When Selene had chosen Michael when he came to the coven, Varga had let go of any romantic feelings he had for her. Seeing them together made it easier for him to let go as Michael and Selene were meant to be together. It might have taken Michael and Selene some time to realize, but the coven already knew the minute she beat up David over him.
Over the last few years, Varga was happy with his role and the freedom it provided. He was roaming around the hallways, wondering when the royal couple would be back. He smiled at his own thoughts. Selene hated that name, which only meant he used it at every opportunity possible.
Varga didn't worry Selene and Michael weren't back according to schedule. Selene was more than capable of protecting her family if Michael would let her fight. The only way Selene knew how to blow off some steam from all the council meetings was to get her adrenalin pumping. Michael was opposed of course, until she dared him to a fight. They went at it for a few hours, while the whole coven watched. Varga barely dared to enter the arena to stop them. Both had growled at him, until they saw the amount of people watching them. After that, once in a while they would close off the arena for a few hours and go at each other.
He walked downstairs to security. Their head of security greeted him and pointed to a chair.
'Anything exciting happening?' Varga asked, knowing the answer.
'Nothing much, unless you count the few squirrels crossing the road. They haven't arrived yet.' Danny answered his unasked question.
'Did you see that fight between Jake and Nathan?'
'Yeah. Pissed off is an understatement.' Danny said. 'It's a good thing David intervened, they'd probably have killed each other.'
'Would have been better if he were caught in the crossfire.' Varga smirked.
Danny laughed. The whole coven knew about the unspoken feud between him and David. Danny and Varga chatted for a bit when they both saw something nearing the outer gate. A car was speeding towards the coven at high speed.
'The outer gates are opening, must be someone from the coven. Whose car is that?' Varga asked.
'Not sure, the car is going too fast to be recognized by the cameras. But seriously, they are going to crash through the gates!' Danny got back to work and signaled the guard at the inner gate.
Varga focused on the camera. The car was black with tinted windows, which narrowed it down to the whole coven. The car barely missed the outer gate. What's their hurry anyway?
He switched the view to the inner gates and recognized the license plate. 'Wait, that's Selene's car! Let them go through.'
Varga left the office and he heard Danny signal the guard to back off. He hurried to the front door when Michael already called for him. Jeez, what's the rush! He opened the door but made sure he kept in the shadow.
He watchedMichael walk around the car and open the back door. Oh, Selene must really hate him now. Varga smirked. But his grin vanished immediately. Michael was carrying Selene in a blanket, she didn't seem to be moving.
'What the hell?!' Was the only thing Varga could manage to exclaim.
'Take her to our chambers, I will meet you there.' Michael gently handed Selene to him and turned to Eve. 'Go with Varga, I will get supplies from the infirmary and meet you there.'
Varga went inside with Eve following him. He didn't dare ask her what had happened.
They moved through the castle on automatic pilot. Varga looked at Selene's face. She was beyond pale and looked younger in her unconscious state. Eve opened the door for him to her parents' chambers and let him inside. Varga went straight for the bedroom and placed her on the bed.
Eve rushed over and he took a step back. As Eve removed the blanket from her mother, Varga saw the bandages. Most of them were drenched in blood. He clenched his fists in order to keep his anger under control.
How the hell did this happen? Varga promised himself the person responsible wouldn't see the light of day when he crossed with them. Varga was plotting revenge when Michael rushed in. It looked like he had stripped the infirmary clean of all the supplies available. Varga made sure he wasn't in the way and kept as still as possible, hoping he wouldn't be dismissed.
