"Those men of yours are expendable Lieutenant."
"Yes, sir, I accept that. But they aren't disposable. And that's how they are being treated by you, and almost everyone else in this outfit."
The major made a dismissive gesture with his hand and started to turn away. "It's the same thing," he insisted.
"No, sir. You're wrong." The way his superior turned on his heel and glared at him Garrison knew he hadn't made any points with him. He decided he didn't care and forged ahead.
"Disposable is something you expect to discard, sir. You don't have to care about it at all because you know you're going to toss it aside, probably pretty fast." He leveled his gaze on the other man. "Expendable is something you may have to 'spend', sir, but at least you do it after some thought because you know it has some value. And if you treat it right that value could increase and it just might last. That's all I'm asking for these men… That at least you think first before you send them out on some half-baked lost cause."
