Kouga walked with his arm around Kagome, not speaking as he felt his woman processing a variety of emotions. Her scent shifted so much it was making him a bit nauseous…

The pair continued to walk in silence, with Kagome feeling more and more distant the closer they got to the den, and before Kouga knew it, the iconic waterfall was in front of them. He turned to look at Kagome and heard a familiar voice.

Hakkaku.

His second in command was urgently running towards the pair with his two guards only a few paces behind.

The trio were clad in their armor with their weapons at the ready. That wasn't good, it meant Kouga would have to leave with them.

The sun was dropping and a faint smell of rain was in the air.

Turning to his Miko he watched her face as he spoke- watched her nod as he promised to be back soon, and watched her change her posture as he hugged her.

She hugged him in return briefly and stepped back.

A pang of worry filled his stomach as he saw the clouded look in her eyes.

"Please stay Kagome…" he spoke as he released her.

"I'll have to clear that up as soon as I return." he thought to himself as a pair of wolves joined them for their run along the mountain path.

Kouga glanced back as he trotted into a run alongside Hakkaku watching her smile and wave, but realizing it was the smile from before…. detached.

Kouga pushed speed into his legs, wanting to get this over with quickly so he could return to his woman and bring a real smile to her face.

...

Sinha and Inuyasha had been left in an awkward silence after the dark haired couple left.

Inuyasha hadn't spoken a word, merely sheathing his sword looking her over with a somber face.

"I-I know… that I handled that….not in the best way…" she spoke with a flush filling the silence.

"I think we should take some time to breathe before we address anything that happened… um… should we go back to Miroku?"

She looked up at the silver haired demon who held her heart.

I only reacted this way because of how I feel about you… can't you see that? Her mind was already looking for ways to justify her actions.

But another part of her knew she had reacted childishly.

With no care for her safety or anyone in the area...like Kagome..

She thought of the first attack... and how close Kagome was to it.

She ran her hand over her face, rubbing away her frustrated thoughts, a trickle of guilt falling down her spine, her tail wrapping around her thigh.

Inuyasha nodded at her words and let out a sigh.

He reached for her hand and the pair began their walk.

Sinha was a mess internally as they walked.

Wondering if she had ruined any chance of being civil with Kagome, wondering if Inuyasha could forgive her for the mess she made.

Part way through their walk he stopped and pulled the Kitsune to him, hugging her with quite a bit of strength.

Sinha felt his warm body engulf hers as he leaned in- capturing her lips to his as he ran a clawed hand through her hair.

Gently stroking her cheek as he pulled away he finally spoke her name.

"Sinha…."

She gazed into his golden eyes as the sun was setting.

Such a glorious picture she would treasure in her mind. He was beautiful….

"I need to clear my head." he spoke. Shaking her from her dreamy thoughts.

Her eyes focused on the man before her, filtering his words.

"Um… alone?" she asked feebly.

He gave a soft laugh. "Yea, I just need a little time to process what has happened. You know how I am…" he kissed her forehead, leading a trail of kisses down her nose back to her lips.

"Just continue to Miroku's and I will join you in a bit." he nodded in the direction they had come from.

Damn….

She nodded and released her grip on him.

"Don't stay too long… it smells of rain…"

She watched his silver hair sway as he nodded in agreement.

He turned and jumped into the nearest tree, his scent leaving a trail in her mind as she turned away back to where the Monk was surely waiting...confused.

...

Kagome watched the wolves run off. She stood there quietly for a time.

Not thinking. Merely standing still, watching the water.

She noticed a few fish and minnows in the shadows of the water plants.

She moved closer to watch them feed on the plants taking reprieve in the mind numbing simplicity.

After a long time the water flowed so smoothly she could see her reflection.

She looked over her face, surprised once more that she looked the same, and again her anger surfaced.

How can she look so normal after all that's happened.

After kikyo…..

She clenched her eyes shut as Kikyo's last statement filled her ears.

"We shall see. "

See what!

Frustrated, Kagome shook away her thoughts and looked towards the path to the dens, across the stream she had been admiring moments ago.

Her chest clenched at the thought of being around people in this state, so instead she turned to the forest. Seeking a different refuge.

One of being alone.

Tucking her bow She walked. She walked for a few hours, concentrating on each step, shaking away any unwanted thoughts as they arose.

Her concentration waning with the setting sun.

She came to a familiar clearing, with a familiar well.

Looking at the wooden structure She rolled her eyes.

"What does this even mean…." She spoke to no one in particular.

Walking to the edge she sat down.

Continuing to speak her thoughts she said

"What now? I'm here. I'm back. I'm alone….. I-"

Words died on her tongue.

Her brow furrowed.

I'm alone. She repeated internally.

No… not alone. .. I'm just… lost.

I can handle being alone. I was alone for 3 years…. Alone with my thoughts. Alone with this well….

Her mind flashed back to all the memories of her time..hadn't she spent enough time worrying about her and Inuyasha's relationship?

Why couldn't she move on? Why was she ever born as Kikyo's reincarnation…..

The jewel….

Kagome only once questioned her relationship with Inuyasha.

After her altercation with Hitomiko.

The jewel had sealed away Kagome's true miko power, since Kikyo had wished to never have to fight again. When she died, she burned the jewel with her, prompting it to be reborn within Kagome.

Shortly after freeing Hitomiko, Kagome had returned to her time- needing to study when she learned that making the right wish on the Shikon Jewel would destroy it.

Kikyo had made a wish to see Inuyasha again, and to some extent, Kagome believed it was the reason the old witch ended up successfully resurrecting her.

But it couldn't have happened if Kagome wasn't in the warring states at the time.

How could the jewel have such power, to pull Kagome through time? To have her soul available to be sucked out and manipulated into clay?

She had gone down a rabbit hole of thoughts including a dark path that asked if her relationship with Inuyasha was genuine-or just the work of the jewel to gain eventual power….

Thinking back to the final battle with Naraku- her stomach dropped.

It COULD make sense… the jewel wanted them both for different reasons… Inuyasha so he could be one of the demons to forever battle inside the jewel, and Kagome to seal away her powers to prevent its own destruction.

But the jewel is gone, so why… Why is Kikyo's soul still making an appearance?!

Was the jewel back?! Is that why she was able to finally come back to Inuyasha!?

A shudder went down her spine at the dangerous thought.

She stood slowly over the bone eater's well.

Tracing her fingers over the aged wood-she peered over it's edge.

But- if by chance it was…. Would I be able to go home? Like before?

She peered down into its depths, a small breeze brushing hair along her cheeks.

She could smell the rain.

I should head back to the dens… she thought to herself.

Yet she didn't move. She continued to peer over the edge into the dark bottom.

With the sun setting and the dark clouds it was getting harder and harder to see the bottom.

Her grip continuously tightened as her vision grew less and less clear.

Her breathing slowed as she waited…

Rain began to fall, cool drops permeating her hair as she continued to wait.

Hearing only the sounds of the forest and her own beating heart in her ears.

Was this REALLY worth never seeing my mother again!?

The familiar thought struck through her like a lightning bolt. Tears fell freely as her legs buckled beneath her.

Kneeling at the edge of the well she sobbed.

Kouga, Sango, Miroku, and…Inuyasha…..people here cared about her yet….

I still miss my mom! Nothing is making sense anymore!

She allowed herself to cry it out, the rain providing a veil of privacy.

Her thoughts were jumbled and when she finally could cry no more for the presence of her mother, she turned and leaned against the aged wood.

She pulled her knees to her chest and rested her cheek on her knees.

The rain's steady rhythm was soothing against her body.

The night settled in around her.

She began to contemplate what was happening to her, and her thoughts turned to Inuyasha.

The man that it seemed to revolve around.

If only I could fly away to another country….

She thought about corny romance movies where the betrayed lover would flee to another country or town and start over.

She couldn't even do that now. Or.. maybe she could, but it would definitely be dangerous.

People didn't just hop on a piece of wood and make it across the ocean in this age.

I wonder if Kilala would make a journey like that…

Her sporadic thoughts were interrupted by a set of legs appearing before her.

She sighed looking up at Inuyasha.

His gold eyes reflected the troubled look from her own.

Rain had soaked him through as well, and she wondered quietly what he was doing here.

He moved and sat beside her, leaning against the well, propping one arm on his raised leg, picking at the wet ground with the other.

The pair merely sat, saying nothing.

After about an hour the rain came to a stop and Kagome squeezed the water from her hair. Low clouds were moving quickly across the sky, scattering moonlight around them.

"Cold?" Inuyasha finally spoke.

Kagome looked at her long time friend and nodded. He extended his arm, and she scooted next to him, leaning her head on his shoulder.

It was weird the level of familiarity she still had in this position.

His arm circled her shoulder, securing around her. Instantly warmth spread from his body to hers, ridding her skin of the cold.

Perks of demonic blood...

The silence between the two continued and to both of their surprise- the pair drifted off to sleep. Both exhausted from the day's events.
