The Ship to England
The trio arrived at the docks. Tom held Newt's hand tightly. He had been waiting for this his whole life. He was now returning to where he belonged. The crowd was boarding the boat. There was still time left for a good goodbye.
"Well... it's been..." Newt awkwardly tried to speak to Tina but she knew what he was trying to say.
"Hasn't it?" she asked a little excitedly. "Listen, Newt, I wanted to thank you for getting me my job back,"
"Well, I can't think of anyone that I'd rather have to investigate me," Newt answered awkwardly. "And you deserved it. For all your help,"
Tom noticed the spark between them; he smiled.
"Well, I'll be heading to the Ministry. To deliver my manuscript," he said.
"I'll look out for it," Tina promised. "' Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them',"
"I bet it's going to be very exciting," Tom said confidently.
"Does Leta Lestrange like to read?" Tina asked.
"Who?" Newt asked.
"The girl whose picture you carry,"
"Who's Leta Lestrange?" Tom asked curiously.
"Just some old school friend," Newt answered quickly. "Anyways Tina, I don't know what Leta likes these days because people change. I mean I've changed,"
"I think. Maybe a little," Tina chuckled.
I'll send you a copy of my book if I may.
I'd like that," she said.
Newt noticed that there was no one else but them on the docks. It was time to go. "Well, this is goodbye, Tina," he reached over a tucked a strand of hair behind her ear. "You ready Tom?"
Tom nodded. He gave Tina a surprise hug and she awkwardly hugged him back. He slowly let go of the sweet woman and took Newt's hand. They walked away when Newt suddenly pulled them back to Tina. "I'm so sorry. How would you feel if I gave you your copy in person?"
"I'd like that. Very much," she said.
Newt was about to speak again when a man on the boat whistled to them. This was their last chance to get on the ship or it would leave. "Goodbye for now Tina," he said solemnly. He gently took Tom's hand and they walked up on the gangplank onto the ship. They waved to Tina before they disappeared inside. They walked up the stairs to the top deck and went outside to the rails. They saw the skylights of New York reaching up to touch the morning sky. Though it was cloudy, lightly stretched across the sea. It meant the start of something new. They sat down on a bench and Tom shifted closer to his dad.
"You and Tina look really happy together," he said. "You two just…reminded me of my birth parents. Do you like her?"
Newt looked awkward. He tried to hide his puffy cheeks. "Let's see if we can see her on the dock," They went over to the railing and their enjoyment, they saw her standing below with a cheesy grin waving up to them. The ship horn honked and they felt the large sea vessel moving beneath them. They waved to Tina as they were carried towards the Statue of Liberty. Still keeping their eyes stuck on Tina, they watched as she took one last outward glance at them before walking away.
Newt smiled sadly. Tom smirked but didn't say anything. They were quiet as the ship sailed across towards the open sea. They saw Liberty Island and Tom glanced enchantingly at the tall green lady with the pointed crown and the torch. In about twenty minutes, they had reached open water and New York was becoming a small city far behind them. The pair stood at the rear, feeling the wind blowing in their hair as their eyes were settled on the endless outstretch of water just beyond the horizon.
Tom outstretched his arm and closed his eyes. As he felt the cool air flow over his face, Newt smiled affectionately at his new boy. He was feeling true freedom for the first time in his childhood. Feeling chilly they went back inside and were given the key to their cabin. They entered cabin 5 on the second floor. It was a rather small room with a metal bunk bed and a small wardrobe.
"Good thing we have all the space in here," Newt patted his suitcase. He placed it down on the bed and sat down next to it. Tom sat in the chair in front of the small desk. "You okay?"
"I'm just so glad we left New York," his boy confessed numbly.
"You know none of us could move against MACUSA," Newt said.
"I know," Tom said. "But it wasn't right what they did," he cried a bit.
"No," Newt stood up, moved beside him and patted his back. "It wasn't,"
Getting tearful again, Tom hugged him and Newt embraced him warmly. "How could they do that to him?"
"They act out of fear all the time. It isn't right what they do. I'm sorry we couldn't save Credence,"
"What about the wizarding government in Britain? What if they found out about me…"
"Tom…you're not dangerous. You're safe now. No one will ever threaten you again. I promise you that I'm going to take care of you," Newt let go and he bent in front of his son. "But if I'm going to do that, I need to promise me you'll do exactly what I say. Even if you disagree with it,"
Tom nodded. "You sure I can control my magic?"
"You will. You haven't quite developed an Obscurus yet. So you're not a danger. But we must keep you hidden for a while when we return. Do you understand?"
Tom nodded again. "I'm ready,"
Newt smiled proudly. "You're a brave young man Tom Edwards," he cradled his cheeks. "I have a feeling that next year you'll make a great student at Hogwarts School," he held him close.
"Is that the school you went to?"
Newt nodded. Tom smiled. Newt hugged him properly this time. He then went back over to the case, untied the rope binding, and opened it. "You ready to see our creature?"
The way he said 'our' made Tom feel more alive than ever. Not only did he have a new father, but he also now had all the friends in the world. Even if they were just fantastic beasts. Bobo on his shoulder squeezed and with his lips forming a wide smile, he said, 'Yes'.
And so that's how Newt became my dad. He cared for me unconditionally. He took me back to England. I couldn't believe how relieved I was to be back home where I belonged. But I knew life would never be the same again. Although I had lost both my biological parents and a brother, I knew that I would never feel alone again. I had a new dad and all my new creature friends. It was at this moment I realised I wanted to be a Magizoologist just like him. Even if he was the only one, he taught me it was important to take care of magical creatures because they were just like us fellow wizards. They had souls. They had instincts. And a capacity to protect those they deemed trustworthy and pure-hearted. But the day that I became the Magizoologist's son, was the day that my adventures were only just beginning.
Thirty Years ago:
Albus Dumbledore stood in front of the window of the room where his sister's portrait stood. He couldn't bear to look at it. Not without remembering that horrible night she had died. He was lonely, heartbroken. He missed his sister. He missed his lover Gellert Grindelwald who had walked out on him to conquer the world many years ago. His brother Aberforth was the only family he had left. And he never talked to him very much. He resented him entirely for what happened to their sister. And that made the pain of having very little family left all the worse.
He tearfully turned his eyes away from the portrait and stared unrequitedly out at the window. He felt like he had nothing in his life. No family. No love. Nothing worth fighting for. Now he loved his friends at Hogwarts and enjoyed being a teacher for Defence against the Dark Arts, nothing could heal the pail carving a dark dent in his heart. He pressed his hand to his chest, imaging Grindelwald's hand in place. He always used to say that nothing was worth more to him than Dumbledore but now it was conquering the world that had become his ambition. And he would never give it up. Not even for the wizard he once loved.
Though his eyes were half-shut, Dumbledore saw a strange glow in the snowy fields beyond the village. It looked like it was descending towards the whiteness below. He watched as it disappeared beyond the humps of soft snow. He flung on his coat, took his wand, and approached the fields. He walked carefully across the snow, keeping his wand out. He saw nothing. But then he heard low crying. A child's crying. He walked to the tip of a mound and to his shock, he saw a crying infant wrapped in red in a basket. It was all alone. Scared.
"Oh, you poor thing," he sympathised genuflecting. "There. There. It's all right," he lifted the baby out of the basket. "Don't cry," the baby continued to cry so Dumbledore rocked her gently. The infant calmed down and when her little eyes met Dumbledore's, she calmed down. She giggled a little. "Looks like you're going to need somewhere to stay," he said gently. He turned around and carried the child back to his house out of the cold. And for the first in years, he began to feel something filling the hole in his heart.
It had been over two weeks since Newt and Tom left New York City, America. And they were now arriving at the port of England. It had been very hard for Tom, losing his brother, being threatened by short-minded disdainful wizards from the American Wizarding Community, and almost getting killed by the same wizard who killed his parents….
As he recovered from such awful trauma, he had his new father Newt Scamander and all his new animal friends to hang onto. Every night he would go down into his new daddy's suitcase and spend quality time with all the creatures, forming powerful bonds with them like they were friends he hadn't met in such a long time. Bobo his Bowtruckle and the baby Graphorn whom he named Gilly especially were his favourite, his best friends.
Newt stood outside the shed watching Tom socialise with a large number of their animal friends. Even the Erumpent whom he had taken time to get used to her, regarding she nearly trampled him back in Central Park. But he was long past that now. His peace was interrupted by the loud honk of the ship's horn through the case lid upstairs. It meant they had arrived.
"Tom!" Newt called. "We've here!"
"Sorry guys," Tom apologised. "I've got to go," He tried to walk over to his dad but Gilly grabbed his hand with his tentacles. "Don't worry Gilly…I'll be back soon. Promise," Gilly sadly let him go and Tom climbed up after his father up the ladder and out of the case back into the room. They packed up their items and after leaving their cabin merged in the overcrowding corridors as passengers were desperate to get off the ship. Some were still vomiting. Some were very dizzy that they nearly fell off the boat and into the water. Some were very cranky from being stuck inside their cabins most days because of storms and cold chilly days.
Tom and Newt managed to get off the boat. Tom looked around, feeling excited to be back in England after so long. Feeling English ground below his feet made him thrilled but rather frightened too. Had it changed since he and his friends left? Would the wizarding community find him out? Seeing how nervous he was, Newt held his hand tightly. "It's gonna be all right Tom,"
"Where do you live dad?"
"In London,"
"That's where I lived," Tom dug into his own suitcase and pulled out a union jack postcard from London.
"Then you'll feel at home in no time," he said. "Just wait until you see the other creatures,"
Tom gasped ecstatically. "You've got more?"
"Yes. In my basement,"
"Who looks after them?"
"You'll meet one of my assistants soon enough,"
"And what does your other assistant do?"
"I call her a very close friend. She's actually meeting us here,"
"And she's here right now," a new voice surprised them. Standing in front of them was a beautiful young woman with long dark hair in waves. She wore red velvet robes with a gorgeous hat, dark boots, and matching gloves. "It's so lovely to have you back Newt," She walked over and gave Newt a warm hug which he returned.
"It's good to see you too Lorna," Newt greeted. His heartfelt tone made Tom frown a bit. Was he cheating on Tina?
Lorna looked down and glanced welcomingly at Tom. "I see you've brought back a friend. Hello,"
Tom was anxious. He hid a bit behind his dad.
"It's all right Tom," Newt promised. "She won't hurt you. She's very kind,"
Tom saw the kindness and generosity in the woman's eyes. He stepped out so she could see her. "Whom might you be?" she asked.
Tom pursed his lips. "Tom Edwards,"
"He's my new son," Newt said proudly.
"Aww…" Lorna breathed. "That's so lovely of you Newt. It makes me happy to see you like that,"
"Who are you?" Tom asked.
"I'm Lorna Dumbledore," she introduced herself. "It's so lovely to meet you, Tom," she offered a hand and Tom slowly shook it. "Where did you find him Newt?"
"In New York,"
"How was the trip to Arizona?"
"I let out Frank in New York. It's quite a long story," he said.
"And one which I should hear later," Lorna said. "Let's get you two to London," she guided them over to a private spot behind a public bathroom. "I warn you you're gonna feel a bit queasy Tom,"
"Wait a minute. Are we gonna…" Tom remembered the giddy feelings in his stomach every time his dad teleported them both. "No. Please no,"
"It'll be very quick Tom. It's the fastest way of travel and we won't have to get caught by Ministry people," Newt said. Noticing the confused expression on Lorna's face, he quickly said, "I'll explain later,"
"It'll be fine Tom. I promise," Lorna held out her hand. Tom gulped, held his breath, and took it. Then he felt his whole world spinning and turning like back in New York. Feeling his hands slip out of Lorna and Newt's, he felt himself smash his face and stomach against a wooden surface.
"Are you all right Tom?" Newt helped him up gently.
Tom nearly vomited but he swallowed his lunch. "I just threw up in my mouth,"
"Don't worry. You'll get the hang of it eventually," Lorna assured.
After taking a moment to relax his mind and body, Tom glanced around and he found himself in a large white front room.
"This is your new home," Newt smiled. "We're in London,"
"Wow," Tom breathed. "This is so cool," He glanced around at the nice furniture, the nice pictures, and then he saw a wooden door leading down to the basement which was his dad kept all his other creatures. Newt knew how excited he was to be meeting them.
"Looks like Tom's excited," Lorna remarked. "Why don't we sit down and you two can tell me everything?"
"Sure. Once we let Tom see the creatures," Newt said. He didn't want to keep Tom waiting.
Right after he said that the basement door burst open and Tom jumped. A woman with fuzzy orange hair in buns wearing an apron and gloves came pounding out of the basement. "Oh my god. It's so good to see you again Newt,"
"Hello Bunty," said Newt.
Bunty noticed Tom and how scared he was. "Sorry kid. I…didn't mean to scare you,"
"Bunty, this is my new son Tom," Newt introduced.
Bunty glimpsed the boy. "He's very handsome. Name's Bunty," she offered a hand and Tom shook it.
"Bunty, could you show Tom the basement of creatures please?" Newt requested. "Lorna and I need to discuss some things,"
"Of course. You coming down?" she showed Tom to the basement.
"Thanks," he said. He turned to his dad.
"I'll be down in a bit," he said. He watched Bunty and his son disappear down the stairs then with a wave of his wand, tea was prepared and then magically levitated to the table. He and Lorna sat down and he told his tale.
So Newt and Tom are back in England. And Dumbledore has a daughter. Felt like he deserves love after losing his sister and his lover walking out on him to conquer the world. Please send reviews. I hope you all are enjoying this.
