It's been two weeks since Gabby's attack and 11 days since she was released from the hospital. To say the last two weeks were a whirlwind of emotions for the mom to be would be an understatement. Ever since Gabby woke up and received the news she was attacked by arsonist Charles Baker, she was feeling many emotions regarding her physical attack. She wasn't hurt too bad thank God, but the attack happening while she was 13 weeks pregnant and who it was were the two main reasons the attack had such an emotional toll on her and on Casey even. They were both so thankful that no harm was done to the baby and not too much had been done to Gabby herself. This was another blunt reminder that it wasn't just each other they had to think about, they also had to think about the growing life inside of Gabby. To be totally honest, she wasn't doing too good. Matt swears she's better than he is though. Gabby is the love of his life and the mother of his child, he couldn't bear losing her, living this wonderful life without her. The thought scared him and he didn't want to think about how it almost became a reality, he couldn't. Gabby's physical trauma was healing day by day, but that didn't stop the emotional pain the attack was causing. She couldn't sleep, she could barely eat and she didn't want to get out of bed unless she needed to shower or throw up. It was getting depressing and Matt had tried everyday to get her to go take a walk, visit the firehouse, go for a peaceful drive, even sit outside on their front porch. He hadn't gone to work because he couldn't get any sleep and he was constantly worrying sick about his wife and what the aftermath of her attack was doing to her. Gabby took a month off of work, but Casey was supposed to go back a week ago. He barely takes any time off so luckily he could survive by not going for a little while longer. Also, her and Matt aren't on the best of terms lately. He chalked it up to hormones from the pregnancy and from the attack. Their main fight is because Gabby has wanted Matt to go back to work when he was supposed to and Casey would always tell her that he couldn't leave her alone at the house, so that caused her to fight with him. It was like she was holding it against him every second, with every word she said, every response she gave him. She was an independent woman, she was always an independent woman and she had a hard time letting people in and letting them help her, even her own husband. It's not that she doesn't appreciate him and everything he does for her, because she totally does, but when she wants something she doesn't stop fighting for it. She wants him back at work and out of her hair, while he doesn't want to leave her until she can get out of bed and do something with herself. He loved her, but this routine they fell into was getting out of hand. This time he couldn't suggest or try to get her out of bed, he NEEDED to. It's been over two weeks and he couldn't bear to see his wife so down and tired. It was okay to get some rest, she needed it now more than ever while she was still finishing up her physical healing, but now he needed her to work towards getting back to her happy self. In order for that to happen he needed to get her out of this damn bed no matter the consequences.
"Gabby babe, it's time to get up." Matt pleaded for the third time where once again she gave no reply. "Gabby, you need to wake up." "No, I need more sleep." "Honey it's 1:00 in the afternoon, you've been sleeping since 8:45 last night." "If you went to work like I've suggested the past week then you wouldn't care so much about how late I was sleeping in." "Gabby, please don't do this again!" Casey pleaded with her. "Ugh, do what Matt?!" Get you to start your normal life again, which involves working and not being stuck taking care of me?" Gabby, I'm never stuck, I do it because I want to." "In sickness and in health, remember?" "I get that of course, but you need to get back to work, we could both use the normalcy to get things back on track." "Fine, you know what?" "What?" "I'll go back to work tomorrow… on one condition." "And what might that be?" "I'll go to work if you get out of bed and start getting back to your normal. You've been non-stop cooped up in this bed only getting up sporadically throughout the day to use the bathroom. I need you to get up, take a shower, go outside, read a book at the kitchen table, hell even sit up on the couch and watch the news or turn on a couple movies. Just something to get you more active like I'm used to. I miss my happy wife." He ended the small talk with a light smile like he always does. "You know what, you're right." "Uh, what was that? Gabby let out a scoff. "Can you say that again? I don't think I heard you." He let out a chuckle as Gabby started to for the first time in a long time, actually laugh. "I'm not saying it again, but you heard me." "I did." "Okay, let's do it. I'll get up and take a nice shower, then we can go from there. Okay?" "Deal." Gabby let out another laugh and leaned in for a quick kiss on the lips. "I'll be out soon then we can have some breakfast at the kitchen table. 'I like the sound of that." He leaned in for the kiss this time.
After Gabby took a much needed hot shower she finished her skin care and got dressed, then she was ready to meet her husband in the kitchen for some waffles and eggs. "Hey baby, breakfast is almost ready." Casey greeted his wife. " I can see that, it smells good." They shared a quick kiss as Gabby made her way to take a seat at the kitchen table for the first time in a long time. Much to her surprise, it actually felt good to get up and do something other than mope in bed and wallow in her sorrows. She went through a lot, she understands that, but it feels good to take the next step in moving past this and getting ready for the next stage of this journey. Gabby had a lot of things to look forward to. She's early on in her second trimester and at 15 weeks is getting prepared to hear the baby's heartbeat for the first time soon and a little less than a month and a half away from finding out the baby's gender, she's going back to work soon and hopefully this time she can do all she can to catch Baker and make him pay for his crimes.
After about 10 minutes their breakfast was already ready so Casey made them both a plate and gave Gabby hers first so she could get a headstart while he got them drinks and napkins. They sat together and had a proper meal for the first time in a couple weeks. They talked about what they wanted to do for the day while they were finishing up their breakfast. "Do you have to call Boden to ask if you can start back up at work again?" "It's probably enough time in advance for him to let the relief Captain know he doesn't need to go in tomorrow." "Yeah you're probably right, I'll call him after we finish cleaning up from breakfast." "Sounds good, should we go to the store for the week after you call or you could even do it on the way there?" "Yeah we should go out after I take a quick shower then I'll call him." After Matt finished his shower and got dressed, he made his way back out to their living room to put his shoes on then grab his coat, wallet and keys to head out in the car to meet his wife who was waiting for him in the passenger seat.
It was officially Tuesday morning and Casey was ready to head out the door for his first day at work after being off for two weeks. Gabby was finishing her coffee in the living room while watching the hockey game that was being displayed on their television. "I'm heading off to work. I'll see you in the morning." "Be safe and have a good shift. I love you." "I love you too, both of you." Casey said while giving Gabby a kiss and then bent down to place a hand on her growing stomach. After Casey made the commute from home to work it was finally time to get back in the game and head inside.
As he made his way to the Chief's office, he was greeted by the rest of the first shift who were finishing up in the house before heading home as the second shift started to come in. Casey got up to the door and did a double knock before entering as Boden called him in. "Hey Casey, are you ready to be back after Gabby's attack?" "More than ready, should've come back even earlier." Boden laughed. "Good to hear Casey. Everything going okay with Gabby? The baby?" "Yes, I finally got Gabby to get out of bed yesterday so I think she's ready to move past the emotional toll this has caused and the baby is still doing great and growing every day." Casey finished. "That's great to hear, I'm so glad you're starting to experience a bit of normalcy." "Anything else Chief?" "That's it, I just wanted to make sure I checked in with you before you started shift." "I appreciate that Chief." They said their final goodbyes as Casey made his way out of Bodens office and into the locker room to put his stuff away before roll call. As he was walking out of the locker room, he ran into Kelly. "Oh hey, welcome back Case. How's Gabby?" "Much better actually, I think she's finally starting to get back to her normal self." "That's great to hear man, how are you doing?" "I'm doing okay, a little nervous about her being alone for the first time in a while, but I'll be fine." They took their places in the back of the room and waited for Boden to arrive for morning announcements. He was able to talk for a few minutes before the bells rang calling for Squad 3, Truck 81 and Ambulance 61 to respond to a structure fire a couple blocks over. The call took about 2 hours before they were back at the station. Casey made his way into his office and took a seat at his desk. He had to look over all the paperwork left from the relief captain and finish up what he had to do after the latest structure fire so he could give it all to Boden by the end of the night. He was pulled from his thoughts when he heard ringing coming from his right side. When he checked to see who it was before answering a bright smile lit up his face when he saw it was his wife calling him. "Hey baby, everything okay?" "Oh yeah everything is great, I just wanted to check in to see how things were going." "Oh they're okay, we just got back from a structure fire, it was a lot but everybody made it out alive." "That's great to hear! What do you think about me coming by the house?" "I would love that, you know you never have to ask!" "I know I was just checking to see if now was a good time." "It's as good of a time as any, come on by." "Okay I love you, see you soon." Considering Gabby would be here soon he decided he would finish up the last of the paperwork so he could focus all of his attention on her until they got another call. Casey got a text from Gabby letting him know she just left and will be there soon. When Gabby arrived at the firehouse she grabbed her purse and headed inside. When she walked into the common room to look for her husband she found Hermann, Otis, Cruz, Brett and Stella. "Hey guys." Gabby spoke to the group, everyone focusing their attention on Gabby. "Hey!" They all replied back in unison. "How are you momma?" Stella was the first to ask her how she was doing. "I'm pretty good, just came here to see Casey." "He's in his office finishing up some paperwork." Hermann told her. "Thank you." Gabby said then walked off to find her husband.
Gabby knocked on his door and greeted him as she entered. "Hey you, glad you could make it." They shared a quick kiss before she sat down on his bunk, Casey turning in his chair to face his wife. "Do you need to finish your paperwork right now?" "Nah. It can wait, you're here. Casey replied with a smile. "Okay fine." "So how are you?" "I'm pretty good, it feels nice to get out of the apartment for a bit." "I bet." They talked for a few short minutes until they heard a knock on the door. It was Severide so they waved him in. "Hey guys how's it going?" "Pretty good." Gabby answered for both of them. "How's baby?" "Baby is good, we're at 13 weeks so at the next appointment, we should be able to find out what we're having. Gabby boasted. "Wow you guys, that's so great!" Before they could finish their conversation the bells went off for all companies to respond to a structure fire. "I'll probably be back home by the time you're done, I'll see you in the morning?" "You will." Casey gave his wife a quick kiss on the head before running out to the rig.
Gabby woke up a couple hours before Casey got off shift so she decided to get some laundry done. She started to get a bad headache, so she took some medicine. Her options were limited based on her being pregnant. She decided to lay down and get some rest, hoping her husband would be home soon. Casey arrived home and when he got back in the house, he took his coat and shoes off then went to look for Gabby. "Gabby, I'm home, where are you? "In the bedroom!" Gabby called out from their room. "Hey baby, you feeling okay?" "I'm fine, just have a bad headache." "I'm sorry baby, did you take anything?" "Yeah about 30 minutes ago." Gabby replied softly. "Okay well maybe a nap will help?" "Yeah that's what I was hoping for." "Okay." Casey replied with a smile. "Wait, why don't you join me?" Gabby spoke up. "Thought you'd never ask."
