As their train traveled through Italy's war-ravaged and zombie-infested countryside, Kill Squad 78 was busy getting ready for the briefing on their next mission, which was going to be sent through the radio. While most members rested and recuperated in one of the sleeper cars connected to the train, Makoto, Chihiro, and Byakuya were at the train's radio station, operated by a resistance member. As the radio operator tuned to Bruno's frequency, Chihiro prayed that somehow, Bruno had made it out alive from the train station. While he was doing that, Makoto and Byakuya were restocking their supplies during the journey, as they had left the radio station and headed to the armory.
"You know, Togami," Makoto spoke as he loaded his clips, "I have a sneaking suspicion that this attack was led by something that is both sadistic and demonic."
"Yeah right," Byakuya responded, "I felt we were being watched by something. I didn't see what was watching us, but we were being watched."
"By who?" Makoto quipped, "and by what?"
"It didn't feel right with me, Makoto," Byakuya turned to him, "It felt like there was something evil back there in Milan."
As they were talking, Chihiro then ran into the armory with a smile on his face.
"Guys!" Chihiro yelled. "Guys!"
"What is it, Chihiro?" Makoto spoke, "Why have you called us in the middle of a conversation?"
"It's Bruno!" Chihiro responded, "He's alive!"
Makoto sighed with relief, while Byakuya went over to Chihiro to speak with him.
"What did he say, Chihiro?" he spoke.
"He said he needs the entire squad at the radio station." Chihiro responded, "From my experience, if Bruno wants an entire squad listening, it's gotta be something important."
"What are you waiting for, Fujisaki?" Makoto spoke, "Get the entire squad here. They need to listen to this."
"I'm on it, Makoto," Chihiro responded before he went to the other train cars to fetch the members of the kill squad.
(Thirty Minutes Later...)
"What is it, Bruno?" Sayaka spoke, "What are you contacting us about?"
"This is very bad," Bruno's voice came over the radio, "It wasn't just Milan, bases have been going dark all over Europe. Command has ordered all kill teams to evacuate to fortified positions."
"Damn it..." Mondo sighed despondently, "We're truly screwed..."
"Don't fret, Mondo," Kyoko responded as she patted Mondo's back, "We'll find a way through this mess..."
"What does command want us to do, Bruno?" Junko radioed back, "Where should we go next?"
"Command has ordered me to send all sixteen of you to the city of Venice," Bruno's voice came through the radio again, "It's the nearest city in your vicinity, we can hope that it's still intact."
"Venice?" Makoto responded, "Why Venice, Bruno?"
"We lost contact with Captain Dutton, who's the commanding officer at the Venice base," Bruno radioed, "We need all of you to investigate."
"Shit..." Hifumi whimpered, "I don't like this at all..."
"C'mon big guy, let's get you to your bunk," Taka spoke as he escorted him to his bunk inside the train car next to the armory car.
"What are our objectives, Bruno?" Celestia spoke with suspicion as to what was awaiting them in Venice, "Where should we go or do?"
"It's simple, squad." Bruno radioed, "Rendevous with Captain Dutton, and find out of the city can be held. Bruno out."
"Copy that, Bruno," Chihiro responded before getting off the radio, "This is Chihiro Fujisaki of Kill Squad 78, over and out."
"You heard Bruno!" Makoto ordered his squad, "Arm up and get ready to disembark! We're going to Venice."
And that's the Interlude done! In the next chapter of Zombie Army 4: Ultimate Dead War, Kill Squad 78 goes into the beautiful but abandoned city of Venice, Italy to link up with a resistance cell in the city, but unimaginable horrors await them inside its rotting interior.
