Marcy and the Frogs
Chapter 5: Living In A Farm
During that second day at the Plantars Farm, Marcy is sleeping on the floor in Sprig's room while her new best friend with pajamas on, Sprig is sleeping on his hammock. They've been having fun last night since she moved in to his room due to the basement that was flooded by river lamprey. Marcy insist to help Hop Pop fixing it, but he politely declined because he knew that he can handle it.
Right now, Marcy and Sprig are sharing rooms until the flood is cleared. Just then, Hop Pop came in when he opens the door to let them know that breakfast is ready.
"Rise and shine, sleepyheads! Breakfast is ready!" said Hop Pop.
Both kids quickly jolts up with a smile.
"Breakfast!" Sprig chimes.
"All right! I'm hungry!" Marcy pumps.
"Heh, crazy kids." Hop Pop chuckled before he left back downstairs.
Marcy looked at Sprig when she smiles her little pink frog friend.
"Morning, Sprig." Marcy greeted.
"Morning, Marcy. Having goodnight sleep last night?" Sprig asked.
"It was alright, but I couldn't help, but feel a little sweaty. At least I drink plenty of water before bed." replied Marcy.
"Sweaty? Are you feeling okay?" Sprig puzzled.
"Pfft. Of course, I'm okay. How else can I be?"
"Well, maybe you need fewer blankets?"
"Oh, no, no, no, no. Don't worry about me. I'll be fine. Trust me." Marcy insist.
Sprig was pondering what is up with his human friend, but then he just shrugged it off.
"Fair enough. After you, best roomie." said Sprig politely when allowing her to walk out.
"Why, thank you, best roomie." replied Marcy.
As the girl walks out from his room, Sprig follows behind. Later on after breakfast, Marcy walked into Hop Pop's office where all books and archives are. She looks very much interested to read books if she can borrow it. Hop Pop notice what she's been up to.
"Find anything?" Hop Pop asked.
"Oh, Mr. Plantar." Marcy noticed. "I was wondering if I could borrow your to-"
"No need to ask. You are more welcome to ready anytime you want." Hop Pop cuts off her words.
"Really?" Marcy asked when smiling.
"Absolutely." Hop Pop answered.
"Wow! Amphibia's wildlife guide book! Are there any animals here?!" Marcy surprised.
"Why, yes. We do have animals. Although, it could be very dangerous when towards these frogs. Like snakes, alligator, and ferocious killer bird!"
"That will be terrified." Marcy shuddered.
"I thought so. Welp, hope you enjoy reading."
"Thanks, Mr. Plantar." Marcy thanked him.
Then she started to read wildlife book while walking upstairs to Sprig's room. Later that night, Sprig was already asleep, but Marcy is the only one that can stay awake when writing down her journal from the book that she just borrowed. Marcy was fascinated by all of each creatures and environmental resources. She started to wonder which creature that are not dangerous. Well, besides friendly snail.
The next morning on the third day, Marcy is reading the history book that she borrowed from Hop Pop, but Sprig was puzzled while eating his breakfast. He was wondering why Marcy is reading the book on the table.
"Whatcha reading?" Sprig asked.
Marcy perks up smiling.
"I'm reading the part where Newtopians army that were involved in the Sand War." Marcy answered.
"Sand War? Cool!" Polly jumps in.
"Yeah! It's like War of the Warlords."
"The War of what now?" Sprig puzzled.
"Oh, it's fantasy movie. It was my favorite!" Marcy explains.
"What's a movie?" Polly asked.
Just then, when Hop Pop hollers.
"Come on, kids! It's time for chores!"
Sprig and Polly went groaning, but Marcy raised her eyebrows curious. Later on, Marcy is helping out with the Plantars while doing their gardening. She loves farming like no one has ever admired to. Hop Pop was impressed that she is not complaining.
"Gotta say, Marcy. I'm impressed." said Hop Pop.
"Thanks, Mr. Plantar. My mom taught me how to do gardening the flowers from my home." replied Marcy.
"Quite so."
Sprig tries to pull off the weed, but it was too strong until he felt that he was yanked towards where the weed is and then he was stuck upside down with his bottom waving his legs.
"HELP! GET ME OUTTA HERE! I'M STUCK!" Sprig yells, but muffled.
Hop Pop face palm while Marcy chuckles a bit.
Later that night, Sprig sleeps while croaking, but Marcy is wearing her headphone to cover her ears while reading the spellbook that Maddie gave her. She really looks very fond of all fantasy since her arrival.
On the fourth day, Marcy was outside of the farm when she decided to start learning to do some magic by making potion. She wrote the instructions on her journal like how she's copying notes. When Marcy was about to pour the vile of green potion into pink very carefully, but Sprig tapped his finger on her shoulder when she wasn't paying attention.
"Hey, what are you doing?" Sprig asked.
Marcy yelps, but accidentally pour the green potion too fast into the pink potion until it explodes with a black puff. All that's left was some black marks all over them while Sprig's hat was caught on small fire. Sprig let out a cough while Marcy chuckled nervously.
Later that night again, Sprig close the window when it's get too cold, but Marcy is reading about farming. Maybe she'll know what she can do to help around the farm. Then she's writing down her journal about farming and gardening. Good thing her adoptive mother taught her how to do gardening.
On the fifth day, Marcy walks over to the barn when carrying a bag of seed for Bessie. She already met her since her first night at the farm. Once Marcy walkthrough the entrance, Bessie perks up and give her a happy chirp.
She smiles back at the snail. Marcy loves snail, besides just frogs and butterfly. She poured out the seeds from the bag into the wooden through until its all empty. Bessie leans down and start eating until she chirps happily. Marcy reach her hand to pet Bessie until she heard the snail purr making the girl giggles.
And another evening, Marcy is doing a sketch of Bessie, but Sprig throws his wet towel on her by accident. Then she sees him cleaning his web crusties as the pink frog looks back at her.
"Sorry. My bad." Sprig apologize.
A week and a half later, or should I say on the tenth day. When Sprig entered his room, he paused and looked surprised at Marcy with her jacket tied around her neck like cloak who's been doing all the work of making potions with each vile, potion powders, ingredients, and a small cauldron when stirring a spoon. Marcy keeps stirring until she looks up at Sprig when his face was dumbstruck.
"Oh, hey Sprig." Marcy greeted.
"Marcy? What's all this?" Sprig asked when stunned.
"Hmm? Oh! Sorry about that. I was just practicing to become a witch when Maddie taught me how to use magic."
"Maddie?!"
"Uh-huh, I'm her apprentice and she's my teacher! Isn't it great?!" Marcy smiles.
Sprig is feeling unease about this at first.
"Uh, yeah. Great! Whoa, would you look at the time. I gotta go help Hop Pop." Sprig nervous and then sped off leaving Marcy confused.
Meanwhile in the basement, Hop Pop is still looking for the leak in the water, but still no sign of it.
"Where the frog are you?" Hop Pop mumbled.
Sprig opens the back door to check on Hop Pop.
"Hey, Hop Pop. How much longer, ya think? Tonight?" Sprig asked.
"Not a chance." replied Hop Pop.
"Oh, let me help, let me help! You know my underwater sight is better than yours. Eh? Eh?"
"That's a bunch of malarkey! My eyesight's fine!"
Then suddenly, Marcy opens the main door to the basement.
"Hey, Mr. Plantar. How's the leak is going?" Marcy asked.
"(sigh) Sorry kiddo, but I couldn't find that dang blasted leak if it kills me." Hop Pop sighed.
Marcy drops her smile and start to think of something. She really wanted to help him to find the leak, but suddenly it hit her. Marcy realized what's missing.
"Hang on! I'll be right back!"
Marcy sped out that fast, leaving Hop Pop confused until she came back while holding the book of wildlife that she's been reading. Sprig hops down on the ladder.
"What's up?" Sprig asked.
"I just realized something." Marcy answered.
"What is it, then?" Hop Pop asked.
She turns the page until she found something before she speaks.
"I think I know why there was a leak. It was a River Lamprey, a river dwelling creature that's been sighting in the river. It must've been the reason why the basement was flooded."
"Say WHAAAAAAT?!" Hop Pop stunned.
"(giggles) Sorry, I just thought that your voice sounds funny." Marcy giggles.
"Well, um... it's complicated." Hop Pop reach his arm around his head to rub.
"Anyway, the river lamprey is an ancient extant lineage of jawless fish and it has a toothed, funnel-like sucking mouth. Mr. Plantar, I believe that the lamprey is causing the leak."
Both frogs were dumbstruck while blinking their eyes twice until Hop Pop spoke up.
"How in a frog did you learn all that?!"
"Oh, it wasn't that easy. My uncle got me a biological book where I can study animals from my world. That's exactly what I was reading."
"Then how do we do get rid of that?" Sprig asked.
"Well, we can't. They're too fast enough to swim. Unless..."
Marcy is scratching her chin with her finger, thinking if there's a solution. Sprig and Hop Pop were puzzled until Marcy hands out a wooden club to Sprig while she's carrying the other one.
"Uh, Marcy? What are you doing?" Hop Pop puzzled.
"We're gonna whack it as hard as we can so that we can fix the leak." Marcy answered.
"Are you serious?! I told you, I can handle this!"
"You have to trust me. I know what I'm doing."
"Are you sure this would work?" Sprig asked.
"Well... probably." Marcy answered.
"Alright, I'll distract them." said Sprig before he jumps into the water.
Let's hope her plan would work. Sprig swims underwater to distract the lamprey, but what shocking him that there are two until they turn their heads at Sprig and swam towards him. Sprig jumps up when he's ready.
"Get ready! Here they come!" Sprig reminded while Marcy nodded.
Then suddenly, the two lampreys swims up with fins showing up while circle in attack. Hop Pop were gasp that they realize what Marcy is telling the truth.
"(gasp) It's the lampreys! Quick, boy! Knock em' out!" Hop Pop ordered.
Sprig nodded until one of the lampreys jumps out to attack, but he hits one to above water and Marcy hits the other one with a club. Then the two lamprey swim back towards them to make a spinning attack. It's now or never.
"Ready..." Marcy steady as she goes until two lampreys jumps up above the water before they could reach her. "NOW!"
Marcy swing her club to whack the lampreys and flew them against the wall while sinking underwater, then dig a big hole at the bottom, and suck all the water out from the basement. Once the flood is cleared Sprig and Hop Pop were shocked that Marcy did it.
"Whoa! How'd you do that?!" Sprig amazed.
"My dad taught me how to play baseball." Marcy answered when smirked.
"What's a baseball?" Hop Pop puzzled.
"It's a sport where people plays from my world."
"Ooh! That sounds like fun!" Sprig seems to impress.
"That's right, but first, I need to fix something to avoid the leak." said Marcy
Later on, she went back to Sprig's room to work on a potion to prevent the leak while mixed up ingredient until its all ready with sticky situation. It's perfect! Then she runs back down while holding the potion that was purple until she reach back to basement to start picking up some bricks and rubble to put it up while carefully pouring the potion on it until it became sticky.
Once she's done pouring, she carefully fixed the hole on the bottom by pouring it to blocked the leak. She wipes her forehead with her right arm. Sprig and Hop Pop went stunning that she fix this.
"I don't believe it! She fix it!" Sprig stunned.
"Well I'll be danged!" Hop Pop smiles.
Marcy turns her head at them smiling.
"See? I told you that you trust me." said Marcy.
Just then when Polly arrives to see what's going on.
"What did I miss?" Polly asked.
"Polly! Marcy figured how to solve our problems by getting rid of that lampreys that's been leaking the whole basement, then she fix the hole on the ground!" Sprig chimes.
"Really? Did she put up a spell or something?"
"Sorry, Polly. Maybe next time." Marcy politely apologize.
"(groan) Aw, man. I wanted to see how awesome you've been doing!" Polly groaned.
"Heh, typical Polly. Always up for an action." Hop Pop chuckled.
"So, if the leak is fixed, then she can no longer sleep with me?" Sprig asked.
"Yep! I'm moving back down here! Sorry that I made mess around your room." said Marcy.
"Nah, it's not a big deal. At least none of us complain for over ten days. Am I right?" Sprig nudge his elbow on Marcy.
"Hold up. How long have you been doing up all night?" Polly looks suspicious on Marcy.
"Well, I read a few books that I burrowed so I can understand what Amphibia is really all about. History, biology, and practicing some magic." Marcy answered.
"I knew it!"
"Well, that settles it. Let's bring her stuff back down in the basement and we're gonna have dinner after that." said Hop Pop.
"Sweet!" Sprig hops up.
"Thank you, Mr. Plantar." Marcy thanked him kindly.
"Please, call me Hop Pop." Hop Pop replied.
"Okay, Hop Pop. Thank you."
"Of course."
Later that evening after dinner, they've already brought Marcy's stuff back downstairs to the basement while she's sorting out some equipment for doing witchcraft. Hop Pop has setup her bed where she can sleep before he went to his bed. Then finally, Sprig has set the book down on the crate.
He turns around and see Marcy that's been reading another book that she borrowed while wearing her pajamas. He's curious why she's reading so many books rather playing with him. He felt like he's always left out. Nobody blames her for this. Then Marcy noticed when he looks down while rubbing his arm after setting the book down.
"Hey, Sprig. Are you okay?" Marcy asked softly.
"Huh?" Sprig perks up where she's staring. "Oh, it was nothing. I was just... well..."
Marcy realize what's bugging him.
"Is something wrong?"
"Nah, not really."
"Is it because that I've been reading rather than playing?"
"It's not that. It's just..." Sprig paused before he let out a sighed sadly. "I'm starting to feel like that I'm bored."
"Aw, I'm sorry. I have no idea that you're into something I like." Marcy apologize.
"It was alright. I understand if you want some privacy like Hop Pop always does." Sprig brush it off.
"Wait, would you rather bunk with me? Just for once?"
Sprig turn his head around and see Marcy with her pleaded look. Can he say no to that.
"Aw, what the heck." Sprig sighed.
He hops on Marcy's bed while the girl giggles and then covered themselves with bed sheets. Sprig laughs softly that he gets hang out with his best friend.
"Hey, Marcy? Thanks for bunking in my room with me." Sprig thanked her.
"No problem. At least we get hangout tomorrow." replied Marcy.
"Yeah, tomorrow."
"Welp, goodnight."
"Sleep tight."
"Dream of bed bugs tonight."
Sprig chuckled before he drifted into sleep. Marcy formed her small smile at her pink frog friend sleeping. She set the book down on the crate and tapped on the blue mushroom to light out. Then she snuggled herself and closed her eyes while drifting to sleep. She's got a whole lotta things to catch up in this frog world. After all, at least she gets her chance to hangout with her best buddy.
Welp, that was it. I kinda based off of "Flood, Sweat, and Tears", but in that version where Marcy never bugs Sprig while he's asleep. I hope you enjoy reading and have a wonderful day. Stay tuned for the next chapter!
