Jane was swinging, in the backyard, when she heard what sounded like someone approaching the front of the house and the door opening and closing.

Jane ran inside, while the alarm was going off.

"Help!" Jane yelled, rushing to the front door, and pulling out her wand, as everybody else ran downstairs with their wands.

"Hold your fire, it's me, Remus!" the intruder said, as the cloud of smoke disappeared.

"Show yourself!" Sirius said, as Jane started to lower her wand and then raised it again.

Professor Lupin came into the light, with his hands up.

"I am Remus John Lupin, werewolf, sometimes known as Mooney, one of the four creators of the marauder's map, married to Nymphadora, usually known as Tonks. The wand that's closest to me used to belong to Alice Longbottom."

Everyone except Sirius and Hermione lowered their wands. Jane allowed herself to rock back and forth, and Neville went up to her and took her hand.

"Is it true about Jane's wand?" Hermione whispered.

Augusta nodded, and then Hermione and Sirius put their wands down.

"What's going on?" Sirius asked.

"Well, first I wanted to make sure you were all okay."

"We are," Augusta said.

"Good. All Percy could tell me was that Hermione made it home safely."

"What happened after the wedding?" Hermione asked.

"Well, Kingsly saved us. Thanks to his warning, most of the wedding guests were able to Disapparate before they arrived."

"Were they death eaters, or ministry people?" Hermione asked.

"A mixture, but to all intents and purposes, they're the same thing now. There were about a dozen of them. They were looking for you, Hermione, and Luna."

Hermione paused. "Did Luna make it out okay?"

"Yes."

"Why would they want Hermione, or Luna?" Neville asked.

"I think a lot of people know they're your friends, and some people know that Hermione is Percy and Ron's friend.

"They said that they wanted Hermione because she was a muggle-born, but they don't seem to be doing this for every other muggle-born. They searched the Burrow from top to bottom and told Percy he was fired.

"They went to the Lovegoods afterward and asked them if they knew where Hermione, Neville, or Jane were, but they didn't give a reason for going after Neville or Jane. They took Luna and Xenophilius into the ministry and made them take truth serum. Fortunately, they let them go afterward. Some people can resist the effect of truth serum, but most people don't think too much of the Lovegoods so I guess they didn't think they could."

Fortunately, since owl post didn't require an address, Luna had not been given any indication of where they would be.

"What does being a muggle-born have to do with anything?" Hermione asked.

Professor Lupin handed her a Daily Prophet, and she looked at it with distaste.

Apparently, it had been proven that magic could only be passed from person to person, so someone with no magical ancestry must have obtained their magic by force or theft. Muggle-born now had to go in front of the ministry, and prove they didn't steal magic and were being sent to Azkaban if they couldn't.

"This is ridiculous," Sirius said. "No one can steal magic, especially not an eleven-year-old."

"Nevertheless, that's how it is now."

"Jane's family members are squibs and muggles. Are squibs good enough?"

"I don't know."

Neville looked at Jane and Hermione. "If anyone asks, you two are my cousins," Neville said.

"It'd be more believable if only one of them was your cousin. One of them could be my illegitimate daughter, who was put up for adoption after I went to Azkaban."

"Who would her mother be?" Mrs. Longbottom asked.

"Does it matter?" Hermione asked. "I don't think they'll find us here anyway. Even if we leave, we'll be on the run."

They were all prepared to take off at any moment, but so far they hadn't had to.

Professor Lupin looked at Neville. "The order is under the impression that Dumbledore left you a mission."

"He did," Neville said.

"I could come with you. You could always need more help, right?"

"But, what about Tonks?" Hermione asked.

"What about her?"

"You're married! How does she feel about you going away with us?"

"She'll be perfectly safe. She'll be at her parent's house."

"What's going on?"

"Tonks is going to have a baby."

"What?" Sirius exclaimed. You certainly can't leave your wife when she's pregnant."

"She'll be perfectly safe there. They'll look after her."

"Would she be? Her father is a muggle-born."

"I've made a mistake marrying Tonks. I've made her an outcast, and the child will probably be a werewolf, like me. If by some miracle the child isn't, they'd be better off without a father of whom they'd be ashamed."

"Don't say that," Hermione said. "How could any child be ashamed of you?"

"I'd be pretty ashamed of him," Sirius said, "but not because he's a werewolf." He raised his voice. "You want to abandon your kid and go on an adventure with us."

"This is not a desire for danger or personal glory," Professor Lupin replied.

"James died trying to protect his wife and child."

"And now they're both dead."

Sirius raised his voice even further. "Go back to your wife and child, now, you bloody coward!"

Professor Lupin turned and left, slamming the door closed.
