Chapter III
The next day, Bella got up and got dressed (after throwing up a few times once again), ate a small breakfast that she was able to keep down, and left her home headed to the Reservation. Edward had been with her that morning, not particularly wanting her to head to La Push to see Jacob, but she was determined to confront him about why he wasn't talking to her. Of course, she didn't let Edward know that she already suspected why her best friend was ignoring her. Her boyfriend had been reluctant to let her go, but he did in hopes that perhaps she and Jacob would make up and she could stop worrying about him.
By the time she crossed over into La Push's borders, Bella suddenly felt nauseous again. However, she willed the sick feeling away. Throwing up was not going to deter her from confronting Jacob today. Pulling up in front of the little red house that was the Black home, Bella parked her truck and got out of it, stumbling a bit but otherwise keeping her balance. Walking up to the front door, she knocked on it and waited for someone to answer. A moment later, the door opened to reveal Billy.
Billy blinked up at Bella and greeted, "Hello Bella."
"Hi Billy," Bella replied with a small smile. "Is Jacob home?"
"No, he's not in right now. He's doing Pack stuff with Sam right now."
Bella knew he was lying but decided to play along to see how far he'd take it. "Oh, well do you know if he'll be back soon?"
"I don't think he'll be back any time soon. Why don't you come back later?"
"No, I'll wait. I'm here to talk to Jacob and I'm not leaving until he talks to me. Or better, until he exits this house and come face me instead of hiding like a coward."
She purposely rose her voice when saying that last sentence, knowing good and well Jacob would hear her in hopes of it baiting him to come to the door. Billy looked slightly put out and was going to try once again to get her to leave, but Jacob soon appeared from down the hall glaring at her over his father's head. Moving around his father, Jacob simply said, "Stay inside, dad."
Billy looked between his son and Charlie's daughter, knowing that whatever had been festering for the past three weeks was about to explode. He felt he needed to be there, but he also was going to let Jacob handle this himself. Nodding, he rolled backwards and bit before closing the door, leaving Jacob and Bella to themselves on the porch.
The two of them stared at each other for a moment before Jacob asked almost rudely, "What do you want?"
"What do I want? I want to know why you're ignoring me and rebuffing every way of me reaching out to you," Bella said, her tone demanding he tell her the truth.
Jacob bristled and glowered at her saying, "Oh, don't act like you don't fucking know. But if you really need to have them listed out, then fine. One: you went off to save that leech."
"I couldn't let Edward die, Jacob."
"He's already dead, but you somehow refuse to believe that. Two: you're back together with him and acting like nothing happened. And three: you not only don't acknowledge how I feel about you, but you used me."
The brunette blinked at him in bewilderment before asking, "How did I use you?"
"You used me for sex, Bella!"
"I did not! I wanted to!"
"Yeah, but while still thinking of your leech! Damn it Bella, I gave you my virginity!"
"You took mine, too!"
Jacob let out a frustrated groan. "You know what? That's besides the point. Bella, no matter how you look at this, you used me for sex, then blew me off for your leech knowing damn well what we had just did and how I feel about you. Did you even consider how that would make me feel? That was the best night of my life because I spent it with the love of my life, you don't even care because it meant nothing to you! All you care about if Edward fucking Cullen!"
Tears filled Bella's eyes, but she refused to let them spill over. "That is not true! And it's not fair for you to say that to me, Jacob!"
"It is true. I bet you probably haven't even told Cullen about what we did before you got back together with him."
When Bella didn't answer him like he expected her to, he looked at her incredulously while her face burned with shame. In disbelief, he exclaimed, "Oh my God, you haven't!"
Bella shook her head. "Because I don't want Edward to know. It would cause too much trouble for me and-"
"I don't believe this! Not only did you use me, but now I'm your dirty little secret?"
Jacob clutched his hair in aggravation, storming past her down the stairs of the porch and headed towards the woods. Bella hurried after him saying, "Jake, wait! Let's just talk about this!"
Whirling around to face her, the look on Jacob's face stopped Bella in her tracks. His look was murderous at best and furiously hurt at worst. He didn't even look like her Jacob anymore; there was no hint of the sunny, loveable Jacob that she knew. She opened her mouth to speak, but Jacob beat her to it.
"We have talked about it, Bella. And you know what? You can go fuck yourself and fuck your half-assed feelings and excuses. You made your choice, and it isn't me, and I regret that that night even happened, that I gave something to you that you don't give a shit about, or give a shit about my feelings or me. Now just go. Don't come back and leave me the hell alone."
Bella stood in shock as she watched him walk into the woods and disappear from sight. The tears that she hadn't let fall before slid down her cheeks, and she bit her lip to keep the sobs that were wracking her body in. Wiping her tears, she turned and headed back to her truck, getting in and cranking it up. As she turned to leave, she saw Billy looking out the window at her, and her sobs escaped as she realized he had heard everything.
Quickly driving away and back home, Bella couldn't stop her tears from falling. Her heart ached in her chest from how hurt Jacob was. He had once told her that her pain was his pain, and she found that it was the same for her in this instance. Jacob was heartbroken because of her, and in turn so was she. Jacob's feelings for her, she knew about them, but it was sometimes easier to ignore them, but she understood why Jacob felt she was. He believed that she had used him and his feelings to sleep with him, but that wasn't true. She had wanted to have sex with Jacob that night; it had felt more like lovemaking, anyway. She had acknowledged the feelings that she had hidden for him that night and acted on them. Even now she could acknowledge that she still had feelings for Jacob, but they didn't matter now. Jacob wasn't talking to her anymore, and Edward was back in her life. But that didn't stop her heart from hurting and her tears from continuously falling.
The rest of the weekend was terrible for Bella. She spent it mostly crying because of her disastrous conversation with Jacob. And even now with it being Monday, she was still upset over it. Edward, having spent the rest of the weekend with his love, was pissed at the Shifter for making Bella upset and cry. He wanted to know what exactly it was that they had fought about, what it was that Black had said to the brunette to make her cry, but she refused to tell him. And he couldn't make her tell him, but he wished she wasn't so upset about their fight. He didn't believe she'd be this upset about it, and if she was, she wouldn't be crying like this.
The morning went by and by lunchtime, Bella had worried herself so much into a tizzy over her fight with Jacob, that she was crying all over again. Damn it, she didn't think she'd still be this emotional about it, but she was. She walked with Edward through the halls to head to the bathroom when she suddenly stopped, feeling incredibly nauseous. She tried swallowing multiple times to keep the sick feeling at bay, but it wasn't working.
Edward, noticing her pale complexion, gently touched her shoulder and asked in concern, "Are you alright, Bella?"
Instead of answering, Bella ran into the nearest restroom and into the first stall, dropping to her knees and throwing up into the toilet. She felt cool hands holding her hair back and rubbing her back as she threw up. When she finally stopped, she looked over her shoulder with watery eyes to see Alice looking at her in concern. Nodding at her, she softly said, "I'm okay."
"Are you sure?" Alice asked in return, reaching to flush the toilet for the brunette.
Bella nodded and went to the sink to wash her mouth out before exiting the bathroom with Alice, finding Edward waiting anxiously. He took her into his arms and held her close, pressing her flushed face into his neck to help cool her off. She sighed into his embrace before muttering that she just needed some fresh air. The Cullen siblings wasted no time in getting Bella outside, thinking that it would help her a bit.
As soon as they stepped outside, Angela walked up to them. Smiling she greeted, "Hi Bella, hi Edward, hi Alice."
"Hi!" Alice chirped.
"Hello Angela," Edward said politely with a kind smile. Of all the humans Bella surrounded herself with, he liked Angela. He believed she was the only one worth being around, to be honest.
Angela turned to Bella, prepared to ask her if she'd like to go off campus with her and the others for lunch—inviting Edward and Alice, of course—but stopped when she saw just how sick Bella looked. Worried, she asked, "Bella, are you feeling okay? Are you sick?"
Bella was going to reply that she was just fine, but instead became lightheaded and very dizzy. The wave of dizziness caused her to sway a bit, and she felt something dripping out of her nose. Angela looked at her alarmed saying, "Bella!"
Edward looked and saw Bella's nose bleeding, quickly getting a napkin out of his pocket and pushing it to her nose. Bella swayed once more before jerking violently to the side, falling towards the ground as she passed out, vaguely hearing shouts and her name being called as she succumbed to darkness.
When Bella woke up, she recognized the familiar white ceiling of a hospital room. Looking over, she found not only Edward watching her anxiously, but Charlie as well. Smiling sheepishly, she said, "Hi dad."
Charlie looked at her sternly before asking, "Do you even know how worried I was when your boyfriend called me to tell me you were in the hospital? Why didn't you tell me you were sick, kiddo?"
"Because I didn't want to worry you over some stupid stomach bug."
"It doesn't matter, Bella. Stupid or not, you should have told me so I could have done something."
Guilt swamped Bella as she knew her father was right, but she was so used to being independent, that she forgot Charlie was there for her. Before she could apologize for making her father worry, the door opened and Carlisle stepped inside the room. A troubled expression decorated the blond doctor's face, and based on Edward's also troubled face, Bella figured he was hiding his thoughts from him. What worried her more was when Carlisle told Edward, "Edward, please leave so I can talk to Bella and her father."
Her boyfriend looked as if he wanted to protest, but nodded and left, but not before giving her a kiss on her forehead. Bella knew that it was just to give the illusion of privacy for Charlie's sake, because she knew whatever Carlisle was going to say, Edward would still hear it from outside the room. The moment the door was closed, Bella asked, "What's wrong, Carlisle?"
Carlisle looked at his clipboard before looking at the brunette with a serious expression. In a rather tense voice, Carlisle said, "Well, after running some tests to see what is wrong, I have my results. Bella, you are almost one month pregnant."
