Jane and Neville were in the library, studying when Jane heard a creepy voice. The only word she could make out was murder. She started to put her earplugs in and then realized that the voice was gone. "Neville, what was that," she asked?"
"What was what?"
"That creepy voice."
"I don't know. I didn't hear it. What did it say?"
"The only word I could make out was murder."
"Oh. Maybe someone's just pulling a prank on someone, probably from a ways away. Just because I couldn't hear it doesn't mean you're crazy. You seem to have better hearing than most. Would you feel any better if we went outside and swung for a little while?"
Jane nodded.
During the Halloween feast, Jane heard the voice again. She stood up, picked up her plate, and noticed that the other Hufflepuffs were staring at her. "No offense. Halloween just makes me nervous."
She went and sat next to Neville at the Gryffindor table.
"Is something the matter, Jane?" Neville asked.
"The voice," Jane whispered.
After the feast, they saw the words on the wall.
"The chamber of secrets has been opened. Enemies of the heir … beware."
Jane had no idea what it meant, but she knew it was bad.
"My cat," Mr. Flitch shouted!
Jane was confused. She looked around until her eyes spotted Mrs. Norris. She looked dead.
Jane whimpered and trembled.
Neville touched Jane's hand, and Jane clenched it tightly.
Jane sat down and waited for class to start. Nearby, she overheard Colin talking to Ginny.
"Um… Ginny, are you alright," he asked.
Jane glanced at Ginny and noticed that she looked horrified.
"I'm just upset about what happened last night," Ginny said.
"I am too. I think everybody is, although most people don't have a sibling who was found at the scene of the crime. Hopefully, he won't get in too much trouble for that, or better yet none at all. He was probably just in the wrong place at the wrong time."
Neville approached Jane, shortly after dinner. "Could I talk to you alone," he asked?
"Sure, where," she asked?
"Follow me," he said. He led her into an empty classroom and closed the door. "Did you tell anybody else about the voices you heard?"
"No."
"Good. Apparently, there's a legend that Salazar Slytherin decided to leave the school because the other founders all wanted to allow muggle-borns in, but first, he built something called The Chamber of Secrets. The legend states that the chamber contains a monster, which only the heir of Slytherin can control, and once released it will try to rid the school of all muggle-borns."
Jane whimpered, trying not to scream, and then she started to shake.
"I'm sorry. I shouldn't have told you."
Jane sank down to the floor. She sat there, rocking back and forth. Neville got down on the floor with her and waited it out.
Trevor hoped out of Neville's pocket. He looked at Jane, clearly concerned.
