately ran into after exiting the first room if he had. How was he going to get out of this, he couldn't die in a LVL 5 dungeon!

Wait, the water bottles! He gained a boost to his stats and health when he doused himself with one, that would be his ticket out of here! Skidding to a halt and pulling a bottle out of his inventory, he proceeded to pour its contents all over his head.

Feeling that familiar rush of power, Percy turned to take on the incoming skeletons, surprising the lead 3 and decapitating them with a single swing of his sword. The skeletons stopped and surrounded him, suddenly wary of him after the small display. An overeager skeleton charged at him from his left, to which he parried the sword and bisected the creature at its waist.

Turning his attention on the two skeletons in front of him, he charged forward and slashed, catching the first off guard and making quick work of it but getting parried by the second. Pulling back, Percy twisted his body around to block a searching strike from the skeleton on his right with his shield, before quickly re-orienting himself to block another strike from his front.

Quick as he could, he flashed out a strike to the head of one of the skeletons, before changing directions mid swing in an attempt to catch the creature off guard. He watched gleefully as the skeleton fell for his trick, and instead of blocking his strike was stabbed through its spine, killing it.

With over half the skeletons gone, he quickly went on the offensive, charging two of the other skeletons and making quick work of them before quickly turning to block a strike from behind. Growling, Percy shoved the skeletons sword away with his shield and putting the skeleton off balance, to which he capitalized on by cutting off its leg. As the creature fell, Percy brought his sword up and cut the head off, turning to the final skeleton before slaying it as well.

Looking over the piles of dust, bone, and money that signified his success over the skeletons, Percy felt proud of what he had accomplished. He was surprised that he was able to take on ten enemies at once, even if they were skeletons. Deciding to check his notifications, he got a pleasant surprise.

Two new skills and a level up, what's not to love? Collecting all of his winnings, Percy trekked into the next portion of the dungeon. Crouching down, Percy observed a room filled with skeletons in stands that seemed to be cheering in their odd chattering language. At the edge of the stands in the back of the room stood a throne of what looked to be bones, yet the owner of the throne was not sitting on it at the moment. Instead, Percy figured that the owner was the teen standing in the center of the room, hands raised above his head in triumph.

The teen could not have been older than 16, yet he seemed to be the craziest person Percy had ever seen. A scar ran down his right eye, ratty black hair framing the deranged smile on his face as he watched the skeletons around him. Putting his arms down, the teen returned to his throne as if he was a kind looking upon his subjects. Percy decided that using observe on the strange boy would be his best bet to gauge what he just walked into.

Dominic, Apprentice Necromancer

LVL: 25

HP: 5000/5000

MP: 2500/2500

Dominic is the son of the goddess of magic. Believing his mother to be cruel in ignoring him all his life, he decided to strike back at her by stealing an object from her palace that she had forgotten about. The objects built in security measures placed a curse on him after sensing his intentions, sending him mad in the process.

Kill to gain: 1500 EXP, $1500, D100, ?, ?

Uh-oh, could he take this guy on? He had only faced skeletons before this, but he counted there to be 20 skeletons in the room with this guy, who himself was almost 20 levels higher than Percy's current level. Perhaps he could sneak around him and attempt a sneak attack for a critical? Deciding to do so, he carefully started to creep around the area, slinking into the shadows beneath the stands and making his way to the throne.

Percy counted himself lucky that the skeletons were cheering loudly in their chatter, as it masqueraded any sound he may be making in his inexperience with sneaking. Approaching the throne from behind, he readied his blade for his attack; he only had one shot at this before all hell broke loose. Bracing himself, Percy stabbed forward with his sword, plunging it through the throne and into Dominic's back.

Dominic gave a gasp, before launching himself off of the throne away from Percy, placing a hand over the sword wound through his stomach. Percy ran out from behind to attempt to finish the fight quickly, but was repulsed by a wave of angry skeletons that had rose to defend their master.

"How dare you worm, do you know who I am? I am King, I am tantamount to a god with my army, a necromancer so fearsome that my own mother would fear to face me!" Dominic screamed out, utter venom lacing his words. He stared down at Percy as if he was nothing more than an ant, nothing more than dirt beneath his boot. "No matter, you insect. I have no care if you realized the treasonous action you have just committed, I will flay you all the same and hang you as an ornament for all to see as a warning of my powers! Kill that boy!"

Heeding their master's words, the skeletons charged at Percy in a wild frenzy in an attempt to kill him. Parrying slash after slash, deflecting swords left and right with his shield, Percy was beset on all sides and attempting to prevent himself from being injured. As he deflected a strike, a skeleton got a lucky hit in and slashed his extended arm.

-50 HP

Percy HP: 150/200

Couldn't take many more of those, especially since these were only the low level enemies that Dominic was sending after him. Striking forwards, Percy managed to catch two skeletons that were preparing to deliver overhead strikes, turning them into dust. He kept defending himself, caught within a whirlwind of fighting as he pressed every opportunity he could scrape by with.

Soon enough, Percy had managed to defeat 15 of the skeletons, leaving 10 left. The skeletons gave Percy a wide berth as they studied him for openings. Taking this time to get a breather, Percy checked Dominic's condition. As he looked to Dominic, he saw him with his hands outstretched and muttering an incantation, sweat washing down his forehead. Whatever he was doing, it was tiring him out quickly, and Percy assumed that the necromancer was attempting a spell with all his mana to end the fight quickly due to his current condition.

Suddenly, the ring on Dominic's right hand flashed, and a hand burst through the ground as Dominic fell to his knees in exhaustion. The remaining skeletons around Percy were all suddenly pulled back by a great force, smashing into the hand and forming a mass of bones that were quickly reknitting themselves into another hand before his eyes.

Soon enough, the hands worked together and pulled the rest of the body out of the ground, revealing a large golem decked out in armor. It's eyes made of purple flames, it glared at Percy and pulled a large sword from its back.

Brthanz, Golem of Dread

Percy went slack jawed, he was definitely dead now. Why didn't he aim for Dominic's head when he had the chance! No wonder Dominic seems so tired, this creature must have taken everything that he had. Percy needed an edge, so pulled out another water bottle to pour over himself.

Percy hoped this would be enough to at least level the playing field, but with 15000 health this creature was going to be a doozy to defeat. Not wanting to give the creature the luxury of the first strike, he dashed forward in an attempt to get under its guard, ducking underneath the golem's sword and scoring a strike on its stomach.

-50 HP + (STR) = -63 HP

This was going to take a while, Percy thought as he dodged another strike from the beast. The golem raised its sword overhead and struck down, lodging its sword into the ground as he dashed to the side. Although this thing seemed to have way superior strength, its speed left a lot to be desired, and if he played his cards right he should be able to win in a war of attrition.

Enacting his plan, Percy proceeded to dance around Brthanz, taking any chance to stab and prod that he could find. The golem was slowly being whittled down, however was catching onto Percy's play. As he came in for another strike against the golems leg, the golem swings its massive sword in a wide arc, hitting Percy across the stomach and sending him flying back into the wall.

-2000 HP

Percy HP: 1200/3200

Spitting out a glob of blood, Percy shakily reached up to press his hand into his stomach, gasping in pain as he pressed his hand down to staunch the bleeding. That was insane, just one hit was able to take him down by over half when he was powered up! Shakily stumbling to his feet, he leaned against the wall as he watched Brthanz march towards him.

As quick as he could, he pulled out another water bottle to try to heal himself, but before he could pour it the golem swung his sword again, forcing Percy to drop the bottle of water and roll to the side. Grunting in pain, he stumbled to his feet and tried to put some space between him and Brthanz, however the golem was able to bring his sword back around to strike at Percy again.

Time seemed to slow as Percy saw his life flash before his eyes, and how boring it was. Putting his hand out in front of him in a feeble attempt to stop the inevitable, he only wished that he could see his mothers smiling face one last time.

As he was awaiting his death, something seemed to tug in his stomach at that exact moment. His discarded water bottle shook, and the water suddenly rushed up into the air, pushing the blade off course and throwing it away from the golem.

Percy stared in shock as Brthanz's sword went sailing away. How had he managed to do that, did it say something about his heritage? Ignoring it for now since he was still in the fight of his life, he reached out to see if he could control the water again. Feeling the tug again, the water responded to his command and flew towards the golem, crashing into it and sending it tumbling down.

Trying for offense, Percy willed the water to form spikes to penetrate the golem's armor. 5 sets of spikes suddenly rushed up from beneath the golem, penetrating its armor and pushing through its chest.

He needed to end this now, Dominic might still be injured but he may be doing something to heal himself if he has regained mana. Percy willed the water to form tight constraints around the prone form of Brthanz, chaining him to the ground and rendering him immobile. Percy was quickly straining as he was holding back the beast, fighting its immense strength as it attempted to break its bonds. Rushing up to the beasts head, he thrust his sword clean through the head.

Wisps of smoke came out of Brthanz's mouth as his eyes lost their glow, before crumbling to dust with the rest of his body. Percy panted, leaning on his sword and trying to catch his breath. He had survived against Brthanz. Ignoring the quickly growing pile of ash that were the remains of Brthanz, Percy looked around for Dominic. Noticing a blood trail moving towards the throne, he stalked along the trail until he rounded the throne, finding Dominic pale and gasping for air as he tried in vain to staunch the bleeding.

"It shouldn't be possible. I shouldn't be able to fall to a pitiful worm like you! You shouldn't even exist, the pact should have prevented it! Mark my words boy, you and your father will regret ever crossing me, I will have your head once I recover, for I am…" Percy swiped his sword through Dominic's neck, as his head rolled away from his pale body. He had had enough of this mad teen. As with all enemies he has defeated, Dominic's body started to turn to ash, leaving the rewards in the pile for Percy's victory. Percy looked at the loot he had gained from defeating the skeletons, Dominic and Brthanz as well as his new notifications.

Wow, that was a lot of activity. After all he had been in the fight of his life their, he should have expected to level up a bunch of his new combat skills, especially since they were low level. A glint in the pile of ash that used to be Dominic caught his eye, and searching through it yielded a beautiful gold and silver band with a magnificent deep green emerald embedded into it.

The Eye of Hecate

A powerful ring that can bind fallen foes to the bearer and turn them into allies; it was created by Hecate. Limit 3 resurrected allies at any time.

Resurrected allies LVL equal to bearer if weaker, 1.5x bearer if stronger

Now this would be useful. Binding his fallen foes to his will and being able to summon them in battle would definitely make his life a lot easier in tough fight like the one he was just in. His only question was who the hell is Hecate? Thinking back on just before the fight, he remembered that his observe claimed that Dominic was the son of a goddess of magic, and he had stolen a powerful artifact from her. Was Hecate his mother then?

He had never heard the name Hecate before, but what unnerved him was that there was a supposed GODDESS in the world, and if that is the case then is she the only one, or is there more of them? That's not a comforting thought. And just how did he control the water? He had never felt power like that before, never bended water to his will, and it was a bit scary to him since he knew no other person in the world that he knew of had this power. The game claims that he isn't human, after all there is still a question mark by his race, and it seems to only compound the fact that he isn't quite human.

This had to be related to his father. Think, Percy, think! OK, the game says that he isn't human, he gets a boost whenever he steps into water which he also seems to be able to control and breathe in, and there may now be gods and goddesses running all over the world as evidenced by Dominic's handy little ring.

"Aargh!" Percy yelled, there still weren't enough pieces to the puzzle for him to put together, but he knew he was getting really close. He couldn't remember anything that could help him right now. Deciding to leave his ruminations on his parentage for another day, Percy walked away from the throne of bones to look for an exit from the dungeon.

Finding an exit behind a set of the stands, he walked through and noticed a glowing triangle much like the one he saw to enter the dungeon. Brushing his hand across it, the triangle started to glow a lot brighter, before part of the cavern ahead of him fell away to reveal the light of the outside. Breathing a sigh of relief to be out of his harrowing ordeal, Percy stepped out into the light.

Whatever, beats having to figure out where he was and stumbling back to school. Looking out to the horizon, he noted that the sun was setting in the distance, meaning he had been under for 4 hours.

Stumbling his way to his room to get some much needed rest, Percy walked in to see Grover already present and doing some homework at his desk.

"Perce, where have you been man, I haven't seen you all day! You look like hell, you good?" Grover questioned, concern. It wasn't usual that Percy came in looking so haggard, had he had a run in with Nancy or something?

"Oh, hey G-man. Yeah I'm good, just a bit tired. Probably gonna take an early night."

"Whoah wait Perce, aren't you forgetting something? Mr. Brunner's homework is due tomorrow man, you can't forget again or he will give you detention for sure!"

"Oh, huh? The homework? Oh, I already finished that earlier today in the library, didn't want to forget, y'know?" Percy yawned and stretched, heading to his bed, ready for a long nights sleep.

"Wait, really? Dang, you were serious about picking up your studies, huh?" Grover exclaimed, smiling at his friend being responsible. "Kinda makes me feel bad I am only starting it now. Alright Perce, I'll try to be quiet so you can sleep. Goodnight!"

"Night, G-man." Percy muttered from his bed. Looking over at his best friend, he used observe to see if his friends level was near his own. Probably not, Grover is pretty meek.
