"Are you my sister?" The little girl, Morgan, asked Katya nearly as soon as she'd stepped through the door. Most of the funeral was supposed to take place outside, but Katya arrived early after hitching a ride with Happy from the compound, and had been invited into the living room, where Tony's Iron Man mask sat on the coffee table as if it were a daily occurrence- nothing more than a paperweight.
"Your sister?" Katya laughed, "No, I'm not-" she made eye contact with Pepper over Morgan's head, who smiled- this woman was somehow still able to smile-
"Tony talked about you a lot."
It clicked. "Oh, right. Well yeah, then, I am your sister- I'm sorry I've been gone so long." Your whole life, she thought sadly. She still couldn't believe she'd been gone for five years.
Morgan kicked her mary-jane clad feet, which barely reached off the couch cushion. "It's okay. Daddy'd always said you'd come back one day."
"And here I am!" Katya said, as cheerfully as she could, and covered the girl with a hug. The girl giggled and fought her way out of Katya's arms playfully. Katya had no idea what was in store for her future- all she knew was that in theory she was going to be staying at the Avenger's compound for now- but she wouldn't mind being the big sister, for once.
"Is Uncle Peter coming too?"
Katya looked up at Pepper, who was watching them fondly. "He talked about you both a lot."
Katya smiled down at the little girl. "Well yeah, he should be here any minute, actually."
More people were arriving now, if the commotion from outside was any indicator. Katya stood up. "Let me go find him."
"Can I come with you?"
A nod from Pepper told her that yes, she could, so Katya gathered the girl up in her arms and went outside to find Peter.
T'Challa, the King of Wakanda, Okoye, and Shuri were there- as were Clint and his family, along with Cap, Sam, and Rhodey. There was another kid around her age she didn't recognize, standing a bit apart from the crowd, which struck Katya as odd, but his eyes were as solemn as everyone else's, so he must've been there for a reason. Tony'd had a whole life before he'd even met Katya.
It was still weird to think of some of them with their first names- people she'd never even met prior to the last battle with Thanos, but something about a near universe-ending battle bonds people like that, and she'd get corrected anytime she tried to use anyone's title.
There were more people due to come, but still no sign of Peter.
"Is that him?!" came Morgan's voice from her shoulder and she turned around to where the little girl was pointing. It was, in fact, Peter, getting out of a car with May in tow. Katya rushed over to him.
She put Morgan down momentarily before throwing her arms around Peter, who returned the hug, his grip solid and solemn. She knew how he felt- she'd spent most of the ride up in the car in tears, the divider between Happy and herself up more for Happy's sake than her own- they were all hurting. They've all been hurting. But funerals took time to plan, so for the entire week, everyone'd had to shove it in their back pockets.
Katya pulled away but kept her forehead pressed to his, and she could see him smile- a small, sad smile, but a smile all the same. "We're going to get through this." She whispered to him. "Ya tebya lyublyu."
"I love you too." He whispered back, his voice raspy, giving away the fact that he'd probably cried during his own car ride, as well.
Katya pulled her head back from his but kept their fingers intertwined. "Also," she added, louder and more cheerful for Morgan's benefit, "Apparently you have a niece." She gestured with their left hands at the girl, who was beaming up at the both of them with excitement.
Peter sent her a quizzical look, which Katya answered with one that must have conveyed enough information, because he crouched down to the girl's level. "Hey there-"
"Morgan," Katya informed him.
"-Morgan, it's me, your Uncle Peter!" His small, sad smile grew larger as the girl reached forward to hug him as well. He held her close- cradling the last remaining part of Tony Stark for both the teenagers in his hands- before letting her go. "Should we go inside and see your mom?"
Morgan grabbed Katya's hand with her free one. "She says we're gonna watch a movie first, and then put Daddy in the lake."
Katya had no idea what that meant, and a quick glance to Peter showed that he didn't, either, but neither commented on it.
