Harry holds his old- new- wand, and that doesn't really work out. He also buys himself a new owl, a cat familiar, and does some more shopping- oh and threatens Death, but that happens every day.
Harry's POV
After his visit to Gringotts, Harry headed to Ollivander's first. He was a bit anxious as to what wand he would get. Would he still qualify to have the brother wand of Tom Riddle, or with all that changed about him, would he instead get a different wand? If so, then what would happen to the brother wand of Tom Riddle?
Alexander, just like with Gringotts, stood outside as Harry made his way inside of Ollivander's wand shop. It looked just as it did nearly fifty years in the future, when Harry had first gone to Ollivander's to get his very first wand. Harry actually truly missed the small shop because after Ollivander's death, the shop was closed and the wands were transferred elsewhere. As magic became more scarce in the future, as did wands because there were no longer those capable of making wands.
Yet here Harry was, in 1941, standing in Ollivander's and waiting to possibly get his new- or maybe his old- wand.
"Oh, it's been a while since a Peverell has been in here. Hmm." Ollivander stepped down from the rolling ladder and took a good, long look at Harry. As Ollivander looked Harry over, Harry was doing the same to Ollivander. The man looked much younger than he did when Harry had first met him. He appeared to be about thirty to forty years old, with shaggy brown hair that was greying around his temples and fell just past his ears and those same silvery eyes that seemed to shine every time they caught the light.
"I get a familiar feeling from you, have we met before? No, I would remember. What wand have you been using until now?" Ollivander held out his hand over the desk between himself and Harry.
"Oh, I haven't been." Harry explained awkwardly, his hand moving to rub at the back of his neck, a nervous tick he never had been able to get rid of even in all his many hundreds of years of living.
Harry was sure that Ollivander wanted to look at the wand he should have been using until now, but with the memories provided by Death, the Hieronymus from before didn't exactly have the time or ability to get a wand while being on the run.
"Ah! Wandless magic, then? Very talented… I think I realize why I find you familiar, I think I have just the wand for you!" Ollivander disappeared to the many rows of wands as Harry waited anxiously.
Would it be his old wand? Would it still work? But he had long since changed since he last held that wand, and it was known that the wand chooses the wizard. For some odd reason, Harry felt that his old wand wouldn't choose him this time around.
Ollivander came out holding a very familiar box with an even more familiar wand just inside of it. The older man carried it like it was something extremely precious and pulled the wand from its box and handed it gently over to Harry.
"Here, the reason I found you so familiar is because I feel you will do great things, just as I felt about the owner of the brother wand to this wand."
There it was, all eleven inches of his old- new?- wand. Holly wood, with Fawke's phoenix tail feather as its core. While the grip of the wand was very familiar, Harry could already tell that this wand was not his- not anymore at least.
Without any need for prompting, Harry waved the wand then let out a shriek as the wand- still in his hand- shattered.
Wood pieces flew everywhere and Harry could only stand there with wide eyes.
"I- what- I'm sorry!" Harry blurted out as he looked over at the equally shocked Ollivander.
"Definitely not, absolutely not… I don't even know if that's salvageable… How… curious ." The sound of the word curious sounded much different from when Ollivander had said it when Harry had been young. This time around it sounded more lost and even a bit irritated than holding actual curiosity.
"I will have to be more choosy. My father wrote about how choosy you Peverells are with wands, never heard of a wand exploding, though." Ollivander muttered under his breath as he disappeared into the back again.
This time Ollivander came back carrying two more boxes, both much longer than the previous box.
Ollivander, with a lot more care, pulled out another wand. Harry eyed it carefully, noting that the wand was most likely made of Alder, though Harry wasn't sure. The wand was also probably a good inch or two longer than his old wand, so probably somewhere in the ballpark of being twelve or thirteen inches.
Harry gave that wand a wave and absolutely nothing happened. No spark, no wand boxes flying off the shelves, and no glass vases breaking.
"Well, not that one, clearly. Then this one should be perfect." Ollivander plucked the other wand from his hand and replaced it with a brand new one.
This wand was only just a bit longer than his old wand, and Harry couldn't tell what kind of wood it was made of due to the stain used on the wand. He did make note of green leaves carved onto the handle and vine-like carvings along the handle of the wand.
Harry didn't have to even wave the wand, when much like when his old wand had picked him, a surge of power ran through the wand shop. The lights dimmed briefly, then went back to normal.
"Extremely curious that wand would choose you. In fact, I would much rather not give out that wand, but I feel in your hands, it would do good."
Harry glanced from his new- and not the old- wand, to Ollivander with some trepidation. Was the wand that bad?
"I remember every wand, Mister Peverell. And this wand that has picked you has the most interesting history to it. Yew wood, eleven and one third inches, and a dragon heartstring. The dragon that heartstring came from was a particularly nasty Hungarian Horntail that had killed four wizards before it had been taken down. Admittedly, I would never have used such a heartstring, but something told me I should… I see why now. I think you are capable of doing many great things, young man. You just merely need to apply yourself and you could probably change the wizarding world as we know it. I hope you prove that I was right to use that heartstring." Ollivander looked at the wand and Harry could tell the older man really was wary of the wand.
Harry could only think of how much Dumbledore would be even more suspicious of him if he knew. Thankfully, Tom Riddle's wand wasn't infamous yet, so Dumbledore had no reason to be sniffing around the brother wand of Tom's. Or, at least, Harry hoped Dumbledore wouldn't sniff around. He was perfectly okay with avoiding Dumbledore for the rest of Dumbledore's life and he didn't need the old git bothering him because of some unfounded- or maybe founded, but Harry wouldn't admit to that- suspicions.
"Well, I hope I live up to your expectations sir. How much for the wand and a holster?" Harry gripped his new- actually new, and not his old- wand and looked it over carefully. Yew, which was considered a rarer wood used in wands and was also considered powerful and associated with death, with a dragon heartstring, which for a core was considered magically powerful, if not flamboyant. The fact it was a Hungarian Horntail's heartstring could also mean many things, but Harry had a feeling it meant his wand was going to be rather… aggressive. Considering all he had gone through, he did feel this wand was a good fit for him.
"4 Galleons for the wand, 2 for a holster. Feel free to pick a holster and leave the money on the counter, Mister Peverell." With that, Ollivander wandered towards the back, and as Harry looked down he noticed the pieces of his old wand had disappeared. Chances were, Ollivander was going to attempt to salvage the wand, but from the looks of how many pieces it had been in, Harry very much doubted the wand could be saved.
As for the holster, Harry picked a plain black one with silver highlights that also had a small crest that could be charmed. Seeing as Harry wasn't about to put the Hallows crest on his holster and get unwanted attention, Harry just stuck with putting whatever house he ended up in on his holster.
With the holster strapped to his arm and the wand in place, Harry placed 6 galleons on the counter and stepped outside.
Next on Harry's agenda was to get a trunk, which took no time at all. He picked out a simple walnut wood trunk and wandlessly shrunk it down to fit into his pocket. He aptly ignored the warning look from Alexander Moody, only giving a sheepish smile. He assumed Alexander must have assumed Harry wasn't used to having to not use magic outside of Hogwarts yet, and was thankful he wasn't verbally warned.
After that, Harry headed into Madam Malkin's Robes for All Occasions and picked up his uniforms. He got several pieces of each part of the required Hogwarts' uniform. Seven white button up shirts, three sets of the work or outer robes, seven vests, seven pairs of black slacks, two pairs of dress robes, two winter robes, some dress shoes, and lastly the ties that would be enchanted upon him being given his house.
The next few things Harry picked up were mostly his school supplies, such as quills, his books, some cauldrons, and other such things for the classes he was planning to take that year.
He stopped into Eeylop's Owl Emporium and felt his heart clench as he remembered Hedwig. Sadly, she was dead in his past, and had yet to be born just yet in his future. Harry decided on a melanistic barn owl that he named Hed and all the supplies the young male owl would need. He found the owl to be rather quiet, but he had those intelligent eyes that Harry liked so much in Hedwig.
Harry continued to meander about, stopping briefly in Magical Menagerie, mostly to look around than to actually buy something.
It wasn't until he was starting to pass by a long haired black cat that Death had said something.
Him, get him. He looks just like your animagus form, and would be a great cover if you needed it.
'Sure you aren't just saying that because he's a black cat?'
Harry looked the large cat over and was shocked to find eyes that eerily resembled the color of his own eyes staring right back at him.
'Oh I see.'
Harry quickly decided upon buying the cat and all his needed supplies. Harry was lost on what to name the little guy, and just went with Death's suggestion of naming him Mort.
'How very creative.'
I'm not the one who will be looked at oddly because of the name, so I don't see why you're poking fun at me.
'I hate when you're right.'
Harry's final stop was Twilfitt and Tattings, where he picked up plenty of casual clothes to last him for a few weeks. That way, when he had to stay somewhere over the summer, he could at least have plenty of clothes to change into. He also got plenty of new underwear, socks, and two pairs of black converse-like shoes.
By the end of his shopping, he'd spent about 300 galleons, but at least he got everything he felt he needed.
"Finally done?" Alexander Moody looked over Harry and easily noticed that a lot of what should be on the cart Harry was pushing around were missing. He could easily put two and two together and realized that a lot of what Harry bought was in the shrunken down trunk somewhere on Harry's person.
"I understand you're adept at wandless magic, but you should refrain from doing magic unless you're at Hogwarts or in mortal danger from now on." Alexander warned as he brought Harry towards the floo to make sure he made it back to Hogwarts safely.
"Seeing as my job is finished, I hope I will not have to escort you around again, Peverell." Alexander stated bluntly as Harry offered a dull smile.
'I didn't particularly want you around me anyway.'
Harry kept his thoughts to himself and quickly floo'd back to Hogwarts, stopped briefly to let Dippet know he was back, and headed to his room to organize his newly bought items.
The room Harry had been provided was a very simple out-of-the-way room with little to no decorations within. Chances are the room- and the rooms nearby- were meant for visiting people. The room was not small by any means, just rather bare aside from the bed, place for a trunk, a dresser, and a wardrobe.
The first thing Harry did was allow his new owl- Hed- out of his cage to fly around. Then he set about setting up a place for Mort, but didn't make it too fancy as he'd be moving into a dorm in about a week anyway.
After making sure Hed and Mort were fine, Harry quickly unshrunk his trunk, and put it at the foot of the bed where the stand for it was. He opened the trunk and used a wandless Wingardium Leviosa to take everything out of the trunk.
Once the trunk was clear- and Harry was certain no one would stop by to bother him- he quickly went about charming the trunk with an undetectable extension charm. He made sure to make the trunk as comfy as he could manage it, with a few rooms that could serve as bedrooms, a kitchen (which he would get supplies for from the kitchen in Hogwarts), a room for potions, a storage room for those potions, and a large area meant for a library (since he had half a mind to infiltrate the Black home and duplicate the books there, should he get a chance, in the meantime, he would set about duplicating books from the Room of Requirement).
Once Harry was happy with the layout of his trunk, he placed a false bottom on the trunk and layered all of his school supplies on top. Then he set about warding the trunk to kingdom come- so that no one could open the trunk unless he gave them explicit permission. Perhaps it was a bit paranoid of him to do, but after being on the run while trying to destroy the Horcruxes, Harry never really got rid of his paranoia. Even hundreds of years later, he kept everything he owned locked up tighter than Fort Knox.
Plus, Dumbledore was already suspicious of Harry, and he wouldn't put it past that old man to try and get into his things. Just as Dumbledore was looking at Harry, Harry was looking right back at him. He wasn't entirely sure how Dumbledore went about manipulating Tom to become such an evil thing .
Chances were, Dumbledore knew of Tom's fear of death- as for how, he wasn't sure, perhaps a Boggart?- and planted that book with Horcruxes for Tom to read. But if Tom wasn't evil from the beginning, why and how did he decide to seek out books about Dark Magic? Did Tom also have permission to be in the restricted section, or did he sneak in? One would think there were wards to prevent students from entering, or at least alerting someone that a student had entered such an area.
In fact, when Harry had snuck into the restricted section, he had needed the aid of the invisibility cloak- something Tom Riddle did not have.
Then again, Tom Riddle was- is- a genius, and probably had managed to charm himself in some fashion to not be noticed. That or maybe he did manage to get permission, seeing how Tom was described as a, "good student who was liked by everyone."
That still brings Harry back to the, "why." Why did Tom Riddle seek out dark magic?
It could have been the first generation of Death Eaters, perhaps, that got him onto that road.
But why would they do such a thing? The first generation of Death Eaters were not nearly as smart or strong as Tom, though they had better connections than he did, and they were still so young, just barely fourteen at this point.
Harry definitely wouldn't put it past Dumbledore to "magically hint" either Orion Black (who would have knowledge of dark magic from the Black Library) or even Abraxas Malfoy to bring up dark magic to Tom Riddle.
Harry groaned and ran a hand through his hair before flopping back onto his temporary bed.
If he was to figure out the hows and whys of Tom Riddle going down the road of dark magic, he needed to familiarize himself with the current politics of this time.
In order to do that Harry would have to- Harry shivered for a moment- socialize with the children, with the Slytherin children.
You will be placed in Slytherin, so it shouldn't be too hard to get close to them.
'I'm what?'
You are going to be placed in Slytherin. In your new bloodline you're more closely related to Salazar than you are Godric, I'm afraid. Not to mention I can see and hear your thoughts, you're far more scheming this time around than brave.
'Well that's just bleedin' lovely.'
It does make your job far easier, though.
'Good point. Ugh… I don't look forward to school again.'
Well, you can familiarize yourself with the subjects again. It shouldn't be too difficult.
'I am still pissed at how I went from dealing with a life with one Dark Lord to being chased by another Dark Lord in this life.'
I figured you had experience in it.
'If I could punt you I would.'
Harry sighed and changed out of his day clothes into his night clothes and fell asleep. Hopefully the next week or so would be calm and he wouldn't have any reason to run into Dumbledore. Then he could get sorted and debate on how he would try and prevent Tom from being manipulated by the insane Dumbledore.
A/N; if you want pictures of his new wand, owl, and cat, then head over to AO3.
So like... four is the number of death in some cultures, because the pronunciation of four and death are very similar, so that's why the Hungarian Horntail killed four wizards. Death legit just making his mark in every which way he can on Harry at this point.
Lemme tell you, I really debated with myself on if I should give Harry his old wand or a brand new one. I get that if he had his old wand, it'd be a connection to Tom, but with how I'm planning things, Harry won't need the wand to get Tom's attention (much to Harry's dismay).
Adding onto the previous point, I was always of the mind that wands could perform a sort-of soul magic, in order to know the wizard they choose. I feel that Harry's old wand knew that it no longer suited him, but Harry- or Tom- could be the only owner of said wand. I felt Harry no longer fit with that wand, given all the changes he's been through. He's no longer that optimistic Gryffindor, but more of a jaded Slytherin at this point. The Gryffindor in him might come back, but never in the way he used to be. Also I kinda wanted to remove that whole "Tom and Harry are destined" thing. If (who am I kidding, they will end up together lmfaooo) they are to end up together, it would be because it was something Harry/Tom decided on. Not some such destiny crap.
Oh and the whole "magic detection charm" exists still, but I think the charm (at least in the 1940s) was only placed on the wands, instead of the wizard/witch like in the 1990s. Perhaps Tom was the reason the charm was changed from wand to wizard/witch, eventually. Idk.
Oh, as for Harry being more closely related to Slytherin as opposed to Gryffindor, I just mean that the relation to Slytherin is "closer" to Harry/Hieronymus than the relation to Gryffindor is. The relation is still super far off, however. From what I researched, the Peverell's only connection to the founders of Hogwarts was actually Salazar. However, with that connection, Harry/Hieronymus wouldn't be blood related to Salazar (thus the reason he has a relation through his mother, instead). As for Godric's relation (via the Peverells), it would have been earlier (or higher up, in this case) in the family tree than the Salazar relation (to Harry/Hieryonymus' mother) and would not be linked directly through Godric, so think either a grandchild or a cousin x amount of times removed. I swear, wizards and their incest make things mad confusing lmfao. As for why Harry's related to Godric… I mean why not.
