Jane, Neville, Hermione, and Luna got off the train and started walking to the carriages, in the snow. They had just gotten back to school, after Christmas break.

Jane quietly sang to herself. "The more it snows, the more it goes. The more it goes, on snowing, and nobody knows, how cold my toes, how cold my toes are growing."

"That's cute," Luna said.

Jane froze. embarrassed. She thought she had sung that in her head. Had she sung it out loud? She must have.

Luna started singing, kind of loudly. "The more it snows, the more it goes. The more it goes, on snowing."

Jane joined in.

Jane and Luna sang together. "And nobody knows, how cold my toes, how cold my toes are growing."

Neither of them noticed the stares they got from other people or Hermione's embarrassment. Luna was somehow never embarrassed. Sometimes, that rubbed off on Jane, and that certainly wasn't a bad thing.

They got into the carriage.

"I've never heard that song before," Luna said. "What is it?"

"It's from a Winnie-the-Pooh story," Jane said, "which I was reading to my little sister last night."

"I don't know what Winnie-the-Pooh is."

"Winnie-the-Pooh is a book of fictional stories about a boy and his animal friends, who live in the woods. It's written by a muggle, so you might not have heard of it."

"Are you a muggle-born," Luna asked, "or a half-blood?"

"I don't know," Jane said. "My father was a muggle, and my mother is a squib."

"The whole blood-status thing doesn't make any sense," said Hermione. "There's a lot of people who don't have a blood status. For example, Harry Potter was the son of a pureblood, and a muggle-born witch, so he's not a half-blood or a pureblood, or anything."

"Yeah," Neville agreed. "Being a pure-blood, I probably shouldn't think this, but the whole blood statues thing is just ridiculous."

"Yeah, maybe it is," said Luna. "I just remembered I brought some treats for the thestrals. I guess I'll have to give them to them when the carriage stops. Would anyone else like to give them one?"

"Sure," Jane said, holding out her hand. "Thanks."

"Thanks, Luna," Neville said.

Luna handed one to Jane, and one to Neville. She looked at Hermione.

"No thank you," Hermione said. "I can't see them anyway."

"You can't," Neville said, surprised.

"No. I thought the carriages pulled themselves until the beginning of this year. Percy said they can only be seen by those who've seen death."

"That's creepy," Jane said.

"Well, it's not their fault," Luna said.

"True," Jane said. "It's just, if my dad hadn't died, I wouldn't be able to see them, and I don't like that."

"That's just the way it is," Luna said. "I wouldn't be able to see them if my mom hadn't died."

"Oh. Sorry about your mom," Jane said.

"Sorry about your dad," Luna said.

The carriage stopped, and they got out. Jane, Luna, and Neville went and fed treats to the thestrals.
