"Let's go somewhere else to talk. It'll be nice to catch up." Kisame said at a conversational volume, his tone light and friendly as he pushed the compliant hacker to his feet and addressed Kanone with the suggestion. Kanone smiled, nodding, and the three left the café, Kisame never releasing Hiroshume from his grip.
The three males walked calmly through the crowded streets. The day was chilly and the wind bit sharply at their faces as they walked. The smell of winter was heavy in the air. Kisame still had his hand clamped onto Hiroshume's shoulder, his arm resting on the hacker's backpack. Kanone walked calmly on the other side of Hiroshume, a content, albeit slightly amused, look on his face. Hiroshume walked calmly between them. Surprisingly, his expression seemed rather calm, almost to the point of boredom, and he walked without attempting to escape in any way save trying to shrug off Kisame's iron grip.
As they walked, Kisame kept up a steady conversation, forcing Hiroshume to participate so that the public would not suspect the danger that the young hacker had found himself in.
"So you're the guy that Eyes had contact me?" The black-haired teen questioned at one point, his tone light for the public, but conveying to Hiroshume that answering quickly and curtly would be the best choice. Hiroshume nodded. "That is correct. Sorry we didn't have the opportunity to meet officially yesterday." Hiroshume said with a shrug, attempting to push Kisame's hand away with his own hand before giving up on the pointless endeavor and placing his hands in his jacket pockets to keep them warm.
"That's alright. I'm sure we'll have time to get properly acquainted later, especially if Eyes intends to continue keeping company with you." Kisame said with a cheerful smile, tightening his grip on Hiroshume's shoulder as the hacker attempted to remove it. He smirked when Hiroshume gave up.
"Yes, I'm sure we will. However, I doubt I'll be seeing much of Eyes on campus. As long as he is with his associates, then there's no reason for me to stay close." Hiroshume replied. Kanone gave him a quizzical look.
"Why is that? I'd assume you would want to be around him at school. You are his friend, correct?" He questioned. Kisame nodded in agreement with Kanone's question. Hiroshume looked up at the sky for a moment, contemplating the question before answering, as it hadn't been Kisame who had asked.
"I suppose friends is the best way to put it, although I wouldn't necessarily classify our relationship by the normal definition of 'friend'." He said, shrugging again and returning his gaze to the ground ahead of them.
"What would you call it, then?" Kisame asked, having nothing better to do than continue the conversation until they reached their destination.
"Friends is a fine title for it." Hiroshume replied quickly, before continuing a moment later. "However, it's more of a mutual agreement that we have. I help him and he alleviates my boredom. Certainly a friendship exists within that relationship, but our agreement is really the main thing. I like Eyes, don't get me wrong, but I'm not sure that the feeling is mutual with him." He finished, referencing Eyes cold attitude with his final words. The two killers nodded and Kisame shoved Hiroshume abruptly down a thin side street that led to an empty pier, nearly causing the hacker to fall with the sudden direction change.
Upon arrival, Kisame released Hiroshume from his grip and pushed him forward, causing the teen to stagger a few steps before regaining his balance. He turned to face the two murderers. Kisame now stood next to Kanone, his arms crossed over his chest, a neutral expression on his face. Kanone stood with a slightly kinder expression on his face, his hands in the pockets of his long grey coat. He had set his luggage down on the ground beside him.
Hiroshume watched them for a moment, rubbing his sore shoulder, before pulling his phone out of his pocket and glancing at it before looking around the area.
"This place is nice; lousy cellphone signal, though. So, why did you bring me here? I highly doubt it was to show me the view. I don't like being disconnected so can we finish whatever business you have with me quickly?" He questioned, returning the phone to his pocket. Kisame smirked and Kanone gave a slight laughed.
"You were the one who wanted to talk to me." Kanone replied. "You weren't finished with what you came to say, so you may speak first." He finished. Kisame nodded, catching Hiroshume's attention. Feeling that Kisame was a greater threat at the moment, he held eye contact with Kisame as he spoke.
"All I really wanted to tell Kanone Hilbert was that my services are available to him if they are needed. I've given the same offer to Eyes in the past but his requests have been rather boring as of late." He said, breaking eye contact and walking back and forth at the edge of the pier with his cellphone in his hand once more, elevated in front of and above himself in an attempt to find signal. "Being that both he and his acquaintances have been so eager for you to arrive in Japan," he said, glancing over at Kanone and pausing in his pacing. "I thought you would be the best person to make the offer to. I had intended to make the offer to Hoshagi at school tomorrow as well, but he has saved me the trouble by coming along today." He replied, lowering his phone in acceptance of the fact that his search for signal was futile. Kisame and Kanone glanced at each other before Kisame frowned and spoke, resting his hands in his coat pockets.
"I don't know what you're hoping to get involved with, but it's none of your business. You have no place in our affairs. If Eyes doesn't answer when you ask, it's because it's not something that you need to know. You're not involved. Stop trying to be." He said calmly. He didn't bother denying that something was going on. To do so would have been pointless. There was no reason that Eyes would have returned to Japan in the way that he had if something wasn't happening. Kisame knew Hiroshume was smart enough to know that.
Hiroshume stood a few feet away from Kanone and Kisame, listening to what the 'Savage gun' was saying. A dull expression marked his face. He was silent for a moment once Kisame finished speaking before slipping his phone from his pocket again and tossing it at Kisame. Kisame caught it without difficulty and looked with slight confusion at Hiroshume. Knowing what the hacker was intending, Kanone took the phone from Kisame and pulled up the email that he had been shown earlier. As Kisame was reading the message, Hiroshume turned his back on the two Blade Children and looked out over the water, his hands once again resting lazily in his pants pockets.
"Regardless of whether you both, or Eyes, wants me involved, a third party has already made it clear that I am indeed involved. It would be much easier for me if one of you would tell me just what it is I've been involved in, but I doubt that any of you will be inclined to do so." He turned and walked over to Kisame and Kanone, taking the phone from Kisame's hand, who had taken the phone from Kanone when the message had been presented to him. The golden eyed teen's expression had darkened after he had read the message and seen the sender.
"I will eventually find out what game all of you are playing. This game sounds like it's going to be interesting and that's more than enough reason for me to play." He glanced back at the two as he walked past them. "I'll stay on Eyes' side and my offer still remains to both of you. If you ever need a hacker, contact me." He said, as he walked back the way they had come, leaving Kisame and Kanone alone on the pier. Neither male tried to follow him. There was no need to. Eyes trusted the teen, so it was worth their time to leave him alone for the time being. The two standing alone on the pier knew that plenty of opportunities would arise at the academy where they could eliminate the hacker, should he become a threat to the Blade Children.
Once HIroshume was out of sight and the two were certain that he wasn't eavesdropping nearby, Kanone turned to Kisame.
"Well that was unexpected, wasn't it?" He said calmly. Kisame nodded.
"I was aware that Eyes had a clever friend who was setting things up for him, but I didn't realize just how dangerous an individual it was." The black-haired teen commented, looking off in the direction that Hiroshume had gone. Kanone frowned.
"So you noticed it too?" He questioned, having suspected his friend had noticed when Kisame didn't try to follow Hiroshume. Again Kisame nodded.
"Whether he is a threat to the Blade Children or not, he is definitely a dangerous human being. You can see it in his eyes. There's a coldness in him. He's definitely someone we should keep an eye on as long as Eyes keeps company with him."
Kanone nodded in agreement, looking out over the water once more. Kisame joined his gaze and the two stood silently watching the water, each feeling the eyes upon them.
oOoOoOoOo
Cold, hard eyes watched the two teens standing on the pier. As Hiroshume left the pier, cross-hairs aligned on Kisame's head at the same moment the Blade Child's eyes locked onto those behind the scope, making the shooter fully aware of the fact that Kisame knew exactly where the shooter was perched. Clenching his teeth, the shooter prepared to fire, but as he began to depress the trigger he watched with horror as Kisame produced a gun of his own, aiming and firing faster than the Hunter could depress the trigger and return fire. Given the distance the hunter was at, the bullet did not follow its intended course, and instead of shattering the window and hitting where Kisame assumed the sniper's head would have been, it shattered the window and buried itself into the outer side of the Hunter's shoulder. Gasping in pain and surprise, the Hunter lurched back, dropping the sniper rifle in his movements. He collapsed to the floor, clasping his hand over the wound as his mind tried to grasp what had happened moments ago. Seconds after the man's collapse, three other men were at his side, inquiring whether he was alright or not. They fell silent and turned to look when they heard someone approaching them.
A second Hunter, a female with bored eyes and a blank expression on her face stopped behind the Hunters huddled around the wounded man. "Up." She said curtly, her tone cold and hard as she walked quickly over to the window, retrieved the sniper rifle, and turned to walk toward the door that led out of the small room where they currently were.
"You heard the lady." A second Hunter said as he slipped into the room behind her, his slimy voice carrying a mocking tone as he looked down on the injured man. "We're moving locations. Get up." He grabbed hold of the wounded man's good arm and pulled him to his feet. He pushed the man quickly toward the door and the others followed behind. The female waited by the door until the others had evacuated the room. As the second Hunter passed her she called out to him.
"Naoki." She said as she pointed ahead of the other hunters that had gathered on the outer stairway leading out of the building and down to the street. The Hunter, Naoki Sato, nodded and made his way quickly to the front of the group, leading them down to street level, searching for any signs of the two seasoned killers. A third Hunter came up alongside the female as they hurried down the stairs, emerging from amid the other Hunters trying to escape. "Are we still going to kill them?" He questioned as he matched pace with her. She nodded and pointed to where Naoki was searching for the now missing Blade Children. "Help him." She commanded, her voice monotone. He nodded and quickly left her side to take his place next to Naoki.
As he approached the second Hunter, a gunshot rang through the air, followed by a scream and the collapse of the injured Hunter and one of the Hunters in the back middle of the group.
"Akito!" Naoki called as he took aim in the direction the shot had come from, briefly catching sight of Kisame before he slipped out of sight and range of Naoki's shot. Cursing, he looked over at the third Hunter, Akito Soichi, who was also trying to get a lock on the 'Savage Gun'. A cry of panic brought their attention back to the group of Hunters that surrounded them.
"They're dead!" One of the Hunters exclaimed in horror. The others looked in anger in the direction Kisame's shot had come from.
"Keep moving. Retreat!" The female ordered. Naoki and Akito began driving the Hunters forward, leaving the dead men behind. They continued forward until a second shot was heard as a bullet buried itself into another Hunter, claiming a third victim for the day. As the man fell dead, the group let anger take over and, disregarding the female Hunter's order to retreat, charged in the direction where Kisame had been seen.
"No! Get back here! We're retreating!" Akito yelled. The new recruits ignored him and continued forward. Akito was about to follow after them when a hand was felt on his shoulder.
"Retreat." The female Hunter said firmly as she turned and continued in the direction they had been heading. Akito lingered a moment more as he looked over at the group of Hunters nearing the awaiting Blade Children until Naoki grabbed his arm and pulled his after their leader.
oOoOoOoOo
Once the three were safely out of range of the battle, they turned to see the fate of the Hunters who had disobeyed orders. They could see the men struggling as the two Blade Children commenced their attack upon their pursuers.
"Well that's a shame. It's unfortunate to lose that many new recruits all at once." Naoki said, his snide tone preventing any possible sympathy from being suggested in his words. If anything, he sounded annoyed. Akito remained silent for a moment before turning to look at the female Hunter standing beside them.
"So what now, Yan?" He questioned. "We're going to lose a lot of people from this." He said regretfully as he watched the battle. The female Hunter, Yan Higurashi, nodded, her short, straight, black hair brushing against the sides of her face as she moved. "It's fine. We're going back." She said as she turned and walked away, not wanting to stick around until Kisame and Kanone were finished with the group of new Hunters. Shaking his head at Yan's indifference for the lives of the other men, Naoki grabbed Akito's arm and dragged him after the uncaring woman.
oOoOoOoOo
Hiroshume walked along into the crowded city streets later in the day, relieved that he was once again in an area that maintained cellphone reception. He didn't let it show, but he was relieved that he had escaped his encounter with Kisame and Kanone without injury. He had been quite concerned about what would happen when Kisame had led him out of the café. Shaking his head at the memory of the morning, he looked ahead once more and headed in the direction of Tsukiomi Academy.
The hacker arrived at the academy as the final bell was sounding. Not in the mood to be challenged for skipping the day's classes, he waited by the brick entrance that lead onto the school grounds. As he waited, students began to file out of the sizable institution. They passed him without a second glance and he, in turn, paid them no mind. He leaned against the entryway until his gaze fell on the white haired pianist and his surrounding acquaintances. At this point, Hiroshume pushed off of the wall and walked a short distance away from the school, knowing that Eyes would come that direction on his way home.
A few minutes passed before Hiroshume caught sight of Eyes approaching him. He waited until the pianist was about to pass him before falling into step beside him. Eyes looked questioningly at Hiroshume.
"Where have you been? You weren't in school at all today." He questioned out of curiosity. Hiroshume shrugged.
"I had a late night." The hacker replied, hoping that the pianist wouldn't pry any farther. It wasn't that he didn't want Eyes to know about the events of the morning, there just wasn't any need for him to know. Much to Hiroshume's delight, the apathetic teenager seemed to accept the cryptic answer and dismiss the issue, caring too little to bother pursuing it.
"So how was your day?" Hiroshume asked, assuring that the subject was changed from his activities earlier during the day. Eyes didn't respond, once again rejecting Hiroshume's attempt at conversation. The teen sighed and hung his head for a moment before casting a sidelong glance at the indolent celebrity. Eyes simply looked straight ahead as they walked. Hiroshume shook his head and looked up at the sky, placing his hands in his pants pockets.
"This very situation is why I prefer electronic communication." He mumbled softly. He glance away from the sky when he heard Eyes chuckle.
"Don't be absurd. We rarely had anything to say to each other when we communicated electronically either. Speaking face to face is not so different." The musician said simply, his tone rather light with masked amusement.
"You make a compelling argument." Hiroshume consented, shrugging. "So have you established a meeting time with your final associate or should I handle that?" He questioned. Eyes shook his head.
"Kanone will contact me when he is ready to meet. Until then there is no reason to contact him." Eyes replied, stopping at a cross-walk and waiting for the crossing signal to change. Hiroshume nodded.
"Alright. Is there anything you require of me for the time being?" Hiroshume questioned as the signal changed and the two started walking again. Eyes was silent for a few moments before shaking his head again.
"Nothing comes to mind at the moment. However, should I require something I'll contact you." He said, knowing the hacker was bored and looking for anything to pass the time.
The two continued on in silence. Nothing more was spoken between them until they reached the entrance to Eyes' building. At this point Hiroshume stopped, not intending to enter.
"Call me if you need anything. I'll meet you tomorrow morning." He said as he turned to leave. He was tired and fully intended to spend the rest of the evening asleep on his couch.
Eyes watched the hacker go before turning and walking into his building, leaving the street behind him.
oOoOoOoOo
Kisame and Kanone moved quickly along the pier, knowing the Hunters would be in close pursuit.
"Welcome back to Japan." Kisame said with a laugh, glancing to his left where Kanone was close behind him. Kanone laughed as well, welcoming the old thrill of fighting alongside Kisame. A series of shots echoed behind them and they turned quickly to face their pursuers.
"Ready?" Kisame asked as they hid around the corner of an alley that adjoined with a line of warehouses along the pier. Kanone nodded, slipping his knife from his pocket. They waited in silence, listening to the rushed footsteps approaching their location. As their pursuers neared, Kisame leaned around the corner and fired another round into the group, hitting a man in the second row of the group. The Hunter dropped to the ground with a bullet hole in his chest. The others stopped briefly, looking at the deceased man and checking for any signs of life. The hesitation allowed Kisame to kill another Hunter, leaving only four in the group and five victims in the near vicinity.
As the fifth man fell, Kanone reached over Kisame's shoulder and pushed the gun down so it was pointed at the ground. Kisame looked with slight irritation at his companion, guessing why the German teen had blocked his weapon. Kanone confirmed his suspicions when he spoke.
"Don't kill them if you don't have to. It's more trouble for the Hunters if they are left alive. " Kanone said as he stepped in front of Kisame and launched his knife into the Hunter group, now less than twelve feet from them. It impacted one of the Hunters in the shoulder, causing him to drop his gun. Kanone dashed into the group, causing the three other men to fire at him, shooting wildly as realization of their situation caused panic to numb their reason.
In the ensuing confusion, Kisame took the opportunity to cripple the remaining two Hunters, incapacitating their shoulders and causing them to drop their guns and collapse to their knees in pain. As they fell, Kanone retrieved his knife and the discarded guns before rejoined Kisame. Once he was beside his companion once more, the two quickly left the pier, not wanting to be around when the police arrived on the scene. As they departed the area, Kanone cast a glance at Kisame, mentally shaking his head at the cold pleasure he saw reflected in Kisame's smile.
Once they made it back to the street the two went their separate ways, offering a brief goodbye to one another. Kanone handed over the stolen weapons to Kisame and returned to the pier to retrieve his luggage and Kisame headed off in the direction of his apartment.
oOoOoOoOo
Music permeated the dim apartment. The evening rays of the setting sun bathed the large room in orange light, illuminating the young performer in the muted glow. The tune that filled the room was low and rich, pealing out in even, clear notes. The piece was a romantic composition, the third composition in Franz Liszt's Harmonies Poetiques et Religieuses, "Consolation." As he played through the slow, thoughtful piece, the pianist's mind drifted to the situation he and the other Blade Children were currently faced with. From what he had heard from Rio and Kousuke, there was definitely an increase in the Hunter threat making itself known throughout Japan. It was disconcerting to have the situation escalating so quickly.
As he played, allowing himself the rare moment of immersing himself in the music, it took several chimes of his cellphone ring before he noticed and paused in his playing.
Rising from the piano, he walked over to the small end table that stood beside the window and picked up his phone.
"Yes." He answered in his characteristically short manner, not bothering to check the number before answering.
"Hello Eyes. How have you been?" A familiar voice greeted on the other end of the line, coaxing the faintest hint of a smile briefly onto the pianist's lips.
"Kanone." He said.
"Could we meet? It'd be nice to see you again." Kanone said cheerfully. Before receiving an answer, Kanone gave Eyes the address of the small internet café he was currently at. Eyes nodded, vocalizing the motion with a slight hum before walking away from the window and retrieving his long coat from the closet.
"I'll be there shortly." He said. He could hear the smile in the other man's voice as he spoke.
"I'll see you then." The German teen said before Eyes ended the call.
oOoOoOoOo
It took the celebrity fifteen minutes to reach the location Kanone had specified. He walked quickly, his hands buried deep in his coat pockets and the collar of his coat turned up to act as some protection against the cold air. He spotted his friend standing near the entrance of the café, calmly watching the people passing by. He smiled and waved when he saw the musician watching him from across the street.
Eyes remained where he was, watching as his childhood friend retrieved his luggage trunk from the sidewalk and crossed the street to meet him. He allowed a smile to grace his face as his cold blue eyes met warm army green eyes.
"Hello Eyes." The amber haired man greeted when he reached the pianist.
It's good to see you again, Kanone." Eyes said softly, standing a moment with Kanone. "How have you been?" He questioned as he turned to walk back in the direction he had come. Kanone fell into step beside him.
As they walked, the two talked about trivial matters such as Eyes' exit from the music world and Kanone's trip to Japan. The two ended up stopping at the small café where Eyes had met Hiroshume a few days earlier. The two teens seated themselves at the same table in the back of the establishment and ordered tea in order to chase away some of the chill from the rapidly cooling temperatures. Once the drinks had arrived, Kanone and Eyes began to talk once again, Eyes being far more willing to talk with Kanone than he had been with Hiroshume.
"How are the others doing?" Kanone questioned, taking a sip of his tea. "I met Kisame earlier today and he seemed to be doing well." He said. Eyes nodded.
"The others seem to be doing well. They look out for each other." Eyes replied, taking a sip of his tea as well. "So you met Kisame already?" Eyes questioned.
"Yes I did. I ran into him when I was leaving the airport. We spent some of the afternoon together." Kanone answered. Eyes nodded, now having an explanation for Kisame's noticeable absence in school that day. He looked back at Kanone when the older teen spoke.
"How is Ryoko taking to your being back in Japan?" He asked, knowing the disdain the female held for the quiet performer. Eyes shook his head, signifying that his presence was displeasing to the strong-willed Blade Child in question. Kanone smiled and nodded. "I can't imagine she'll be much happier to see me tomorrow either." He commented, knowing that Ryoko carried strong animosity toward him for placing Kousuke in the hospital during his last trip to Japan. Kanone looked at Eyes' and smiled, earning a muted smile from the quiet celebrity.
"You'll definitely have a tough time here. It is your own fault, though." Eyes said, taking another sip of his tea. Kanone dropped his head and sighed, knowing Eyes was right. After a moment, he shrugged and raised his teacup to his lips once more.
"It'll be interesting to see what happens." He commented good-naturedly, speaking more to himself than Eyes. Eyes just smiled and took another sip of his tea, not saying a word.
oOoOoOoOo
It was another hour before the two boys made it back to Eyes' apartment. The sun was nearly set as they entered the spacious room and Kanone made his way over to the couch as Eyes lit a small lamp near the couch before walking briefly into the bedroom to discard his coat in the closet. When he returned, Kanone had set his luggage on the floor along the side of the couch and had laid his coat on top of it. He stood by the window waiting for Eyes to return. When he saw the pianist reenter the room he turned so he was facing Eyes.
The two seated themselves, one on the plush white sofa and the other on the black piano bench, continuing the conversation they had postponed when they had entered the apartment. They continued to talk about trivial matters for the next half hour before Kanone requested that Eyes play something for him, since they hadn't seen each other is so long. Eyes refused at first, not usually willing to play in front of Kanone, but after a bit of persuasion he relented. In a rare compliant mood, Eyes chose a piece he had never been willing to play for Kanone in the past.
Inhaling lightly, his hands hovered over the keys for a moment, the fingertips just barely touching the polished white keys. Releasing the delayed breath, he depressed the first key and began to play. The sound that rose from the ebony instrument was rich and powerful, filling the room with an emotionally charged sound that rarely came from the seasoned performer's playing. As the notes rang through the large room, a somber look came over Kanone's face, a soft smile of his lips.
The piece that was currently playing was another composition from Franz Liszt's Harmonies Poetiques et Religieuses and was one of the pianists personal favorite compositions; Benediction De Dieu Dans La Solitude. Over the years, Kanone had heard Eyes playing the melancholy composition when he was alone, but the pianist would always stop playing when he noticed that Kanone was there. For the usually cold performer to play the composition for Kanone now was very special and Kanone didn't take it for granted.
Nothing was said until Eyes had concluded the lengthy piece. Once he concluded the composition, drawing out the final notes with expert grace, he transitioned into a Bach composition instead of turning to face Kanone. Kanone allowed Eyes to play for a few minutes more before speaking.
"Have you and the others spoken about the current situation?" He asked.
"Yes." Eyes responded, continuing to practice. Kanone leaned forward on the couch, resting his elbows on his knees and lacing his fingers in front of his lips.
"This situation has become far more dangerous than I think either of us were aware." Kanone said quietly, causing Eyes to glance over his shoulder at his companion.
"Did something happen?" Eyes questioned, turning his attention back to the keys. Kanone shook his head, though the pianist couldn't see the action.
"Kisame and I met with a bit of trouble today." He replied. When Eyes didn't move to speak, Kanone continued. "The situation itself wasn't that abnormal, but the fact that they attacked outside in broad daylight is unusual for the Hunters. There was also something about the start of the attack that didn't seem normal for the Hunters. It was more calculated. If it had been anyone other than Kisame or myself, I think they would be dead." Kanone responded. He wasn't being pompous as he spoke about himself and Kisame, but simply stated his view on the situation. Eyes doubted that his description was inaccurate.
"So there is leadership now?" Eyes questioned, glancing at Kanone once more. Kanone nodded. While the Hunters had predominantly worked in small groups without a unified force and a chosen leader, the situation that Kisame and Kanone had met with earlier that day suggested a change in the Hunter dynamic. Eyes sighed and stopped playing. He stood and walked to the other side of the bench, seating himself so that he was facing Kanone head on. "What's our next move?" He questioned, suspecting that Kanone had a plan to combat the situation.
"That's what we need to figure out." Kanone said slowly. Eyes nodded. In the dim light of the single lamp, the two spent the rest of the night discussing possible ways to protect the Blade Children from the rapidly escalating threat.
