"Charles Baker has struck again."
There was a moment of silence, while Casey had a second to react. As soon as he collected himself he quickly sat on the couch with her and they talked for a few about what this would mean for her working at arson, but just before they finished talking about it Gabby got a phone call. She got up to answer it and when she did she realized it was OFI Commander Duffy Jr. who's also a great friend of Severide's. "Hey Jonah, I'm assuming you're calling me about Charles Baker?" she guessed. "Oh, I'm assuming you watched the news?" Jonah asked a question back. "Yeah, my husband and I were watching the news when it came on." "Gotcha. I was just calling you to see if you could actually come in now, but I understand if you need some time, he said reassuringly, if I remember anything from my mom's pregnancy with Dylan, everything is unpredictable." They both laughed. "Let me actually okay it with my husband first, then I'll be right back."
"Hey babe, they asked if I can actually come in right now? They want to get a jump on this." Gabby asked her husband. "Whatever you want to do baby." He answered back.
"I'll be in around 11:30." Gabby finally answered. They said their goodbyes and then Gabby went to get ready for work. "You look so cute in your little uniform." Casey said with a bright smile. "Well thank you, but I still prefer my ambo gear." Gabby answered. "I bet, probably comfier." He shot back. "Yeah. Well I should get going, I'll see you after shift?" Matt nodded and then gave her a quick kiss on the lips. "Keep your badge off the wall." "I will." Gabby then went to the center of the table for her keys and then went out the door. As Casey quietly watched her walk off, he thought about how they needed to look into either buying a house or finding usable land to build on.
A couple hours had passed and then next thing you know Casey was in his truck driving over to work. When he finally pulled into his normal spot on the side street, leading to the firehouse, he grabbed his shift bag and some other belongings then started to walk up to the firehouse. He looked down to check some notifications making sure it wasn't Gabby, then he heard Severide call his name. He paused for a second, to wait for his friend to catch up. "Hey man so did you hear about the two new fires at those houses over by Over Easy?" Casey asked, breaking the silence. "Yeah actually I did, Stella was over and she always watches the news so I overheard it. So they suspect Charles Baker again?" "Yep, same MO including the message he would always leave once he got more confident in what he was doing. There's still no casualties at least." "Yeah, Gabby went in early so they can get a head start on this, she went in a couple hours ago." "How's she feeling?" "She's doing great so far, morning sickness has been a bitch, but she's hanging in there." "Are you feeling okay with all this after what happened last time?" "I'm still worried, sure, but I try not to think about it too much especially when everything is going good." As they got up to the garage and when they entered Kelly got a phone call from his dad, so he and Casey parted ways. Casey exchanged some quick hello's and made his way inside to his locker so he could put his stuff away for shift. When he got there, he was greeted by Brett, Cruz and Otis who must've come in together. Cruz and Otis finished up at their lockers and quickly greeted their Captain before walking back out to the common room. "How's Gabby doing Casey?" "She's good, she's at work right now gotta jump on an arson case straight away." "I'm glad she's doing well. I think we are going to get some lunch and catch up soon." Brett replied. "Oh that's great I didn't know that." "Yeah we talked last week briefly at the store, but we haven't set anything yet." "Sounds good, see you at the morning briefing soon, Brett." She just smiled and then finished up at her locker just before walking off. The last of Squad 3 and Truck 81 joined Boden and others in the briefing room for their afternoon meeting. Before Boden could officially begin, the bells rang calling for Squad 3, Truck 81 and Ambulance 61 to respond to a car accident where a family of three was trapped in their car. After the rescues happened and the fire was put out they stayed back to do overhaul and pack up so they could head back to eat as soon as possible. When they pulled up to the firehouse, Truck 81 was the first to return. Squad 3 and Truck 81 went to fill up their engines after the call and Squad was taking a bit longer to return to the house. Captain Casey was the last to get out of his seat and proceeded to go straight into his office for paperwork. He was doing paperwork uninterrupted for about 30 minutes until he heard his phone go off next to his papers. He sighed and picked it up, but then smiled once he realized it was his wife. "Hey baby, he answered, everything okay?" "Yes everything is all good, I'm feeling fine, just wanted to check in and see how it's going." "It's definitely going, calls are limited so far, but so far so good." "Great! It's been busy with the preparation of this case." "Make sure you're taking it easy, any arson case especially one where the arsonist has struck many times before can be tough, remember that." "I got it covered babe, you don't need to worry about me." "I'm always worried about you, now I have you AND our baby to think about here." "I know, I know. It's just you worrying that gets me worried and we both know that's a recipe for disaster." She stated with a slight chuckle. "I understand, but there's bound to be arguments and such, I mean you are working with changing hormones here." "Yeah, you're right. Anyways yeah, just wanted to check in on you and also let you know I get off at 10:00 tonight. Jonah figured I should have a set time for when I end, because soon enough there may be days I have to come in late or take a break in the middle of shift, who knows." "Well as your husband, I'm inclined to agree. That also means I know you well, so I have to ask- How do you feel about that?" "Honestly? I think it's best, I'm also working on one, off three and then when the baby comes we will revisit because things will definitely be crazy the first few months." "Oh, you're thinking about sticking with OFI after the baby comes?" "Well, I'm actually not sure yet. I was just putting it out there. Casey was slightly confused, but he decided right now wasn't the best time to bring it up not wanting to possibly upset her and he could get called out to a fire at any moment. "Okay babe, that makes total sense. We can talk about this later. I should do more of this paperwork." "Sounds good, talk to you later and I love you, be safe." "I love you too, bye!" After getting off the phone with his wife, he proceeded to do more paperwork for about 15 minutes until they got a call for Truck 81 and Ambulance 61 to respond to a structure fire. They took about two hours to put out the fire and rescue everybody safely and luckily there were no casualties. After overhaul was over and their tools and gear were packed up, they started to head back to the rig. When they got back, everyone made their way to the bunks to sleep or the common room to hangout. Casey made his way to his office to try and get some sleep for as long as the fires would allow. He tried and tried to get some rest back and forth for a half hour and then he decided to check the time on his phone. It was 11:00 meaning Gabby was off shift so he decided to call her and see what was up. When he did this, there was no answer. He decided to call her again and this time she picked up the phone. "Hey babe, couldn't sleep?" Gabby asked. "That and I wanted to hear your voice." "So sweet, how has your shift been?" "It's been good we've had a couple calls today, most of them took a couple hours each." "How's the case been?" "Slow, but it's expected we are still in the basics, can't say much of course." "Yeah I understand, I just wanted a general answer. You still doing good?" "Yes, I've been a little nauseous, but I'm home now so it's a little better." "You need me to take off early? Hermann can take over 81 for the rest of the shift and Boden will definitely understand." "Babe, no. I'm fine, I think the nausea has officially passed. Don't leave shift, please." "You sure? I have no problem coming home." "I'm good, I promise I would tell you if I wasn't." "Okay, fine." "Alright, well I love you, but I'm going to go so I can actually get some sleep." "I love you too, get some sleep." They ended the call and then Casey decided to try again for some sleep, hoping for a quick call with his wife and seeing all his men and women sleeping peacefully that he would be able to get some sleep before a call comes in. A couple hours had passed and it became morning, they still had to work this shift for around four hours or so. Their best option was to fuel up with some breakfast and hopefully be able to wake up a bit until their next call comes in.
At home, Gabby just woke up and had to go to the bathroom before she showered because of you guessed it… morning sickness. After she did what needed to be done she decided to get her shower out of the way so she could eat and then visit her husband and old coworkers for a bit while she had 62 hours off from arsons. After she showered and got dressed she took a minute to decide what she wanted to eat with her coffee, for a second she thought she didn't need anything to eat, but then she decided it was best to get a bite in. So she made her coffee and decided on a banana and toast to accompany it. She sat down with her breakfast and decided to watch some Youtube videos to get prepped for their parenting classes in a few weeks to prepare for their little Casey to come into the world. She did this while drinking her coffee and eating her breakfast, this took her about 20 minutes before she went to finish getting ready to head to the firehouse. She grabbed her keys, put on her coat and headed out the door to her car. The drive from their apartment to the firehouse was no more than ten minutes or so. After she parked, she grabbed what she needed and then walked up to the firehouse. When she made it to the garage she smiled as she saw her husband and Truck 81 doing some outside ladder drills. "Well look who it is!" Stella yelled out. Everyone turned around and as soon as the husband and wife met each other's eyes, a bright smile lit up the Captain's face. "Hey, beautiful." "Hey guys, Gabby said just before she shared a kiss with her husband, how's it going?" "It's a lot better now that you're here.'' Casey said with a light smile. "I definitely agree." Said Stella as she walked over to hug her friend. Everyone agreed all at once. Stella suggested they give the Captain and his wife some space to talk for a bit. Once everyone cleared out, Gabby and Matt went over to the bench by the end of the parking lot to take in the cool September breeze and chat alone. As soon as they took a seat and settled in, the bells went off. Luckily it was only for Ambo, so they had some more time. When Brett noticed them sitting there on her way out, she waved at them until they couldn't see each other anymore. "So, Brett has McAuley as my replacement?" Gabby asked. "Yes, yes she does. Poor girl." Casey replied and they both laughed. Casey put his arm around her and they began to talk. "So, bored with your down time already? It's only a couple hours into your few days off." "What? I can't see my husband at my old workplace for the fun of it?" "You're welcome anytime." "So it seems like an easy morning so far." "Oh definitely, got some nice sleep in after our phone call and then woke up and ate breakfast with the crew which is always nice." "Well I'm glad things are going well." Yep. Well we could always go inside so you can catch up with everyone else until we get our next call." They went inside and as soon as they went to meet everyone else in the common room, the bells rang for Truck 81 and Squad 3 to respond to a car accident. Casey gave her a quick kiss on the forehead and Gabby went into his office to wait for them to return and also hoped Ambo came back soon so she could talk to her best friend. She sat on her husband's bed in his office and decided to check her emails and order a couple of general things for the baby since they don't know the gender yet, but since she is almost 13 weeks it's coming sooner rather than later. She was soon interrupted by a knock at the door and when she told them to just come in she smiled when it was Brett. "Hey girl, how's it going?" Brett said just before pulling her into a big hug. "It's going, how are you?" Gabby replied. "I'm good apart from having McAuley as my partner. Can't decide if he or Chout is worse." "That's a tough one, I can't answer that." They both shared a laugh. "So 81 and Squad 3 got called with another Ambo to a car accident?" "Yes they did, about 30 minutes ago." "So how's everything going seriously?" Brett asked. "I'm doing really well, I'm just shy of 13 weeks so day by day I see myself starting to show." "That's wonderful, I'm so happy for you guys!" "Thanks friend." "How about we go to the common room, get some food?" "Let's do it." The two friends sat together and ate some snacks while further talking about what's new in their lives. They were eventually interrupted by Squad and Truck returning to quarters from their car accident. By the time everyone got situated back at the house Gabby was starting to feel tired and worn out so she decided it was best to call it a day and go back home. It took some convincing, but Gabby finally let him drive her back in his truck so nothing happened behind the wheel. As usual Gabby was worried about anything other than herself with what they would do with her car and Casey reassured her that he would figure out a way to bring it back home later on. After Casey helped Gabby get situated, he headed back to work. When he left, Gabby decided to try to take a nap knowing her husband would be back home in a couple of hours. When Gabby woke up again she checked the time on her phone and she realized she slept a couple hours. She started to fall back asleep until she heard the door being opened and then shut. She realized her husband just got home from shift and went to get up and greet him, but not before a wave of nausea hit her. She took a quick minute to brace herself and then walked out into the kitchen. "Oh hey." Casey said. "Hey, how was your shift?" Gabby replied back. "It was fine. We had a couple more calls after I got back, everything went well." They then shared a hug and kiss before sitting on the couch so they could talk further about their days. After a couple hours had passed, Gabby started to fall asleep on her husbands' shoulder. Quickly realizing she was fast asleep he decided the couch was where they would be sleeping tonight. He carefully adjusted her into him so they could move to laying down across the couch. Luckily there was a blanket on the floor next to the couch so he carefully grabbed it and wrapped it around them both, then he started to rest his eyes so he could hopefully fall back asleep. While he was still trying to fall asleep, he started rubbing Gabby's back in light circles as he heard her start to awaken a bit, so she could fall back asleep easily.
A couple days have passed and Gabby has to go back to work again. As she's getting ready for the day, she sips her coffee and picks at some almonds and raisins. After getting dressed she decides to put on some mascara as she feels a little more tired than usual. Matt has already been at work for almost 12 hours so she just puts the rest of her coffee in a to-go cup and heads out the door. After she pulled up into her parking spot she had a routine of parking in, she shut off her car and walked into work. When she got there, Gabby and a couple of her coworkers shared quick hellos as she walked to her desk. When she got situated she got ready for her interviews with some witnesses and some cashiers or managers at stores that came in contact with Suspect Baker. After about two hours of non stop interviews, it was time for Gabby's lunch break. She has 30 minutes so she decided to pick at her lunch and try to call her husband. She had no luck the first time around, so she tried a second and third time. When those didn't work she figured it was either a bad time or they were out on a call. She had 20 minutes left of her break so she decided it was best to just finish her food and use the bathroom before she had to go back to shift. After she cleaned up her mess, she went to the bathroom which was a floor up from the main floor as the only level to not have a bathroom was of course the main level. She went to wash her hands and after she did this she went to head out and next thing she knew she felt an uneasy presence, but when she turned around there was no making up who was behind her. Before she could even think about running, the man knocked her out and before you know it her world turned black. It was Charles Baker, Charles Baker was in the OFI building, Charles Baker was about to strike again. He hasn't killed anyone in his fires yet, so that's probably why he opted to knock her out rather than just killing her right there. Since Duffy and Suzie were the main investigators along with Gabby yet they both had retired, the only main investigator left standing was Gabby. Back at the firehouse, Casey returns to his quarters and decides to check his phone before getting into the day's paperwork. When he did, he realized he had three missed calls from his wife. He decided to try and call her back, to see if she would answer him. When he tried the first time, it went straight to voicemail so he tried her again. The second time it went straight to voicemail too. He didn't think much of it and just went to do some paperwork. After finishing up his paperwork, he walked out into the common room and got some coffee. He sat down with a newspaper and his coffee at the table in between Severide and Kidd. After about 20 minutes the bells rang for all units to respond to a building fire at 61509 Wacker Drive. "Isn't that?" Casey said as he stopped in his tracks. "OFI." Kelly confirmed. "Oh God." When they arrived on scene, Casey tried to focus on giving his firefighters orders smoothly, but could get nothing out so Boden decided it was best if he stepped in and gave the orders instead, to Casey included. Squad and Truck entered the building and started to do their sweeps. When Casey and Severide entered the building, they started off on the main floor and worked their way into the Commander's office and Severide guided Jonah out by telling him to gather as many people as he could and start walking out of the building while staying low. As they started waving down the next group of workers he asked them if they saw where Gabriela Dawson went. One of them said break ended about 15 minutes ago and that she must've not made it back. Knowing there was no time to question, he waved them off and turned to Kelly. "We have to find her and we need to make it quick!" "Agreed." "Otis, Mouch, do you copy?" "Copy Captain." Mouch called out. "How's the sweep of the second floor doing?" We are starting to check the second half of the shut rooms now. What's up?" "They said Gabby never returned from her break and we can't find her." "Copy that, we got you." Otis added. When Otis and Mouch got to the second to last door on the right side of the floor, it was locked so they tried to peek through the little window frame on the door to see if anyone was near the door. There was too much smoke to see clearly. They had no choice, but to bust through the door. As Mouch got prepared to do this, Otis radioed his Captain again and told him what was going on. "Oh my God." Was all Casey and Severide heard through the radio. Without questioning further they ran up the stairs and onto the second floor. When Casey entered the wide open door there was no preparation for seeing his wife laying there unconscious. "Gabby."
