Bella's Point of View

My heart was thumping out of my chest as we reached the meeting spot. The moon was shining brightly overhead. Of course, I was drenched to the bone. The rain hasn't let up for even a second. Luckily, Esme had picked up some supplies to keep the babies out of this weather. They were bundled up, nice and dry under a huge umbrella. Emmett held them both, wrapped up in a moby wrap that he kept hung over his shoulders. Both of them seemed comfortable. But I didn't want them out here much longer than necessary. They were just born a few days ago. I prayed they wouldn't get sick because of this meeting.

We stood in a clearing, several miles from the bustling city. A mountain range could be spotted in the distance. Large trees obscured my visual of the area, the only thing was this small patch of open field. The leaves rustled with each gust of wind, yet the air was so humid. Sweat ran down my neck. It was difficult to breathe. The only one that seemed bothered by all of this, was me. The Cullens seemed completely unphased by the weather. They stood, like gorgeous statues. Their pale skin was a sharp contrast in the stark darkness that surrounded us.

Carlisle stood at the front of the group, symbolizing his leadership over the rest of his family. He would be the one and only person to speak directly to Sam Uley. We were warned for the others to remain at a safe distance behind him and to not make any sudden movements. Emmett and I were positioned at the very back, several steps behind the others. It was the safest place for Emerson and Greyson. They would be out of direct view.

It hit seven a clock, the wolves should be here. It was startlingly quiet. The atmosphere was tense and ominous. I saw movement at the tree line, opposite from where we stood. I felt like my heart was going to erupt.

Out of the corner of my eye, I noticed Edward shift. "They arrived. Be on guard. There are inconsistencies in their thoughts."

Everyone tensed into a protective position. I heard a few low growls bouncing around the group. I couldn't tell where it was coming from. But one glance in Emmett's direction made the hairs on my arms rise. The look on his face. I couldn't put it into words. His senses were heightened. More angry. More fierce. More protective. On levels that I've never seen from him. He was fully dialed in and ready to kill. It was frightening. So this is the true face of a vampire, preparing to kill.

One single wolf moved out into the open. I felt my jaw drop open with a gasp. The size of the beast had completely thrown me off guard. I was expecting a normal sized wolf. Small, but fast. That isn't what we had here. This wolf was the size of a large bear.

Again I noticed Edward shifting, his shoulders hunched over. "The rest are circling around us. Not leaving any ways of escape. This doesn't look good."

I felt my heart drop into my stomach. My mouth had gone dry. My legs trembled as I inched closer to Emmett. He sensed my fear, but it only added to his aggressiveness. A snarl ripped through his teeth, as he bared his fangs at the wolf.

Carlisle quickly lifted his hand up, looking to Emmett with a look of concern. Their eyes met. Carlisle shook his head slowly. Emmett backed down slightly, but remained hyper aware of his surroundings. His eyes scanned over the area.

"When I say, you need to take the boys and get behind me." He looked at me, with a heaving breath.

I nodded quickly, getting frazzled by how quickly this situation was turning. I didn't know what to think. My thoughts were a mess. My body quivered, my legs went numb. I felt like I could run a mile without stopping. The response to this threat had me in 'fight or flight' mode. And I clearly was no match for a pack of huge wolves. But I'd give it my all to try to escape. My babies depended on me. I'd do whatever it takes. But I was petrified of Emmett getting hurt. I wouldn't want to leave him behind to fight. I don't know what I could possibly do without him.

Carlisle looked to Edward now. They exchanged nods and slowly began to approach the huge black wolf. I held my breath, watching, waiting for something to happen.

"Hello Sam, thank you for meeting with us." Carlisle announced with a cautious but friendly smile.

The wolf made no move to respond. But Edward tilted his head slightly, as if acknowledging something. "Sam would like to remain in his current form to communicate. He doesn't trust us."

Carlisle nodded in understanding. "That's perfectly fine. Whatever makes you comfortable. We won't take up much of your time. We just wanted you to see that the children aren't threats in the slightest."

Edward and the wolf made eye contact. It was brief, before Edward flickered his eyes to Emmett. "He would like to see them. Approach slowly."

There was a reluctance in Emmett's expression as he took a few slow steps. I made sure to follow closely behind him. We already spoke earlier. I would remain at his side for this entire exchange. He didn't want me to ever be this close to a wolf, but it was something I had to do. If something happens, I want to be useful. I wanted to protect my babies, with my life. I am human, so there may not be much I can do against that kind of threat. But I will try.

Emmett nudged me behind him as we approached the black wolf. His brows were pulled together in a harsh line. His eyes are a little darker than usual. His shoulders trembled with a low growl in his throat. The wolf sensed the aggression and responded with a piercing growl.

Edward warily turned to Emmett. "Emmett, calm down. You aren't making this any easier." He muttered quietly with a frown.

Emmett didn't respond. Suddenly I felt a wave of forceful emotion roll down my spine. I was filled with tranquility. No doubt Jasper's doing. My body seemed to waiver for a moment as I tried to adjust to the sudden mood change. My head was dizzy, brought on by the sudden lack of stress. I almost tripped over my feet. Emmett must have felt the effects as well, his tense stance changed into something more casual and less threatening. Everyone seemed to loosen up a little. I never realized how useful Jasper's abilities were, but in this situation it was incredibly helpful. I would have to thank him later for this.

Carlisle cleared his throat, attempting to bring the conversation back on track. "As you can see, they are just as much human as they are vampires. Their hearts beat, blood runs through their veins, they are just infants."

There was a brief pause. Awkwardly I glanced between Edward and the wolf. I wanted so badly to hear what was going on. What was running through his mind?

The wolf took a few steps forward, sniffing the air around my babies. Emmett tensed, but didn't move. He allowed the wolf to get a little closer. But stayed at a safe enough distance to act, if he needed to.

"Sam is wondering why one is bigger than the other." Edward announced, looking at Carlisle.

"Good question. The first born, his name is Emerson, it appears that he may have acquired more of the vampire genetics. His growth rate is off the charts. He is progressing at a very alarming speed. It's truly fascinating. He could reach full maturity in just a few years time. But at this moment we don't know how fast he will continue to grow." Carlisle answered with a warm smile. "Greyson, on the other hand, has mostly human traits. The only thing that makes Greyson different from an average human is his strength."

Sam bobbed his head, slowly retreating, but being careful to never turn his back to any of us. He slowly backed away.

Edward raised a brow. "He agrees that Greyson won't be a threat. But he isn't in agreement about Emerson."

Emmett snarled, backing up quickly, his arms wrapped around my waist. He had us back behind the rest of his family in seconds. The suddenness of his actions brought on two more wolves to descend from the shadows. One on each side of us. They glared down at us with snarls, clenched fangs and hunched shoulders. They stalked in our direction. But Sam's warning growl stopped them in their tracks. I got the sense that he was the one in charge here. I was thankful that he stopped them. But my heart was racing so hard in my chest that I could barely breathe.

Sam called off his pack, just for a second, the wolf's eyes flickered between each of our faces. Calculating the situation. His ears were drawn back. The other wolves hesitated, there were three others. They had us surrounded, snarling and watching our movements carefully.

"Sam, he is just an innocent child. We would never allow him to hurt anyone. He is quite intelligent. I know we can teach him our ways of life. He won't be a threat to anyone." Carlisle urged, placing both of his hands up in a sign of peace.

The wolf raised his head, shaking it back and forth slowly, his back arched. It looked like he was getting ready to pounce.

Edward reached out to Carlisle, putting his hand on his shoulder. "He has made up his mind. He suggested that we bring Emerson forward, or the whole pack would act." His voice was grim.

A chorus of growls sounded from around me. Everyone now shifted to a protective circle around Emmett and me. My heart was doing flips in my chest, I moved as well, standing more in front of the twins. Emmett slowly moved the moby wrap, draping it over my shoulders. His eyes stared at the wolves.

"When there is an opening, I'll let you know to run."

I nodded, feeling tears begin to spill over my cheeks. My arms trembled as I wrapped my arms around them. Emerson smiled at me with bright blue eyes. Greyson was sleeping soundly. I turned around, searching for a way to escape. But a wolf moved into my direct line of sights. The wolf was much smaller than the others. It was thin and had a much higher pitched growl.

"Have a heart, he is just a baby." I yelled towards the small wolf.

The wolf's eyes went to Emerson, its body trembling with snarls. But as soon as Emerson met the wolf's gaze, I watched as everything went still. The growling stopped. Everyone was quiet. Edward snapped his head to look right at us. Astonishment was clear on his face. The small wolf took a few steps closer, but there were no signs of aggression.

Emmett hissed as he quickly moved in front of us.

"Wait," Edward said, moving to grab hold of Emmett's shoulder. "It appears Leah has imprinted."
