The Four of Us

Cry Baby and Wiped Out! by The Neighborhood

Unlike Rukia and Isane, Unohana and Rangiku shared not a bed nor a couch that night. Each spent the night alone. Each assumed that the other might want a bit of space. And each would have much rather spent the night together.

Rangiku sat up in bed drinking alone. Not drinking excessively but drinking enough to get a buzz and make herself a bit drowsy. She thought about Unohana and the progress Unohana was making in their relationship. How she was slowly but steadily becoming more comfortable in their new relationship.

It was exciting and new to Rangiku. Exciting to see, to be a part of, to be the cause of. And for the first time in their young relationship Rangiku thought seriously about her intentions with their relationship. She told Captain Hitsugaya that morning that she felt this was a relationship that could last. But would it? She thought that if Unohana felt the way she did, and that if they shared the intention to make it last then it would. If they shared the intention to cultivate their bond it would grow. Seeds of trust and lust had sprouted and could one day bloom into love. It seemed evident to her that Unohana had similar intentions. At least on some level and so she felt happy and optimistic about their future.

She wondered if one day Unohana would reach a level where they could be completely open as a couple. If one day their being together would feel as normal to everyone else as it did to her. Then she wondered if she made a mistake in telling Toshiro of their union. Would Unohana have wanted her not to tell him? Or would she be ok with her sharing her giddy excitement with him. He who knew her very well just as Isane knew Unohana well. Captain was her professional companion and mentor. Rangiku considered a close friend of hers as well. Granted, she thought, Isane physically witnessed a kiss between the two of them outside of the Women's Association meeting, whereas she chose to tell Hitsugaya. But that said, Unohana and Isane were far closer colleagues than she and Hitsugaya were. She was not his protégé, and while she admired him in a way, it was not to Isane's level of devotion or adoration. So perhaps she thought, Hitsugaya might not have needed to know just then. But she was overthinking things.

She thought on it a bit more and then decided that it would be ridiculous for them to try and keep it a secret from their immediate colleagues. At least they should know. But that it was perfectly reasonable to keep things unknown to people outside their circle. They did not need to know anything. She figured Unohana would prefer things that way. And she was fine with that. At least for now.

She thought fleetingly that she had once again found love with someone whose inner demons haunted them. But Unohana was not as haunted as Gin was. Haunted was not even the word for it really she thought. He was dominated by it, guided by his corruption. And only rarely did the goodness and innocence of the boy she met long long ago shine through it. It was opposite for Unohana. Unohana controlled it and had mostly put it behind her Rangiku thought. She was far more sound of mind she thought. She had reinvented herself, renamed herself. And this was good Rangiku thought.

Rangiku wondered for a moment if she had a thing for broken people or perhaps people who were previously broken. She wondered if she wanted to fix them. To quell their anxieties and exorcise their demons with her touch and her love. She knew it was not the reason she wanted to be with Unohana but accepted that it could have played a role in her initial attraction. That night when Unohana told her the abridged story of her life. The night they first kissed. How she cried when she shared her story. And how Unohana made the tears go away. How Unohana turned misery into catharsis. Replaced loneliness with emotional intimacy and companionship. How she gave her the listening ear she did not know she sought when she first meandered over to the Fourth that night. And then she thought of how their emotional intimacy became physical that night. Her body felt a certain nice feeling reflecting on their first time together. Reflecting on the magnificence of their sexual awakening. How they held each other close when they finished. Kissing tenderly. How she fell asleep in her arms. Arms she wanted to be wrapped up in right now.

Her heart was fluttery, her soul felt warm, and yet she felt cold in this bed without her in it. She drank a little more then laid her head down. She touched the spot in the bed Unohana occupied the night before. She giggled. And despite being alone she felt loved. She wondered if somewhere over in the Fourth, Unohana might be thinking about her.

And she was.

Unohana lie in bed worrying about her future with Rangiku. She worried about a lot of things all at once. For one she worried that Rangiku may grow tired of her reservation eventually and leave her for someone more compatible in spirit. She worried of this even though she knew damn well that they were compatible. Rangiku enlivened her, brightened her life. And she, well she did something for Rangiku to make her want her. And while she knew that Rangiku wanted to be with her, someone who had also wanted to be with her, someone who had been with her, grown with her. Someone she had pulled from the edge of pit, the void of despair and solitude and who pulled her from the same edge at times. Senjumaru who she thought was her soulmate lost something in her heart for her and left her. After centuries together, Senjumaru did what she worried Rangiku would do now only a few weeks into their union if she failed to give her the level of commitment or the kind of relationship she wanted. Senjumaru did seek love and companionship in someone else. But Senjumaru did not leave Unohana for her lack of trying or commitment or dedication. She was a good partner to her, a good wife to her, even if not legally so.

She reminded herself that she should not force anything or hasten anything in their relationship. That she should not try to be someone she was not or behave in a way was unlike herself for Rangiku's sake or for the sake of not losing her. Betraying oneself for a partner would be wrong, well intended as it might be. A good partner would want her as she was. Accept her for who she was. And Rangiku obviously did accept and want her for who she was. All of who she was.

She wondered if she had already betrayed herself in their brief time together. If she for a moment tried to be something she wasn't or do something she didn't want to do. She felt that while she did push herself some in the beginning she had not betrayed herself in doing so and she resolved not to.

She worried about hurting Rangiku especially considering that Rangiku was hurt before too. Her own wounds were old scars in her heart, but Rangiku's were still fresh. Together she thought they both might heal something in each other. She felt she did not need healing, but she wanted that for Rangiku. Wanted Rangiku to feel whole again. To have what her heart wanted for so long. She thought again about the extent she began this relationship for Rangiku's sake. She mulled over the thought and concluded that she did it mostly for her in the beginning. She was herself throughout. At no point did she do anything she did not want to. But she did it for her. She indulged in her curiosity for her. To give her companionship and make her feel wanted. And she did it to feel young and wild and free again, just like Rangiku. But it was not like that anymore. Their relationship had quickly become special. Something balaced. It would not be healthy if their relationship remained one sided and she held on for Rangiku's sake. Or if Rangiku held on for hers for that matter.

She was happy that she listened less and less to the little voice in her head. The nagging voice that worried and preyed upon her fears. She liked the rush she felt when she was with Rangiku. The care, the affection, the warmth they shared. And she knew that with time her worries and concerns about their union would go away. She felt it was natural to be concerned about the vulnerability each had opened their hearts to. And she felt that in time, it too would go away. She was absolutely certain of the purity in Rangiku's heart and intentions. And she was certain of hers. She was optimistic now. Excited for their future together and whatever it may contain. Her worries of this night were gone. She felt happy and grateful. And she looked forward to seeing Rangiku again soon.

She whispered "Goodnight Kiku." to her lover faraway in the Tenth. And was soon asleep, warm thoughts transitioning almost seamlessly into her dreams.

. . .

Rukia's week with Ukitake went by quickly. The regular routine of her life that she was used to was suddenly changed. She was particularly surprised by the volume of her new paperwork responsibilities. Overall, however, nothing was too tedious and time consuming. She still felt a bit bad for Kiyone and Sentarou both being passed over for the promotion. But was glad for their sake as well as hers that they would split the administrative workload three ways. Ukitake did what he could, and was certainly the face of the 13th Division. But with his health being as it was she would have to carry most of the weight of Captainship on her shoulders. It was this that she found most daunting.

But she went forward with confidence in herself and the good people that surrounded her in the 13th. Grateful that she would be trusted with such a responsibility. Honored by it too. Happy to make Isane proud of her. Happy that Byakuya was proud of her too in is own way.

And so she stood, nervous, excited, and eager, before Captain Yamamoto in the First Division Captains Assembly Hall. To the left stood all Captains in a row. Sui Feng all the way down to her own Juushiro Ukitake standing closest to her. And across from them on Yamamoto's right stood all the Lieutenants. Chojiro Sasakibe to Nemu Kurotsuchi. Each Lieutenant, standing exactly across from their Captain with the exception of Sasikabe. Of course, no one stood across from Ukitake. That spot would today become hers.

A servant arrived bearing a simple and yet beautiful black box. They handed it to Yamamoto bowed and left.

Two loud pounds of General Yamamoto's cane sword echoed through the halls and thus, Rukia's promotion ceremony began.

"Captains and Vice-Captains," he boomed.

"I have summoned you here today for yet another promotion ceremony. This time, for a new vice-captain. It is important in this time of peace that we continue to fortify our forces. That we continue to train, remain strong, alert, and ready. That we do not take this time of peace for granted and rest on our laurels. For a new enemy will arise one day. A new threat to the worlds whose balance and safety is our mission to protect. It is to that end that we have reinstated the fine Captains Rojuro Otoribashi, Shinji Hirako, and Kensei Muguruma into our ranks." He said.

Rukia stood as stoic as she could as she and all else present took his words. The calm of her face giving no indication of the emotions she was feeling and the thoughts rushing through her mind. Isane couldn't help but beam with pride and admiration, standing proper facing forward as she was. Renji and Ukitake visibly looked proud as well. Unohana smiled a little pretty smile as she listened. Unohana liked these new developments and was happy for Rukia. Unohana could feel Isane's energy so vividly. And though Isane stood exactly across from her and looked in her direction, her head slightly bowed respectfully, she could tell that all of Isane's attention was directed at Rukia. This too made Unohana happy to behold.

"Rukia Kuchiki has served the Gotei 13 well. She has sacrificed for the Gotei 13 and the greater good of Soul Society and all other planes of existence, voluntarily and involuntarily. She serves with honor and valor. She has long since served beside the Vice-Captains of the Gotei 13 and so today, she shall become the Vice-Captain of the 13th division under Captain Jushiro Ukitake."

"Jushiro. Come forth." Yamamoto said.

Captain Ukitake looked at Rukia with a smile as he departed from his position in the order and walked between the rows of Shinigami towards Yamamoto.

"Take this badge and present it to your new Vice-Captain." Yamamoto instructed.

Ukitake complied with the instruction then called Rukia forth.

She walked forward, still looking calm and proper as ever. She could feel Zaraki sizing her up as she walked past him. Naturally wanting to try and get a feel for her strength and power. Not that she would be any stronger than she was before her promotion anyway. She felt a positive energy from Renji as she walked past him, knowing that he was happy for his old friend. She felt nothing from Byakuya but she knew he felt something positive as well. She struggled to not look at her sweet Isane, whose loving energy, whose pride, whose light and happiness and admiration emanated palpably to her. So strong it was that she felt nothing from Unohana as she walked past.

There was a general air of positive energy to the room. Pretty much all present were happy to see her be recognized for her hard work and service and be promoted. But the energy that shone above the rest was that of Isane's. Rukia's third eye remained locked onto her and she longed to be with her again soon. To reflect upon this moment in privacy and solitude. But before that, this moment in her life, this ceremony would need to end. Her journey down the aisle ended and she stood before Ukitake now. She looked up at him feeling honored. She again felt disbelief that this was happening. Wordlessly, Ukitake presented the open topped box to her with outstretched arms. In it lie her Lieutenants badge. The number 13 of her division in raised text.

"Take it, wear it with pride. Let it be a reminder of all that you have done, all that you will do, and all that your efforts are worth." Ukitake said warmly and mellifluously.

Rukia gently lifted the badge out of the box. It felt lighter than it looked which would be good for fighting she thought. The metal felt solid nonetheless, cold too. It was dark bronze in color, like all the others, but this one was hers, and this one was special. She rubbed its raised text and carvings, then to not prolong this moment further she slipped it onto her left arm and looked back up at her captain. Finally she let herself smile a little polite smile at him. He returned the smile then handed her the box as it was hers to keep as well.

"Return to your positions in the ranks." Yamamoto boomed.

Rukia and Ukitake snapped into attention. Turned and walked all the way back to their position at the end. Then turned again and faced each other.

And thus Rukia was now the Lieutenant of the 13th Division of the Gotei 13.

She felt so far from Isane. She felt bad that she didn't even glance at Isane as she walked by her, but she knew she had to keep the proper order and follow the proper procedures of the ceremony.

But her thoughts of Isane would be cut short for Yamamoto would go straight into the next order of business.

"Ichigo Kurosaki," He said piquing everyone's interest aside from Sui Feng and Mayuri who each knew what he was about to say. "an extraordinary human boy, whose valiant actions ended the war against the traitorous Sosuke Aizen," He said with displeasure evident in voice, "may have allied himself with one of our enemies."

"Wh-?" Rukia began to say but caught herself.

"As some of you know, before Ichigo there was another extraordinary boy who also became a Substitute Shinigami. A boy named Ginjou Kugo. With information gathered by the Onmitsukido and data gathered by Kugo's and Kurosaki's Substitute Shinigami Surveillance Badges, the SRDI has been able to determine the source of their innate abilities."

Rukia was taken aback. Not because of the extent of Omnitsukido surveillance. She knew how broad their operational scope was. What surprised her was that Ichigo was the target of surveillance, study, and suspicion.

"I will not dwell on the technicalities of their abilities. Captain Kurotsuchi will be sharing a memo with each of you containing that information. What is important is that their power is Hollow in origin, and that they can share or steal each other's abilities. We have reason to believe that they can steal a Shinigami's powers to an extent as well. Whether this only applies to substitute Shinigami such as Kurosaki and Kugo or to all Shinigami is currently unknown. They call themselves Fullbringers and Kugo leads a group of these individuals called Xcution. For years we had simply monitored him while he served as a Substitute Shinigami. However he began to kill Shinigami, using their power to strengthen his own. An arrest could not be made however as he discovered our surveillance, disabled those functions of his badge, and disappeared."

Rukia felt awful. Her emotions were coming to a head. The words she was hearing almost made the Lieutenants Badge on her arm feel less special. She felt suspicious of it for a moment, wondering if it too had a secret purpose.

"Kugo has recently resurfaced, however. He and Ichigo Kurosaki have made contact and have been working and training together. To what end is unknown."

Rukia had heard enough.

"THERES NO WAY!" Rukia exclaimed literally stepping out of line to everyone's surprise.

"Kuchiki Rukia." Yamamoto boomed trying to silence her.

"If that Ichigo does something with such a person it would surely have to be because-"

"SILENCE KUCHIKI RUKIA!" He yelled. "Do not get too big for your britches!"

"Im sorry Captain Commander Yamamoto." Rukia said with a bow. She was very red in the face and felt embarrassed at her outburst.

"Get back in line!" Yamamoto ordered. She did, facing Ukitake again. He smiled and gave a small nod. He was understanding.

"Do not let your feelings and personal history blind you to the facts. No amount of surveillance and monitoring can determine the thoughts in his mind or the intentions in his heart. Your first mission as Vice Captain of the 13th division will be to monitor Ichigo Kurosaki and Xcution and to determine where Ichigo Kurosaki's allegiance lies. Do not let your presence be known. Do not interfere in their actions unless the lives of innocents are threatened. And I will say again, do not let your feelings and personal history blind you to the facts or compromise this mission. This is your first mission and your performance in it will be carefully evaluated. Once Kurosaki's allegiance is determined reinforcements will be sent in to arrest or kill the offending parties. Pray Kurosaki isn't one of them. Keep your guard up and keep your reports thorough and consistent. You will leave for Karakura town in two nights. Captains Ukitake, Kurotsuchi, and Feng will brief you further. Do you understand me!?"

"Yes Captain Commander!" She said feeling embarrassed.

"Are there any further matters that need discussed?" Yamamoto asked addressing the group. No one spoke up.

"This meeting is therefore adjourned! Captain Unohana, remain here for a moment. All else are dismissed." He boomed with two pounds of his cane sword.

Slowly the captains and lieutenants of the Gotei 13 filed out of the assembly hall. Rangiku and Isane both briefly wondered what business Yamamoto would have with Unohana.

Outside, Rukia's colleagues congratulated her and shared pleasantries with each other. All but a few of the captains dispersed.

Renji and Izuru were first to congratulate Rukia after all had filed out of the Assembly Hall. She thanked them after they did so.

Isane was the second. She hugged Rukia tight and told Rukia that she was proud of her. Affection unmistakable in her eyes and voice.

"Oh Isane." Rukia said. Feeling a bit shy and on the spot from the public display of affection. Renji and Izuru shared a knowing glance as they put two and two together. "Thank you so much." She said enjoying her warmth.

Rangiku looked on a happy at the sight. She thought about Unohana and her desire for privacy for a moment and she walked up and hugged Rukia too. Tighter than Isane did and with her usual over the top playfulness too.

Isane lauged. Rukia enjoyed this hug too. She also laughed.

Hisagi and Nanao were rather dry in their congratulations then they left. Momo arrived and enthusiastically shook Rukia's hand as she congratulated her. She stuck around to talk.

"Good job Rukia!" Yachiru hollered as she and Kenpachi walked on by en route to the 11th.

"Thanks Yachiru!" She hollered back.

"You really stuck your neck out for Kurosaki in there." Renji said.

"I know. It was a bit rash of me." Rukia said. "It just wasn't right. The implication and all. Like I know General Yamamoto is right, but… he wouldn't. I just know he wouldn't."

"I know." Renji said. "Watch out for him out there will ya." he said giving her a slap on the shoulder.

"I will." Rukia said feeling a bit indebted to Ichigo in that moment. Her concern for her old friend evident in her voice was briefly mistaken as longing by Isane even though she knew it was not. She felt a touch of jealousy and wondered if Ichigo ever caught her eye in any way which he absolutely never did. They looked at each other a moment and smiled.

Then Nemu walked up, Sui Feng following closely behind her. "Captain Kurotsuchi requests your audience at 3pm this afternoon for briefing." Rukia agreed to be there at the requested hour. Nemu gave a small bow. "I am glad to see you finally get the promotion you deserve." Nemu said completely unemotionally but genuinely as was her way. "Thank you Nemu." Rukia said. She watched her as she left for a moment. Wondering if she was happy in life. Hoping that she was. She was a good woman Rukia thought.

"Lieutenant Kuchiki." Sui Feng said.

"Yes Captain." Rukia said with a bow.

"I'll be in my office for the rest of the evening. Please come by as soon as you have finished with your meeting with Captain Kurotsuchi so I can brief you on the intelligence we have gathered."

"Yes. Captain, I will be there as promptly as possible." Rukia said respectfully despite her still not liking the idea of having to surveil Ichigo.

"No need to hurry." Sui Feng said. "And I second what Nemu said." Sui Feng said with a suave smile.

"Thank you, Captain." Rukia said. Sui Feng's words and respect meant a lot to her.

"See you this afternoon then." Sui Feng said and left.

"Isane," Unohana said in her sweet soft voice as she joined the group. "Why don't we do something special for Rukia? Dinner at ours." She said pausing for a moment. "The four of us," She said looking at Rangiku now and smiling a little warm smile. "tomorrow night."

"Sounds great Hana-chan." Rangiku said.

"It does sound great. I'm so fortunate to be surrounded by so many supportive people." Rukia said. "So lucky…" she said again getting a little emotional at how special this all felt. The respect from captains she looked up to; Ukitake, Sui-Feng, Unohana, and most of all her brother Byakuya. The pride and adoration she could see and feel that Isane had for her. The enthusiasm of her friends and colleagues. This invitation into the enigmatic, mysterious, and legendary Captain Unohana's home. "… but please, let me cook something too." She said snapping back to the immediate conversation going on.

"If you wish." Unohana said. "Isane tells me you're a great cook."

Rukia smiled and glanced over at her upon hearing the comment.

"Kiku-chan, why don't you come over tonight so we can plan for tomorrow, say anytime after 6?"

"I'll head over straight over as soon as I'm done in the office." Rangiku said.

"Good, I look forward to it Kiku-chan. See you tonight." she said she said with a smile that seemed odd to Rangiku as Hitsugaya walked up to join his lieutenant.

"See you tonight Retsu." Rangiku said.

"Ladies," she said excusing herself from Isane and Rukia with a polite nod. "Hitsugaya Taicho," she said excusing herself from him too.

"Unohana Taicho." He said bowing respectfully to the great captain. Thinking as he did that she literally just called Rangiku "Kiku-chan."

"I should be going too now," Rukia said seeing that her Captain was looking her way and waiting for her now. "duty calls." She said feeling proud of herself for a moment.

She gave Isane a little wave goodbye as she started moving away towards him. Isane returned it.

All else slowly dispersed.

. . .

Later that afternoon Unohana sat on her couch having settled in after a long day. Her mind dwelled heavily on Yamamoto's private words to her earlier that afternoon.

"I remember, centuries ago how strong you and Senjumaru were together. You and her were two of the best swords the Gotei 13 has ever had. Your union with her made each of you better warriors." He continued as she wondered why he was speaking of this now after all these years.

"You pushed each other higher and higher and you never held each other back. And you each took an oath to prioritize the Gotei 13 and it's mission over your personal lives." He said.

She suddenly realized where he was going with this. She was surprised he knew already and felt a bit offended at where he was going with this though she did not show it.

"You two chose to separate so she could answer the noble call to…" He rambled.

Unohana interrupted him. "You know about Lieutenant Matsumoto and I." she said. Surprised at the depth and thoroughness of surveillance they were under.

"Of course I do. There are no secrets in Seireitei. And I wish you and Matsumoto the best. They say love is a beautiful thing… I pray that your union with her also results in mutual betterment. I expect each of you to continue to make your service to the Gotei 13 and its mission your priority in life. We who serve in the Gotei 13 are first and foremost warriors." He said sounding almost bothered now.

She most definitely was bothered. She found it highly presumptuous of him, intrusive, and rude.

"We will." She said curtly.

"Good." He said. "Difficult decisions may again lie in your and her future, and though I fear it, the day may come where you must pick up the blade you laid down. Keep it sharp."

"Yes General." She said somber.

"That is all I wished to discuss with you." Yamamoto said.

"Have a good afternoon then General Yamamoto." She said giving him the requisite bow. Then she left.

He knew his words bothered her but felt they needed to be said regardless, and callous sternness was his manner. Deep down, however his only concern regarding Unohana's new relationship was for her getting hurt again. And he hoped that in saying what he said, perhaps Unohana would not get too attached. Little did he know, Unohana was already very attached and his words would only serve to bring Unohana and Rangiku closer.

She sat curled up and comfy on her couch now turning all of this over in her head. Feeling aggravated, irritated. She didn't disagree with anything he said. But the cold reality of it saddened her and Yamamoto's intrusiveness bothered her. She also felt belittled in a way and she felt as if he was questioning her intentions. Clearly, he felt she needed reminded of her priorities. Surely, she felt after all these years serving by his side, he should know by know where her heart and priorities lie.

She wondered if one day Rangiku would leave her behind too. If Rangiku would choose duty over being with her as Unohana and Yamamoto both felt she should. Mind spiraling in negativity. Failing to realize Rangiku's lack of ambition for such things. Ambition Senjumaru had. Her mind jumped to Senjumaru for a second. She wondered if Senjumaru was doing ok up there in the Royal Guard. And then she began to imagine what sort of scenario would require her to take up her Minazuki again and take to the front lines like her Sensei warned her to be prepared for. She feared such a scenario. She feared the bloodlust buried within her. And she feared being alone again. She felt stupid. Stupid for letting this happen between Rangiku and her. And she hated herself in this moment for still on some level wishing this never happened. Mind lacking self-discipline. She wrapped her blanket tighter around her. And then she heard three familiar knocks.

Her spirits lifted for she knew that it was most likely Rangiku at the door.

"Come in!" She said just loud enough to be heard. Hoping that it was Rangiku, ok with the fact that it could be Isane, and hoping that it was not anyone other than the two of them because she didn't want to have to deal with anyone else right now.

And Rangiku it was. The energy of Unohana's home brightened with her arrival and when she laid eyes on her lover all her fears and worries and stresses were gone.

"Hey Hana-chan." Rangiku said with a loving smile.

"Kiku honey, come here." Unohana said shuffling an arm out from underneath the blanket. Beckoning with her hand. Just wanting to feel her close. Rangiku came to her, sat down and took her hand.

"What's wrong?" She asked seeing in Unohana's eyes that something was troubling her.

"I'm ok." Unohana said.

"You can talk to me." Rangiku invited wrapping her arms around Unohana and pulling her close.

Unohana felt so good, so comforted, so right in Rangiku's arms. And her heart surged with happiness and joy and love because of it. While simultaneously surging with the guilt she felt but moments before.

She felt so grateful for such care and affection and dare she think, love, from Rangiku. And simultaneously she felt undeserving of it.

Unohana looked up at Rangiku who smiled at her with concerned eyes and for the first time in years, decades even she started to cry.

"Hana-chan!" Rangiku said seeing the tears stream from Unohana's eyes. "What is it?"

"I…" Unohana began to try and say something.

"It's just…" She continued feeling embarrassed and out of control of her emotions.

"Shushhh It's ok." Rangiku said. "You can tell me when you're ready." She said holding her curled up lady close.

"Thank you Kiku." Unohana whispered with a sniffle. Feeling so filled with love. Feeling so much comfort from her touch. Seeing in Rangiku's eyes how much she cared.

"This is what I need right now. You're what I need Kiku." She said. "You're what I need." She whispered again, feeling and believing every word she said wondering when this cycle of doubt and reassurance she would go through again and again would end.

They held each other in silence for a while. Rangiku wondering what got Unohana feeling this way. They held each other until Unohana's tears stopped. And when Unohana's heart had calmed, she found her words again.

"Thank you Kiku." She said. "Thank you for reminding me what happiness feels like. I feel so many beautiful things when I'm with you."

"I feel wanted, and appreciated, and admired in a way that only you want, appreciate, and admire me. Thank you for that Kiku."

"Oh Hana." Rangiku said.

"General Yamamoto spoke to me about us today." Unohana said. "He reminded me of how we must all put duty before our personal lives. Our service is our purpose. He reminded me as if I forgot. It's what I told you our first night together here."

"I see. So that's why you're stressed." Rangiku said thinking about it. Feeling bothered that Yamamoto would say something like that to Unohana.

"That's just part of it." Unohana said. "I feel bad for how much… well for how much I've fought my feelings for you. How much I've doubted this relationship. How sometimes I wish this relationship didn't happen between us because I'm afraid someone could get hurt, again. And I just don't want that for you."

"And I don't want that for you." Rangiku said. "I'm so glad we happened. But I understand your doubts and fears. I get it. Never in a million years did I think I'd ever call you mine. And yet here we are. I only wish you didn't think that way for your own sake. Because I know you're good for me and I'm good for you. I don't think you should try and force those thoughts out of your head. I just don't think that's good for you." Rangiku said. "This is new, its young, in time I think those thoughts and doubts will go away. Some things take time. Remember? You told me that."

"I did didn't I." Unohana said.

"You were right. I needed time, I needed someone to remind me how a relationship should feel." Rangiku said. "And you, you just need time. I'll do my best to give you whatever else you need Hana-chan. Ok. I'll give you time. I'll hold you just like this when you need it and I'll give you space when you need it."

"I don't need space." Unohana said feeling emotional again. She started to wonder why she was feeling such strong varied emotions, but she put it out of her mind and focused on the affection and comfort she felt. She kissed Rangiku then nuzzled her face in her neck, resting her head against her shoulder.

And so Rangiku understood why Unohana cried. She understood now what had been going on in Unohana's head. The conflict within. And was glad she could give Unohana comfort and quiet her mind.

They each knew then that they loved each other. But neither dared say those words to each other. Not yet. But they would in time. They each knew they would in time.

. . .

Late next afternoon a little over an hour before sundown, Rukia arrived at Unohana's door. She knocked, feeling three familiar energies within the home. One approached the door, the most familiar of the three, and opened the door. She was greeted by the smell and sound of meat frying, the brightness and warmth of Unohana's home against the cold night, and the sight of Isane standing in the doorway.

"Hey Rukia." Isane said.

"Hey." Rukia said.

They just stood and looked at each other for a moment. Rukia admired Isane's long beautiful legs, and wide hips hugged by the fabric of her khaki pants. She was cozily dressed in her maroon turtleneck. Isane thought Rukia looked very cute in her grey plaid dress, black tights, and little fuzzy boots.

"Your hair!" Rukia said upon noticing that Isane had straightened it. It was the first time she had seen Isane's hair like this and not in its usual messy state. It was so geometrically perfect she thought. How the strands flowed down in parallel and curled in at the end, framing Isane's beautiful loving face.

"I wanted to do a little something special for you tonight." Isane said.

"You're gorgeous Isane. So pretty and elegant." Rukia said with adoration, watching as her words brought redness to Isane's cheeks.

"Thank you Rukia. You too."

"So perfect." She thought of her lady, and though she did not say it aloud, Rukia understood that look in Isane's eyes.

"Here let me take that." Isane suddenly said grabbing the platter Rukia brought and putting it to the side on the small table by the door.

"Come here you." She said with open arms now.

Rukia stepped forth into her warm embrace. She pressed her wind chapped cheek against the soft warm fabric and felt the squish of Isane's breasts beneath. She loved the feeling of them against her face every time they hugged each other tight, the warmth of Isane's body. Her arms around her back, hands gripping her waist and her ribs, pulling her in close. Never did she feel more comfortable than when she was wrapped in Isane's arms.

Rangiku and Unohana had tired by now of looking on at these two fawning over each other and shared a glance of mutual understanding.

"You two might not mind the cold but we sure do." Rangiku said hugging up on Unohana and pretending to shiver. Unohana laughed and played along, blowing hot breath into cupped hands, then rubbing them up and down on Rangiku's arms to warm them up.

"Sorry." Isane said genuinely feeling bad. Rukia just laughed.

Rukia closed the door. Rangiku and Unohana both laughed. "It's ok," Unohana said, "it just got a bit drafty in here." She said as she and Rangiku let each other go.

"Welcome to my home Lieutenant Kuchiki," Unohana said sweetly as she walked over to receive her guest.

"Hello Captain Unohana, thanks for having me." Rukia said bowing.

Unohana smiled a sweet smile and said, "My pleasure." As she bowed a small bow in return.

Rukia found her very beautiful. Unohana's appearance was completely unlike what she was used to. She was dressed traditionally of course in a gorgeous Houmongi. The pattern stitched into the luxurious fabric seemed to tell a story with its intricacy and the scene it pained. Most notably to Rukia, Unohana's hair was down. Rukia as well as most everyone else in Soul Society had only ever seen Unohana in her Captain's Uniform with her distinctive and unique front braid done up. She recalled in this moment Isane's attraction to Unohana and understood and appreciated it. So transformed and beautiful and free did Unohana look with her hair down, moving and flowing and doing what it did.

Unohana could tell Rukia appreciated her appearance on some modest level and she felt flattered. Even more so did she appreciate the change she felt and saw in Rukia's eyes and energy when Rukia glanced over at Isane and they just smiled at each other.

Unohana watched as Rukia's eyes turned back to gaze upon Rangiku who had just joined the group. She wore an impossibly tight bright red knee length qipao. Rukia thought to herself "Of course she would be cold wearing something like that." She found this wardrobe choice totally to be expected of Rangiku.

"Hey Rukia. Cute outfit." Rangiku said giving Rukia a hug.

"Thank you Rangiku. You too." Rukia responded as a courtesy.

"What did you bring?" Rangiku asked happily.

"Tamagoyaki." Rukia said proudly, fetching the platter from the table by the door and uncovering it to show everyone what she had made.

"It looks beautiful." Unohana said.

"Smells amazing too." Isane said coming near.

"Come, let's sit." Unohana said taking the platter from Rukia and leading the group to the table. Rangiku returned to the kitchen to check on what was cooking.

Isane pulled out Rukia's chair for her and took Rukia's scarf and hat after she sat.

"Thank you Isane." Rukia said.

Isane sat down as well and Rangiku returned to the kitchen as the oil began to sizzle louder than before.

"So I made us miso soup, tsukemono, and rice balls." Unohana said.

"I'm almost done with the tonkatsu pork." Rangiku hollered from the kitchen.

One of the porkchops slipped from her tongs as she was removing it. A splash, sizzle, and Rangiku frustratedly muttering "Shit!" was heard.

"Are you ok Kiku?" Unohana asked with a concerned affection and sweetness that neither Rukia or Isane had ever heard come from her lips.

"I'm fine Hana-chan. I just burned myself a little. It's nothing serious."

"Ok. Let me know if you need me in there." Unohana said.

Rukia and Isane looked at each other.

"I got it, you've done enough cooking today. Awww Hana! I got it on my Qipao too!" Rangiku said.

"I'll wash it for you later." Unohana said.

Now Isane and Rukia were watching in silence as Rangiku and Unohana were having their moment, each amused by their back and forth.

"I just got this Qipao." Rangiku muttered mostly to herself.

"That's why I suggested you wear an apron." Unohana said.

"I know," Rangiku said whining about things now. "I would have looked silly in it, like some kind of maid."

"Kikuuu… you'd look cute in it and your qipao wouldn't have oil on it."

"I knowww…"

Rangiku got back to work while Unohana stared in her direction waiting for a few moments to see if she had anything else to say. Rangiku apparently didn't so Unohana looked back and Rukia and Isane and shrugged. "Anyway Rangiku prepared shredded cabbage as well."

"With a lemon vinaigrette!" Rangiku chimed in again sounding a little bit more cheerful before muttering something else about the oil on her dress.

"And I got us a bottle of Umeshu and made dessert." Isane said.

"What did you make?" Rukia asked.

"That's a surprise Rukia." Isane said.

Rangiku joined the three of them now and placed the pork on the table. She sat down too now and surveyed the table and asked if they had everything they needed.

Isane said "The Umeshu!" and then got up to get it out the fridge.

"Oh yeah we ought to start with that." Rangiku said.

Rukia watched Isane's as she went, taking in every detail that attracted her eyes. The sway of her hips and the stride of her long beautiful legs as she walked. How she bent over to reach into the fridge. The way Isane's fingers curled around the bottle and clutched it as she brought it back. While excited to find out what Isane had made, she thought to herself that she already knew what she wanted to eat for dessert. ;)

Isane opened the bottle and poured everyone a round.

She sat down and everyone raised their glasses and looked toward Unohana, deferring the responsibility of making the toast to her.

Unohana raised her glass a little higher and said "To Lieutenant Rukia Kuchiki , and her continued success and growth." She said toward Rukia giving her a nod.

"To peace, health, prosperity, friendship, and…" she continued then paused to look over at Rangiku.

"… to love."

All felt the way Unohana's last two words hit Rangiku. Her eyes went wide for a second and then she just smiled as she stared into Unohana's happy loving eyes. She wanted to wrap her arms around her and kiss her then and there but abstained. On that note, Rukia and Isane clinked their glasses, as Unohana and Rangiku clinked theirs, then they clinked across the table. All said "Kanpai!" completely out of unison with each other and laughed at their asynchronous cacophony as they brought their glasses to their lips. Isane and Rangiku drank almost the entirety of their glasses while Unohana and Rukia only took a few sips, savoring the drink instead.

"I can't wait to try your Tamagoyaki." Rangiku said as she reached for that with her chopsticks first. Isane and Unohana followed suit. Rukia got one as well and then went for one of Unohana's picture perfect rice balls. Unohana served everyone miso soup while Rangiku cut up the porkchops. They finished serving themselves and each other and said Itadakimasu, this time in much better unison.

Then they ate and talked and laughed and drank into the night. All but Rukia ate to their fill as she had a mission to go on in but a few hours. Rukia also drank the least out of the four. They had all migrated to Unohana's living room by now and sat gathered around Unohana's tea table and sat together. They were into their seventh round of Koi Koi. They could not figure out what to bet on so they decided that the loser would do the dishes.

Unohana and Rangiku seemed far more excited and confident going into the game than Isane and Rukia, neither of whom had played Koi Koi very much. Predictably it had quickly become an aggressive game between Rangiku and her lady. They had won three rounds each, Rukia one, and Isane had yet to win at all. She clearly was not having fun anymore. Rukia on the other hand forged on determined to make a comeback.

She studied her hand and the playing field intently and kept an eye on Isane who sat across from her. Twice now she had reassured an increasingly frustrated Isane that she would get a better hand the next round. She played a card, and feeling confident in her hand, called Koi Koi. A bad choice as Rangiku played a strong Yaku and ended the eighth round. Unohana and Rukia each threw their cards down on the table. "So close!" Unohana said. Rangiku laughed mightily. Rukia shook her head and then asked Isane what she had. Isane sighed and laid down what she held. She leaned across the table to see the cards. She, Rangiku, and Unohana studied it for a moment and commented that Isane yet again had been dealt an awful hand.

"Looks I'm really going to get stuck with those dishes." Isane said.

"Aww Isane-chan, I'll help with them if you lose." Rukia said.

"If? The game is almost over!" Isane said.

"No offense to you two but why don't you team up for the rest of the game? That should be more fun. We're here to celebrate and have fun after all aren't we? How does that sound." Rangiku suggested. Unohana nodded in approval of the suggestion.

"Alright." Rukia said.

Isane smiled and said, "Come here then baby." More so looking forward to being closer to Rukia than playing on a team with her.

Rukia got up, walked around the table, and settled in next to Isane. Rangiku dealt the cards, Isane wrapped an arm around Rukia and pulled her close, and the ninth round began.

Unohana ultimately won the game by a narrow point margin over Rangiku, and Rukia and Isane had a far more fun and pleasant time getting demolished as a team.

"We should get together and play more so we can get better." Isane suggested to the group as she had fun in the end.

"That would be nice." Unohana said.

"Why don't we play another round right now?" Rangiku suggested as she had a point to prove.

"Uhh, I hate to be a party pooper, but I need time to get ready tonight and don't want to stay too late." Rukia said.

"That is fine." Unohana said. "Being prepared for your mission is important."

"I'll serve desert then." Isane said getting up. Unohana got up as well and said that she would be right back.

Rangiku got to work packing up the cards and asked if anyone wanted another drink. "A glass of wine for me Kiku. Thank you." Unohana said en route to her bedroom. "Water. Thank you." Rukia said. "Uuuuumeshu!" Isane said reaching in the fridge to pull out the desert she prepared. She carried the tray and placed it on the now cleared tea table. Rangiku returned with a glass of water in one hand and two bottles in the other.

Rukia thanked Rangiku for the water and took a sip. Isane returned to the kitchen for spoons.

Unohana returned now with two small boxs and quietly placed one in front of Rukia and sat down next to her. She placed the other box the spot where Rangiku would sit.

"Captain you shouldn't have." Rukia said wondering what it was that was being gifted to her and Rangiku. Rangiku and Isane overheard from the kitchen and returned. It took a moment for Isane to realize what was in the boxes, for she too received one from Unohana years ago.

Unohana raised the glass toward Rangiku and said, "Thank you." Then took a sip.

"Long ago when I was very young," she began "I met and later served with a man named Oetsu Nimaiya. He was raised as a blacksmith by his adoptive parents. He and I shared a love for blades and sharp things. He and I were two of the founding members of the Gotei 13. We called him Toshin for he was the Shinigami that created the Zanpakuto."

"Whoa." Rukia and Rangiku said. Isane listed on, smiling for she had heard this story before.

"That is his legacy. He made me a set of three matching Kogatana as a gift of sorts one time long ago. He never did best me in a fight, I was stronger with a Zanpakuto than he was. But the closest he came was when he managed to sink a kogatana I did not know he was carrying into my liver one time while we were sparring."

A chill went down Rangiku's spine. There was something so simultaneously sexy and scary about Unohana when she talked about fighting. A rare topic of discussion for her.

"He made me a set of three to apologize for taking a sparring session too far. While he did act recklessly then his carrying an extra hidden blade gave him an edge in that fight. All is fair in a fight when your life and especially when the lives of those you care about is at stake and as such I carried the Kogatana he made me for years. I have never had to use them. I passed one down to Isane when she became my Lieutenant. Today I am passing down my other two. Go ahead, open it Rukia."

"Unohana Taicho I am honored." Rukia said as she took the box into her hands and opened it. Inside she found a beautiful little skinny knife about 8 inches in overall length. She carefully unsheathed it. Its blade had no curve and looked deadly sharp. The wood of the sheath and the grip were a glossy black wood.

"It's beautiful Taicho. I am touched and honored by your gift and I intend to carry it with me for the rest of my days." Rukia said.

"Good Rukia. I am glad to hear it."

"Rangiku." Unohana said gesturing for her to open her box. Rangiku opened the box to find it empty. Rangiku looked to Unohana for an explanation. In a quick movement she drew a knife from her sleeve, twirled it round between her fingers and presented it grip first to Rangiku. She ran her thumb across the edge, thinking to herself that it would be the last time she would touch the blade.

"I have carried this knife every day of my life since the day it was given to me. Even on days that I did not care to carry my Zanpakuto, I still carried this knife. It is my favorite of the three. I want you to have it Kiku."

"I couldn't." Rangiku said taking it, nonetheless. It was a little larger than the one gifted to Rukia. Identical in design except with a dark red stained wood finish to it.

"I insist Kiku-chan. I am not a fighter anymore. I do not want anything related to any blade but a scalpel to be a part of my legacy. You are far more likely to use and need it than I am. It's good to have a little something extra tucked up your sleeve." She said digging the sheath out and handing that to Rangiku as well as two soft pieces of fabric she used to affix the blade to her arm.

"Or tucked in your boot." Isane said procuring hers. It was the same size as Rukia's. Its wood however had a natural finish to it.

"I've never seen yours before." Rukia said.

"I'm sorry, I never thought to mention it. I almost always keep it either in my boots or tucked into a little pocket in my tabi if I'm in uniform."

"I don't know what to say." Rangiku said feeling the persistent warmth of the wood that had sat against Unohana forearm until now.

"Thank you Taicho." Rukia said again.

"You are very welcome Lieutenant. I have seen you fight. You are quick, small, and you get in close. I could see you using it regularly." Unohana said.

Rukia felt complimented in a way. Rangiku meanwhile sat staring at the blade, in contemplation of all it had seen, lying in wait, a little secret up her sleeve, yearning she thought to taste the blood of battle too. Maybe one day she'd quench it. She gave herself a chill that time and wondered if there was something more to this cold dead metal or if something in her was morbidly curious about the thirst for battle Unohana used to have. Unohana's buried bloodlust that Rangiku did not possess.

"I'll have to figure out where to carry it then." Rukia said.

"I will keep yours up my sleeve Hana-chan." Rangiku said with conviction.

"I am glad." Unohana said. "Thank you all. I'd hate to see them collect dust."

"No, thank you Taicho." Rukia and Isane said in almost perfect unison.

"Thank you, baby." Rangiku said a moment later while reaching out for Unohana's hand. Unohana took it for a moment and squeezed it.

"How about desert then Isane?" She suggested

"Oh yes I could go for something sweet!" Rangiku said.

"Great! I made us Purin!" Isane exclaimed uncovering the lid to reveal a tray filled end to end with little porcelain cups of custard.

"Caramel sauce on the bottom?" Rangiku asked excited.

"Yes." Isane said

"It looks really good Isane." Unohana said taking a cup and spoon.

"Really cute cups." Rukia commented. Before eating a spoon. "Mmm!" She said with a giggle and a little happy dance.

Rangiku was still stirring hers up as she liked it broken apart with the caramel sauce mixed in.

"Wow. Very sweet against the wine." Unohana said holding back a cough. She swallowed, drank a bit of wine, and had another spoon. "Mmm, perfectly rich and creamy. Good job Isane."

"Mm-Thank you." Isane said with food in her mouth.

"Yes, it really is perfect. I wish I had space for another one but I think that would be one too many." Rangiku said.

"Have one tomorrow then. May I leave a few cups in your refrigerator Taicho?" Isane asked.

"I'd love that."

"Can you make some for me when I get back?" Rukia asked.

"Of course. Anything for you Rukia." Isane said.

Rangiku was the first to finish her custard. She took the cup to the kitchen and started work packing a bento box for Rukia's mission. Isane and Rukia started work clearing the table of dishes and utensils. And Unohana, last to finish, put the alcohol away and started packing up the rest of the leftovers.

"This is for you." Rangiku said placing the bento box down next to Rukia's new Kogatana.

"Thank you." Rukia said as she started to run the water to begin the dishes. Isane by her side ready to dry and rinse.

"Oh don't worry about that." Unohana said coming over to the sink.

"Yes we got it." Rangiku said."

"But we lost."

"Its fine, I don't want to sit around while the guest of honor cleans up my home. It would make me feel like a bad host. You have a mission to prepare for anyway." Unohana said.

"If you insist." Rukia said backing away and drying her hands with a towel.

"Thank you so much for having me Taicho." Rukia said with a small bow. "I feel honored to have received such hospitality and such a special gift."

"You are most welcome Lieutenant Kuchiki. Let's get together again soon, the four of us." Unohana said.

"You're walking Rukia home, right?" Unohana asked Isane who had taken over Rukia's spot at the sink.

"Oh, well, I figured I'd catch up with Rukia after we cleaned but that would be very nice!" Isane said.

"Go on then. We got it." Unohana instructed.

"Ok." Isane said.

"Maybe we will host the four of us next time." Isane suggested. Rukia nodded in agreement.

"I look forward to it." Rangiku who now took over the sink said. She turned the faucet off as the basin was full by now.

"Come back soon." Rangiku said opening her arms to invite Rukia in for a hug. They embraced.

"Taicho." Rukia said turning to Captain Unohana and bowing again.

Unohana stepped forward and pulled Rukia into an embrace. "You need not be so formal in my home." Unohana said having grown fond of her Lieutenants special lady. Rukia was surprised at first but returned the hug.

"See you soon sister." Rangiku said hugging Isane.

Unohana walked over firmly patted Isane on the shoulder twice. Looked towards Rukia, then back toward Isane and nodded. Isane smiled.

She and Rukia gathered their things. Said "Good night." one last time and left out the front door. They stopped at Isane's briefly to put away the leftover Purin then continued toward Rukia's.

Unohana and Rangiku were finally alone now washing the dishes together. "I really enjoyed cooking with you Kiku." Unohana said taking a soapy dish from Rangiku and rinsing it.

"Me too. Tonight was a great night. Let's cook together more ok?" Rangiku suggested.

"I'd like that." Unohana said taking another dish from Rangiku. Their fingers touched as they did.

Unohana looked down at Rangiku's beautiful soapy hands and fingers and then back up into her eyes. Rangiku smiled affectionately, seeing the love and desire in Unohana's eyes. Unohana put the unrinsed plate down, turned the faucet off and reached out requesting Rangiku's one of Rangiku's hands. Rangiku put the dish she was washing down and took Unohana's hand. Unohana stroked it softly. Loud was the sound of the droplets falling from their wet hands into the sink in the silence of the quiet home.

"I wish I didn't eat that much." Unohana said.

"I ate alot too." Rangiku said turning to face her.

Unohana looked at Rangiku's body in that ridiculous dress. "That dress has been driving me crazy all night you know? Watching you bend and move and cook in it."

"I know. I've felt your eyes burning into me all night long." Rangiku said smiling.

"Is that why you bought the dress? To tempt me with it?" Unohana asked, intertwining their fingers.

"In no small part yes." Rangiku said. "It's a nice Qipao regardless."

"Yes. Yes, it is. And you do not need a dress to tempt me. Just a look, or a touch, or a kiss is all it takes Kiku. You can grab me, take me, tell me what you want, and I will give it to you Kiku." Unohana said.

Rangiku kissed her. Deep, sweet, lustful.

"Are you too tired, too full?" Rangiku asked.

"I'm a little tired, and I am quite full. But i want to…"

"Then why don't we wait, finish the dishes, then sit and settle our stomachs for a bit. Have some tea. What kind of tea would be good for that?"

"Green and Ginger maybe?" Unohana said. "Ginger for indigestion, green to wake us up a bit."

"With honey hunny?" Rangiku asked.

"Yes of course." Unohana said with a laugh. "I'd like to sit outside with you under the stars." She said.

"My legs will be cold." Rangiku said.

"I'll give you that robe again, we'll huddle up under my thickest blanket too. I'll keep you warm. Would you like that?" Unohana asked.

"I would." Rangiku said.

"Good." Unohana said. Then she kissed Rangiku. "Thank you."

They resumed washing the dishes.

. . .

Meanwhile Isane and Rukia walked rather slowly toward the 13th, hand in hand without a care in the world. The night was cold and quiet. The sky clear and starry. The air was dry.

"Do you think it would snow if it was cloudy?" Isane asked.

"Probably." Rukia said. "Wouldn't fresh snow make tonight perfect?" She asked.

"It would be so pretty. I can't wait for the first snow." Isane said. "I can't wait to play in it with you."

Rukia laughed.

"Oh I wish you didn't have to go." Isane said. "I'm going to miss you so much. It'll be your first time away from me since…"

"Since the best thing to happen in my life." Rukia said looking up at her for a moment conveying the seriousness of her words with her gaze.

Isane blushed. She felt so lucky. She let Rukia's hand go and wrapped her arm around Rukia pulling her closer.

"I won't be gone too long. I'll return soon." Rukia said.

"I know." Isane said.

The wind gusted a bit and blew her hair about.

"Ooh." Isane giggled tickled by the frigid breeze.

"Cold?" Rukia asked.

"A little. But I'm embracing it. Remember?"

"Yes." Rukia said remembering fighting alongside Isane not long ago. Remembering what she told her that night. "But warmth is nice and comforting too. Here." She said taking stopping to face Isane. She took her hat off.

"No, you should keep it." Isane said.

"I'll be fine. You look so cute in my hats anyway." Rukia said as she reached up and slipped it onto Isane's head. Isane loved the feeling of the warmth that had been trapped in Rukia's hat. She gazed down and smiled at the sight of Rukia's beautiful black hair blowing slightly in the breeze. Rukia gazed up and smiled at the sight of Isane's face framed by her hat. Silver hair hanging out beyond the beanie. She touched Isane's face. Isane was surprised at how warm the one hand she had been holding onto felt in contrast to the one she was not. Rukia, adjusted the neck of Isane's turtleneck sweater then pulled Isane down into a short, sweet kiss. They giggled then resumed walking hand in hand like before.

"My life is so perfect right now. Almost too perfect." Rukia said. "I'm a Lieutenant now. I never thought I'd make it this far in the Gotei. And I have you. I can be with you. Openly, with no secrecy. Part of me worries something terrible is destined to happen to bring karmic balance."

"Karmic balance?" Isane asked.

"Yes. Do you ever feel that? Do you ever feel almost guilty for things being so good?"

"No, I just hope the good times last forever." Isane said.

Rukia chuckled. "I hope so too."

A few more moments of silence passed as they walked. Isane's arm over Rukia's shoulders, Rukia's arm around Isane's waist, cadence of their strides matched.

"It's only 8 and yet it feels so late." Isane commented.

"Yes." Rukia responded.

"What all did you want to do before you set out for your mission at midnight?" Isane asked.

"You mostly." Rukia said matter-of-factly. "I've been imagining myself pulling those pants off of you since you opened that door to let me in." She said as she stroked her hand down the curve of Isane's hip and grabbed a handful of ass.

"Pulling them all the way off your legs." Rukia said. Her words stirring something wild in Isane. "Crawling in between…"

"Shushhhh. What if someone hears you." Isane said in a turned-on whisper

"Who?" Rukia said gesturing at the empty streets.

"Still."

"I want you Isane." Rukia said with a quiver in her voice.

"I want you too." Isane whispered. Desire and happiness and excitement surging in her. She broke away from Rukia and ran a little bit for no reason. Rukia jogged after her. Isane stopped running and turned around to walk backwards, indulging in Rukia's gaze running up and down her body.

"You make me feel so sexy. So free to be me." Isane said.

"You make me feel the same way Isane. Are you making me chase you right now?"

"No but It's so fun when you do." Isane said feeling a confidence she only felt when she was with Rukia.

Rukia quickened her pace. "Come and get this Rukia-tan." Isane said turning around to run forward again.

Rukia laughed and lunged forward to grab her but before Rukia could grab her, Isane flashed off into the night sky.

"She really does wants me to chase her." Rukia thought to herself as she realized her arms had embraced only an afterimage. She caught a glimpse of Isane in the sky far in the distance and smirked. She too enjoyed the chase. So, she focused her energy and flashed off into the night after her.

So good, so fun, so perfect. The four of them.

. . .

AN: Took me long enough. Took an long and frustrating amount of time to figure out their dinner scene and what they did during that time together. And when im frustrated i dont write well. I wanted to write something that felt like a natural interaction between the four of them and I am very happy with the result. I also wanted to write a chapter that tied this story back into the cannon of bleach as my stories for the most part are meant to fit in canon unless i seriously object to some part of the canon material of course. Anyway things kinda clicked and then just flowed onto the pages. I'm really proud of this chapter and hope you all enjoy it as well.

One of the things i noticed that i inadvertently did was inverse the roles that rangiku and unohana have traditionally played in their relationship. the first where rangiku is the one whose shoulder gets cried on. the one who consoles the unohana. the second at the end of the chapter doing dishes where unohana plays the role of the 'temptress'. I had always planned on having unohana break down emotionally from the stress of conflicting emotions and have rangiku lift her back up. i did not however plan to write unohana saying the graphic and sexually giving things she said in this chapter. that said it perfectly fits the growth and awakening i wanted to write in this story that they cause in each other and that i find to be a natural part of healthy relationships.

this chapter marks the beginning of the end finally. the end of this story has been known by me since the beginning. everything that ive written so far is to set up for the end and make things make sense if you will. it will be beautiful.

the next chapter is called "I Love You" and boy have i been working my way towards writing that chapter and making it feel impactful. having unohana and rangiku finally say those words to each other. It will be lemony too which is always fun to write.

thank you for reading this story for the past six seven years. never thought it get like this but its so right. and so worth it. im so proud of it and so thankful for your readership.
