Jane and Luna liked Professor Grubbly-Plank, but they wondered what happened to Hagrid. Later that day, Hermione showed them Rita Skeeter's next article.
Jane didn't say anything, but she actually agreed with Rita Skeeter that Hagrid should not be breeding dangerous creatures and that he probably was underqualified for his teaching position. She liked Hagrid, but she did wish that he were a better teacher.
"Why is it a problem that he's part giant?" Jane asked.
"Because a lot of people don't think much of giants," Neville said.
"It's just more discrimination," Hermione said.
Jane, Neville, Hermione, and Luna went to visit Hagrid, but he wouldn't answer the door.
"Hagrid," Hermione shouted, pounding on the door. "We know you're in there. Nobody cares if your mum was a giantess, Hagrid!"
"I'm a Parselmouth, and I don't care who knows it!" Jane yelled.
Hagrid answered the door. "Since when is Jane a Parselmouth?"
"Since always," Jane said, in parseltongue.
Hagrid stared, wide-eyed.
"Well," Hermione said, "we found out at the same time we found out that Harry could talk to snakes."
Hagrid looked shocked.
Hagrid went back to teaching.
Rita Skeeter's next article did not mention Jane speaking parseltongue, but it was unclear if that meant that she did not somehow find out everything, or if that just meant that she was afraid of Mrs. Longbottom.
Hermione watched as Cedric pulled Cho to the surface. She glanced at Luna, next to her, with envy. Hermione was horrified, but here was Luna who never seemed to get scared or worried at all.
Percy came over and stood next to Hermione, and suddenly Hermione felt a little less scared. She knew that he was supposed to be over with the other judges, but she did not say anything.
Some of the merpeople tossed Fleur onto the shore. She was covered in cuts and tied up with seaweed.
Ludo Bagman approached her. "Disqualified," he said, pointing his wand at her and breaking the seaweed.
"No," she exclaimed. "My sister."
"She'll be fine. She's not really in danger. We just said that to make it more exciting."
Viktor and his hostage soon came back, but Neville wasn't back yet.
Neville soon emerged, from the water, with both Jane a little girl who must be Fleur's sister.
When Neville got pulled back under, Jane dived back under the water, while Fleur's sister dog-paddled to stay afloat.
Trevor jumped out of Luna's hands, and into the water, at the same time as Fleur jumped back into the water.
Cedric soon jumped into the water. While Fleur was getting her sister and helping her back to shore, Cedric swam to where Neville and Jane went under and dived below the surface.
Once Fleur got her sister to shore, she jumped back into the water and started swimming back. Viktor soon joined her.
Neville, Cedric, and Jane emerged from the water, and Fleur and Viktor turned around. They all swam back to the docks.
Hermione and Luna started walking toward them, as Percy went back with the other judges.
Cedric looked at Fleur and Viktor. "We're you guys coming to help us?" he asked.
They nodded.
Neville looked around. "Thanks, everyone," he said.
Trevor jumped up onto the docks.
"I'm sorry I let Trevor get away from me," Luna said.
"What's important is that we're all okay," Neville said. He looked toward Jane and offered her his hand.
Jane, who was silently rocking back and forth, took Neville's hands, as they announced the placings.
