Henry

"Mommy?"

"Yes, Henry?"

"If Aunt Callie is my aunt, does that make Sofia my cousin?"

"Technically, no. Your Aunt Callie isn't actually your aunt. She's my best friend so we're close like sisters."

"Okay, good," I say as I throw on my suit jacket. "I'm really excited today."

"It's your last day of second grade," she paused. "It's should be exciting. Go grab breakfast while I get the twins and Everett ready for daycare."

"Okay," I say happily as I make my way out of my room.

The entire house smells like muffins and has been for a few days now since Mommy's friend came to stay with us. She says that her friend is in town for a few weeks and was tired of paying hotel bills. It's okay, though. She's really funny and nice; and she makes the best desserts. She plays dress up with the twins and she's been teaching Everett French but all he knows how to say is 'oui, oui' which sounds really funny when you don't know that he's trying to speak French.

"Good morning, Miss Izzie," I say as I climb up the stool at the kitchen island. "Your muffins smell delicious."

"Good morning," she says as she puts a plate down in front of me, "and thank you, Henry. I made apple cinnamon muffins today."

"Hmmm," I say taking a huge bite into my muffin. "May I have like three more of these?"

"You've got a big appetite today, huh, buddy?"

"Honestly, I'm getting some for my friends. Sofia loves all of the muffins I've been bringing to her this week… and now, Zola is jealous. So I'm bringing her one too… and an extra one for myself."

"No problem, Henry," she laughs. "I have too many muffins anyway… I bake when I'm nervous."

"Why are you nervous? Am I making you nervous?"

"No," she smiled softly but it didn't reach her eyes. "I have to tell someone very important to me some really bad news and I'm nervous about how they will respond to it."

"Well, if they're as important as you say they are, it shouldn't matter how bad the news is. They'll always be there for you and love you," I explain.

She smiles harder this time, "You're such a wise young man. You're, what, like 60?"

"No! I'm just 6!" I smile as I hear my mommy coming down the stairs with Everett and his baby bag on her hip with the twins on her tail.

She notices all of the muffins on the counter and looks at the blonde with a worried look on her face, "Today's the day, huh?"

"Yeah… it's probably the only day where he can't run from me because we'll be in surgery together which, thank you again for letting me take over."

"It's nothing. Good luck," she says as she walks over to us and grabs the lunches for the twins. "No but really, I hope it all works out for you. I really do."

"Thanks, Addison"

"Okay, baby boy. Are you ready for your last day of second grade?"

"I've been ready since the first day of second grade," Sofia exaggerates as we all sit down at the table in our classroom.

Mrs. Ruth walks into the room seconds later and starts by calling the roll. Max runs in right before his name is called, taking his seat at our table and Zola tells him how perfect his timing was. Max's mom is sick so he's been in and out of school all year. He wasn't here yesterday and we didn't expect him to be here today but no one really wants to miss the End-of-the-Year celebration we're having during our special block right after math.

We start on our morning work as soon as she finished roll call. I pull out the muffins that I brought for me and the girls but I didn't grab an extra one for Max. I didn't think he'd be here so I gave him mine instead. I have plenty more where that came from.

"My mommy's friend is staying with us for a little bit," I explain to Max. "And she bakes the best desserts. These are apple cinnamon."

The announcements come on a moment after and right after, we go over our work. We had to write a paragraph about this past year. She wants to know what our favorite part of second grade was and what we had the most fun learning. My favorite part of this year was making new friends. When we moved to Seattle last year, I didn't know many people and was kind of scared… I really missed my daddy and not knowing anyone made me kind of lonely but now I'm surrounded by people I love. Learning to make robots was the most fun to me and at the end of the day, we get to take them home! I'm so excited to see Bailey's reaction to it when I see him again… It's been a long time since I've been over to their house. I only get to see Zola at school but I assume it's because Momma's been busy. Most surgeons are…

We don't really do much in any of our classes. We talked about all we learned that year and what we expect third grade to be like. This happened in all of our classes but recess. They let us have free play to do what we want. I played with the boys today while Zola and Sofia practiced their performance for the end-of-the-year celebration at the end of the day. During our reading block, we talk about our plans for over the summer and I realize that we don't have any special plans just yet. I wonder what my mommy has planned for us this summer. Last summer, we went to Denmark to this amazing amusement park called Tivoli Gardens. It was so cool but I didn't get to bring any of my friends with me so maybe this year they can come along.

Our math block came and went very fast and it was time for the celebration. We all lined up at the door and Sofia walked up behind me sliding her hand into mine. She smiles at me and says quietly, "I have a secret… Well, technically it's not mine. It's Zola's… but she said I could tell you."

"What is it?"

"She's going to break up with Jasper during the celebration," she whispered into my ear.

"Oh no," I say quietly. "I have a secret too. Well, it's not mine either."

"What did Jasper tell you?"

"He bought Zola a Ring Pop."

"Oh, no."

"He's going to ask her to go to the park after dismissal to wait for their parents together."

"She's going to break his heart."

"She is, indeed. I hope third grade won't be this complicated."

"Well, it will be easier for us because we have each other," she says and it makes me smile.

We walk into the celebration and the first thing we see is Jasper walking up to us with a huge smile on his face. I feel like I should warn him. I let go of Sofia's hand and I walk Jasper to the corner.

"I have bad news, friend."

"What's up?"

"Don't give Zola the Ring Pop."

"Why?"

"Well, she doesn't like like you anymore…"

"Oh, good. I like Marie now and I was going to tell Zola when I gave her this Ring Pop."

"Oh, good," I nod confused as he runs off towards Zola.

Sofia walks up to me, "It looks like he took it well."

"Love is weird," I say with a shrug. "Wanna dance?"

"I'd love to!" she squealed as she pulled me onto the Alphabet map that they deemed the dance floor.

Max came running into the room late with three flowers from our garden outside, "Where's Zola?"

"Over there," we point and he walked up to her handing her the flowers. They hug as she tucks the flowers in her hair then the two of them come over to where we are on the mats.

Zola pulls Sofia away and Max smiles over at me. I ask, "You gave Zola flowers?"

"I've been wanting to all year. Zola's the smartest and prettiest girl in school," he shrugged. "I didn't know how to tell her that I had a crush so the flowers were my mom's idea."

"Your mom is so cool," I thought to myself. I still haven't told my mom that Sofia is my girlfriend now. "I should bring Sofia flowers."

"Want to go pick some?"

"Yeah," I nod as we race out into the field.

Sofia's favorite color is blue so I look for blue flowers as Max helps me search. I look over to him, "How is your mom? I know she's sick."

"My daddy says that she's going to be okay… but sometimes I overhear the doctors talking…" he trailed off. "What they say doesn't sound too good."

"My mommies are doctors. Maybe they can help?" I offer. "They work at Grey-Sloan Memorial Hospital."

"I'll ask my daddy if we can go there for your moms' help."

"They're both the best at their jobs. One of them should be able to help for sure," I nod. "I have a bunch of aunts and uncles too that can help. They're all at Grey-Sloan. You have to get your mom there. Today. I'll tell my mommy about her when she picks me up."

"You're the best, Henry."

"No, you're the best Max," I say pointing to the ground. "You found blue flowers!"

"I didn't even know," he laughed.

We picked a few flowers and ran back towards the building. Some kids were outside for the celebration playing but Zola and Sofia were still indoors at the snack table. I grab a plastic cup and I fill it up with water, shoving the flowers down inside before handing it to her.

"I couldn't find a vase so soon," I grin. "But my mommy has a bunch at home and I'll bring it to you after school."

"Aww, thank you Henry," she smiled smelling them. "They smell beautiful and they're my favorite color. Blue."

She kisses me quickly on the cheek and it makes me smile hard. I can feel my cheeks warm up and I turn away quickly.

Max steps in, "Henry and I are going to the Monkey Bars if you want us. Come on, dude."

"Okay," I nodded quickly as I follow him out.

Max giggled once we got to the Monkey Bars, "How long have you liked Sofia? Your cheeks got super red, dude."

"I liked Sofia since the moment I met her," I grin and my tummy feels like there's stuff swimming around inside. "She still makes me feel tingly inside. How long will that last?"

"My mommy says that happens when you really like somebody," he explained. "They make you feel all mushy inside. That's what happens to me when I see Zola."

"Are you and Zola going to be boyfriend and girlfriend now?"

"I hope so," he smiled. "She told me that she'll tell me if she wants to after school."

"I hope she says yes," I reply. "I haven't seen you smile that hard all year."

"It's been tough," he shrugged. "I hate that my mommy's sick. It's weird because sometimes the doctors run test on me too and it leaves me really sleepy. I feel like I've slept through the school year!"

"Wow," I say in response. I can't imagine how hard that must be for him. I don't want my mommy to ever get sick. "That sounds scary."

"It is," he nodded. "But my daddy is there to protect me. He's really strong, like a superhero."

"That's cool," I nodded. I used to think my daddy was a superhero too.

Our teacher steps outside and waves us in, "Come on inside, boys and girls! Our special block is over!"

"Oh, yay!" I squeal. "They're giving us our robots today in Science & Social Studies class."

"Oh, yeah! I almost forgot!" he replied as we both took off towards the building.

We fall into the line by the door and we see the girls already in the front. We both waved at them before turning back to each other, "You should come over to my house today. We can play with the robots!"

"I'll ask my daddy when he picks me up," he nodded and clapped his hands in response.

We all make our way quietly back to our classroom and we eventually meet up with Zola and Sofia at our table. Sofia looks over to us as we sit down next to them, "I wonder if we will all be in the same class next year."

"I really hope so."

"Yeah, you guys are my favorite," Max nodded.

Our teacher starts to hand out robots and we go up one-by-one to get them. By the time it's over, there's only fifteen minutes left in our day so our teacher lets us do what we want. I decide that I'm going to get everybody I know to sign my yearbook and write down their favorite memories with me. Just in case we're not all in the same class next year, I'll have something to remember the fun times we had together this year.

Once I get everyone in my class to sign my yearbook, I headed back to my table to get ready for dismissal. Everyone at our table is a car rider so we don't get dismissed until all the bus riders leave. When they call for us, we line up at the door until our teacher says it's okay to go. Everyone is excited because it's the last day before summer break but we're all pretty sad that we won't see each other every day. I promised all of my friends that we would have playdates though… that way they won't have to miss me too much.

When we get outside, my mommy's already waiting for us. I grab her hand and I walk her over to Max and his dad, "Mommy, this is my friend Max. His mom is sick. Do you think you can help him?"

"I, uh," she looks from me to Max and his father, "Hi, I'm Henry's mom. Addison."

"Dexter," he reaches out his hand. "I'm sorry about that. We've been battling my wife's Huntington's this past year…"

"I just happen to be a Medical Geneticist. Maybe Henry and Max really are on to something?"

"Well, our unplanned pregnancy really complicates things."

"I'm actually the Chief of OB/GYN over at Grey-Sloan Memorial Hospital," she explains and digs into her purse for one of her cards. "Here, it's never bad to get a second opinion on these things and I'll be happy to help where I can."

"Thank you," he nodded accepting the card. "I really appreciate it."

"See you later, Max," I smile grabbing her hand and pulling her towards the adults who've gathered around Sofia and Zola. "Auntie Zona!"

"Hi, baby," she said as she reached down to hug me.

I wave and hug my momma too before turning to the both of them, "Can Sofia, Zola and Bailey come over to my house today? I got a new game for my Xbox that we can all play."

"Sure, Henry," my aunt replies. "If it's okay with your mom."

"Of course, Arizona," my mom smiled. "Sofia is always welcomed."

"Momma?" I question her when she doesn't say anything.

She looks over at my mommy weirdly and it makes me feel a little weird. I look at my mommy and she turns away quickly. Something weird is going on here and I don't think I like it.

I turn to my mommy and I ask, "Can they?"

"Yes, of course Henry," she smiled politely.

Momma nodded, "Okay, I, uh, I guess I will see you two later."

"Bye!" I wave as they all head to their seperate cars. "See you later!"

"We have to pick up your brother and sisters from the salon," she said as she tucked her hand into mine. She runs her hands through my curls and jokes, "Whenever you're ready for a haircut, kid. Let me know."

"I'm never cutting my hair," I said with a smile. Daddy liked it when my hair was long so he could practice doing the twins' hair. They are very tender-headed so Daddy would try new styles on me.

We pick up Everett and the twins from the salon and on our way home, Mommy tells us that we're going to New York in a couple of weeks for Betsey's birthday. That means I get to play with Grayson and Olivia! Mommy says she thinks Mason and the triplets will be there too. I really hope so because I miss my friends.

We're only home for about an hour before Sofia gets here. It's warm out so tonight, we're playing up on the front balcony. We're building a fort while we wait for Zola and Bailey then dressing up like we're from the medieval times. I wanted to be the dragon but I know Bailey loves playing that part so I'm going to dress up as the king. Zola and Sofia usually are the princesses and the twins are sometimes princesses and sometimes dragons depending on how they feel. I can't wait for the rest of our friends to get here. I wonder if they'll stay the night since we don't have school anymore.

We just finished building the fort when we hear a car door slam and we all run over to the banister to wave at our friends. I call out, "Hi guys! I'm going to tell my mom to come down to the door!"

"Auntie Addison!" Sofia called out as my mom walked out onto the balcony.

I point down to the ground, "Look, Momma's here!"

"She sure is…" she trails off.

Mommy just stands there staring and for a second, I think she's stuck so I tug on her shirt, "Mommy, are you going to let them in?"
