Chapter 4 - Song of the cold

Sasuke's eyes shot open and panic arose in him. He instantly knew he had overslept. He was alone in his apartment, it was cold but just at the edge of that word. He arrived hours earlier to his home, after Tsunade arranged their mission details. Once it was settled where and when , Sasuke had no reason to stick around. Hinata stayed behind with Tsunade and Kakashi.

It was just before it reached 1 am Sasuke suddenly felt the cold air in his room. With just two hour before he was to meet with the others. He casted the covers off of him , the panic came from the fact from he sense of time loss.

Everyday he felt his skills slip and erode but in this case just his natural sense of time. He had always had a good sense of time even without markers such as the sun, stars or moon, but that was then and this was now. He turned towards his alarm clock. He still had time yet he couldn't trust himself not to oversleep. So he decided to get to his feet and start but he could not make it to his feet before blinding pain hit him. It was fast and without warning, just like suddenly stepping wrong and feeling your ankle twist.

With gritted teeth , He rolled over and fell onto the floor as he felt intense stomach pain overwhelmed him. He felt his senses go as he fought back the urge to scream out in agony. He waited for what felt like 10 minutes before he entered his shower in a panic. Not even closing the shower door before turning the knobs and letting the water hit his clothes.

He threw his clothes into the corner of the shower. Ripping them off his skin as he felt suddenly hot, and itchy. Was his body trying to burn out the sickness or was his body having a terrible reaction to the medication Tsunade had prescribed him? He couldn't answer any of the questions so he embraced the water. He sat on the floor as the water poured over him, cold unforgiving water. His lips began to shiver but by the time they did his mind had slipped away. To an empty place, a place of silence within his mind.

It was 20 minutes before he turned off the water. The pain had returned, awakening him from the bliss he had been in. This time he felt sharp pulsing pain in his veins, that would come and go. Without drying himself he walked out of the shower. He reached his dresser and put the first thing he found on. Once semi dressed he sat onto the floor before laying down on the ground defeated. His face turned towards the wall behind the dresser before staring at it while he waited for the pain to stop hammering him. He waited there until the pain from his veins stopped. He couldn't remember how long he stared at the wall before he stood up. Leaning against the dresser to rise, he reached his feet and felt suddenly very cold. Turning back towards his bed he took several quick steps towards it. He stopped himself from jumping onto his bed and wrapping himself in the thick clover that rested there just as he reached it. His eyes had caught something, the blinking light of the alarm clock. It was 2 am.

The hour was just past 3 am when Sasuke, Hinata and Tsunade left the village of Konoha. Most of the village was asleep by then and those awake could only focus on the rain that bombarded the streets. Clad in black cloaks and rain hats they departed in a group of three. It was a cold morning, even without the rain pouring down on them. Their cloaks had reminded Sasuke of the day of Itachi and Kisame arrival to Konoha, except for the red clouds they had very striking resemblance.

The rain helped Sasuke conceal the coughing fit he had been experiencing since he left his apartment. In between hard breaths a fit of coughs would suddenly explode from his chest. Sometimes leading to some blood following. He did not show any of this to either of them, there was no need for that.

Once the rain stopped, 5 hours after departing Konoha border they sprang up camp. All three set up their own tents while Hinata laid traps around the border. As they had traveled the three made little conversation, there was no awkward silences but it was filled with urgency. For Hinata's part she used her Byakugan to lead them towards a defensible location to set up camp. As she led the way Sasuke was in the middle with Tsunade guarding Behind. Sasuke's entire focus and attention was centered only on not passing out or falling behind.

And because of that it ignored , didn't see , and cared little for anything said as they traveled. Sasuke moved as fast as his body could , but as time went by his body became tired beyond the point he could will himself through it. And that made traveling difficult to make real progress as Sasuke speed kept decreasing as they moved. Hinata and Tsunade Compensated by matching Sasuke speed but it eventually left Tsunade Frustrated. She quickly began openly talking about making camp and drinking herself to sleep.

Hinata didn't react to this while Sasuke was himself desperately trying to not close his eyes. Tsunade was the first to stand watch once everything was set up, while Sasuke and Hinata slept. Then Hinata took over and lastly it was Sasuke's turn.

Only it never arrived, Sasuke had trouble waking up. Hinata was the first to notice when Sasuke didn't wake up when she nudged him. When she ran a hand over his face and found it burning she felt panic. But that escalated further when she found Tsunade out cold. Her body was surrounded by seven bottles of alcohol.
