Author's Note: Thought I'd put out an extra chapter to make up for the long delay with updates.
Disclaimer: I do not own InuYasha or Yashahime.
Chapter 9: Monkey Business
Kagome and Kaede were firing their sacred arrows at the oncoming soldiers while the demon slayers attempted to hold them off. The arrows were only making dents in the enemy's ranks however. Meanwhile quite a few of the demon slayers had fallen before the blasters wielded by the soldiers. They had been holding the line so far, but it was starting to turn into a losing battle. At the moment the only one in the village who had the firepower to do any real damage was Inuyasha, and he was still otherwise occupied.
"It is a pity you sent Moroha off into the forest with Towa and her friends," Kaede remarked as she fired another arrow. "We could have used her assistance."
Kagome nodded as she shot an arrow of her own. "You're probably right, but Towa needed help protecting Suzumi-chan. Besides, I'd rather not have my daughter caught up in this battle if I can avoid it."
Hisui threw his giant boomerang, the hiraikotsu at the few cyber demons still marching towards the village. The weapon tore through them as it spun through the air before returning to his hand. Meanwhile Inuyasha was still clashing blades with Setsuna not far away. Not once during the entire fight had Inuyasha used his Wind Scar or the other ranged attacks of his sword.
"Why do you hold back against me?" Setsuna asked as she parried one of Inuyasha's swings.
"Because I don't wanna kill you, ya idiot!" Inuyasha responded. "You may not believe it, but we're family!"
"What a naïve fool!" Setsuna declared as she slashed her naginata through the air. "Scourge of Swallows!"
Mid way through the slash, a burst of green light sparked from the tip of Setsuna's blade and split into a flock of glowing green birds. Inuyasha jumped back to avoid the attack but one of the swallows managed to graze his arm. Just then the hiraikotsu flew down and struck the ground between Inuyasha and Setsuna. Hisui then jumped off Kirara and approached the weapon.
"Lord Inuyasha, you should go help Lady Kagome and the others," Hisui told him as he grabbed his weapon. "I could see from the air they were struggling. Let me deal with this one."
Inuyasha frowned. "Fine kid, but don't kill her! Just keep her busy until I can come back and knock some sense into her!"
Hisui nodded. "I will hold her at bay."
Inuyasha rushed off into the village. Setsuna attempted to chase after him only for Kirara to come down from above and get in her way.
"I'm your opponent now," Hisui declared. "I will not let you step one foot into the village."
Setsuna pointed the blade of her naginata at Hisui. "Very well. But you will soon regret getting in my way."
In the year 5000, Tamamo no Mae was lounging on the red couch she used as her throne watching images from the various battles in the feudal era displayed by three large floating spheres. The footage was being sent by three drones she had ordered sent into the past along with her soldiers. General Hagino stood at the base of the steps leading up to the vixen's throne watching the footage along with her.
"Milady, forgive me for asking, but do you think it was wise to send this many of our troops back to the past for this mission?" Hagino asked.
"No, but it is entertaining," Tamamo no Mae responded. "Besides, no one is going to bat an eye if a little village like that is massacred. Villages like those were slaughtered every day." She chuckled. "Those were good times."
"I…actually wasn't worried about the village, milady. I was more concerned about our soldiers. We've already lost a great deal of them in this undertaking."
"So? We manufacture thousands of those soldiers every day? Hagino, are you worried we might lose?"
Hagino nervously pulled on his collar. "Not at all, Empress. I'm just pointing out the fact it's always a poor choice to waste resources."
"Well they're my resources to waste. Remember Hagino, you and everything in this empire is mine to do with as I please."
"Yes, Empress. I am as always your humble possession."
Tamamo no Mae smirked. "Now then, let's see what sort of show these mongrels protecting little Suzumi put on for us."
Kazuki had already taken cover in the brush as Moroha prepared to square off against Godo. The monkey demon held out his staff in front of him as he waited for Moroha to make her move. Rather than draw her sword, Moroha grabbed her bow and threaded a single arrow.
"Let's see how you like my sacred arrow!" Moroha declared as she shot her arrow.
The arrow began to glow with a dazzling aura as it flew through the air towards Godo. The monkey demon however began spinning his staff like a propeller in front of him. In the end the arrow was deflected and broken into pieces.
"A quarter-demon with spiritual powers. You are indeed quite the oddity," Godo remarked. "But a quarter-demon with spirit powers is only a quarter-demon still. It's disgraceful that Setsuna was driven into a corner by such an opponent. I trained her far better than that."
"Oh, so you trained Setsuna, eh?" Moroha asked as she put away her bow.
"I was also the one who handled her indoctrination to the academy when she was but a child. She was an interesting project. I thought I might actually be able to make something out of the little half-demon, but as I suspected the powers of a halfbreed like her can only be taken so far. The only reason Setsuna became a member of the Nine Tails was because the Empress found her entertaining."
"You shouldn't knock us half-demons and quarter-demons," Moroha told him as she drew her sword. "We're stronger than ya think."
"All I hear is the pitiful boasting of a small animal trying to intimidate a predator that's cornered her."
"See if you think this is boasting!" Moroha responded as she raised her sword. "Crimson Dragon Wave!"
A dragon of red light flew from Moroha's sword at Godo. Just like when the arrow came at him though, Godo spun his staff like a propeller. Moroha's attack was pulled into the force of the spinning staff, and suddenly the red dragon flew from the staff back at Moroha. The dark-haired quarter-demon was forced to jump out of the way of the attack at the last second to avoid getting cut to ribbons by her own attack.
"Any attack using demon energy I can easily reflect back with my staff," Godo declared. "You cannot touch me, quarter-demon."
"Well this sucks," Moroha declared. "Looks like I've got my work cut out for me."
Towa was having just as much of a hard time facing Nekohime. As soon as the battle had started, the lashes of Nekohime's cat o' nine tails had grown in length and started burning with blue flames. Right away Towa had been forced to run around the battlefield as the cat demon cracked her whip. The lashes flew everywhere and Towa was forced to focus on jumping out of their path. The whole time Suzumi had been hiding in the bushes, and all she could do was watch.
'Dammit!' Towa mentally cursed as she jumped out of the way of another flaming lash. 'I can't even get close to her!'
Nekohime laughed with delight. "This is fun! I wonder how long it'll be before you finally tire out?"
Towa landed on the ground and narrowly avoided one of the lashes of Nekohime's whip. She then thought she saw an opening and attempted to charge in, but Nekohime flicked her wrist and the lashes of her whip knocked Towa to the ground, with one lash nearly striking her face.
"Ah-ah-ah! Pretty reckless just trying to charge straight in," Nekohime remarked. "Of course darling Setsuna-chan always makes the same mistake whenever we spar. My darling little sister has always been so predictable."
"What…did you call her?" Towa asked through gritted teeth as she got up.
"Well we're not related by blood, but I've always thought of her as a little sister. I've had to help her out so many times, just like right now. Here I am trying to clean up her mess. Honestly, I don't know what she'd ever do without me."
"You…take that back," Towa spoke, her hands trembling with rage.
"Pardon?" Nekohime asked with a tilt of her head.
"The only big sister Setsuna has…is me! She doesn't need a freak like you for anything!"
Once again Towa blindly charged in, but just like before she was knocked to the ground by Nekohime's whip.
Nekohime shook her head. "Tsk, tsk, tsk. You don't learn very well, do you? Ah well. You're about to die anyway, so what's it matter?"
With her arrows and Crimson Dragon Wave attack having proved useless, Moroha decided to try fighting Godo in close quarters. Unfortunately this approach had not been going any better. Godo had skillfully parried each slash from Moron's blade with his staff. The monkey demon wasn't giving her a single opening. Eventually Godo found an opening however and shoved the end of his staff into her gut. Before Moroha could completely recover, Godo threw his staff into the air.
The monkey flipped onto his hands and started wielding his staff using his feet. Moroha finally recovered but once again could not find a single opening with her sword. Godo soon found an opening though and used his tail to smack Moroha in the face. Moroha was knocked to the ground.
"Now you're just showing off!" Moroha complained as she got back up.
Godo threw his staff back in the air, flipped back onto his feet and caught his staff with his hands. "Only to illustrate just how powerless you truly are. Surrender and I will give you a merciful death."
Suddenly Kazuki popped out of the bushes and threw two of his homemade smoke bombs into the air. They both exploded upon landing and covered the area in a thick cloud of grey smoke. Moroha took advantage of the situation and fell back. Godo stood where he was and listened to his surroundings. The monkey demon didn't hear a sound coming from around him, but he still reacted just in time when Moroha's blade swung towards him from behind. Once again Moroha's sword was blocked by the monkey demon's staff.
"No way!" Moroha exclaimed.
"You tried attacking me from behind, just like all of my opponents do," Godo responded. "Even Setsuna. It is the obvious move."
Kazuki popped out of the bushes again. "Moroha! Close your eyes!"
Moroha did as instructed right as Kazuki threw out another bomb. This one made a blinding flash as it hit the ground. Godo shrieked and squeezed his eyes shut as soon as the flash went off. Meanwhile Moroha fell back and ran into the bushes, finding Kazuki by his scent alone.
"The smoke bombs I knew about, but what was the other thing just now?" Moroha asked as she opened her eyes.
"Homemade flash-bang," Kazuki explained, blinking. "Might've made it a little too bright actually. Anyway, we need to figure out some way to beat this guy."
"Already have," Moroha declared as she pulled out the clamshell containing her grandmother's rouge.
"Wait!" Kazuki told her as he quickly put his hand on Moroha's wrist, stopping her from opening the clamshell. "I really don't think using your grandma's rouge is a good idea. It may boost your strength to match Godo's, but only for a short time. Plus it isn't just that Godo's strong, he's skilled in some sort of martial arts. Even with your power-up, he'd still easily be able to counter all your moves. Plus once the rouge's effects wore off you'd be wide open for him to deliver the finishing blow."
Moroha let out a frustrated groan. "Dammit! You're right. So what do I do? Fighting him normally is only getting me beat up, he can block my arrows, and if I use my Crimson Dragon Wave he can just send it right back at me."
Kazuki sighed and put a hand to his chin. "To bad he doesn't have any attacks you can reflect back at him."
Suddenly Moroha was struck with an idea. "Wait! There might be one thing I can try. It's a trick I saw my dad do when I was about seven. Don't know if it'll work though."
"At this point what do we have to lose?"
Moroha nodded and emerged from the bushes. The smoke finally cleared as she stood and faced Godo.
"So you've finally come out to face your death I see," Godo observed.
"Actually I came out so I could finally finish you off!" Moroha declared as she raised her sword. "Crimson Dragon Wave!"
Another dragon of red light flew from Moroha's blade as she swung it downward. Just like before though, Godo began spinning his staff.
"How quickly we forget," Godo remarked as he sent the dragon of light right back at Moroha. Then again, perhaps you've chosen to die by your own attack."
"Nah. I just thought I'd see how you like getting a taste of your own medicine!" Moroha responded as she started spinning her sword. "Crimson Backlash Wave!"
More crimson energy erupted from Moron's spinning sword and intercepted the oncoming dragon. The energies became entangled with one another and traveled down the path of the reflected attack. Godo suddenly found it hard to keep spinning his staff. In another few seconds the staff crumbled to pieces in his hands. Immediately after the energy began to twist around him.
"Impossible!" Godo shouted as the rebounded attack began to shred him to pieces. "Beaten…by a mere quarter-demon!"
"When ya get to Hell, make sure you tell 'em who sent ya," Moroha responded, grinning. "It was Moroha the Demon Killer!"
Godo let out one final shriek as the last of his body was torn to pieces. When the energy from the attack finally subsided there was nothing left of the monkey demon. With Godo slain, Kazuki emerged from the bushes.
"And that's what ya get!" Moroha declared as she sheathed her sword.
"You are unbelievable," Kazuki declared. "I'm so glad I recorded all that."
Moroha turned to him and grinned. "C'mon! Let's get back to the village. I'm sure my parents and the others could use some help right about now."
Hagino could hardly believe his eyes when he had seen Godo getting torn to pieces on one of the floating spheres in Tamamo no Mae's throne room. He had known and respected Godo for a number of years. The monkey had been by far one of the most skilled members of the Nine Tails, and yet he had just been torn to ribbons by the attack of a weak quarter-demon girl. Suddenly Hagino was startled by a sound that sent chills down his spine. Tamamo no Mae was laughing at her henchman's death with glee.
"Oh how delightful!" Tamamo no Mae declared. "This is turning out to be a wonderful little show!"
"But Empress! Lord Godo has just lost his life!" Hagino pointed out.
"So what? His life means nothing to me. If he can be defeated, he serves me no purpose. As for this quarter-demon girl, I think she'll make an especially good toy."
Towa had once again gone back to trying to dodge the lashes from Nekohime's cat o' nine tails. She had calmed down somewhat and had given up on just charging in blindly at Nekohime. Even so, Towa was starting to get very frustrated. She knew simply dodging the whips wasn't getting her anywhere, and it was only a matter of time before she ran out of steam.
"It doesn't have to be this way you know," Nekohime told her. "Just be a good girl and hand over Suzumi. Then all of this can be over."
"No way in hell!" Towa declared. "I'm not letting you take Suzumi. And one way or another…I'm going to beat you and take Setsuna back!"
