Chapter 33~Dreadful
(next morning at Elena's)
Elena sat up in bed at the noise of her phone buzzing, she grabbed the phone and saw it was a text from Stefan,
To: Elena
From: Stefan
"Good morning sunshine."
Elena sighed and wondered how Stefan could be so chipper with all this going on? Not in the mood to text she just called him.
(ring ring)
"How are you Elena?" Stefan asked as he answered the phone.
"I've been better." she answered honestly. "Why are you so Chipper?"
Stefan paused for a moment before answering "Honestly, I just feel like everything is going to be okay. I talked to Katherine this morning and quizzed her on your life, she seem to have absorbed everything you went over with her.
"Really?" Elena said surprised!
"Yes, I'm starting to think your right Elena! I think Katherine really does want Klaus dead and her freedom."
Elena without thinking and a snarky tone replied "What else does she want Stefan?"
"What do you mean?" he asked?
"I mean she mentioned personal reasons yesterday and I think those reasons are you!" Stefan started to interrupt but she cut him off. "Seriously, she has done nothing but make it known that she still loves you! Freedom from Klaus is also freedom to pursue you!" Elena finished, feeling very bad about being jealous, considering she has been crossing lines with Damon like crazy! Somehow she just couldn't help herself.
Stefan changed the subject. "Have you talk to Bonnie this morning?"
"No, but I need to call and check on her, see how she's doing with the spells." she sighed.
"You should wait for Elijah to call us first like he said he would." he added a bit hesitantly.
"No, I am going to call her right now! I need to know how long...before I..." she stops there not wanting to finish the sentence but Stefan knows exactly what she meant.
"I know. I can't say I like that part or any part of this, for that matter. I'll just be glad when this is all over." Elena started to speak and Stefan interjected. "Elena you seem off, somehow different. You seem like something is wrong, even before all this."
After silence for several seconds, Elena tried to be honest but without any details. "Stefan I...there is something I'm going through and I just need some time to clear my head. When I get back we will talk about everything okay?" Elena began twirling her hair and tapping her foot on the floor nervously.
"Oh...okay. Well Call Bonnie and let me know what she says. Love you." he said with a twinge of sadness.
"Love you too Stefan." Elena hung up and the tears began to fall and her heart felt squeezed by the pain of her betrayal and the secrets she was keeping from Stefan, she couldn't dwell on that right now so she shook her head to try to clear it, wiped her tears with the back of her hand and quickly called Bonnie.
(ring ring)
Bonnie answered sounded very groggy. "Hello..."
"Bonnie! So good to hear your voice, are you okay?"
"Yes...um...just been up all night and just got to sleep." before Elena could even say anything Bonnie hastily said. "He said I need to call you from the other phone!" and then the line went dead, before Elena could get too worried though, she jumped when the burner phone on the dresser rang! She answered it quickly!
"Hello!"
"Sorry Elena, Elijah hung up the phone! He said we can't take any chances now that the plan is in motion and we must use these burner phones. Sheila and I were up all night, we learned two of the spells already!" Bonnie finished sounding quite proud!
"Really! Which ones?"
"We learned the human spell to put on Katherine and the travel spell..." Bonnie's tone went from excitement to sad at the mention of the second one.
"Oh...so when will I leave?" Elena held her breath while waiting for the answer.
"The full moon is exactly fifteen days from now. Elijah says we should send you...um...tomorrow, this will give him two weeks to lure Klaus here and convince him that he's trying to help him break the hybrid curse and give us time to learn and perfect the spell." Elena gasped but before she said anything Bonnie continued.. "I know it's soon and everything is happening so fast but Elijah thinks the sooner your back in time, the safer it is for you Elena."
Elena was choked up but she managed to calm herself and speak steadily. "I understand. I guess I better enjoy this day and spend time with everyone."
Bonnie was strengthened to hear the resolve and bravery in Elena's voice. "Don't worry Elena. We worked on the spell all night and Sheila has used the time travel spell before. Sheila wanted me to let you know that when you come back, all memories will be erased of your presence in the past. You will remember everything of course. She also recommends going with the flow and not trying to change anything, Don't tempt fate! Last, she said it will help if you bring a Journal, for the times you feel isolated and alone." Bonnie finishes sadly.
"I won't be alone Bonnie!" Elena says, trying to reassure herself.
"No, but you don't know how things will go down Elena! They won't know you in 1864, and keeping the secret will make you feel alone."
Elena is now realizing some hard facts. She will be there for two weeks...maybe longer if things don't go right here! She will need to improvise on a moments notice! She will be in a time she is not familiar with at all but she has to go when their human still, that's the whole point of getting to know them, just so happens they were human so long ago.. things are going to be tougher than she thought.
She starts to cry and does nothing to hide that from Bonnie as she ask questions.
"What time tomorrow? Where? What should I bring? Can everyone be there to send me off?'
Bonnie's heart broke, hearing her cry. "I will find out all the details and call you back...okay?'
"Okay...thank you Bonnie."
Bonnie spoke softly in her tender voice..tears streaming but trying to be strong for Elena.. "No Need to thank me Elena, you know I love you."
"I love you too Bonnie and I will talk to you soon." Elena hung up and just fell on the bed, she could no longer hold back the sobs and she began to tremble and feel fear, not yet the fear of time traveling, but the fear for them, their safety and with that came anger, at herself, for leaving them all here to deal with Klaus and this dangerous situation while she got to escape it all. Now she was feeling guilt too. She needed to cry hard and get it all out of her system and somehow find reassurance she was doing the right thing, little did she know, reassurance and more drama would come sooner than she knew and from the person she least expected.
(doorbell chimes)
Elena jumps from the bed quickly to go wash her face in the bathroom and run downstairs to answer the door, she's expecting Stefan, Damon, or Caroline...Not Katherine! Elena stares with shock and her mouth is open in a surprise O! Katherine speaks first.
"Rude! Are you going to invite me in?"
"Ah...yes, I just didn't expect to see you this morning!" Elena opens the door wider and moves aside while Katherine saunters in and makes herself at home in the kitchen. "I just thought we should talk." Katherine says while rudely propping her feet on Elena's kitchen table.
"Okay..." is all that Elena can muster up at first. "I guess today is as good since I'm leaving tomorrow." she adds and starts to cry and choke up a bit, which angers her for Katherine to see what she was trying so hard to hide.
"Yes. I know. Elijah told me already. Bonnie and Sheila will put the human spell on me first, so that I can resume your life here as soon as you leave."
Elena suddenly curious.. "Will you actually be human?"
"No, I will just have a heartbeat but don't worry Elena, I'm very good at playing a vulnerable human, especially you...as you well know." Katherine said with a smirk on her face and spitefully added.. "Don't worry...I will keep Stefan company."
Elena balled her fist at her side.. "Oh I'm sure you will! Why don't you just leave! I don't want to spend my last day with you anyways!
Katherine remained calm and lost the smirk off her face... "Oh simmer down Elena. I have never hid the fact I love Stefan. I'm going to say this once so just sit down and listen.
Not only did Elena remain standing but she crossed her arms over her chest in a huff and leaned against the kitchen counter and Katherine continued...
"I came by to clear the Air and like I said yesterday, I'm not doing this for you but for me! I want my freedom from Klaus and Stefan not hating me would be nice too. With that being said, your doing the right thing Elena. Klaus would sacrifice you in two seconds and nobody is stronger than an Original! Time travel is your safest bet! I promise to play your part well and end this! I want Klaus dead more than any of you and if you can trust me on anything...trust that!
Somehow Elena did trust her on that and she relaxed her stance a bit and Katherine continued... "I also came by to give you some advice..I hear you are going to 1864. Been there, done that, made the shirt." Katherine was smiling and Elena's eyes widened..Just so you know, both brothers are very fragile as humans. Both will fall for you because you look like me of course." Elena rolls her eyes but Katherine ignores her. "Seriously be careful with them! Maybe get to know them without leading them on."
Elena can't take anymore and she's pissed.. "That's Funny coming from you! You toyed with them both! You compelled them to keep the secret from each other!" Elena is yelling at this point. "You turned them into Vampires and you want to lecture me! I am nothing like you!"
"Oh Elena you say your nothing like me but I see the way you look at Damon! Your exactly like me...you love Stefan but your attracted to Damon and you know it!" You don't even know the real Stefan and Damon but you will. You know what? I think you will be surprised at how much more you and human Damon have in common." Katherine added while winking at Elena which only made her even more angry.
"Get out Katherine!" Elena screamed and just then Damon and Stefan came through the front door in vamp speed! "What's going on?" both said in unison. Katherine stood to her feet mad sauntered toward the front door the same way she had walked in and spoke first. Elena was huffing and her face was completely red, she was just to angry to speak!
"I was just clearing the air and giving her some advice before she leaves tomorrow." Katherine leaves before Elena can reply and Stefan rushes to her. "Are you alright? What does she mean your leaving tomorrow?"
Elena takes a few deep breaths to calm herself and then pours a glass of water. After a few minutes she explains what Bonnie had told her earlier. They both look very upset and Stefan chimes in first with Damon soon following..
"Tomorrow? That soon!"
"Why tomorrow?" Damon asked.
"Its only fifteen days until the full moon and Elijah will need the two weeks to lure Klaus and convince him he's helping him break the curse." Elena answered with a sympathetic look to both of them.
Stefan sounded worried.. "So you will be gone for two weeks!" it was more as a statement than a question...he continued. "Why would Katherine give you advice on time travel?"
Elena and Damon looked at each other with a knowing look and then both looked back to Stefan and Elena answered. "Because she knows I am going to 1864 to be with you both as humans."
Damon looked away and Stefan was shocked but he noticed that Damon was not."What? Why didn't I know this? Why is Damon not surprised?" he asked suspiciously eying Damon again.
Elena answered quickly. "Sorry Stefan. I had chatted with Bonnie and Caroline and then Bonnie told Damon while you were with Caroline meeting John and Demetri. I guess I forgot to tell you with everything happening so fast. I'm so sorry Stefan."
after Stefan pondered for a minute... "Why not with your parents?"
"I can't see them again, knowing that I will have to let them go and say goodbye all over again! I will see you two again and I want to know what you both were like as humans and see the men inside the Vampire! I also can get away to a stress free time and get a much needed break Stefan. Do you know what my life has been like the last year?" Elena lowered her head into her hands and sighed.
Stefan seemed okay with her reasoning but still looked at her with a bit of suspicion
"Well I guess you've given this a lot of thought."
"I have. I trust you both so much and I will be safe there."
Damon chimed in.. "How will you get in with us? Katherine faked being an orphan."
Elena was hesitant to answer for she didn't even know herself. "I don't know. I will figure it out as I go. Please don't worry and let's just enjoy my last day before I leave tomorrow. I feel guilty enough escaping all this, while all of you are in danger!" Elena said sadly looking down at her feet.
Damon spoke up. "We will be fine Elena. We are not even sure if we will even play a part in it yet? Elijah will protect Bonnie, We will protect Vampire Barbie and who cares about Katherine?"
Elena smiled for the first time that day and giggled softly, feeling a bit relieved, realizing that Damon was right! She is the human...the one without any powers and the most in danger when Klaus comes. Stefan seemed to have changed his mood as well and said: "So what fun are we going to have today?"
Just then the burner phone rang and Elena answered and it was Bonnie.
A/N Well I'm back again working on this story. Thanks so much for reviews and follows and favorites! I am truly sorry for the 9 months without a chapter. I had some medical trouble...a heart attack and needed a stent and there has been lifestyle changes...anyways I don't want to bore you with all that but just wanted to say I'm thankful to God that I'm even still here to work on this story. Already wrote half of the next chapter! Hope everyone is ready for Fall...I know I am. Please be kind and review, this is another transition type chapter and I could use the encouragement.
