Chapter 18: Another Surprise
Once they dropped Beverly off with Natalia, Calleigh and Horatio showed up at the hospital before heading to the room where Kyle was in.
They stopped at the closed door, looked through the window and saw Cynthia laying on the bed with her head on Kyle's good shoulder while their foster mom was sitting at his bedside, her hand on Kyle's, and all of them were smiling, probably their first real smile since Aaron had died.
When Calleigh heard Horatio sigh, she turned her head to look at him before speaking in a comforting tone while running her hand up and down his back. "You're not doing this to hurt anyone, but I know you can't just walk away from this without truly knowing."
He nodded, then after giving that family another moment of normalcy, or at least as close to it as it can be under these circumstances, Horatio lifted his hand up to knock, knowing that whatever comes next has the potential to change everything.
A moment after the knock was heard, the door opened by Laura, and she smiled when she saw who it was. "Horatio, please come in."
She moved to the side to let them in, then turned to look at Kyle. "Kyle, this is this man who helped you first."
When Kyle smiled with his bright blue eyes, Calleigh had to do a mental gasp because she knew that smile and those eyes like the back of her hand, that was her husband's smile and eyes, no doubt about it.
Kyle spoke a second later, breaking her from her thoughts. "Mr. Caine, thank you for help saving my life."
Horatio tried to downplay what he did, even though his heart was racing at seeing the image of this teenage boy, his boy? Fighting for his life. "I just did what any decent human being would do."
"Well, it happened to be you in that moment, so still I feel I got to thank you."
This time he nodded with a small smile. "Then you're welcome, and please it's Horatio."
After Kyle nodded Horatio took his wife's hand before introducing her to them. "Laura, Cynthia and Kyle, I would like you to meet my wife, Calleigh Caine."
Once they all said their hellos, Laura asked, bringing their attention back to the reason her foster son was in the hospital. "So, did you get him?"
Horatio looked at Laura with a nod. "We did, but Kyle may still need to testify."
Before Laura had a chance to speak, Kyle did it. "I'll do whatever I can to help out."
"That's good, thank you."
After Kyle nodded, Horatio turned his attention back to Laura and asked after cleaning his. "Laura, can I speak to you out on the hall for a few moments?"
Laura looks worried as she asked. "Is there something more with the case?"
Horatio shook his head. "No, what I want to talk about with you doesn't have anything to do in a professional standpoint, it's a little personal."
Laura shook her head in confusion. "Ok, I don't see why you need to talk to me about something personal." Her eyes get a little wide as she tried to continue. "Unless you are…."
Kyle cuts her off, fearing the same thing she is. "No! If you're trying to take me out of her house, I won't go. None of this is her fault."
Cynthia held on to Kyle's arm tighter as she spoke with a sad tone. "I don't want him to go either. Please don't take him away."
Before things got any more out of control, Calleigh spoke up. "Please, everybody just calm down. Horatio is not here to take anybody away from anywhere. Right now he just…" She paused for a second and looked at her husband for his permission, which he gave it with nod before she continued while looking at the other three people in the room. "He just wants the truth."
Kyle and Laura both look at him in confusion before Laura spoke again. "Truth about what?"
Horatio looks at Laura again. "That's what I need to talk to you about."
"Ok, then start talking. I'm sorry Horatio, but I'm not going out in the hall, I don't keep anything from 'my' kids, we have an open and honest relationship and I like to keep that intact."
Horatio respected that, so he nodded and took a breath before he started to speak. "In 1990, while I was a cop in New York, I got requested to do an undercover job in Pensacola, Florida, and because it was undercover, I had to take on a new name, a new identity." Horatio paused for a moment, pulled something out of his pocket and started speaking again while handing Laura his undercover ID card. "And that new identity and name was…"
He trailed off as Laura gasped when she saw the name on the card, then she looked up at Horatio in shocked. "You are John Walden."
As Horatio nodded, Laura turned to look at Kyle, who was also looking at Horatio in a shocked state, then he asked a question, and not the one Horatio was expecting as his first question. "You knew my mother?"
Horatio nodded again before replying. "I did."
After a moment, Kyle then started to get upset. "So, then what happened? You got involved with her until your 'job' was done then you just left her to get back to your real life?"
Laura looked at Kyle and spoke softly, trying to calm the teenage boy down. "Kyle…"
But Horatio cuts her off with an equally soft tone. "It's ok, Laura." He then looked at Kyle and shook his head. "Actually, if you want to get technical, she left me. After my work was done and the case was airtight, I was going to tell her that day on who I was, knowing that I couldn't have a real life with her if I didn't because I wasn't going to continue to live a lie. But when I got to her place, she was already gone and I couldn't find her."
Seeing the truth in Horatio's eyes, Kyle took a moment to process this new turn of events before asking a question. "Did you love her?"
Being completely honest, Horatio responded softly. "At the time I cared very deeply for her."
Respecting his honesty, and not saying something he didn't mean, Kyle asked another question. "If you had known she was pregnant, would you have been there for us?"
He nodded with a determined look on his face. "I would have found a way to be there, because nothing in this world means more to me than family. That's why I have to know if you're really my son."
Kyle took a breath before he asked softly. "You think my mom lied on who my father is?"
"No, I don't, and we can skip the DNA test all together if you want."
Kyle smirked humorlessly. "Can you really go through life without knowing if I'm really your son?"
Horatio then countered. "What about you? Can you live your life without knowing if I'm really your father?"
Kyle looked at Laura, almost pleading with his eyes, asking what he should do, and she spoke with a smile as she took his hand. "Sweetheart, it's up to you. But know that no matter what you decide, I'm here for you and you'll always have a place to call home."
Kyle then looked at Horatio again. "And if I am truly your son, are you going to take me out of my home?"
Horatio's response was instant. "No, I'm not here to take you away from any home, I just want to be part of your life and get to know you, but know that my home is always open to you."
After a few more moments, Kyle nodded. "Ok, let's take the test. I have to know the truth too."
Horatio nodded while pulling the business card the doctor had given him out of his pocket before dialing the number.
(About an hour later)
Once the doctor was done, he informed them it could be a few days before the results were in, and after the grownups thanked him, the doctor left the room.
Not long after the doctor had left, they were getting hungry, so Laura, Cynthia and Calleigh headed down to the cafeteria to give Kyle and Horatio some one-on-one time.
When it was finally only them in the room, Horatio asked if he could sit down next to him, which Kyle nodded, and after he had sat down, Kyle asked him a question after clearing his throat. "What can you tell me about my mom?"
Horatio paused, then with a smile, replied. "I don't know why this has stuck with me all this time, but I remember her loving chocolate chip pancakes."
Kyle chuckled with a nod. "That's what my grandmother would say. She tried them once then never went back to the plain ones."
Horatio nodded with another smile. "She was also beautiful, smart, protective and never took crap from anyone. I just don't understand why she would leave like she did, and unfortunately that's an answer I'll never get to hear."
Kyle looked at Horatio, after hearing the caring tone he used to describe his mother. "You really did care for her and were hurt when she left."
"Like I said earlier, I cared for her deeply and it did hurt." Horatio then sighed. "And while that was true, and if she had stayed and we had a real life together, the only thing I could promise you is that we would have tried to make it work. I don't know how we would have ended up though."
Kyle nodded in understanding. "I get that, life is unpredictable, and anyways things still probably would have changed had you still met Calleigh."
"Kyle…"
Whatever Horatio was about to say, Kyle cuts him off before he would with a small smile. "I may not know how you looked with my mom, but I see and I can feel the love you and Calleigh share, I felt it and saw it between Laura and Aaron the five years I've been with them and it's pretty deep and special."
Horatio didn't want to hurt Kyle, so he just nodded with a smile and replied with a simple answer. "Yes, it is."
Kyle then asked after clearing his throat. "Do you two have any kids together?"
Horatio nodded with another smile as he stood up. "We do." He then pulled a picture out of his wallet and handed it to him. "A one-year-old daughter. Her name is Beverly, after my mom."
Kyle looked at the picture of the family. "You have a beautiful family."
He was going to give the picture back, but Horatio shook his head. "Keep it, and that could be your family as well."
Kyle then looked at Horatio and asked softly. "Do you really think I'm your son?"
"Honestly, I do. At this point this test is just a formality to me. So, what do you think?"
There was no hesitation in Kyle's response. "I think so too. I don't believe my mom would have lied on my birth certificate, well you know what I mean, considering she only knew you by your undercover name."
"I do, and me neither." Horatio then took a breath and spoke with emotion. "I'm sorry I wasn't there for you. I know I didn't know about you, but I'm still sorry. And now that I do know you exist, you're not getting rid of me, from this day on, I'm here for you, no matter what, ok?"
Horatio then held out his hand, and after a brief hesitation, wanting to believe him, Kyle nodded while shaking his hand. "Ok."
As they released hands, the door opened and in came Calleigh, Laura and Cynthia.
After another two hours at the hospital, Calleigh and Horatio said goodbye and left, and when they made it into the vehicle, Horatio turned to look at his wife. "I'm sorry."
Calleigh turned to her husband with a smile. "For what? For letting your son know about who his mother was."
He sighed and shrugged his shoulders. "I just know it couldn't have been easy to hear."
She took his hand as she continued in an understanding tone. "True, hearing about you and other women in your past isn't exactly what I love to hear about, but like I just said, it's in your past and you happen to share a son with one, who's only heard about his mother from one other person in his life, and I'm not going to discourage that."
He gives her a smile as he responded. "You're amazing, you know that." She waved it off with a shy smile of her own and looked down before he moved his other hand to lift her chin and continued. "You truly are, and I love you so much."
She cupped his cheek and whispered. "I love you too."
After they share a gentle kiss and pulled back, he had to ask. "So, you really think Kyle is my son too?"
With no hesitation, she nodded with a smile. "Those eyes and that smile is a dead giveaway, so no doubt in my mind."
After one more kiss, he gets comfortable in the driver's seat and started the vehicle so they could go pick up their daughter and go home, but there was no doubt they'll be thinking about Kyle and impatiently waiting on those test results.
Three days later
Calleigh and Horatio was enjoying their lunch break in his office, well Horatio was, Calleigh had been nauseous all day, and she hadn't felt any better, so he spoke in a comforting tone. "Maybe you should go home."
She wasn't the type of person who likes missing work, unless it's to spend time with her family, but she thinks she'll take him up on his suggestion with a sigh. "You're right handsome. I'm sorry."
He shook his head with a smile as he gets up from his office chair, then walks around to the other side of his desk and helps her up before cupping her cheek. "There is nothing to be sorry about, you feeling better is more important right now. I'll call in Mark from swing shift to help with ballistics today. I'll even pick up Beverly after work so you can get some extra rest."
She smiles sweetly at him. "You sure?"
"I am."
Their moment was interrupted when his phone rang from his desk, so he steps back from his wife and answered his phone. "Caine."
The receptionist started speaking. "You have something here from a mail carrier that needs to be signed, Mr. Caine."
"Ok, I'll be there in a moment."
"Alright."
After he hung up, he looks at his wife, and she was looking at him with curiosity. "I guess I got something I need to sign for, so I'll walk you out."
She nodded with a smile, and after grabbing her purse and sweater, her and Horatio left his office, then after signing what he needed from the mail carrier, he walked Calleigh to her vehicle.
Once they stopped at the driver's door, Horatio opened the envelope like package, then pulled out another envelope that had the hospital's address, so he did an intake of breath and Calleigh asked after getting her door open. "What is it?"
He showed her the front of it and said softly. "It's from the hospital. The test results I believe."
She nodded in understanding before replying to him. "Then you should go see Kyle now, I know both of you can't wait much longer to know the truth."
And honestly, she really couldn't either, but she was willing to wait until Horatio talk to Kyle about it first.
He nodded in agreement before asking. "You don't want to come? This concerns you too, you know."
She gives him a sweet smile as she cupped his cheek. "You know I would, but I'm honestly not feeling well, and I don't want to get anybody else sick just in case."
Respecting her decision, he nodded. "Ok, then I'll see you later, and I'll still pick up Beverly."
"Ok, love you."
"Love you too. Hope you get well."
She nodded with a smile. "Me too, and good luck."
After one more nod, Calleigh removed her hand from his cheek before getting into her vehicle.
While watching Calleigh leave, Horatio takes his phone out of his pocket and hits speed dial number 3 and places it up to his ear to hear Eric answer.
"Delko."
"Eric, when lunch break is over your boss for the day."
"No problem H, but is everything ok?"
"Yes, Calleigh isn't feeling well, and I need to take care of something personal."
Despite him, and honestly everybody else, wanting to know what's been going on with Horatio (And Calleigh for that matter) since they've been a little more distracted these days, Eric didn't ask questions about it.
"You got it boss. And when you see Calleigh, tell her I hope she feels better."
"I will and thank you."
"You're welcome, Bye, H."
"Bye, Eric."
After he hung up, Horatio headed to his vehicle so he could leave the lab.
After he arrived in front of Laura Reynold's white, nice, two-story house, he stopped his vehicle, turned it off, grabbed the envelope from the passenger seat before getting out and walking towards the front door then knocking.
A moment later Laura opened it, and once she realized who it was, she gave him a small smile. "Hi, Horatio. What can I do for you?"
He just held up the unopened envelope and asked. "Is Kyle here?"
She nodded as she moved to the side to let him in. "Yes, and please come in."
As he stepped into the house, he replied. "Thank you."
After she nodded, she called from the bottom of the stairs. "Kyle, please come down here." Then she asked the other kids, who were in the living room, if they would go outside and play before she picked up the youngest, 3-year-old, Danny, and looked at Horatio. "I'll give you two some privacy, make yourself at home."
He did nod but asked. "You sure you don't want to be in here when it's revealed?"
"It's ok, you two should have this moment. I'll be in the kitchen if you need me. Do you want anything while I'm in there?"
Horatio politely declined while Kyle was coming down the stairs, then just as he was about to ask what was going on, he saw Horatio standing there. "Hi Horatio."
"Hi Kyle."
Laura cupped Kyle's face with a smile before she removed her hand and headed towards the kitchen, leaving them alone.
They stood there a little awkwardly at first, not sure how to properly greet one another, then Kyle moved his hand to the couch and asked. "Would you like to sit?"
Horatio nodded with a smile before they headed to the couch and sat down, then he cleared his throat and showed him the envelope. "I just got this today, and I don't know about you, but I've been impatiently waiting for these results."
Kyle chuckled slightly with a nod. "Me too."
"Yeah?"
Kyle nodded again with a smile. "Yeah." He then asked. "But I see you haven't opened it yet, so you don't know."
"No, I wanted both of us to know at the same time, and Calleigh would have came with me, but she hasn't been feeling very well and she didn't want to take a chance of getting any one of you guys sick."
Kyle nodded in understanding before replying. "I hope she feels better."
"Me too." He then cleared his throat before asking. "So, you ready for this?"
Kyle did one more nod before Horatio started opening the envelope and pulling out the results, and with having spent his career looking at DNA samples it didn't take him long to figure it out what they all felt was the truth, so he hands Kyle the results, explained what it meant before they looked into each other's eyes and the teenager spoke softly. "So, it's really true, you are my father."
Horatio nodded with a smile, and really a few tears in his eyes. "Yes, I am, and you're really my son."
Kyle ran his hand down his face as he looked at the results again, then he chuckled as he looked at Horatio again. "I don't know what to do right now, do we hug or handshake..."
Kyle trailed off and Horatio replied. "Whatever you feel comfortable with."
Kyle than held out his hand. "How about handshake?"
Horatio chuckled as he took his son's hand so they could do a handshake.
After they release hands, they took another moment to process what just happened before Kyle asked softly. "Now that we know the truth, did you mean what you said about not taking me out of here?"
Horatio nodded as he spoke softly. "Yes, I did. I don't want to disrupt your life more than it already has been, but I want to be completely clear about this, my home is your home, and you are welcome to it anytime you want, and I do want to get to know you, if you'll let me, we have a lot of years to catch up on."
Kyle nodded with a smile. "Yes, we do, and I don't mind getting to know one another. I would also like to get to know Calleigh and Beverly." He then sighed. "But as for living with you guys, I'm going to need more time to think about it. I just don't feel right leaving them, I'm the oldest, I..."
Horatio cuts his son off with a gentle look. "I get it, and that's ok, whenever you're ready."
"Thank you."
They spent a little more time getting know one another before Horatio left the house, leaving Kyle with his address so he knew where he lived, then he went to the store to pick up some items for Calleigh just in case she was really sick, got Beverly from their regular sitter when she wasn't with them before heading home.
Once they were home and everything was settled inside Calleigh and Horatio spent time with Beverly, then as it was getting close to dinner time, Calleigh placed Beverly in her highchair before asking. "So, what were the results? Were they like we all thought they were?"
Horatio picked up the envelope and handed them to her, so she took the results out, looked at them before looking at her husband with a smile. "I guess today is your lucky day then."
He did feel it was a good day finding out the truth about Kyle's paternity, but the way Calleigh was looking at him, made him feel a little curious on why she said it like that, so he asked with a raised eyebrow. "Why do you say it like that?"
She smirked as she cupped his cheek. "Because I don't think it's every day that someone finds out they are going to be a father two times in one day, at least in the beginning stages."
Horatio looked at her in shock. "What!? You're pregnant?"
