Change of Plans

Chapter XXII

Ever since Rosalie approached the wolves at the Treaty line to offer her help, they had had many meetings discussing whether they should trust her. She had stated that she was the only one of her coven that they could really trust, and granted, she seemed to be the one to keep things real without sugarcoating it. But it also made them wonder if there was something in all of this for her. After Embry and Leah had told the Pack about their encounter and what the vampire had offered, they all approached Jacob to hear what he had to say. Of course, there were a few voices that didn't believe the blond vampire and didn't trust her, but it ultimately came down to what their Alpha thought and said. And Jacob, as Alpha, decided that it would be in their best interest to trust in Rosalie.

Of course, Rosalie was already on their side, whether his Pack believed it or not. For Jacob, the fact that she let it be known where she stood from the beginning, even if it was really only to protect the baby growing inside of Bella, let him know she as trustworthy. That, and they had a shared affinity to stick it to Edward Cullen whenever they could. Not to mention the absolute trash-fest they would have whenever she'd visit Bella and talk about the mind reader. He didn't think he'd ever be friends with Rosalie like Bella, but he had respect for her, and she had a mutual one for him, and that was enough for him. Plus, if she was willing to help him protect Bella from Edward, the redhead, and her army, then she as all good in his book.

Jacob was aware Bella was having a sleepover with her friends, thus he decided to have a private meeting with Rosalie. He knew Bella was safe at her friend's house, but he had asked Quil to be on watch just in case. It wouldn't do if a certain Cullen showed up uninvited, or a certain redhead. So, when Quil went off to watch over Bella and her friends, he sent Rosalie a quick text asking him to meet him at the Treaty line. After five minutes of waiting, Rosalie appeared at the line, not crossing over it to not cause any unnecessary drama from the wolves (not Jacob).

"Hey Blondie," Jacob greeted casually.

"Hello dog," Rosalie replied just as easily. "Alright, I'm here. What do you want to talk about?"

Gathering his thoughts, Jacob began to speak. "As you know, we're currently doing some training with you all to prepare for the redhead and her newborns. But I've been having some thoughts, thoughts I don't think anyone has thought about."

Amber eyes stared at him before Rosalie said, "You mean Edward."

"Yes, him. I've been thinking that during the battle, with all of us distracted, he'll somehow slip through the fray and get to Bella. She's made it clear to him that she wants nothing else to do with him anymore, but I'm also not stupid enough to think he'll stay away."

"Yes, I know you're not as dumb as you can come off as." Rosalie ignored his glare as she looked up at the night sky. Looking back at him, she continued. "And you're right, I wouldn't put it past my brother to do something like that. I know Bella had an appointment yesterday and Carlisle overtook it."

Nodding, Jacob said, "Yeah, I figured him being there was more than him just wanting to perform the ultrasound."

Rosalie nodded. "It was. I overheard him talking to Esme last night about it. Apparently, he was supposed to talk to her about the pregnancy and her promise to the Volturi to convince her to terminate and stick to what she promised."

"But he didn't bring any of that up yesterday."

"I know, and the reason he didn't is because he could see for the first time how happy Bella was. Carlisle values human lives, and he wants everyone to be happy. And while he would like for Edward to be happy with Bella, if Bella is happy with you and happy with this baby you two created, he won't do anything to disrupt that."

"Let me guess. He was going to approach Bella about her promise at the mind reader's insistence."

"That's right, but as you see, Carlisle had a change of heart about the situation. But in doing so and trying to convince my stupid brother to leave well enough alone, Edward isn't going to just let it go. He thinks he owns Bella, that she is his property and it's killing him that she would choose you. He's becoming more unhinged than he already is, and it may have to come down to ending his life."

"That's fine by me. Hell, I'll do it in the middle of the battle if you want."

"Well, let's not go that far just yet." Even as she said this, Rosalie couldn't keep the smirk off her face. Clearing her throat unnecessarily, she looked up at Jacob and continued speaking. "I should also tell you that Alice is discussing hiding Bella during the battle so she doesn't get hurt."

Jacob nodded, in agreement with the Pixie for once. Even so, he also wasn't dumb enough to think Bella would agree to it. She was stubborn and would protest to sitting out while everyone else fought for her. And he knew she wouldn't forgive herself if anyone got hurt. Putting his hands on his hips, Jacob thought some more before looking back at Rosalie saying, "Bella won't like this."

Rosalie shrugged in response. "But she might not have a choice, though. It's not only for her safety, but that of the baby's. However, like you, I'm concerned with what Edward will do with everyone distracted. I think you should talk to Bella about it before the battle is fully upon us. And try and convince Bella to not to anything reckless. She'll listen to you before she listens to the rest of us."

Knowing she was right, Jacob told her that he would before telling her that he would see her tomorrow for another training meet-up. Rosalie told him 'goodnight' before leaving back for home, leaving Jacob standing at the Treaty line to think on everything that was said. Turning and walking back towards his home, he wondered if Bella would really be willing to stay put somewhere while he, the Pack, and Cullens were busy fighting. And furthermore, he hoped that everything leading up from now to the battle wouldn't go to shit before it needed to.

Bella sat curled against Jacob's large wolf body as she watched the training between the Cullens and Pack. Currently, she was watching Rosalie spar with Leah, the two women doing well to avoid each other's attacks, anticipate them, and being sure not to hurt one another while doing so. Especially after the time of Edward going after Embry, no one wanted a repeat of already high tension getting higher. However, throughout all the training that had been happening, the one person of the Pack to not spar with anyone was Jacob. He hadn't once stepped up, instead helping to instruct which of his Pack would be the next one to spar against one of the vampires. Bella knew that he was probably giving everyone a chance and making sure they were well trained, but she also thought that he should be getting in on it, as well.

Turning to look at his large wolf heard, she said softly, "Jake."

Jacob turned his head towards her, large brown eyes staring into her own.

Having his attention, she asked, "Aren't you going to have a turn? I mean, as Alpha, shouldn't you be training your body to prepare for what's to come, too?"

He couldn't answer her verbally, but as he looked away from her and back towards Rosalie and Leah, she could tell he was contemplating her question. She didn't want him to get hurt during the training, but she also didn't want him to be ill-prepared when the time came to fight. Not that she didn't have complete faith in Jacob, because she did, but she just didn't want things to go bad. She also knew that Jacob, while being concerned about not only her, but his Pack and their safety, he couldn't slip up. Nudging him a little, she told him, "You should take a turn. Don't worry, I'll be alright here."

Giving her a nod, he let out a bark, getting everyone's attention. Standing up from his position behind Bella, he walked over to Rosalie and Leah, looking at Leah for a moment before she turned and loped back over to stand next to Seth. Jasper looked at Jacob for a moment before looking at Bella, to which she said, "Jacob wants a turn."

"So, he finally decides to participate," Edward murmured, to which Carlisle shushed him.

Edward had been there the entire time of the training that day, but Bella had ignored his presence. During the training, he had been eyeing Bella, glaring hatefully at Jacob while seeing the two of them openly cuddle together. It made him sick seeing Bella happy with the dog when he knew that her being pregnant with his puppy was due to him taking advantage of her feelings. He needed to make Bella see sense of this, and in doing so, he was sure to convince her to do what was right and he'd get her back.

Ignoring Edward, Jacob looked at Jasper, indicating for him to choose someone to spar with him. Jasper looked at Jacob for a moment, taking in his sheer size as compared to the other wolves before finally looking back at his family. Locking eyes with Emmett, he nodded at him and Emmett smiled. Moving to stand in front of Jacob, Emmett asked with his usual smile, "You ready to get your ass handed to you?"

Jacob let out a wolfish chuckle before he took a couple steps back, giving him some room to move. He got into a defensive position while Emmett got into an offense one, neither of them moving until Jasper said, "Begin."

As the two of them began sparring, Edward took this as the perfect moment to talk to Bella. Moving to where she was seated, he said, "Bella."

Bella stiffened before looking up at him. Feeling a sense of dread settle in her stomach, she asked, "What do you want, Edward?"

"I just want to talk," he answered, taking a seat next to her on the ground.

"I don't want to talk to you. I have nothing to say to you, so leave me alone."

Edward looked at her for a moment before reaching over to take a strand of her hair between his fingers, frowning as she flinched away from him. He continued to watch her as she watched Black before saying, "Bella, I would like to apologize for my behavior that day when you wanted to end out relationship. I shouldn't have outed your pregnancy that way; it wasn't right of me. I hope you can forgive me for it."

Scowling at the memory, Bella finally turned to look at him before saying, "Apology not accepted. You had no right to do that to me. Why couldn't you have just let me break up with you in peace?"

"I'm sorry Bella, I really am. I didn't mean to cause you distress."

"Bullshit. You just wanted to stick it to me for dumping you. Lucky for me, I have friends and family that support me and this pregnancy. And you need to let go of the idea of us getting back together that I know you're still holding onto."

The vampire stared at the brunette for a moment before saying, "Bella, you do know that this pregnancy wouldn't have happened had Black not taken advantage of you and your emotions while I was away, right? What happened was a mistake on his part."

Bella glared at him in anger, her nostrils flaring as she said, "He did not take advantage of me and my feelings. I was the one to initiate sex between us. I acted on a feeling of love for him that I tried to wipe away because I let you back into my life. That was the only mistake made, and it was on my part. Thank God my eyes have finally opened to the ridiculousness that was you and the pain I put everyone around me in because of you. And before you even suggest it, no, I am not getting rid of this baby. I want this baby with Jacob, and we're going to raise him with love and compassion and everything else we need to do to be good parents to him."

"'Him'?" Edward asked with narrowed eyes.

"Yes, 'him'. I believe this baby will be a boy and that Jacob and I are going to have a son."

"You still can't possibly be thinking of keeping the pup. Bella, remember your promise to the Volturi. You promised to be changed, and that will happen after graduation. You can't rescind on it now. You promised me that we'd be together forever. Is that another promise that you plan on breaking? You are mine, Bella Swan. You belong to me, and I'll make sure you do."

The brunette glared harder at him. "The hell I can't rescind on that promise, and like hell I belong to you. I'm not property, and how dare you think of me as such. This isn't the 1920s anymore Edward; grow the fuck up. If you came over here just to bother me about all of this, then you can go back over there. In fact, just get away from me. Nothing you say to me means anything anymore, and I want you to leave me the hell alone!"

Bella's shout had caught Jacob's attention, making him look over at her, but not before ducking a swift kick from Emmett. Seeing Edward next to Bella, he glared at bounded over towards them, Edward quickly getting up and creating space between them while Jacob moved in front of Bella, growling at Edward. Carlisle quickly rushed over to where they were, grabbing Edward and pulling him away from the couple. He continued to growl at Edward as Carlisle said, "Edward, now is not the time."

"Then when is going to be the time, Carlisle?" Edward asked him. "You didn't talk to her like you were supposed to, and now we're just going to pretend like her promise means nothing? The Volturi will have our heads if she doesn't fulfill her promise, and they won't care if she's pregnant."

A shudder ran through Bella at Edward's words and she grabbed onto Jacob's fur in hopes to comfort herself.

"And I told you exactly why I didn't talk to her. Whether you accept the current situation or not is your prerogative, but we're not going to allow that problem to intervene with the current one at hand."

"Yeah, I refuse to let you stress Bella out anymore than she already might be," Rosalie interjected, glaring pure hatred at Edward. "It's not good for the baby."

"The baby," Edward spat in disgust. "It isn't a baby! It's something vile that was created and needs to be gotten rid of!"

The Pack all growled, snarled, and snapped in response to the mind reader's words, Esme's voice saying quite horrified, "Edward!"

"Dude, you need to chill out right now," Emmett said, a disapproving frown on his usually jovial face. "Carlisle is right, we need to focus on the newborn problem right now. Everything else can be dealt with later."

"Shut up, Emmett. I'm sick of everyone just ignoring that Bella is breaking her promise to the Volturi and to me and acting like everything will be okay."

Alice shook her head. "No on is doing that, Edward. We just need to work on being a united front against Victoria right now, and we can't allow for-"

Edward ignored his sister and turned to Bella and Jacob before saying, "That abomination growing inside of her, and I won't allow for it to be. The entire Quileute Pack can die trying to protect it for all I care, but I won't allow Bella to die for it, too. Bella, one way or another, you will be mine again and that thing inside of you will cease to exist. Mark my words."

Bella, not believing what he had said and with angry tears in her eyes, glared at her ex and simply said, "Fuck you, Edward."

Jacob's ear twitched at hearing Bella sniff and he could smell the salt in the air from her tears. Feeling more than angry and having had enough of this, he instantly phased back to his human form and looked at Carlisle. With a seriousness that had never been present before in his voice, Jacob said, "This temporary alliance is now over. I will not stand for your uncontrollable son to threaten not only me and my Pack, but also my unborn child. You can deal with the redhead and her army on your own; we won't be a part of this fight."

"Jake-" Bella started in surprise, but he continued talking.

"And like I said before, once you've dealt with the problem that you caused, you and your family will leave Forks and never, ever, return. And if you don't, there will be dire consequences, and I mean that. Do I make myself clear?"

Silence flowed after Jacob's words, and something in the air shifted. The Pack knew what it was, Carlisle knew what it was, and Bella had a feeling as to what it was. What everyone was suddenly feeling, it was the Alpha's silent rage, a rage that wasn't being portrayed but could clearly be felt. Carlisle, knowing that the safety and security of his family had now been put in danger, nodded and said gravely, "I understand. And I'm sorry for Edward's behavior."

"Instead of just saying you're sorry, why don't you do something about it? Or do you have no control over your own coven. To be such a respected leader, all I see is a nervous weakling that lets his family walk all over and override what he thinks because he doesn't want to step on any toes. Well, look where your negligence has gotten you. And not just you, but all of us. I hope you're happy with yourself."

Saying no more, Jacob phased back into his wolf form and crouched down, indicating for Bella to climb on his back. Bella did so, looking over at Rosalie with an upset expression on her face. Even the blonde vampire seemed distressed by the situation, though her eyes were blazing in anger from the turn of events. Jacob let out a commanding bark, and Bella had to hold tightly to Jacob as he and the Pack took off into the woods back to the Reservation. As they went, Bella couldn't keep her tears from falling.

All of their hard work, the alliance to keep the peace for the sake of getting rid of the newborn army and Victoria, was destroyed in an instance thanks to Edward. Bella knew that the Cullens wouldn't be able to take on all of those newborns on their own; they would all die. They needed the Pack's help, but Jacob's mind was made up. And as they crossed over onto the Quileute lands, Bella wondered if there was anything to be done to fix it, if only for the sake of the fight. But she had a feeling that Jacob wouldn't be easy to convince otherwise.
