Chapter 20: Christmas time with the Caines

December 24, 2007

The Caine family was sitting in the living room, which was set up with a Christmas tree and lights, when there was a knock on the door.

Horatio smiled as he stood up from the love seat. "That must be them."

For the first time in years, it was Derek and his family who were meeting with the Caines for the holidays instead of the other way around, and this time it was for a little more special reason, it would also be the first time that Derek and his family would meet Kyle.

Now they heard what happened and how they found out Horatio had a son, but they never met him yet.

After Horatio opened the door, Derek and Horatio handshake with smiles before he moved to the side to let the family of seven come in.

While Horatio was closing the door, the family was greeting Calleigh and Beverly, then as Horatio was turning around, Kyle had stood up from the couch and took a few steps, so he was face to face with Derek.

Derek took a moment then smiled as he held out his hand. "Hi Kyle, I'm Derek Miller. It is very nice to meet you."

Kyle nodded with a smile as he shook the older man's hand. "It's nice to meet you too. My dad has told me some stories."

Derek smirked as they release hands. "Well, maybe you should tell me which stories he told you so I can tell you the right version."

They all started chuckling, then Derek cleared his throat and introduced his family to Kyle, starting with his wife. "I would like you to meet my wife, Felicia."

Felicia and Kyle smile at one another while she replied. "It is very nice to meet you, I see a lot of your father in you."

Kyle nodded with a smile. "I've already heard that a lot."

After another around of chuckling, Derek continued. "And these are our kids." Derek turned to look at his five kids, the now 16-year-old D.J., 14-year-old twins, Aisha and Tia, 8-year-old Damarcus, and 5-year-old Sasha, before looking at Kyle and introducing them one by one to him.

Once the introductions were done the teenagers and kids, including Beverly, went into another room, while the women sat down on the couch and started talking, then Horatio asked with a smile. "Would you all like something to drink?"

When Felicia and Calleigh got done telling him what they wanted, Horatio and Derek headed towards the kitchen, then as he was getting the drinks, Derek nodded with a smile. "I knew something had happened when you went undercover."

Horatio looked at his best friend with a small smile. "You've been wanting to say that for years, huh?"

Derek nodded with a small shrug, dialing down the excitement, remembering how his best friend was after he came back from that undercover assignment, and hoping the bad part of his undercover side wasn't taking over his real life. "Yeah, I just remember how you were for a few months after you returned, I knew something was off, but honestly I didn't expect that."

Horatio sighed with a nod of his own. "Me neither. I mean I know I did something I shouldn't have, gotten involved with someone while being undercover, but..."

Derek cuts him off while placing a hand on his shoulder. "But you are human, man, and when there is a strong attraction and feelings involved, it's hard to resist."

"And while there was this strong attraction between us, it doesn't even compare to how I feel towards Calleigh."

Derek shook his head with a chuckle as he removed his hand from his best friend's shoulder. "You don't have to convince me on that one bud, I saw the happiness in your eyes when you first introduced us." Horatio nodded with another bright smile while Derek continued with another smile of his own. "I'm still trying to wrap my brain around the fact that you now have a teenage son."

Horatio chuckled. "Me too, but now that he is in my life I honestly can't imagine him not being here, I believe I fell in love with him the day I found out it was even possible he could have been mine."

"That's awesome man, I'm just sorry you had to find out the way that you did." After one more nod by Horatio, Derek asked one more question. "How is Calleigh taking it?"

Horatio shook his head with one of the biggest smiles Derek probably ever seen on his face while he replied. "Like she found her long lost child as well, I already see how much she loves him. If I had anything to worry about when it came to the two of them bonding, it was gone the day he moved in."

Derek smiled as well as he placed a hand on his best friend's shoulder again. "I am so happy for you, you're getting the life I always wanted for you."

Horatio then cleared his throat and said softly. "And we aren't done yet."

Derek looks at Horatio with wide eyes after a moment of letting what he said sink in. "She's pregnant?"

Horatio gave Derek another bright smile with a nod. "Yes, I found out the same day I found out that I was Kyle's father, and before you ask, you are the first person I told, outside of Kyle, which he took pretty well."

Derek brings Horatio into his arms for hug while chuckling. "Well congratulations, man, that is amazing to hear."

"Thanks, Derek, your support has always meant the world to me."

"Always."

As they were getting ready to pull back, the women had walked into the kitchen with smiles before Calleigh smirked. "We were wondering what was taken so long for the drinks, and now we know why, you were having a 'bro' moment."

Derek smirked in return. "For a very good reason, Horatio just told me the news, congratulations."

Calleigh smiled as Derek was moving in for a hug, while Felicia spoke in surprise. "You two are pregnant?" After Horatio nodded with a smile, Felicia clapped with a chuckle while walking towards Horatio to give him a hug. "Congratulations, Horatio."

"Thanks, Felicia."

Once they pulled back, and after Derek and Calleigh pulled back, Felicia gave Calleigh a hug. "Congratulations, girl."

"Thanks."

When they pulled back, Calleigh spoke. "You two are the first people to know, outside of Kyle. We weren't going to tell the others until tomorrow."

They nodded with smiles in understanding, then after they get their drinks the four of them headed back into the living room.

Next Night

Kyle was talking to DJ and Aisha, which the three if of them were already forming a pretty good bond, especially between DJ and Kyle, when there was a knock on the door, and once Kyle saw who walked in (His foster family), he excuses himself from the 'group' and headed towards the door to greet them.

While he was hugging Cynthia with a huge grin on his face, Aisha, who didn't know who those people were, was watching with a slight glare on her face, causing her brother to chuckle. "Well, it looks like somebody is jealous."

Aisha looked at her brother with a shocked look. "What!? I am not. I just met him yesterday so how can I..."

DJ shrugged his shoulders with a slight smile. "I heard that feelings can happen fast. I haven't felt it myself yet, but you know our parents' story."

While DJ was a good looking, athletic type of young man, he hasn't had that many girlfriends in the two years he was allowed to start dating, right now it was mostly about school and sports.

Aisha shook her head while looking at Kyle again, who was greeting the rest of kids. "Well, I'm not, besides in his eyes I'm probably too young for him."

DJ smirked again when he saw his sister flinch after seeing Kyle and Cynthia share another hug. "Yeah, but it still doesn't stop you from being jealous."

Aisha just shook her head and rolled her eyes, looking away, then a few minutes later, Kyle walks up to them with a smile on his face as he spoke. "Hey guys, I would like you to meet my foster family."

The minute Aisha heard that, she turned to look at Kyle with a smile as she asked. "Foster family?"

Kyle nodded with another smile before introducing them, starting with Cynthia. "This is my sister, Cynthia."

Aisha held out her hand to the young girl with another smile. "Nice to meet you, Cynthia."

Cynthia said the same thing before being greeted by DJ, who couldn't help but give his sister another smug look.

A few hours later, once the rest of the gang showed up, and they were told the wonderful news about the new addition to the family, Eric lifted his glass of champagne up with a smile. "To Calleigh and Horatio and their new welcomed additions." They all looked at Kyle as Eric continued with a smile. "Kyle, I also just want to say that I don't think I ever seen your father or Calleigh as happy as they have been the last five months, you have filled them with so much joy and I am glad that you have come into our lives."

They all clapped, then Kyle took a breath before he spoke a little shyly while looking at his foster family first. "First of all, I love you guys, you all helped shaped me the last five years on me becoming who I am today, and I am so thankful that you took me in and loved me like I was your own from the start, that will never be forgotten, or cherished to the fullest, you have to know that."

Laura nodded with tears in her eyes. "We know Kyle, and Aaron knew that too."

Kyle nodded before looking at his father and stepmom. "These last five months have also been enjoyable to me, thank you for welcoming me into your home, it's been a joy getting to know you as my..." Kyle paused for a second before finishing with tears in his eyes, knowing this was the first time he'll be using this word to address Horatio and Calleigh."...Father and mother."

Horatio and Calleigh looked a little stunned at being addressed as that since that was the first time he had called them that, but then their eyes started to fill up with tears while walking towards him and gave him a hug.

Horatio then whispered with emotion. "I love you, son."

"Love you too, dad."

After they pulled back from the three-person hug, Calleigh cupped Kyle's cheek with even more tears in her eyes as she spoke. "I am so happy that you view me as your mother. I know that you had two mothers before me, and I'm not trying to replace either one in your eyes or heart, but as far as I'm concerned, I am your mother, and I will fight anyone who tries to disagree on that."

They all chuckled with nods before Kyle nodded with a smile and a few more tears in his eyes. "I'm glad you have my back."

"Always, I love you, Kyle."

They get back into a hug while he whispered. "I love you too, mom."

After they pulled back and wiped their tears away before they all raised their glasses and said. "Merry Christmas."

About an hour later, after everyone had dinner, the group had broken down to smaller groups, just chatting away while Horatio and Calleigh were standing in the doorway of their kitchen and dining room, viewing their 'family.'

He had wrapped his arm around her shoulders and kissed her temple before whispering. "Merry Christmas, sweetheart."

She snuggled up to his side with a smile. "Merry Christmas, Handsome." She then sighed. "It feels like I am in a dream right now."

He sighed before kissing her head, then replied. "For me too, I can't believe this is my life, that I have you, our son, our daughter, and another little one on the way, our friends/family." He does a sigh as he finished softly. "But I will admit there is a few people missing in this scene."

Calleigh moved her head from his shoulder and turned to him to cup his cheek. "I know handsome, but we both know that they have to still stay away."

Horatio nodded with one more sigh. "I just wish my brother was here to get to know you and our kids."

After Raymond and his family had left the country two years ago, which was mostly so he would be out of trouble, him and Yelina worked on repairing their marriage and now was stronger than ever. They even added a daughter to their family last year, she was unexpected for sure, but by the postcards Calleigh and Horatio get from time to time, they seemed happy. Horatio just wishes his brother could be here.

Calleigh just nods with a smile as she runs her hand up and down his cheek before they share a kiss and go back to looking at the beautiful scene in front of them.
