CH. 18: THE ARMOR LABORATORY
Saturday 9 October Afternoon / Clear
Duplicitous Devils Castle
AION POV
"Hoy, Aion!" Hop yells the name of the alien.
"Finally..." Aion whispered as he approached his comrades, that were coming down from the peak.
Hop and Beet were coming down from the peak, the two, as the only ones still with strength in their bodies helped their other two friends, Hop was dragging Victor down, while Beet carried Gloria on his back.
"I knew you would make it" Aion greeted his friends with a smile, he was happy to see them return safe and sound.
"Glad to see you still kicking it!" Hop counters with a mix of a serious and sarcastic tone.
"Last time we saw each other, it didn't seem like you were doing that well." Hop comment.
"I told you that I would have been fine on my own, didn't I?" Aion said half lying, it was true that he is the one that defeated Doublade with his strength and wits, but he was also saved by the intervention of Klara.
"The important thing is that it is finally over" Hop grinned.
"... I see that you too are back, save and well." Aion commented, looking straight at Beet's face.
"..." Beet said nothing in shame.
"If I'm not wrong, you should have gotten your Pokesoul back, right?" Aion asked the boy.
"... Yes, I did." Beet answered dryly.
"Well... glad to know you're fine... those two on the other hand..." Aion points to both Victor and Gloria, still unconscious from the long battle.
"Oh, you mean our two MVPs? Well, they're all right too, but I'd let them rest a little longer." Hop said.
"I see... well then, since we are all here now, what do we do now?" Aion wondered.
"Surely, if we go down the mountain, we'll find a path or someway that will lead us to the Macro Cosmos Laboratory." Aion continued.
"Well, then what do you expec-"
"Wait a minute Hop, I don't think it's wise to approach the Armor Laboratory now, we don't have the strength to take on other battles." Beet said.
"Sheesh, you're right, venturing there with two exhausted fighters doesn't sound like a good idea..." said Hop.
"In your opinion, is it better if we retire?" Aion asked, staring intently at Beet.
"Exactly." Beet replied without hesitation.
"… Very well, going down the mountain there is a chance that we will run into some Shadows, if that should be the case, please leave them to me." Aion said.
"Having said that, let's go." the group sets out on the way back to the real world.
? POV
...
Unbeknownst to everyone, a dark humanoid figure was staring at our heroes with its crimson red eyes, from a distance.
"..." he watched the group disappear from his sight, and at that point he too vanished into thin air.
NORMAL POV
Locked Doors
"Eugh." you were awakened by the voices of your friends talking to each other.
"Where... where are we?" you immediately try to observe your surrounding environment in an attempt to fill your memory lapse.
"Finally awake, sleepyhead?" Hop said playfully mocking you.
"Hop?! Where the hell are we?" you asked your friend.
"Where else are we supposed to be? We are in the Darkest Den." he said.
"Hop, I didn't mean... sigh... which part of the Darkest Den are we?" you ask him again.
"Oh! We came back to the entrance, both I and Beet dragged you and Gloria's asses from up there till here."
"Right..." you took the time to analyze the situation, Beet, and Hop sat trying to recover their energy, while Gloria was still laying unconscious near you, Aion instead was guarding you, as he was probably the only one still with some energy left in his body.
"Aion, welcome back buddy..."
"...Thanks."
"I knew that you could take that haunted sword on your own." you made a smile of relief.
"And I was confident that you would defeat the big Shadow and bring Beet back." the alien answered you back with a smile as well.
"I am glad to see that we are all fine, more or less, anyway why did you decide to return back to the entrance? What about the laboratory?" you asked your companions.
"We have decided to conclude the search for today, we have sustained too many injuries, and since there could be some Shadows lurking around the laboratory, we thought that it will be better not to risk." Beet said.
"I see... and what are we going to refer to Mr. Pendragon?" you then ask the boy.
"Nothing, we'll just let him know that our research for the laboratory has been postponed due to an unexpected event." Beet answered.
"..."
"Plus... the only one we owe explanations to, his Gloria..." Beet added unexpectedly.
"..." your eyes widened in surprise after hearing that statement.
Despite the amazement, you don't show it and continue with the conversation.
"... then if I'm not mistaken now we are waiting for Gloria to wake up, right?"
"Exactly, after which we would go home, I can't manage these terrible headaches anymore, it is like they are trying to tear my head apart." Beet rubs his forehead.
As expected, Gloria woke up shortly after you and after having clarified the current situation to her as well, you decide to return home, postponing the research of the laboratory to tomorrow or in the following days.
...
Evening/ Cloudy
Later at Central Wyndon Station.
"Are you sure you can go home on your own?" Gloria asked Beet.
"I still have a little strength left, don't worry about me." Beet said.
"I'll tell Mr. Pendragon what happened today, so don't worry."
"Well, see you tomorrow, then." Gloria waved off the boy.
"Until we meet again." after exchanging farewell, Beet took the S-Bus to Northern Wyndon.
Much later.
Back in the dormitory, you get something to eat at the canteen and after that, you say goodbye to your friends and headed toward your room to end the day.
Night/ Cloudy
Poem of Everyone's Soul (Be Your True Mind)
You wake up in the Velvet Room, apparently, you have been called from the real world by Mustard, the elderly entity as always was sitting on the other side of the table that separated you, and as always next to him was his assistant Klara.
"Welcome back to the Velvet Room, dear customer." greeted you, Mustard.
"You have once again managed to stand up against another obstacle in your destiny, and in the meantime, you have also earned another important witness, my most heartfelt congratulations." Mustard compliments you.
"Although beware not to rest on your laurels just yet, your journey has just begun, and as you get closer to your goal your enemies will only increase in power and dangerousness."
"Another warning that I would like to leave you with, is to be careful in the real world as well, until now the consequences of the Darkest Den, have affected only those who have come into contact with it without owning the will to confront it. " Klara warned you.
"Soon this may no longer be the case, the cunning entity you are fighting against is truly a tenacious and powerful one, and he will do anything to condemn humanity, be it by rightly means or unfairly ones."
"Keep your eyes open, and pay attention to your surroundings." Klara finished with a solemn tone.
"With that said, please consider bringing me some new Pokesouls next time you visit us, I'm really in the mood for some Fusion rituals." the mysterious woman jokingly said, softening her vocal timbre.
"Then until the next time we meet again, dear customer, farewell." Mustard bid you farewell.
Your eyelids became heavy, causing you to fall back into your slumber.
Sunday 10 October Morning / Raining
The next day.
Much More Than You Know
After breakfast, you head straight to Winscor together with the others to meet Beet, who was already waiting for you there.
While you were in the S-Bus, Hop started arguing with you and Gloria, regarding one of the events of yesterday, to be precise the defeat of Shadow Mary, your statements were contradicting one another.
"What do you mean, Beet himself was the one to defeat Shadow Mary?" clamored the golden-eyed boy, in shock.
"Why are you surprised? I collapsed to the ground after getting hit by one of the bolts of Shadow Mary, remember?" Gloria said.
"The same goes for me as well, in the end, the final blow to Shadow Mary was given by Beet, I don't quite understand your amazement at all." you told him trying to comprehend the boy's confusion.
"I mean, other than assisting him in the defeat of Shadow Mary, I have done nothing else."
"But... Beet has said otherwise, rather, he told me that the fact that you were the most exhausted was precise because you guys did all the job defeating Shadow Mary and that he had done nothing more other than supporting you." explained Hop.
"WHAT?!" yelled Gloria, attracting some glares and whispers from the other passengers, that embarrassed the lassie, causing her to recollect herself.
"I don't understand, I didn't expect such a thing from him." you comment.
-NEXT STOP WINSCOR, NEXT STOP WINSCOR-
"In any case, we have arrived, why don't you ask the involved person directly?" Aion said as he stood up and headed for the exit, followed by you.
Six minutes later.
"There you are, why did you take so long?" Beet groaned as soon as he saw you approaching.
"There you are, my ass! How come you lied to me yesterday! Deceiver!" Hop called Beet out exaggeratedly.
"... What are you talking about..." Beet tried playing dumb with Hop.
"Come on, don't play dumb with me, man, why didn't you tell me yesterday that it was you who defeated Shadow Mary?"
"Because I didn't defeat her." Beet countered sharply.
"Beet, both Victor and I were laying comatose without strength in our bodies, the only one that was still standing and was still fighting was you..." Gloria told him straightforwardly.
"... Th-the t-truth is that if it wasn't for you... let's say that defeating Shadow Mary… w-would have been more difficult if not impossible." Beet admitted blushing.
"..." your eyes widen in surprise and you started staring at Beet comically, your same reaction was repeated by both Gloria and Hop, only Aion stayed true to his nature and stared at him with a dead serious stare.
"STOP STARING AT ME, DAMMIT!" Beet yells at you.
"Tsk... anyway, what I meant is, that the reason why we won against Shadow Mary was because of you guys..." Beet said, obviously embarrassed, while avoiding your gazes.
"Ohh! I understand." Gloria giggle.
"W-what are you smiling for?" Beet said, putting himself on the defensive, a behavior that did not serve him much since you, Hop, and Gloria began teasing him even harder.
After you cleared up this little "misunderstanding", you head to the Wild Area to reach the Darkest Den.
You in Wonderland
"Here we are." you look around for a moment to analyze the environment.
The weather was clear, and Mount Storm was still visible from the portal.
After about a quarter of an hour of walking, and some short battles with a dozen Shadows, your return to the bottom of the mountain.
Despite the serene climate that stretched throughout the Darkest Den, Mount Storm was still dominated by the lightning that characterizes it.
"Strange, it seems that this place is unaffected by the weather rules of the Darkest Den." Hop comment.
"Do you think this is due to Shadow Mary's influence?" you asked Aion.
"But how will that be even possible? Shadow Mary shouldn't be a problem anymore, right?!" Gloria countered your argument.
"I've been thinking about it for a while, but I think those who have access to the Darkest Den, in this case, us, seem to have a lot more influence than we believe." you start laying your theory to the others.
"First the emanations of Hop, then those of Beet and Gloria, and with the last two we also had the creations of these places."
"Man, now that I think about it..." Hop said.
"Everything you said might make sense." also commented Gloria.
"Interesting theory, but where do you wanna go with this hypothesis?" Beet questioned you.
"I don't know yet… if you guys don't mind, could we go back to the island where it rains?" you requested to your companions.
"Eugh, do we really have to..." Gloria asked, hesitant about the idea of going back to that island.
"Let's first finish our task here first, and then we can think of other things, Victor." Aion told you.
"Sure, anyway... where exactly should we look for this laboratory?" you asked the alien.
"We could start, for example, by checking the sides of the mountain, the last time if you remember, they were inaccessible, now though it seems to be no longer like this." so you begin to explore the sides of the mountain accordingly, looking for the Armor Laboratory or a way toward it.
The search for the laboratory lasts an hour and a half, but after battling countless Shadows, and recruiting a few, you find a narrow path that takes you to a plain near Mount Storm, where you locate a laboratory far away from you.
"There it is!" you say enthusiastically, pointing towards the laboratory in the distance.
"It looks exactly like the one described by the researcher team." Beet said.
"What the hell are we waiting for, come on!" Gloria exclaimed before sprinting towards the laboratory, followed by all of you.
I'm Here
Inside the laboratory.
Unlike the last lab you visited, this one looked neater and less decadent.
"That's incredible, are you sure this place was abandoned?" Aion asked Beet.
Obviously, the machinery devices were long shut due to the lack of electricity, and the various boxes and shelves all seemed in excellent condition.
"Apart from the machinery, this laboratory does not seem completely left behind, yet this place should be since long abandoned..." said Gloria.
"Don't forget you are in the Darkest Den, the real world rules don't quite work here." Aion reminded the girl.
"Right, I always keep forgetting that detail." you say in retrospect.
"Anyway, let's start searching around, and let's hope to find something that can help us." Hop said.
You decide to split into two groups, Hop, Beet, and Gloria would do their research on the west side of the structure, on the other side you and Aion will go to take a look at the east side.
The goal of the research was to find any method to counter the Alienation Disorder that was causing harm to Veronica Tyr.
You start looking through the rooms, but you keep finding only blueprints and documents related to the construction of the laboratory.
Eventually, you find something worth the interest, but there were mainly reports that the Macro Cosmos exchanged with the laboratory or reports between the laboratories.
After half an hour of research in the laboratory rooms, you reach Aion to ask him how his investigation was going.
"Hey, did you find anything?" you asked him.
"No, what about you?" Aion asked you.
"Nothing, damn it." you glimpse at one of the computers in the room.
"Do you think they kept their data in the computers?" you asked Aion.
"The information from the computer was the easiest to download and to be taken away, that's what the chairman told me." Aion answered.
"I see, I wonder how they manage the electricity, do you know anything about it?"
"They used gasoline generators, if I'm not mistaken." Aion quickly replied to your question.
"Obviously." you then begin shaking your head, thinking how dumb your question sounded.
"Victor, say... do you think I can change?" Aion asked you out of the blue, as he got up from the ground and from the skirmishes of documents he was reading.
"Um? What do you mean?" you asked him, perplexed.
"Despite continuing to behave as usual, Beet seems to have changed a lot after yesterday's events."
"Change seems to be part of human nature, you always seem to change, physically and psychologically."
"I, on the other hand, keep asking myself if my race is predisposed to change at all? The fact that until now I always continued to behave in a certain way certainly does not help me to understand."
"Before yesterday I thought that not all human beings were capable of change, Beet's existence somehow made mine less lonely, that's what I thought." continue Aion.
"In light of these facts, do you think a change is possible for me?" Aion asked you again.
"Of course yes." you answer him without any hesitation.
"How can you say that with such assurance?"
"Aion, why do you read and watch all those books and documentaries on human sociology? To understand us better, right?"
"Sure, and what are you trying to prove with this point?"
"You are trying to learn the best way to relate to us and to others." you tell him.
"Trying to understand us is a proof that you can change, I do not know how the various cultures of your home planet look like, and that does not even have the slightest importance."
"Nothing in this world and in the universe remains static forever, Aion you don't realize it, but since we met every day that passed and you learned something new, you changed too."
"I… did...?"
A silence fell between the two of you.
"HEY, YOU TWO CAN HEAR ME!" you heard the shouts of Gloria calling you, breaking the silence.
"YES, WHAT DO YOU WANT? HAVE YOU FOUND SOMETHING INTERESTING?" you yell back at her.
"COME AND SEE FOR YOURSELF!" Gloria yelled.
"Did you hear that?" you say to Aion.
"Let's just go and find it out." Aion said.
"OK, WE ARE COMING!" you head to the west side to meet Gloria and the others.
You Shouldn't be Here
Soon after, joining your friends.
"What happened? Did you find something?" you immediately asked as soon as you reached them.
"Look for yourself." Hop gives you some projects that he had in hand, in the meantime Beet beside him was reading some documents.
You and Aion take a look at the papers founded by the others.
"... What are these drawings ..." you commented after seeing some artwork depicting what looked like suits or to be more precise armor.
"Anti-Shadow Suppression Armor... what?" you read one of the titles written under the artworks.
"It seems that the Macro Cosmos was trying to create weapons to fight the Shadows." you widen your eyes in surprise.
"More than weapons, they look like armor of some sort." Beet said.
"Listen here, the Anti-Shadow Suppression Armor, was designed according to the physical rules that applies in the Darkest Den,"
"The armors were supposed to be built with the task of defending our colleges and staff members from the Shadows, the armor will also have the function of increasing the wearer's strength, endurance, agility, and perception. " Beet read out loud.
"Strange... Mr. Pendragon never mentioned any armor." pondered Aion.
"He didn't tell me anything to." Beet said as he handed you the documents for you to read too.
"... Interesting, well, we could ask him about this once we get out of here." you say, putting away the collected documents in your bag.
"Did you find anything on the other side?" asked you, Gloria.
"No, but there are still two rooms that we haven't looked at." you told her.
"Well, then let's go check the other rooms."
Your searches continue for another hour, until one of you yells again, calling all the others again.
"What did you find this time?" you ask Hop, who had made the discovery.
"... See for yourself ..." the boy invites you to take a look in the room he discovered, the room was quite different from the previous ones, it looked like an infirmary of some sort.
In the center of the room was a hospital bed, the room was filled with medical instruments and appliances.
"What the..." a shiver runs down Gloria's spine.
"Armor makes a lot more sense now..." you commented.
"Other than defense means, it seems that they also wanted to dissect them." Hop comment, grasping inside his head.
"Di-di-dissect them?" stammered Gloria.
"It seems obvious to me... sigh." Hop said.
"Strangely, the appliances and tools all appear to be brand new." you commented by checking the instruments in the room.
"Apparently they haven't had time to use this place for their purpouse." you declare.
A silence falls into the room.
"What's all this negativity?" Beet reproached you.
"Beet..." you whisper.
"What did you expect? How the hell would they research and find a cure for the Alienation Disorder?" Beet said almost shouting.
"Yes, I know but-"
"But what? Tell me Hop haven't we being killing Shadow until now? You, me and the others?" Beet asked, obviously knowing the answer already.
"I know, I know but, look, I don't even know why that though bothers me, ok!" Hop admitted.
"Besides, I think Victor is right, it seems like nothing has happened here." added Hop.
"This should be related to the fact that the armor needed for confrontation against the Shadows were not yet completed." Aion joined the conversation.
"Has any one of you see the hypothetical garage where these armors were being made?" Aion asked.
"Nothing of that sort." you answered, while the others just shook their heads.
"... Before that, let's take a look at this room."
You start doing your research right there in the room as well.
"Uhm, these papers ..." you say, leafing through one of the files you were holding.
As you flip through the dossier and read the titles, a smile formed on your face.
"Guys... found it!" you called over the others, waving the file in your hands.
"Really? Show us!" Hop, exclaimed, snatching the file from your hands.
Gloria said nothing, but her face communicated all the emotions she was feeling at that moment.
"Hypothetical Treatments for Alienation Disorder." Hop read the document excitedly.
"Antidepressants, cognitive psychotherapy, neuroleptics." Hop read out loud the various treatments recommended.
"There is also a paragraph that goes into detail." Hop turned to Gloria with a big smile.
"Gloria, it's not too late for Aunt Veronica."
"I-" Gloria couldn't even begin the sentence that her eyes filled with tears and she hugged Hop in the attempt to hide her crying face.
Between sobs, the only thing Gloria managed to say was,
"T-thanks ..."
"Don't mention it."
...
Later at Central Wyndon Station.
After taking your last look at the lab, you have exited the lab to return to your world.
"Surely you want to talk to Mr. Pendragon as soon as possible, wouldn't you?" Beet asked as you were waiting for his S-Bus.
"In the meantime, can I ask you to hand me over the documents so that I can directly give them to his secretary? It would be too dangerous to take them to your dormitory, and someone could discover the Darkest Den like that." Beet explained.
"Yes, sure..." you give him the files and projects that you were carrying with you.
"Thank you very much."
"Your S-Bus is coming, Beet." Hop warned the amethyst-eyed boy.
"Expect a meeting tomorrow after school at the Macro Cosmos offices." Beet warned you.
"Having said that, I wish you a good evening." Beet got on the S-BUS that depart soon after.
EVENING
A Sky Full of Stars
After dinner, Hop and Gloria had gone to their respective rooms to video call their loved ones.
You and Aion went to the common room with the other students to watch some TV.
"Victor." Aion called you.
"Yes."
"Do you have a moment?" Aion asked you before inviting you out to the dorm parking lot.
"What did you want to talk about?" you ask him.
"I wanted to end the talk we had today by asking you a favor?" Aion said.
"What could I do for you?"
"Can you help me in my research and study of human society?"
"In your research?"
"I'm your guide in the Darkest Den, but when it comes to this world, I'm pretty clueless." admitted Aion.
"Although I worked with the Macro Cosmos for months now, I didn't have anyone to ask this favor to, the chairman and his secretary are quite busy, and I thought I shouldn't even bother to request that to Beet."
"I think I can learn a lot more with you, what do you say?"
"Sure, it seems like fun, I'd be more than happy to help you." you told the alien.
"I'm immensely grateful." Aion thanked you.
You can feel Aion's trust, you sense a tie of friendship binding you and Aion...

"..."
"Thanks for listening to me, but before we head back inside, I wanted to ask you one last thing." Aion stopped you.
"Yes, tell me."
"... I never saw you call your family like the other do, why is that?" Aion's question you.
"We-well I..."
"Not only Hop and Gloria but also the other students call or visit their relatives, is it that your parents are no longer with us?"
"No no no, none of that is just that..." you sighed.
"It's just... that I already heard them last week, and I think that was enough, my family and I are not as close as the Mercury and the Tyr's." you told him.
"... I see."
"We better head back now before Sonia sees us." you walked toward the entrance of the dorm.
The rest of the evening was pretty quiet.
Monday 11 October Afternoon/ Clear
Corn Dog
The next day.
After the final ring of the bell that indicated the end of lessons, you and Gloria were heading toward the gardens to meet Aion and Beet, Hop went to the restroom and he told you to wait for him by the others.
"Gloria, Victor!" a familiar voice suddenly called you.
"Huh? Prof. Kleio." Gloria exclaimed surprised.
"What can we do for you?" you asked her.
"Y-you see I ..." Sonia then clear her throat to give a tone to her words.
"Miss Tyr, I want to have a few words with you, today before dinner toward six, but do not worry it's nothing you need to concern yourself over. "Sonia said sternly.
"O-ok..."
"Very well then, I wish you a good afternoon and see you later." Sonia sprinted towards the teacher's room, where she probably still had some tasks to attend to.
"... What do you think she wants from me?" Gloria asked you.
"I don't know, maybe she wants to know about your state of mental health, after all, she was the one who warned you of your mother." you speculate.
"Maybe... anyway, we have to catch up with the others, let's go." you and Gloria continue towards the garden.
Soon after
"So that's the situation, Mr. Pendragon will be available only on Friday, I know yesterday I told you he will be free today, but obviously I was wrong."
"We will have to wait until then." Beet communicated to you.
"Fuck, that much?." Hop swore.
"Well, that was to be expected." Gloria said.
"The life of the richest man in Galar is certainly plentful." you comment.
"There is nothing you can do about it anyway, having said that, I must go, see you." said Beet.
"Huh?! Wait, where are you going? Wanna tag along?" Gloria stopped him.
"... That will be for another time, after the battle last weekend, I would like to go get some visits for my old wound." Beet said.
"Then let us know when you are available next time, so we can throw you a welcome party." Gloria said.
"... Sure, excuse me now." Beet went towards the school exit.
"Is it me or lately Beet has been very kind towards Gloria?" Hop wondered.
"Huh? What are you saying?! It's since we defeated Shadow Mary together that he became more considerate to us all!" Gloria replied blushing.
"You say?" you tried to tease her.
"W-what?! Come on, guys, stop bothering me." Gloria insisted, more and more embarrassed.
"Humpf!" the girl grimaced to you and then walked away as well.
"Where are you going?" Hop asked her.
"To look for Marnie, don't follow me!" she said, quite furious.
"Something tells me we shouldn't follow her, do we want to go to the arcade?" Hop suggested.
"You want to play arcades? In this century?" you jokingly asked Hop.
"Tch, tch and I here thought that you were a man of culture aswell sir Victor." Hop started talking with a marked wyndonian accent.
"Didn't you know that arcades were getting back in vogue? Especially in Kanto and Johto, where they even have some very strange arcades that can be also played with cards." told you about Hop.
"Whatever, those slot machines are basically money eater devices, wouldn't it be better to buy a console? What about your gaming laptop?" you asked Hop.
"Well yes sure, but the experience is totally different, come on you should try it at least once." Hop spurred you.
"Arcades... I would like to try them as well." said Aion.
"You too, Aion!" you said with an expression of shock.
"Aion my man, I know you would understand me!" Hop put his arm around Aion's neck.
"See, Victor, even an extraterrestrial is willing to give arcades chances."
"sigh what about Gloria?" you asked him.
"Huh? What about her? Didn't she say that she was going to look for Marnie?"
"Just leave her be, she doesn't like going playing at the arcades, to begin with anyway." Hop said.
"..." you stared at Hop for a moment.
"Anyway, I'm going to join Gloria and Marnie as well se-"
"NO, YOU ARE NOT!" Hop proceeded by grabbing your arm to drag you toward Central Wyndon to the Game Corner, where you will eventually spend your afternoon.
