Chapter 3
As Aragorn galloped through the darkness his ears caught the sound of hooves behind them. He stopped as the others did, dismounted, and stood by Théoden as one of the Riders challenged their mysterious followers.
"Halt! Halt!" he shouted. "Who rides in Rohan?"
"Rohan? We seek that land in haste." A deep, resonous, familiar voice reached Aragorn's ears.
"Who are you?"
"Halbarad Dúnadan, Ranger of the North. We seek Aragorn son of Arathorn."
"And you have found him!" Aragorn cried as he ran forward and embraced his kinsman. He pulled back, with his hands on Halbarad's shoulders. "Of all joys this is the least expected."
Halbarad and the thirty Rangers with him were given leave to ride with Théoden, and Aragorn rode beside Elladan and Elrohir – who had also come – for the remainder of the journey.
