Chapter IV
Both Bella and Charlie stared in shock and disbelief at the blond doctor following his announcement. She was…pregnant? Pregnant? No, that couldn't be right. There was no way Carlisle had come to the conclusion that her ongoing sickness was due to her being pregnant; no way.
Shaking her head, Bella denied, "No, there is no way that I'm pregnant. I'm not pregnant."
Carlisle looked down at his clipboard before saying, "I can assure you Bella, that you are indeed expecting. I've run the tests three times just to be sure, and they all came back saying the same."
"Well, they're wrong! I'm not pregnant!" Even as she said this, she couldn't help but think that the symptoms that she had been experiencing eluded to pregnancy. Still, there had to be some sort of mix-up.
"Well, can you tell me when you had your last menstrual cycle?"
"It was…" Her eyes widened when she realized that she last had her period over a month ago, a week before her and Jacob had slept together. Realizing this, she stared up at Carlisle in shock while her face flushed, realizing and accepting that the conclusion that Carlisle had come to was true. She was indeed pregnant, and the father was Jacob.
Charlie, who had yet to say anything since the revelation of his daughter's illness, gave the doctor a hard look and said—more so ordered—with no room to argue in his voice, "Dr. Cullen, get out. I need to speak with my daughter."
Carlisle looked at him before glancing at Bella, then nodded and left the hospital room, closing the door behind him. Following his leave, silence flowed between the two, though the atmosphere was tense and heavy. Bella watched her father as stood with his hands on his hips, his gaze on some spot on the wall, but not on her. Anger was rolling off him, she could feel it, but it was a quiet, calm anger. And that kind of anger was scary; at least, it was to her.
Feeling like she needed to fill the silence before it got any heavier, she said, "I didn't mean to get pregnant, dad."
"I'm sure you didn't, Bella," Charlie replied tersely. "No young girl ever does, but it doesn't change the fact that you are."
He raked a hand through his hair as he began to pace, his silent anger dissipating and being replaced by outward annoyance. Charlie huffed before looking at her again, his chocolate brown eyes glaring into matching ones behind sooty lashes. "Jesus Bella, you're still in high school! You haven't even graduated yet! Don't you know that all your college plans—if you even made any—are now going to have to be put on hold? God, I can't believe you slept with that little prick, and after everything he's put you through! How could you have let him talk you into having sex with him?"
"He didn't," Bella mumbled.
"What?"
"He didn't," she said clearer. She felt the need to defend Edward here, knowing her father was unfairly casting blame on him for this. But then again, it wasn't a surprise he thought Edward had gotten her pregnant. With how happily she got back together with him, it made sense to her father that she would have slept with him. Of course, Edward would never touch her like that because he believed her too fragile.
Looking back at Charlie, she took a deep breath and said, "He never talked me into sleeping with him because I never did."
Charlie crossed his arms and glared at her harder. "Oh? Then how is it that you're pregnant? You've only ever dated that little shit."
Bella closed her eyes as she tried to calm her racing heart, but knew it was futile. She had to tell him, she had to tell her father the truth. It was the only way to calm him down. But she was scared and completely mortified to do so. Not only would she be admitting the truth to Charlie, but to Edward as well who was listening to every word being exchanged. His vampire ears had heard the news of her pregnancy, and now he was about to learn who had gotten her pregnant. Oh God, this was terrible!
"Well?" Charlie said impatiently.
Opening her eyes, Bella took another deep breath, admitting, "I slept with Jacob. The night I left with Alice to go rescue Edward, I had slept with Jacob beforehand, and haven't had sex since. Jacob is the father, dad."
Charlie stood wide-eyed at his daughter following her confession, not believing what his ears had just heard. And yet as the brunette looked down in her lap in embarrassment, he knew it was true. Jacob and Bella had had sex, and now she was pregnant with his baby. This was…well, it was shocking. And he couldn't help but have mixed emotions about it. However, he didn't have time to dwell on his mixed emotions about this development. No, not right now, not while this news was still fresh to him. That, and he believed he and his child needed to make some moves.
Recovering from his shock, Charlie nodded and said, "Alright then. Let's go."
Not waiting for her response, Charlie walked over to the room door and opened it, stepping outside and striding down the corridor. Bella followed her father out of the room, only to stop seeing Edward standing and staring at her in shock, a look of utter disbelief and betrayal on his face. Feeling tears prick her eyes at the expression on his Adonis face, she opened her mouth and said, "Edward, I-"
"Bella! Let's go! You can speak with that boy whenever you like, but not now!" Charlie's voice called, interrupting whatever she was going to say.
The brunette flinched before walking after her father, ducking her head as she did, not bearing to look back at Edward in fear of seeing his expression once again. She exited the hospital to find Charlie waiting by his police cruiser. He gestured for her to get inside, cranking up the cruiser and driving away from the hospital once she did and was buckled in. Silence flowed between them as Charlie drove while Bella simply looked out the window, her mind still reeling with the news that she was pregnant.
After ten minutes of silent driving, Bella finally looked over at her dad and asked softly, "Where are we going?"
Taking a curve, Charlie answered, "To La Push. Where else?"
"…Why?"
"To let your other half know he's going to be a father."
"Jacob isn't my other half. We're not together, we're not dating. And he's mad with me."
"It doesn't matter, Bella. That boy is just as deeply involved in this as you are and needs to know what's going on."
Bella looked back out the window, closing her eyes tightly as the voice in her head decided to speak to her, telling her that her father was right. Shaking her head, she couldn't help but think about her plans for her future. Not the college plans that Charlie was talking about, though. No, she was thinking of her plans to become a vampire. It was what she wanted, what she knew was her future, but now that she was pregnant, it had thrown a wrench in her clearly set in stone plans. And Edward…oh, what must he think of her? He must think that she's some hussy and like all those other girls now.
Before she knew it, they had made it to the Reservation and were soon pulling up in front of the Black family house. Charlie put the car in park and turned off the engine, getting out of it and Bella doing the same, albeit reluctantly. He marched up the stairs of the porch with his daughter following, knocking on the front door and waiting for it to be answered. A moment later, Billy opened it with a look of surprise on his face at seeing his best friend and his daughter in the middle of the day.
"Chief," Billy spoke. "Hi, I didn't expect you so early in the day. Hello, Bella. Please, come in."
"Billy," Charlie said as he waited for the man to roll backward in his wheelchair a bit before he stepped inside the house, Bella following behind him. Entering the living room, he told his daughter to take a seat on the couch before turning back to his friend. "Listen Billy, this isn't a social visit. This is something rather important, and we all need to discuss it; that includes that son of yours, too."
The tribe leader stared at his friend for a moment before blinking and saying, "Jacob isn't here right now, chief. Maybe you can come back later, and then we can discuss whatever it is you want to talk about."
"No, we'll wait; we've got time."
Billy's dark brown eyes darted between Charlie and Bella before settling on Bella. He looked at her intently, wondering what happened to cause Charlie to be so adamant that they speak now and wait for Jacob to come home. Bella turned her head to avoid his gaze, a look of mortification on her face. Furrowing his brows, he wondered if whatever needed to be discussed had to do with what he had overheard his son and Bella fighting about two days ago. He had a feeling that it did. Deciding to try to get a hold of his son, he told them to wait while he rolled over to the house phone.
As Billy picked up the phone and dialed a number, Bella couldn't help but feel like she was going to cry. This was all too much happening at once for her, and she really didn't want another confrontation about this. But it looked like it was going to happen anyway. And worse, Jacob and Billy were going to be present for it. As if her life couldn't get any worse concerning this, she groaned and put her face in her hands when Billy hung up the phone announcing that Emily Young stated Jacob would be on shortly. That meant that while her window of time before Jacob arrived back home grew shorter, the fast, nervous beating of her heart grew quicker. Five minutes later, the sound of footsteps on the porch were heard, and the doorknob turned. The front door opened, and inside stepped Jacob.
Upon seeing the brunette sitting on his couch, Jacob openly glared at her, not at all happy to see her after telling her to stay away. However, the expression fell from his face when he noticed Charlie was present, only to be replaced surprise and confusion at seeing the man looking pissed off. Slowly closing the door behind him, he asked, "What's going on?"
"Yes, I'd like to know that, as well," Billy said.
"Firstly, put on a shirt, boy; have some decency," Charlie told Jacob, frowning at seeing the young man shirtless in front of not only him, but Bella as well.
Bella, so used to seeing Jacob without a shirt nowadays, hadn't even noticed he wasn't wearing one until her father pointed it out. Chocolate brown eyes looked right at Jacob's bare, muscular abdominals and pectorals, and she couldn't help but blush at seeing them, turning her head while Jacob slightly flushed in embarrassment at the police chief's words. Nodding, he quickly went to his room and came back pulling a t-shirt over his head. Once he was fully dressed, he said, "Okay, I'm dressed. Now will someone tell me what's going on?"
Charlie looked at his daughter and said expectantly, "Bella, tell him."
Reluctantly, Bella looked up at Jacob and announced, "I'm pregnant Jake, and it's your baby."
Jacob stood stock still in shock, his dark brown eyes wide as he stared at the brunette following her words. Even Billy was shocked, though he also didn't look as surprised as he probably should have been. Luckily, Charlie didn't notice his expression as he was too busy looking at Jacob to gage his reaction. Jacob blinked at the girl before asking, "Are you sure?"
Immediately feeling incensed by the question, Bella glared at him and answered, "Yes, I'm sure. You're the only person I've ever had sex with, Jacob."
"When did this happen?" Billy asked, even though he already had a feeling as to when. He just felt he needed to hear one of them say it just to confirm it. "I didn't know your relationship had progressed so far."
"It hasn't, quite frankly," Jacob growled out, his hard glare back on his face. "She used me for sex, and then ran right back to Cullen."
Bella huffed in anger and stood up from her seat, her eyes blazing at Jacob for still saying she had used him. "I did not! I wanted to at the time, and you know it! I even said I was sure when you asked me if I was!"
"That doesn't change the fact that you never over Cullen, or else you wouldn't have run right back into his arms! And look what happened—you did! YOU FUCKING USED ME, BELLA!"
"I DID NOT!"
Charlie and Billy just looked at their offspring fighting, then looked at each other. The chemistry between the two, despite the fact they were currently at odds, was palpable. However, the yelling and accusing back and forth was helping nobody.
Stepping between the yelling teenagers, Charlie said, "Alright, that's enough. Look you two, no matter how you both feel about what happened between you, an innocent is now involved, and it's this baby."
"That's right," Billy said as he rolled up to join the other three. "This means now that you're going to have to work together and plan on co-parenting once the baby is born, since it seems that Bella has no plans on breaking up with Cullen, no matter how much we would prefer it."
He had ended the last part of his statement under his breath, but it was heard, nonetheless. Bella flushed in frustration and glared at Billy for what he said, though not having anything to say in reply because unfortunately, he was right.
Billy continued. "Furthermore, because you are pregnant by my son, you are now carrying the possible future chief of the Quileute tribe after Jacob, if the baby turns out to be a boy. I hope you know how big and important this is, as the tribal chiefs are passed down through the Black bloodline."
"But…but what if I don't want this baby?" Bella asked.
"You don't?" Jacob asked in return, an unreadable expression on his face, though his eyes betrayed the sadness he was feeling at her words. Seeing it made her heart clench in her chest.
Charlie, seeing that his daughter seemed to be overwhelmed by the aspect of carrying a future chief—damn it, Billy! Why'd he have to let her know that now?—spoke up saying, "Don't worry about the details right now, you two. The only thing you two should focus on now is being on the same page concerning the baby. And if you both aren't ready to talk about it now, then let your tempers and emotions calm before talking about it later. But no matter what, this needs to be discussed."
Jacob and Bella both knew Charlie was right. Despite the present animosity between them, they needed to be on the same page concerning the baby that they created. However, both couldn't help thinking that the other had different ideas in concerns to it. For Bella, she believed Jacob wanted to keep the baby. As for Jacob, he couldn't help but think that Bella didn't want it, just like she didn't want him.
Later that evening, Bella was lying in bed, not sure as to what she should do now. She never expected herself to have children, let alone have one now. But she also didn't expect to be pregnant by her best friend while dating her boyfriend, the love of her life. Speaking of the love of her life, she had been trying to call Edward ever since she had gotten home, but he wasn't answering his phone. She had even tried calling Alice, only for the other vampire to not pick up either. She had eventually given up, believing Edward must be furious with her.
Rolling over onto her side, Bella closed her eyes to try to get some rest, and hopefully rest her troubled mind. However, just as she was prepared to drift off to sleep, her phone chimed on her nightstand, alerting her to an incoming text message. Reaching over, she grabbed her phone and opened it to her text messages, happy to see that the text was from Edward. However, his message made her anxious.
We need to talk tomorrow.-Edward
