"I have some presents I'm supposed to give you," Sirius said. "Dumbledore left them here a while ago." He placed three gifts on the table.
The biggest gift was addressed to Neville, from the Sorting Hat. There was a short note attached to it. He read that first.
I know this can be used to destroy Horcrux's, because I destroyed the first Horcrux with it, shortly after killing the basilisk years ago.
Sincerely,
Professor Dumbledore
P.S. The sorting hat would only give this to a true Gryffindor.
Neville opened it and gasped. It was Godric Gryffindor's sword.
Hermione opened her's next. It was addressed to her, from Harry. It did not come with a letter. "It's Harry's invisibility cloak," she exclaimed.
Jane was nervous about hers. To was addressed to her, from Salazar Slytherin. It had a letter attached, so she opened that first.
This was in Marvalo Gaunt's ring, which I destroyed.
Sincerely, Professor Dumbledore
Jane nervously opened it. "It's a stone," she said, wondering what it was for.
Kreacher approached. "Are you a descendent of Salazar Slytherin?" he asked.
Jane nodded.
Kreacher walked off.
Sirius glared at Kreacher and then turned back to everyone else. "He also told me to tell you the story of the deathly hallows, so gather around and I shall tell you a tale. Are any of you familiar with it?"
"I am, but I don't remember it all that well. I remember three people each get to ask for a special gift, but the gifts all end up bringing grave misfortune, except for the invisibility cloak." He looked at Hermione.
Jane also looked at Hermione.
"It's not the invisibility cloak from the story," Mrs. Longbottom said. "It's a fictional story. Actual invisibility cloaks don't make you completely invisible."
"This one did," Sirius said.
Hermione nodded.
"So, does anyone know the whole story?" Jane asked.
"Right," Sirius said. "Once upon a time three brothers were traveling together. They reached a deep and treacherous river, so they pulled out their wands and conjured up a bridge.
"When they were halfway across the bride, they were met with Death. He congratulated them on avoiding dying by making the bridge and offered to award them with gifts of their choosing.
"The first brother asked for a wand more powerful them any in existence, so Death made him the Elder Wand. The second brother asked for the power to bridge back the dead, so Death made him the Resurrection Stone. The third brother asked for something that would hide him from Death, so Death reluctantly gave him his own invisibility cloak.
"The three brothers later went their separate ways. The first brother went to the village where his enemy lived, and he killed his enemy in a dual. He then went to an inn to spend the night and boasted about his powerful wand. Later, while he was sleeping, one of the other guests snuck into his room, slit his throat, and took his wand. Now, Death was able to take the first brother.
"The second brother, who lived alone, returned to his home. He used the stone to bring back his late fiancée. She came, but she was never truly there. She was separated from him, as if by a veil. This upset him so much that he hung himself so he could join her, giving himself to death.
"Death could not find the third brother for many years, When the third brother was very old, he took off the cloak, gave it to his son, and greeted Death as an old friend."
Hermione looked down at her cloak. "Is this death's invisibility cloak?"
"Probably," said Sirius.
"I thought it was a fictional story," said Neville.
"Some people think it is. Some people, including me, think it's not," Sirius replied.
Jane held up the stone. "Is this the Ressurection Stone?"
"Probably," Sirius replied.
"I don't want it. I'll be tempted to use it."
Kreacher suddenly appeared and held a very familiar-looking locket in front of Jane. "Regulus took this from Voldemort, years ago. Since it used to belong to Salazar Slytherin, you should probably have it."
"Thank you Kreacher!" she exclaimed. "I think that's a Horcrux."
She examined it and tried to open it. It wouldn't budge. "Open," she said, in parseltongue. The locket opened, and some really overwhelming energy burst out of it. She quickly closed it.
"I probably shouldn't use the sword in the house," Neville said. "Let's go outside."
Jane and Neville went outside.
Neville stood in front of the locket, which Jane had placed on the ground, holding the sword over it.
Jane stood back and put her earplugs in. "Open," she said, in parseltongue. The locket opened, and Jane realized that the earplugs did nothing for this.
Huge versions of Neville's parents stood in front of them. A voice, which nothing could block out, spoke. "You'll never live up to your parents."
Now a huge version of Neville's grandmother, wearing a stern look on her face, stood in front of them. "You'll never meet your grandmother's expectations."
Neville jammed the sword into the locket. The energy, the huge images of people, and the voice went away.
Later, they tried to destroy the Ressurection Stone the same way, but it didn't work. It seemed to be indestructible.
A package arrived, from Luna. In it was what appeared to be an old broken crown, and a letter.
Dear Jane, Neville, and Hermione
I wondered if Rowena Ravenclaw's lost diadem could be a Horcrux. Shortly before the end of the school year, I asked Professor Trelawney if she had any way to figure out where the lost diadem could be. She told me that she already knew where it was. She'd seen it in the room of requirement when she asked for a place to stash something, but she warned me that it seemed to have been possessed by dark magic.
Anyway, I found it, and I took it home. My father agreed that it was probably a Horcrux, and then we destroyed it.
Love,
Luna
They cheered when they read the letter.
Jane's owl results came by owl post. She was not sure if it mattered what she got on her owls, because she was not sure if she would be going back to Hogwarts. Yet, there was still a chance that she would go back to Hogwarts, and even if she did not it would still be nice to know what she got. She had studied hard for her exams, and she wanted to know what she got.
She opened it, and was pleased with what she saw. She got eight out of nine owls. She got an acceptable in Transfiguration, Defence Against the Dark Arts, History of Magic, and Astronomy. She got an exceeds expectations in both Care of Magical Creatures, and Herbology, and she even got an Outstanding in both Charms and Muggle Studies.
