I feel like this was quite stilted, but it's tough to write an interaction like this and get everyone to be as you'd expect them.
They shortly reached the Hokage Tower, and walked up the stairs with Inu, before arriving at the door to the Hokage's Office. Knocking on the door, Inu and the 'brothers' heard a "Come in" which made Naruto's chest restrict as he gathered himself to see the man he loved as a grandfather after only having seen him as an Edo-Tensei since he was thirteen. Opening the door, the ANBU led them in before disappearing, with Naruto and Sasuke realising that he had repositioned himself in the ceiling above the Hokage, no doubt something he had been ordered to do in the unique circumstances. With the door closing behind them, they took the time to quickly study the Hokage, and while he looked slightly younger, with fewer sunspots than they were used to seeing, they could see the power that radiated off of him. Absently, Naruto noticed how tired he looked, and wondered why he could never see it previously. The man had previously been on a pedestal so high up that Naruto could only look upon him with reverence and aspire to be like him. Now Naruto could see how the impact of losing his successor had impacted him, and how the lines on his face spoke of the pressure on his shoulders.
It was difficult for Sasuke to keep a straight face around this man. He knew that Hiruzen had never wanted the massacre to occur, but nevertheless, he had failed to reign in Danzo and had not been thorough enough in his attempts to help the situation. All the same, he knew he had to present a united front with Naruto here, and cannot allow his emotions to get the best of him.
Hiruzen was filled with trepidation, and he couldn't blame himself for it. After an ANBU had appeared and told him that two redheads at the gate claimed to be Uzumaki's and wished for refuge here, he immediately sent Inu there to retrieve them, he wouldn't settle for anyone but the best in this situation, and Inu certainly was. Provided they were not a danger to Konoha, he would be happy to welcome them in of course, and whether or not he had a Yamanaka survey their minds in T&I would depend on how this conversation would go. Setting that aside, Hiruzen smiled at the two men, who he could appraise looked just like Uzumaki. "I welcome you to Konoha, Haru and Indra, was it?" Receiving a pair of nods, he continues, "Could you please tell me your story, and how it came to be that you seek refuge in Konoha now despite your ages and obvious skills?"
Smirking internally, he noticed a slight widening of the eyes of both men, after revealing that he knew they were skilled shinobi. Of course, he couldn't estimate exactly, but they carry an aura of strength that is certainly hard to come by.
One of the boys, with an angular set to his face the other, didn't have, spoke up. "We'd be happy to Hokage-Sama, however, due to the sensitive nature of what we have to say, would you mind giving us some privacy?"
Hiruzen raised an eyebrow and kept himself on guard. "Privacy of what nature?"
The other 'Uzumaki' spoke up, "Not much, we'd just like a privacy seal around the room, and while it may be too much to ask, all the ANBU bar the one who brought us here to leave the room"
Now Hiruzen was shocked, and the incredulity of the multiple ANBU in the ceiling merely added to this. Does he know how unreasonable that request is, yet still asks?
However… If he were to grant this, he could potentially stand to add two obviously skilled Uzumaki to the roster, which would benefit the village greatly. Besides, Hiruzen was not so insecure in his own strength that he would be unhappy having both himself and his best ANBU in the same room as these two privately.
"Very well, you'll have your request." Ignoring the consternation and concern of the other ANBU in the room, he added, "Now" layered with a slight amount of intent, which was more than enough to get the ANBU in the ceiling leaving as soon as they could. Activating the privacy seal he had under his desk, he then sat back and awaited the story.
Indra spoke
"Hokage-Sama, you may not believe us, but I reassure you that this is the absolute truth. We've sent ourselves from fifteen years in the future to prevent a war which will wipe out all life as we know it"
Suspending his disbelief, and attempting to keep a level head he turned to the one he knew to be 'Indra', and asked in an even turn, "How do you expect me to believe that, you must have proof surely, after all that is a rather bold claim to make"
The one he knew to be Haru now spoke
"We are currently wearing a henge which cannot be detected, similar to the one that Tsunade wears, and if we take it off, it will become quite hard to refute our claims"
As if sharing a thought, 'Haru' and 'Indra' both changed into different people in front of Hiruzen.
Hiruzen recognised, one of them immediately albeit looking vastly different from how he knew them, and his breath caught in his throat in an attempt to gain his bearings.
"Naruto-kun?"
"Hey Jiji, it's been a while since I've seen you, and I know you haven't formally introduced yourself to me yet if I'm the age I think I am at this point, but I know you very well myself"
Hiruzen checked for a henge, there wasn't one. He signaled for Inu to check for one via chakra pulse, and received a negative from him too. Still, Hiruzen wasn't Hokage for nothing, so he regained his composure.
"I see, so if you're Naruto, I'm guessing the man next to you is young Sasuke, Fugaku's youngest, correct?"
At this, he signaled for Inu to drop down from the ceiling, understanding that this conversation called for as much openness as the situation allowed.
The one he now knew to be Sasuke nodded his head in the affirmative and said, "That's right, and the reason why we asked Inu to stay is due to the fact that he is directly connected to the events that take place over the coming years."
"That, and he was our Jonin-Sensei," said Naruto, stunning the room into even more silence than before.
Sasuke turned to Naruto and pinned him with a glare that would have inflicted Amaterasu upon him if Sasuke turned his Sharingan on.
Hiruzen, in a partial attempt to steer the conversation in the right direction, and partially to give poor Inu a reprieve, who was seemingly having a crisis next to him, cleared his throat and asked, "Is there any proof you can give us outside of these identities? Which we can hardly verify easily you understand"
Conceding the point, Naruto spoke up. "How about the fact that Naruto Uzumaki is the Jinchuuriki of the Kyuubi, and his parents were Minato Namikaze and Kushina Uzumaki?"
Inu stiffened next to Hiruzen.
"How about that the man standing next to you is Kakashi Hatake, who was given his famous Sharingan by his teammate Obito Uchiha at the Kannabi Bridge mission?"
Sasuke spoke next. "How about the fact that ROOT is being operated by Danzo Shimura, and that you both know about his attempted experiments to gain the Mokuton Kekkei Genkai, which succeeded with a boy who is now called Tenzo, despite the deaths of many others?"
Hiruzen sighed and motioned for Kakashi to take his mask off, knowing it was just a formality at this point, and not one worth having. Having done so, it became all the more obvious how shaken Kakashi was by this experience, despite attempting to remain stoic, it was becoming harder and harder for him.
"If you want, we'd be happy to have Inoichi Yamanaka mind-walk for proof, as long as it would stay between himself and those already in this room," said Naruto.
That was something Hiruzen would be happy to oblige, it would make confirming this a matter of ease compared to any other rigmarole they may have to go through. "Kakashi put your mask back on and go fetch Inoichi for us, bring him immediately."
Nodding in the affirmative, Kakashi, now temporarily Inu again went to go fetch the mind walker.
Now it was a matter of waiting, in which a few minutes of silence went by. There was no point in talking yet when they'd be able to speak productively once Inoichi was here.
After a knock sounded on the door, and the two men quickly reapplied their henge, Hiruzen invited Inoichi and Inu back in.
"Hokage-Sama, you wished to see me?" asked Inoichi, looking particularly surprised when Inu took his mask off in front of the two strangers in the office.
He was even more surprised when the two strangers took off their henge, and when the Hokage explained the situation.
"Ah, I see. Well, to make this easier for us, I only need to mind walk with one person, so which of you would you rather I do it to?"
'Naruto' spoke up. "It'd be easier for it to be me, but you may be a bit surprised once you get there, given what's in the seal."
"In the seal?"
"Have you forgotten what Naruto Uzumaki is known as in this village?"
Ah. No, he forgot for a second, that was silly of him. Given the minute flinch of the Hokage, it seems he too forgot. The man in front of him is claiming to be the Jinchuuriki of the Kyuubi, which will be proven either way once Inoichi walks his mind. "Ah, I see, well let's get situated then please."
Naruto sat down in a chair in front of the Hokage's desk, and Inoichi performed the jutsu.
Five minutes of silence passed for those not involved in the jutsu, and when Inoichi finally broke it panting and struggling to breathe, everyone was immediately tensing and ready for battle. He put a quick stop to this, however. "He's telling the truth; he really is Naruto."
Hiruzen narrowed his eyes. "What did you see Inoichi?"
"I saw a summary of his life if you will, everything that he's been through, and I've seen parts of his childhood that only he himself could know about, as unbelievable as it seems. I also spoke to the Kyuubi."
That put Hiruzen and Kakashi on guard like nothing before. Kakashi wasn't even hiding the twitch he had towards his kunai holster.
Inoichi was quick to calm his Hokage, "No need to worry Hokage-Sama, he was quite amicable, and has provided evidence that he was not responsible for the attack three years ago".
Kakashi, for the first time in the conversation, spoke up rather indignantly. "How could it not be responsible? We saw it attacking with our own eyes! To imply otherwise is ridiculous".
Naruto realized that he had to step in here, to prevent any misunderstandings. "What Inoichi meant, is that Kurama was not in his right mind when he attacked the village. He was being controlled by someone my father fought that night, and given the choice, he would have run from the village after being freed from the seal".
This caused the gears in Hiruzen's head to start turning, as he knew that the only way to manipulate the Kyuubi was to utilize the Sharingan, something that Danzo had brought up the night of the attack too. As such, he enquired. "Did the attacker use the Sharingan? That's the only known way of directly controlling the Kyuubi, rather than restraining it".
Naruto knew this is where things got sensitive, and as such gave the floor to Sasuke to say his piece. "The Kyuubi, or Kurama, as is his name, was controlled by a masked rogue Uchiha who goes by the name of 'Madara', which is not to say that he is Madara, but he is arguably as large a danger as if he was Madara himself. The Yondaime knew this, and as such, after fighting him, sealed Kurama into his baby, knowing full well that the man would come back again, and that Naruto would need that power to stop him".
Kakashi gaped. He had not expected that to be the truth behind that night. He had always harbored suspicions about that night, as his instincts had screamed at him to 'look underneath the underneath, yet he left it be, knowing that there was no evidence that he would be able to find. He was also righteously angry and wanted nothing more than to tear the perpetrator of that night to bloody shreds.
"I assume you're going after him then? If he's that large a danger?"
Naruto turned to Kakashi. A grim line formed on his face. "I'm afraid he's only one piece of the puzzle. An important one, but only a piece. I suppose we should tell the whole story, for proper context".
So, they told a heavily redacted version of what happened. They only delved into what happened in the year or so leading up to the war. Neither of them was confident that Hiruzen would be able to sit on all the immediate knowledge that they could have given him, especially regarding the Kumo negotiations. Naruto could sense a chakra that could only be described as a double of Hiashi Hyuga's, indicating that the incident had not yet occurred in which Neji would lose his father. They omitted unnecessary things, such as the fact that Sasuke betrayed the village, (that would only sew confusion) and they certainly didn't mention the true identity of the rogue Uchiha. That wasn't a can of worms they were opening any time soon with Kakashi. By the end of the story, all the other occupants of the room looked stupefied, which wasn't something Naruto nor Sasuke could blame them for. After a minute of silence, Hiruzen cleared his throat, directing attention to himself.
"Considering everything we just heard, I believe we need to rely on the two of you. Naruto, Sasuke, I'll make sure to clear you as Jonin of the village under your aliases. Henceforth you'll both be referred to by the names you chose even during conversations like these. I'll set you two up with an apartment in the village too. Is there anything else you wish to discuss before we leave today?"
Sasuke pulled himself taut. Now was the best possible time. "Yes, there is. Do not under any circumstances talk to Danzo about this, and do not let him pull any moves on you. If he does anything, we need to hear about it. We told you about the massacre, and controlling Danzo is key to preventing it."
Hiruzen had been disappointed to hear Danzo had done so many terrible things and had been horrified to hear about what modifications he had done to his body with the Sharingan and the First Hokage's cells. Considering everything he had heard; he had no choice but to comply with Sasuke here.
"That's absolutely fine Sasuke, nothing that we've spoken of will leave this room, and I'll make sure to notify you should Danzo attempt anything"
He then turned to Inoichi, pinning him with his gaze.
"I trust you not to say anything Inoichi, this is incredibly sensitive and cannot be allowed to be revealed to anyone else. Do you understand?"
Inoichi replied immediately and without hesitation. "Hai, Hokage-Sama"
With that, the tension bled out of the room.
"Kakashi, please escort our two new Jonin around the village until we have an apartment prepared for them both. I'm sure they'd benefit from both the pretense and being able to see the village they've done so much to protect"
With that, Kakashi disappeared one moment and reappeared the next in his Jonin attire, complete with the eye-smile Naruto and Sasuke remembered so well.
Reapplying their henge, Naruto and Sasuke followed Kakashi out of the room once the privacy seal was removed, with Inoichi leaving right after them. Bidding their goodbyes to Inoichi, they followed Kakashi out of the Hokage tower, and out onto the street below, where the bustle of people was starting to lessen with the coming of the late afternoon.
Kakashi was feeling a horrible mixture of emotions today. He really just wanted to sleep, but he had to show the two 'Uzumaki' around the village first, so he simply started wandering around as he always did. He quickly found that he was being flanked on both sides by 'Haru' and 'Indra', who were walking about one and a half steps behind his own. He felt odd around them both, as he had since he first met them. Kakashi wasn't a sensor, but for some reason, he felt what he could only assume to be Haru's chakra. It was serene and yet full of passion simultaneously, and he felt it reach out to him, and comfort him simply by being in its vicinity. He couldn't say he felt the same about Indra, yet he didn't feel threatened by him either. He suspected, that if they had in fact chosen to not mention their true identities at all, he'd still trust them as much as he does now. Not to say he trusted them a great deal by any means, but for Kakashi, being able to turn your back to someone indicated a certain level of trust, as it did for all paranoid ANBU operatives.
Haru spoke up next to him, in a quiet voice. "Thank you for looking out for me when I was younger".
Seeing Kakashi's raised eyebrow, he clarified.
"During the war, you told me that you used to try and get guard shifts for me, so you could keep your promise to dad. It means a lot to me, I know how hard you're trying"
That sent Kakashi screeching to a mental halt. Haru was glad? He was happy that he'd left him alone for years, only to meet him when he was a Genin? Kakashi was a failure, he had always failed to protect those he cared for, and being Naruto's ANBU guard is the closest he can get to Naruto without endangering him. (Not that he would be allowed to go near him anyway, what with the laws in place, though he suspected that would change soon)
He was incredibly interested in these two. For the first time in years, he felt the urge to socially interact, as opposed to run away. That scared him.
"Maa, I'm not sure what you mean, I just do my job like anyone else"
"I think we all know it's not that simple Kakashi," said Indra from his other side.
As they entered a market street, marking the end of their private conversation, Kakashi was given an invitation.
"We'll have to invite you around for some dinner now and then Kakashi. I'd be interested in going on some missions with you too, given your reputation"
Kakashi knew that sentence for what it was. Haru was intending on making sure Kakashi socialized with them, and if Indra's grunt of affirmation was anything to go by, it was a mutual agreement.
Kakashi was in trouble now, and he wasn't sure he'd be able to fight it off. Wasn't sure if he wanted to.
