Chapter 12: Bun in the Oven
To say that Frederick the Wary was overextended was an understatement.
In the past couple of months, he was at his limit of keeping Lord Chrom and Lady Lissa in check, creating new training regimens for soldiers, and making sure that his extraordinary wife was not pushing herself too hard in doing her tactician duties.
Ever since Robin was pregnant, (eight months along!) Frederick's overprotectiveness had increased ten fold.
Robin so far was having a hard time eating anything so her food options became very limited. In addition, her morning sickness had increased since their discovery, so every morning when he reached over to feel the presence of his beloved wife, all he would find was empty space in their bed. The knight's mornings were instead being woken up to the sounds of his poor wife dry heaving what was left of dinner in the adjacent bathroom.
With Robin's morning sickness growing steadily worse , the doting husband's stress levels immediately skyrocketed from overprotective to a near manic desperation. The stress had even blended into Frederick's Fanatical Fitness Hour AND regular training regimens- all of the poor participants were reduced to training dummies as the knight himself would take out all afflictions on them. To anyone else not in training it was a darkly comical sight, for Frederick's mood swings made it seem it was he who was pregnant and not Robin.
The tactician didn't seem to mind as much as people thought she would- Robin knew Frederick was trying to handle stress in the best way he knew how. In truth, it was entertainment for her when her husband stopped her training altogether due to the baby.
To add to the stress, Morgan had gotten married off to the Prince of Valm, Inigo eight months ago. (Much to Robin's shock and Frederick's displeasure). Although Frederick was on good terms with Virion and Olivia, to have Virion as official father in law to his daughter AND to have Inigo as his official son in law was… cumbersome to say the least. (When asked by Robin later, Frederick was NOT totally jealous of Inigo due to the fact that his darling Morgan no longer had the knight as her number one man in her life. He denied any sort of those feelings whatsoever.)
As Virion and his wife Olivia were still trying to win back the love of the kingdom that Virion had abandoned during war, it was expected that the newly married Inigo and Morgan had to help heal the scars of Valm and show their support. The married couple had left immediately for the distant kingdom after a small but lavish wedding ceremony.
It had broken Frederick's heart just a little when Morgan left to help Inigo fulfill their royal duties as the newly crowned Prince and Princess of Valm. Both Frederick and Robin had missed their daughter severely. Morgan and Inigo were so busy these past eight months that they couldn't even stop by Ylisstol to visit!
However, Frederick and Robin were no stranger to duty as they both held important positions in their own home of Ylisse. They both knew the burdens and responsibilities of servitude to a kingdom.
Truthfully, if he had it his way, the knight had wanted his beloved daughter to stay in Ylisse. Preferably for the rest of her life with Inigo in tow. In the several years that he and Robin had gotten to know Morgan since her discovery during the war, Frederick and Robin became completely smitten with their future daughter. Although she had very little memories, Morgan and her father became extremely close all this time and wasted no time in making new memories together. She was definitely daddy's darling little girl.
In these times of uncertainty, one of the few precious things that kept the wary knight together was Morgan's letters.
In the letters addressed to her parents, Morgan spoke of how different Valm was to Ylisstol, how lavish everything was (due to Virion and Inigo's taste for extravagance) and how much she had grown to love her new home. She spoke of the different culture and traditions that Valm had compared to Ylisttol, and how she was growing into her new position as Princess Morgan of the realm of Valm.
Each letter sent to Frederick and Robin was a great delight, for they had missed their daughter terribly. All letters sent from Morgan were delicately and neatly placed in a drawer in Frederick's home office so that the knight and tactician could read privately together when time allotted.
However, in this month in particular, no letters were received by Robin and Frederick. It was very strange, as their beloved daughter always sent a new letter every week. It had been two weeks into the new month of April, and Frederick himself was becoming even more prudent. Pacing back and forth in his private office, deep in thought, he did not hear his beloved wife come crashing through the door.
"Frederick! Morgan and Inigo are HERE! They are waiting for us outside the barracks!"
Astonished, Frederick the wary all but ran, silently following Robin outside into the outer training area. It was a comical sight, the head knight and tactician running like a beheaded Risen into the aforementioned area. Running down anyone who was in their path. However the couple temporarily forgot their dignity as excitement and amazement grew within them. Their daughter? Here in Ylisse?..
And there, at the entrance of the training grounds, with an exuberant carriage and a company of Valm's finest guards and servants to match, (courtesy of Virion- Frederick and Robin made a mental note to write thanks to him later) stood Morgan and Inigo proudly. The couple were hand in hand and viewed the training area in reminiscence as a small crowd started to gather at the rare sight of the Valmese royals.
As Frederick and Robin neared the visiting couple however, their running came to an absolute halt as they ogled at their daughter in particular.
Morgan stood proudly, showing off a very apparent large swollen belly.
Robin was the first to speak. "I...what-"
"Surprise! I'm 8 months pregnant!" Veering his gaze down to Morgan's belly, Frederick could only gape in shock as he held onto Robin's hand to ground himself beside the tactician. Inigo and Morgan's smiles grew wider as they inspected Robin's pregnant belly as well.
Inwardly, Frederick and Robin were trying to recollect if Morgan had mentioned any sort of hint in the letters she had sent.
Morgan and Inigo merely chuckled, as if reading their minds. She started, "If you are trying to remember if I wrote about this, the answer is no. I wanted it to be a surprise! I specifically decided to not write to you guys that I'm coming to visit because I knew that father would not have let me travel. It takes two weeks to travel from Valm to Ylisstol anyway!"
"...You're right, I wouldn't have..So why?..."
"I wanted to visit because I missed you guys- I haven't seen you all since I've gotten married! In addition we were missing Princess Lucina and all of our other friends too since they are all here! Inigo and I agreed to have the baby here too since I'm basically the first of all the others from the future to have kids! I want to share this moment with everyone!"
Frederick the wary couldn't believe what he was hearing! With a stiff back and retort on his tongue, he was about to start his lecture about the dangers of traveling in such a late state in pregnancy until he felt his wife squeezed his hand in her grip.
Hesitating, he took a chance to peek at Robin and was flummoxed to see her weeping with joy. Stepping forward with Frederick in tow, the tactician gently took her daughter in her arms.
Frederick and Inigo quietly watched as both Morgan and Robin cried together happily. Both men's faces filled with happiness and warmth as they heard the two women caught up with each other on the past few months.
"Wow mother! I hope that the baby version of me won't give you trouble! Can you imagine how crazy it would be if my child and the me of this time would be born on the same day?-"
"Ha! Frederick and I would become parents and grandparents at the same time then-"
Frederick passed Inigo and gave an approving nod. Silently, the two followed the pregnant bumbling women deeper into the training grounds.
A month later, on May fifth, Frederick and Robin were ecstatic as they both welcomed their newborn daughter AND granddaughter into the world.
Facts of inspiration:
-Morgan's birthday is May 5 (Both male and female versions)
-In the game, Valm is located west of Ylisse
-In the game, according to Virion, Valm is a "Pitifully" small country that was remembered only because the continent shared the name
-I will continue to write stories! Please stay tuned!
